I was disappointed that they were out of the shrimp bowl, but I tried the salmon bowl with black fried rice. The rice was the perfect level of crispy and mixed in with vegetables and coated in a flavorful sauce. There was a generous portion of salmon, which was well-cooked and also coated in a tasty sauce that complemented the rice well. We also split the quinoa bao buns, which were quite large. The actual quinoa patties were surprisingly tasty and complemented by a green sauce that seemed to taste similar to a light guac. I've been in Harlem now going on 16 years, and I'm always excited to check out new restaurants. Unfortunately some of the overhyped new spots tend to over salt and overcharge for their food, and unfortunately I think a lot of people have been missing the subtlety of truly well seasoned food. I walked into Fieldtrip just to check it out, and aside from it being spotless and the staff being very friendly, the food smelled so good that had to try it. I got the shrimp bowl with green curry and sticky rice, the crab pockets which came with a sweet and slightly tart dipping sauce, and the vegetable Bao buns. Well I can see the comparisons to Dig In this place definitely has its own flair. The green curry was perfect in the sense that it had a nice heat to it without being overly spicy, was well seasoned overall. The fresh vegetables with it were cooked perfectly with just enough crisp to let you know that they were fresh. I'm not always a huge fan of sticky rice, but I did not think it was too heavy at all for the dish, it actually added a nice texture. The crab pockets are essentially a version of crab Rangoon, they were fresh, crispy, and the filling was nicely seasoned - although there's not a lot of filling, so if you eat the whole piece in one bite you may not get all the flavor of it. Again it's a texture thing for me, so I love the light crispy wonton with the fluffy creamy filling. It worked for me. The Bao buns have a delicious vegetable & quinoa filling, again very well seasoned - honestly I expected it to be bland but it was not at all. My only dislike about this is that the buns themselves were a bit more cooked than I personally like, I tend to like mine to be really doughy, but still they were fresh and light and tasty. Bao buns themselves in general don't have a lot of flavor, so going back to my thing with texture, I just like them to be more pillowy. The kicker is that I actually love salt and pepper, and spicy food, so something definitely has to be cooked with some care for me to enjoy the flavor without the condiments. This food is definitely not bland, it has actual flavor if you slow down and enjoy it. I'm glad I waited a little while before I came through, because anything that I've seen complained about thus far seems to be pretty much corrected. The presentation of food was neat, the staff was wonderful, the restaurant was spotless including the bathroom. So I highly recommend that people stop through and give them a shot. Recently opened, Rice Culture Field Trip was slammed at lunchtime (1ish) on this chilly afternoon, 1-ish. My husband and I took the "field trip," and were very glad we did! I chose the salmon bowl, he the veggie. Both were deeply flavorful. I loved the black rice of the salmon bowl, chewy but distinct grains of nutty, smooth, rice. The bright orange sauce on the fish was good with a teeny-tiny kick to it. The rest of the bowl had greens, a couple of chunks of sweet potato and/or squash, and it all held together deliciously. His veggie bowl had broccoli, greens, and assorted chopped veggies with a lovely yogurt sauce, rice of co, and some kind of bread at the bottom that he devoured (so it must have been very good,). We ordered the quinoa bar buns and the crab puffs to share as sides; menu calls them "extras," but I could have made the quinoa bar buns a meal by themselves, crunchy outside, soft inside, yummy! I had unsweetened iced tea, he enjoyed the dragon fruit lemonade. You order at the counter where you enter; in that space are some larger group size (8 or 10) tables. There's a small side counter for the napkins and the sporks (I love sporks!), & complimentary cups and water. Behind that are several smaller tables for 1 or 2. Only 2 minor drawbacks, imho. One, it was pretty darn cold out, would've loved the option for a hot drink. the other, the kinks are still being worked out; each bowl is deliciously made to order, but that means quite a wait. Haven't gone on a field trip in awhile? This new quick-stop eatery in Harlem will appeal to both your Asian and soul food palettes. We ordered different items and as all humans with common decency should, we shared everything: Quinoa bao buns: I've eaten many a bao and although not the traditional pork belly or roasted duck that I'm accustomed to, the patty was umami all the same. The avocado/cilantro sauce was refreshing and the yucca puffs which cradled the buns offered a nice textural crunch. Crab pockets: These bite-sized morsels contained a rich cream cheese with hints of garlic, packaged in a fried wonton shell, which were a bit oily. Although tasty, I don't think I would eat more than 1 or 2 (I think they came with 5). Beef Bowl: The reminiscent Asian-style braise threw my taste buds into a plot twist with a TexMex fusion. The Texan brown rice and spicy black beans were a unique side to a traditional Asian main. The collards, butternut squash, and brussel sprouts balanced the dish with some health. Veggie Bowl: They were out of the Nana's bread as a side, so they were replaced with spicy black beans. I would not order the veggie bowl again; it was mostly rice. Although the cucumber coconut yogurt was unique, I wish they could have added the quinoa patty used in the bao buns to make this bowl less rice-heavy. Dragon Fruit Lemonade: I couldn't taste the dragon fruit. It made me feel pretty in pink, but I would not order it again. So the winners of this meal are the quinoa bao buns and beef bowl! Fieldtrip is conveniently located near the A,B, C, D and the red line express trains in Harlem. I ordered the Shrimp Bowl; Quinoa Bao Buns and the Dragonfruit Lemonade. My friend Brit opted for the same beverage and side, but had the Veggie Bowl. The food exceeded my expectations. The portions were more than enough. The flavors and concept won me over. I discovered FieldTrip about 2 years ago at the height of the pandemic since they were donating meals to the Urban outreach where I volunteer. Even though I'm Dominican I'm actually not a huge fan of rice so I was intrigued to try out all of the different rice dishes especially since everyone raved about how delicious the food was. I've tried out most of their dishes. The salmon bowl with the black rice is my favorite dish here. The fried chicken with BBQ sauce and Carolina fried rice is a close second. The brisket and shrimp are also delicious. I didn't know I could be such a rice fan but they really make good rice and the protein choices are delicious. I've gotten the veggie bowl for my mom who's Vegan and very picky and she was a fan of the vegetables. The only disappointment for me was the sweet plantains, they were not cooked thoroughly in the center and were just not good in my opinion. Maybe if you're not a plantain loving Dominican you will not find any issues with the plantains. I recommend this place to anyone who's into delicious rice centered dishes. read more

I would've expected the sauce to give the salmon a little kick but that wasn't the case. I noticed in this dish there was pineapple black rice. I wasn't a fan because I felt like something was missing from the rice. Needed some more flavor to it. For me the best thing in the bowl was the greens. The food is great, the service is hit or miss. I often go there for lunch using mealpal. One of the managers is awesome and actually knows what she's doing and how the program works. Unfortunately I don't know her name. Went there today and unfortunately she wasn't there and Patricia was. I had a meeting that ran late so I could no longer scan the QR code, I showed her my phone so she could see I have mealpal and it hadn't been picked up so she could see I wasn't trying to pull a fast one, I was just late. She refused to help, averted eye contact, and basically acted like I didn't exist. She claimed she needed a code to put in the register but there is no code when you scan, it just tells you the meal I'm picking up. Since they offer only one mealpal option a day it's obvious which meal I was getting. It wouldn't be a big deal if I could get my money/credit back but I can't. I was very sad that I never got to go to Henry at Life Hotel, so I was quite excited when I realized that the same chef had opened Fieldtrip. Now that quarantine has lifted a bit I finally ventured out to Harlem to try it, and it was definitely worth the 30min subway ride! I got the BBQ Brisket bowl and it was amazing- all the flavors and textures from the meat, sauce, collard greens, sweet potatoes, beans and rice melded together perfectly! I had the Quinoa Bao Buns too, which were good but not deserving of the rave reviews that some other Yelpers gave. The BBQ brisket more than makes up for it though! I have only tried their quinoa bao buns, crab pockets, and their yucca chips and I am thoroughly impressed. Especially with the quinoa bao buns. Typically I prefer meat because that's what I'm used to eating with bao buns. But this is a very nice vegan twist. Their yucca chips are also extremely addicting. Their crab pockets are actually made of real crab, not imitation (or at least it tastes and looks like real crab). I definitely want to come back again. Fieldtrip is a welcome addition to my neighborhood, otherwise over-run with Soul Food tropes, fast food joints/chains, and monstrously ambitious high-end spots enjoying the cheaper rent. It is truly refreshing to see a place priced for Harlem residents open up with a genuinely novel idea rather than as a "Harlem-ized" tribute to something that worked somewhere else. "Rice is culture" is the mantra here, and the simple and direct entree menu is populated with what we inelegantly call "rice bowls" in American English. Rice is almost completely ubiquitous in human cuisine, absent as an indigenous food only in regions where it can't be cultivated. The people behind Fieldtrip noticed this and they built their culinary world tour based upon that insight. I ordered the veggie bowl because I mostly focus on eating plants these days. I was asked "vegetarian or vegan?" when I placed my order at the counter. I am actually neither. The query was presumably about a yogurt-based sauce included with this dish and I opted for it. One nice service touch was that the cashier took my name off the plastic I paid with, instead of asking me my name right after I handed her something with my name on it (a pet peeve of mine). I value that kind of thoughtful counter service. The open kitchen is in the front with a row of tables down the opposite side of this typical shoe-box restaurant space. The decor is modern and unpretentious, while I was there heady rap set the scene musically. The staff are friendly and helpful, food is served in recyclable bowls with heavy plastic cutlery. Put simply, its a nice space that knows where it is. This is south central Harlem, Central Park is a short walk downtown, the 116th 2-3 Subway stop is steps away. No $35 entrees here, the beer selection is judicious and well-curated. The veggie bowl starts, at the bottom, with flatbread, another culinary ubiquity, topped by rice of quality sufficient to please any expert, then topped with roasted vegetables and a yogurt-based sauce. On first glance, it seems kind of casual and thrown-together, like what I do when perusing a large buffet with a bowl in hand, but once I began to eat it I understood that it is far more thoughtful than that. The flavors blend well, I immediately began to wonder how they got all of the bitterness out of their brussel sprouts. It takes talent to make something appear casual that was actually thoughtfully planned, but Fieldtrip pulls it off. This realization caused me to appreciate the thoughtfulness than goes into every part of this place, from the menu to the decor to the vibe. This is a restaurant that knows (and likes) where it is and what can be done with the mindful execution of a simple and coherent idea. Best of all, it's a bargain. If you're close to the 2 or 3 train, you're close to a rewarding field trip to Fieldtrip. Get your permission slip signed and go! read more
