Fieldtrip is a welcome addition to my neighborhood, otherwise over-run with Soul Food tropes, fast food joints/chains, and monstrously ambitious high-end spots enjoying the cheaper rent. It is truly refreshing to see a place priced for Harlem residents open up with a genuinely novel idea rather than as a "Harlem-ized" tribute to something that worked somewhere else. "Rice is culture" is the mantra here, and the simple and direct entree menu is populated with what we inelegantly call "rice bowls" in American English. Rice is almost completely ubiquitous in human cuisine, absent as an indigenous food only in regions where it can't be cultivated. The people behind Fieldtrip noticed this and they built their culinary world tour based upon that insight. I ordered the veggie bowl because I mostly focus on eating plants these days. I was asked "vegetarian or vegan?" when I placed my order at the counter. I am actually neither. The query was presumably about a yogurt-based sauce included with this dish and I opted for it. One nice service touch was that the cashier took my name off the plastic I paid with, instead of asking me my name right after I handed her something with my name on it (a pet peeve of mine). I value that kind of thoughtful counter service. The open kitchen is in the front with a row of tables down the opposite side of this typical shoe-box restaurant space. The decor is modern and unpretentious, while I was there heady rap set the scene musically. The staff are friendly and helpful, food is served in recyclable bowls with heavy plastic cutlery. Put simply, its a nice space that knows where it is. This is south central Harlem, Central Park is a short walk downtown, the 116th 2-3 Subway stop is steps away. No $35 entrees here, the beer selection is judicious and well-curated. The veggie bowl starts, at the bottom, with flatbread, another culinary ubiquity, topped by rice of quality sufficient to please any expert, then topped with roasted vegetables and a yogurt-based sauce. On first glance, it seems kind of casual and thrown-together, like what I do when perusing a large buffet with a bowl in hand, but once I began to eat it I understood that it is far more thoughtful than that. The flavors blend well, I immediately began to wonder how they got all of the bitterness out of their brussel sprouts. It takes talent to make something appear casual that was actually thoughtfully planned, but Fieldtrip pulls it off. This realization caused me to appreciate the thoughtfulness than goes into every part of this place, from the menu to the decor to the vibe. This is a restaurant that knows (and likes) where it is and what can be done with the mindful execution of a simple and coherent idea. Best of all, it's a bargain. A friend of mine told me about this restaurant and we were near the restaurant today March 20th (the one on Lenox Ave/Malcolm X Blvd) and decided to order. What a find! The food was fabulous, tasty and healthy. The staff was pleasant, they allowed me to swap out items I could not have, the order was ready in a timely fashion and everything we ordered was outstanding. My friend and I are extremely picky, my friend more than I, but we were both impressed with the whole order. We tried the yucca chips w/ carrot dip, she had the shrimp bowl (minus the coconut flakes) with added salmon and crab pockets (similar to crab rangoon). I wanted the beef brisket but since I can only have 100% grass-fed beef I was able to swap shrimp for the beef and Nana's bread. We were blown away by everything! Nothing was disappointing. I'm not sure, had you asked me before coming to Fieldtrip, whether I would have been excited at the thought of a vaguely Asian-sounding black rice bowl with the bite and effect, somehow, of soul food (especially if you told me it'd be marred by pineapples), but here, it works. To keep the pineapply bowl from angering me with its sweetness, we also ordered some bao with a vegetable-and-grain mix dolloped with a whip of avocado and some cheese, which was good, but ultimately unneeded as the bowl really wasn't that sweet. The piri-piri sauce gave the tender salmon a good kick, and the edamame studding the black rice was the backup generator of umami after the salmon had been finished. read more

Yucca chips was interesting, mostly tasty only a tad hard to eat since it kept breaking in odd chunks as you bite into it. Chicken bowl was ok and the quinoa buns were probably best tasting of what we got. There are maybe two pieces of yucca chips that come on top of the quinoa buns which is probably a good place to start to see if you like it and then get some more. Food was good, I suspect, a decent choice if you are in the area. read more

We recently ordered for pickup twice from Field Trip. The dishes are really tasty and also healthy! Loved it both times and we'll definitely be back. Recommend the crispy chicken, the veggie bowl and the Nan bread. We haven't tried everything yet but look forward to making our way through the menu. There was a mix up with my order and my blood sugar was low and I was very upset about it. Basically they said I placed an order for pickup which I did not and when notified by the delivery app that it needs to be delivered they apparently said they wouldn't do that. The order was canceled and just as I received another meal I got a call from the restaurant asking for my address to send out the order that had been sitting there all this time. I placed the order at 5:31pm...they called at 7:32pm. I told them it won't be necessary as I had made other plans for dinner. I decided to change my review because the food is good, but they do frequently forget something. This is the first bad experience I've had but seeing as someone tried to make it right I will give them another chance. read more

I was in the neighborhood and decided to look up a place for lunch beforehand. I decided to bring some friends here since we were only a couple of blocks away. This space is clean. They have complimentary water if you don't want to get a drink. Harlem has a lot of great places to eat and there are more new eateries opening up. Fieldtrip is a great option for a casual lunch or dinner. As for price point, a little more expensive than some options in the area, but it's also different. The ingredients are fresh and they pay attention to presentation. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I like how this place is a fusion of rice dishes so the flavors are unique. We ordered the braised beef, shrimp and a salad. It doesn't seem like a lot of food, but it is pretty filling. I wouldn't say that I'd make a trip here just to give them a try, but if you're in this part of Harlem, they are a great option! read more

I had been looking forward to trying Fieldtrip for some time and ordered the Crispy Chicken Bowl and the yucca crisps. I give it 3.5 stars. For the price, I was expecting a slightly bigger portion but it was mostly filling. The bowl was good but didn't blow me away. In my opinion the sauce could have had more flavor, and I would have liked more crisp on the chicken. The fried rice and greens that came in the bowl were great. The yucca chips were just okay. I love the concept of this spot though & I'd definitely be willing to give them another try with perhaps a different bowl for next time. read more

A great addition to Harlem. As a long-time Harlem resident, I'm always excited when a great restaurant opens up nearby. I highly recommend dining in at this spot. It's a fast service restaurant with a comfortable and clean dining area. It's very child-friendly and a great spot for lunch or dinner. My favorite dishes so far are: - quinoa bao buns (amazing!!) - seafood gumbo (get it while it lasts, they run out by the evening) - vegetarian rice bowl (comes with piece of nana's bread) - the black rice (order it as a side!) - market greens (eat this with the black rice- yum!) - nana's bread (very similar to roti--yum!) I also tried then shrimp bowl and the crispy chicken bowl, but I was surprised that I preferred all of the sides and vegetarian bowl over these two. The shrimp bowl came with sticky rice and I wasn't a fan of having such a large portion of sticky rice. I think the dish would be better with a larger ratio of vegetables and shrimp versus a huge amount of sticky rice. And trust me, I love sticky rice, but it was way too much rice is proportion to the rest of the bowl. The crispy chicken bowl was awesome, but I would opt for the bbq sauce on the side. There was too much sauce on my chicken. The Carolina gold rice was perfection though. My favorite dish is a side of Black Rice and market vegetables. I could eat that all day long, every day. I also looooove the gumbo too. The quinoa cakes in the bao buns are amazing... a surprising favorite. Finally, I have to say that the staff are amazing. They are really knowledgeable about the food and ingredients that go into the dishes, and they are just down to earth, courteous people. P.S. The only downside to my experience at this spot was that I was harassed by two guys sitting in their car around the corner on 115th. One of the guys rolled down his window and nastily said, "you better remember what neighborhood you're in..." well, it didn't keep me from moving there or eating there did it... read more

Harlem on the rise with healthy food options , not inexpensive but excellent food choices & portion controls ... Its unfortunate eating healthy cost a small fortune in certain communities which probably prohibits people who need it the most . I had the salmon meal ,crab pockets , & a large lemonade/ ice tea mix ... it was tasty everything seasoned well, the fish was a quarter of what I thought was a normal serving $25.25 was the total for my lunch. This place is really confusing. It seems like the dish components don't match and are clashing like a bad band. Individually though, the flavors are tasty and fresh. I was happy to see a clean fast causal spot open up in Harlem, but unfortunately I think they could spend some time rethinking the execution of some dishes. The sticky rice is a sore thumb to some bowls and it feels like you NEED the sauce to mask all of the conflicting flavors youre getting. Staff seemed a bit confused by it all as well. Everything is FRESH... Chef JJ's latest venture takes us around the world on a quick gastronomic trip that allows us to visit major continental cuisines from China, Laos/Thailand to the Gullah Islands of the Carolinas, through the flavors of RICE. Rice is paired with a protein and veggies that are traditional but with Chef's contemporary POV. The best bowls are the Beef with Texas Brown rice and savory black beans and the Chicken with Carolina's Gold rice and dices of carrots. Each bowl also came with sauteed Broccolini. The Salmon bowl with China's Black rice needed work in the flavor department, Piri Piri Sauce included. Bland all around. The Salmon tasted poached or steamed with just water and no aromatics or seasoning. The Black rice was dull and lacked seasoned broth to cook in. They were out of the Shrimp Bowl, as the Sticky Rice was gobbled up quickly. There is also a veggie bowl with Quinoa. I'm carnivorous who plays in the Vegan world so this was not for me. The Yucca chips (think large tortillas) are well-seasoned, light and crunchy. The Naan bread is homemade chewy goodness. It would be nice if a dish with Naan as the vehicle was offered. It IS a staple of the Veggie/Quinoa bowl though. The Dragonfruit Lemonade was DELISH to wash everything down. It is a nice sized cup (large), as I could not finish it all. There is also regular brewed tea available. The staff was professional and congenial. They quickly cleaned after each guest and kept the water and supplies fully stocked. Overall, I LOVED this place. I wish he would do a 31-flavors of rice (just because I am greedy and love to travel through cuisine) but I respect the streamlined approach, as it is done WELL. I was blown away by this restaurant. The menu seems like another "bowl place" similar to Dig Inn or Sweet Green but with different ingredients. Though I would still consider this "another bowl place" I would highly recommend coming back. Pricing: Everything is reasonably priced for the quality of food. I got the salmon bowl for $12 and a side of crab wontons for $5. Taste: Amazing flavors! As mentioned above, I got the salmon. It had a very interesting sauce which seemed to be some form of butternut squash. I loved how much food you got in a portion. You will not leave hungry! The crab wontons were great. OMG ~ this food is sooooooooo good!! Started with the Crab Puffs ~ which actually have REAL crab (presumecits real. Tastes as such). They are these light, fluffy and incredibly tasty poofs of pure heaven! My second was the Curry Shrimp ~ swoon. Words can't describe the wonderful melding of flavors! The curry has just enough "kick" the rice base is like a down comforter on a cold day, and you don't have to search for the shrimp. There are tons! What a wonderful meal. Wasn't impressed by the food. It tasted bland and all over the place. The staff seemed like they didnt know what was going on. Went there because mt friends were victims to all the buzz and didn't really understand the concept. I'd definitely rather goto dig inn that had more options. They have pre sent tiny bowls that don't really do the palette any justice. It reminds me of the fusion places that try to hard and don't work at all. The space is cool they have water and a few high tables with no chairs, which make a ton of sense(sarcasm). The tables is the back are laid out cool like a fast food spot. Even though the places functions as a gentrified fast food restaurant, the workers seem like they try to avoid cleaning tables. The music is great though. And they add a 22% tip to everything which doesn't make sense since they don't bring food to you and they have no idea what they are serving u less the head chef is there. read more

I don't eat here with much frequency but whenever I do I'm usually super impressed. Unfortunately it seems the quality control isn't what it used to be - the rice in my bowl was undercooked and al dente, and my salad was missing the dressing, crispy cassava, and carrots as it's listed on the menu. First time reviewer still floating on the high of a seamless delivery and dining experience. I was a little grouchy about not having the option to switch out brown rice in the braised beef bowl I chose, so imagine my surprise in the first bite: fluffy, buttery rice. Tender, well seasoned beef with some kind of stock, jus, juices that made my heart smile. The greens! So tasty. So balancing. Yes, I did feel good about myself for eating vegetables. The portion was *generous* - and I say this as a person with a quite healthy appetite. Again, I was pleasantly surprised. My meal came quickly, still warm, well packaged and neat. I literally ate to my heart's content and still couldn't finish the bowl. I just found my new go - to lunch spot and couldn't be happier. Went to this spot since the reviews were good, my girl ordered a veggie bowl, I tried to order crab balls but they were out, so I ordered a fried fish bowl and asked them to add shrimp....they were out of shrimp. Mind you it's a Sunday afternoon and only 2 other people were in there eating. The order ended up being two bowls and 2 drinks and 2 sides...it was almost $60 Long story short the food was bland and the prices were ridiculous and half the stuff I wanted to order they didn't actually have available. This was a treat. Fresh, tasty, healthy, and a really interesting story. The place is nice and trendy. Prices are good. Not to mention feeling really full. We had the crispy chicken bowl, the salmon bowl, and the fried crab balls. The service was prompt and the lady was nice enough to bring us some yucca chips to snack on! The food came shortly afterwards. Both of our bowls were very tasty. The rice that accompanied the crispy chicken reminded me of fried rice- a NY staple. With the homemade soy sauce it was perfect. The chicken itself was moist and tender. The salmon bowl, in my opinion, was even better. The black rice was flavorful and kind of spicy. We crushed everything. Sadly I could not get in here on day one but I grabbed some coworkers and made it happen today. We took a Fieldtrip literally around the corner and we not disappointed! The ambiance clean, chic, and modern. There is ample seating and the decor is super cute. The themes Fieldtrip and Rice is Culture are tastfully expressed throughout the reastaurant even in their gender neutral bathroom. The food was amazing! We are all foodies so in one lunch we expored half of the menu. It was like a fieldtrip around the world. The braised beef with Texas brown rice and wok vegetables was seasoned just right. Vegetables tender crisp perfect and the brown rice flavored and cooked just right. The carrot sauce with the Nana bread delicous. We enjoyed the crab pockets. Crisp on the outside delicous on the inside! The salmon and China black rice with curry sauce was absolutely amazing! The veggie bowl was tasty and the beans were well seasoned. We were all very satisfied but had no room for ice cream. I guess that means we'll be back soon! Great job on food presentation and customer service. Is there such a thing as a rice head? I don't think I ever have rice - quality, variety, texture, etc. - much thought before, but Fieldtrip has made me a believer. Great, fresh options of bowls each with a different variety and rice and bright, delicious toppings. Great spot for a healthy lunch that doesn't leave you feeling overly stuffed, and at a decent price point. The hot honey plantains are not to be missed either. The Bao Buns and Crispy Chicken Bowl did not disappoint! Being a first timer I didn't know what to expect, and my stomach continues to give thanks in digestive murmurings. The Bao Buns were a pleasing balance between tangy avocado sauce and creamy mozzarella, pulled together by a hearty veggie patty. Yucca chips, WOW The Crispy Chicken Bowl further comforted my cold, construction worker soul. The chicken was smothered in savory BBQ sauce over a warm bed of rice. The rice was fundamentally sound, heartwarming in every bite, and in full support of FIELDTRIP's credo. Collared greens, Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes strewn throughout helped bring this bowl home. The service was excellent. This is be a great healthy lunch spot, similar to Dig Inn. The quinoa bao buns are a MUST TRY! Those were even better than the bowls, in my opinion. They're so flavorful and the buns are soft and warm. As for the bowls, we tried the shrimp and braised beef. The shrimp had crispy coconut on it which added a great texture, and the green curry was amazing. The beef bowl came with beans, which I enjoyed, although I still liked the shrimp bowl better. The rice in the shrimp bowl happened to be a little mushy for me. However, the quinoa bao buns were so good that I'd definitely come back just for those; the buns plus another side would be enough for a full meal for me. read more

I finally made it to Field Trip last week and had an amazing experience there from start to finish. We ordered every vegan/vegetarian food item possible and everything was outstanding! The customer service was also excellent from when we first walked in to the time we left. The music was great and I noticed art by local artist RD on the back wall, which was a nice touch. The restaurant was clean and bathroom was well maintained. Plenty of seating and some standing tables in the front. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant again. Best plantains I've had in a looooong time. Might just be my new weekend errand snack! Well done chef J.J. Johnson! I stopped by this new hyped-up spot and tried the shrimp with rice dish. What a disappointment. The photos on their website show bright, crisp, fresh bowls. I assume mine looked like that 8 hours before I was served, because mine was total mush. The rice was cooked well, but the veggies and the shrimp were all overcooked, soggy mush. When shrimp are cooked, please stop cooking them. They were gross. I finished about half my bowl and tossed the rest in their trash.
