This is an OG classic in Little Tokyo. We are here often, in large loud groups....maybe this is why they are less friendly when we are there lol. For real though, the food here is solid, and the drinks....let's say, the last time I had a drink here, I was down for the count for like, 2 days. I am shocked at this 3 1/2 star rating! Also, I looked through the reviews and the bad ones are complete bs. We ordered most of the menu and nothing disappointed. The sushi is from heaven. Seriously I felt like a sushi chef was right there in front of us but I have a feeling it was made by a Mexican chef with love in the kitchen. Me and babe ordered 4 things off the menu and ate every morsel including the garnishes. If licking my plate could be acceptable I would have done so. We ordered the chicken gyoza, Far bar and Dragon roll, and the wings. Everything was great but the wings were a little too spicy for me so I happily gave them to my man and he was thoroughly satisfied. They adhere to Vegans, they serve food late. I can't get enough of this place. Taylor from Louisiana had the best southern hospitality. Angel and I talked about how great the Beatles were and it just made for an epic night. My friend and I came here on a Sunday afternoon (around 2-3 pm) after visiting the Japanese American National Museum. We wanted a late lunch with some beverages and this spot met that need. It was happy hour, so I ordered the Maneki tots off of the happy hour menu, and my friend ordered the all beef chili bean tots with rice off of the specials menu. They were delicious. I just wish there was slightly more shredded pork on my tots. I really enjoyed my drink, Jade Empire (gin, coconut sake, lime, mint syrup - all things I like). Our server was super accommodating and the right amount of attentive, checking in on us to refill our water and whatnot. The vibe was pretty mellow and it wasn't too busy. I definitely want to come back and try more of the menu (especially the drinks). Side note: my friend was lucky and found street parking. There's also a few structures/lots around the area. This is a cool hidden away place right in plain sight in little Tokyo. Stopped in here with friends before going to see the play Pacific Overtures. The place has an industrial feel and appeared to be an old store that had been converted into a restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised to see a huge selection of whiskey with a nice selection of Japanese spirits. The specialty drinks were really good. My wife loved the Jade Empire. Been here a few times now and never disappointed. This is the kind of spot you venture into when you want to be sure of a good time. The whiskey collection is amazing to include some of the best Japanese whiskeys. Very appropriate for Little Tokyo area. Add to that great food and awesome beers to pair everything with. There's picnic style tables at the center of the restaurant where we've sat and had some fun, but I always prefer to sit at the bar. One time we were there for a dodger game and just as we were about to leave Ohtani hit a home run and we were given shots to take before we departed. Our group of six stopped by at Far Bar after a Dodgers day game. We sat right in the middle of the bar and were promptly served water and offered drinks and food. We remained at FB for several hours and sampled their tots, chicken wings, fries, pot stickers, and sliders. All the food was quite tasty, but their wings were stand out. I had a Moscow mule, which was refreshing, tart, and gingery witout being overly sweet. My friend raved over the Gold Rush cocktail and others agreed their drinks were well-made. If you're from LA you know you don't get in the car to drive just anywhere... I would hop in a car to get some Ming's Wings at Far Bar any day, any time. I leave always wanting to come back and introduce someone to this gem. Along with their tasty food, their craft cocktails are just as great. I love ordering a classic whiskey sour here, but their cocktail list is a unique selection worth trying. I recently went for my birthday and having one round of drinks led to three from wanting to try more. One honest advice about the establishment is that the service seems scattered; most of the times I've been there it's been so busy that there is never someone to host us. We eventually sit somewhere, get noticed and asked if we've been helped. After ordering it seems that multiple people come check on you and what your order is. WOW pretty great fish for a bar environment. I see why people come here now. It was my first time with the gf and they have amazing hand rolls/fish quality here! We got salmon and tuna hand rolls and a eel roll. Drinks were fast and tasty as well! We sat at the bar and they took great and quick care of us! Happy hour food on 02-18-2024 was good but our table of five had to wait forever!!! And they brought food out one at a time. First they brought my friend her two little cheeseburger sliders which she finished eating before my Teriyaki Mango sliders were brought out. I was finished before the next friend received her pork tacos. Our fourth friend had to sit and watch each one of us eat before her Dragon roll was finally brought out and that was after she asked about it! Needed a relaxing and casual place before a show. Never been here for an actual meal but I know it's a very iconic establishment in the local community. Tons of history within these walls and you can feel it. You can't miss the iconic neon sign out front, especially during the evening. It's a nice place to hang out, chit-chat and enjoy some drinks and Asian-inspired fare. Had to try their pozole ramen and it was pretty good...a great combination of flavors and cultures! Indeed, a hidden gem. I have been coming to Far Bar for over 10 years, from happy hour to dinner to group events. This latest visit was for a group event. Far Bar hosted us (approximately 25 people) in the outdoor alleyway, which included new decorations and colorful lights to give a semi-divvy yet modern feel. We enjoyed this spot better than the indoor dining area. The food was good (as it has been over the years) and the host was responsive to our needs. Pricing, like all places, has gone up over the years but not to the extent of unreasonableness. Not much to say other than to check this place out if you haven't already. read more

Was in the area and looking for a place to watch the Dodger game. This didn't disappoint. If you are unable to be seated inside they have an outside patio area in the alleyway which is cozy. They have multiple tv screens throughout showing the game which is nice. Everyone is there for the same thing, to watch the Dodgers! It is a great environment to be apart of. As for service, it was okay the servers were nice but I did find at times that it was lacking. However, the food was great. We mainly tried more of the appetizer options to keep us busy throughout the duration of the game. A bit of history...an iconic chop suey in the heart of Japan town in downtown Los Angeles. The original owners were Chinese, so when E.O. 9066 forced the relocation of ethnic Japanese, Far East Chop Suey (Café) remained opened. At the end of the war, former residents returned, but opportunities were not scarce. However, the owners of the Far East Café allowed the returning internees to eat and pay whenever they can in the future. Needless to say, it was a popular location. Fast forward to the present, and the 1994 Northridge earthquake caused the restaurant to close. The original facade remains and it re-opened as the Far Bar, an awesome whiskey, sake + beer bar. The bar is stocked with a tremendous amount of whiskey - especially a humongous selection of Japanese whiskey. Surprisingly, a Suntory highball dispenser (Toki + soda water pre-mixed). The kitchen serves great food - a fusion of Japanese, Korean, Mexican influenced cuisine to complement the great selection of beer and whiskey. Located down the main street of Japantown (1st Street) just look for the Far East Chop Suey sign. It's a great, historic place for a drink or two and the fusion food. We ordered the sliders and even though not very busy they took 25 minutes to come out. The bartender was very nice, apologized and comped them. I hate that I'm writing this, but I am having trouble falling asleep. I've been coming to this bar for 15 years, but tonight I was on the receiving end of some blatant RACISM, and I cannot let it slide. Tonight I was refused service because I'm ASIAN. In LITTLE TOKYO. I wore a white t shirt and a beanie to the bar. Apparently there was some other asian patron who was also wearing a white shirt and a beanie, and Far Bar served him too much. That was enough to also refuse service to me. I'm still not entirely sure why, but apparently it's because I also am a generic ASIAN who happened to wear a white shirt and a beanie. If I weren't ASIAN (i.e., if I were any other RACE with a white shirt and a beanie), it would've been no sweat, but because I'm asian they refused to serve me. To be clear, at no point in time was I over-served or incoherent. You may be able to tell from this post, but I am and have been clear eyed all night. I was profiled for being ASIAN, and Far Bar refused service. It was HUMILIATING TO NOT BE SERVED because I was mistaken for another ASIAN. I pointed this out to the staff--that I thought that they were mistaken, and when one of the staff members asked how they could make it right, I really just asked that the bartender who refused me service apologize. He refused. No one else at Far Bar did anything about it. They thought giving me a free drink would be enough to compensate for the RACISM. Humiliating. Again, Far Bar is such an establishment to me and it pains me to write this, but this is not ok. The fact that Far Bar is ok hiring bartenders who cannot tell ASIAN people apart in LITTLE TOKYO is not ok. Little Tokyo is such a cultural gem, one that I cherish deeply. I've been in the neighborhood for 15 years. How I was treated tonight is the complete antithesis of what Little Tokyo is all about. I don't believe that it's what Far Bar, at its core, is about either, but things must change and the people must know. Little Tokyo is supposed to be (and has been) a refuge for people who maybe have had a hard time fitting in anywhere else. A place where people are free to be themselves. You would think Far Bar, whose owner owns both FAR BAR and SAKE DOJO, would be familiar with this, but perhaps not familiar enough. To be discriminated against for being ASIAN in LITTLE TOKYO at FAR BAR of all places is insane. But it happened. I hate that it happened. I know Little Tokyo at the moment is clinging onto its roots. I'm not sure how an establishment that DISCRIMINATES against ASIAN people is supposed to be a part of any sort of future for Little Tokyo that honors its past. It may, sadly, be the case that Far Bar has deteriorated to the point that it's now just a cheap imitation of an important Little Tokyo relic. I don't know what else to make of an establishment that so passively permits RACISM against asian customers. Again, I hate that it's come to this. I hate that we're here. I want Little Tokyo to remain a haven. I think Far Bar could (emphasis on could) be a part of that. But things clearly need to change. I'm not sure where Far Bar lost its way, but things need to change. If you're reading this post, it means Far Bar has refused to put in systems that would prevent discrimination against ASIANS (or any other race) and to stop RACISM. There are plenty of other bars nearby (but maybe skip SAKE DOJO) that are not stubbornly RACIST, so maybe check those places out. That said, there is nothing more that I'd love than to see the businesses that have been in LITTLE TOKYO (including Far Bar) flourish, and I hope that I can delete this post soon. read more

The better: I appreciated their outdoor patio area and the Mapo tofu tacos were worth a try (it's not really Mapo spicy but the taste was good and not too oily or salty). Came to Far Bar for a happy hour event. The loft space is incredibly small and the ceiling is also quite low. It's not great for large parties like what we had, but I can see it being a cute place for a smaller gathering. Also, the A/C situation was questionable since it was so hot. They have a few restrooms. Food is alright. I tried their fries, tater tots, and deep-fried gyoza. All were greasy and tasted fine. They have someone out front who checks your ID. The waiters and bartenders are all friendly. They're definitely understaffed - especially when it's busy. Pretty prime location, right outside of Little Tokyo plaza. Prices are standard. Parking is street parking or park in a paid lot. They are just 3 minute walk away from the Little Tokyo metro stop. read more

After an event nearby, our friends and I decided to grab dinner here at Far Bar. I can't believe I've passed by so many times over the years and have never been inside here. I absolutely love the long outdoor patio alley! Yay for doggo friendly! We visited on a Tuesday night so it was not crowded at all. It looks they make use of the movie screen and projector as well. The guys love their burgers and fries, my gf got eel rolls with gyozas and she enjoyed it. And for me I can never say no whenever I see sliders on the menu. Didn't tip for 2 beers . The guy that was the bartending came up to me forced me to tip and told me that it was mandatory to tip and to be a better person. I told him I wanted to speak to the manager & he said he was, he then threatened me if I didn't tip he was going to kick me out and take my drinks away. I've been here plenty of times and this is the first time I have had a manager come up to me forcing me to tip and tell me it's mandatory. As far as I've always known tipping has been optional.
