At the beginning we asked them to split the check by table -but they combined it for 20 people at the end so we had to sent it back and it took an hour to sort that out. A best kept secret of mission bay for innovative and cutting edge cuisine... who would have known it would be tucked away among all those palm trees in the Dana Hotel? With Eric Manuel as the new Chef de cuisine, Firefly is not the typical hotel restaurant cuisine. According to the menu online, they do have the necessary kid friendly items for the tourists and kids, but adults come all, because the menu served up is sophisticated. Our table seemed to get everything, so this review was the best of the best. A fresh tomato salad with watermelon was in perfect balance with its spicy spicy jalapeno dressing. For someone who is not a salad fan at all, this heap of microgreens was beautiful in many ways. The hot dressing with a legit kick was counterbalanced elegantly with the coolness of the watermelon, making it a little party in your mouth. A dining favorite for our table, the mussel soup with a broth infused with kimchi was layered in flavors and packed a serious punch of tastiness. A little microgreen salad atop was quite pretty and added the necessary airiness to the dish. But back to that broth, I wanted to bathe in the broth! but witheld all temptation, because well... we were in public. :) A softshell crab atop of risotto was delicate and tasty. The softshell crab was cooked to perfection with that nice outer crunch, but the warmness of the middle. The braised short rib. MY GOD! Heaven over heaven of tenderness. When I attempted to get into the short rib, I used my knife and fork, but soon realized this was like buttah. A little wrist action with the fork was all I needed to break this meat down. Served with fingerling potatoes and a little surprise of bakchoy underneath, the dish was rustic with the short rib, but the freshness of bakchoy made it upbeat and clever. We managed to save a leetle bit of room for dessert, and we were gladly greeted with a dessert of marscapone berry cream sandwiched between these wafer/wonton things that have a much more sophisticated name. A light dessert with a little richness of the balsamic vinagrette berry reduction smear was a flawless finale to an amazing meal. Firefly is inviting and inimate. An attentive staff only seemed to add to the overall experienced. Overlooking the beauty of the harbor, we were able to catch the fireworks from Seaworld. Overall, a definite must for any foodie, but also anyone who just likes to eat well. read more

I went here for restaurant week mainly because the restaurant week menu appealed to me and the name of the restaurant sounded cool. It was a good pick! We got: First course: -bruschetta (REALLY good) -salad (okay -- buschetta was better) Second course: -short ribs (Loved this dish -- it melted in my mouth with deliciousness) -filet mignon ("medium" turned into "well done." Short ribs were definitely better) Third course: -chocolate + hazelnut (good if you really love chocolate) -vanilla something (pistachio-y) worth $30 (for each, so $60 total) for all three courses? definitely. I have to say again that service was great, but probably because the restaurant was only about half full on a Friday night. Our server and our busboy were super attentive. There aren't a whole lot of dining options in the immediate Dana Point area, so I was somewhat skeptic for a Monday lunch at this hotel restaurant with my family. The Firefly really positively surprised me! The service got off to a rough start -- took unnecessarily long to flag down a server at our outside table. But it was smooth sailing from there. They have a pretty good on tap selection -- unfortunately they were out of my first choice (30th St Pale Ale, Green Flash), so I had a Hired Hand (Iron Fist Brewing Co) pint instead. It was tasty. For food, I had fish and chips myself and my kid had spaghetti. Plentiful and tasty portions. They have a weekday happy hour for brews (and cocktails?), along with a different special each weekday. For example, on Mondays they have $5 appetizers that are awesome and generously sized for sharing. Totally worth a visit to The Firefly if you're in the area. read more

Can't believe I slept on this place for so long. I've lived in the PB / Crown Point area for 12+ years. Came twice with my family from out of town (parents, sister/brother in law, two kids - 2 and 4, and our dog) and it was a fantastic experience. Sat outside both times. Jose was our server one evening, Oscar the other. They were truly on point, making sure the kids got their meals ASAP to keep them happy. Beautiful spot, right off the bay, with some fun games if that's your thing (giant Connect Four and corn hole). Adult food and beverage options were delicious. Quiet for the most part. A little pricer and less noisy than Barefoot Bar (another place we love) and a great option for a nice dinner near PB, but not in PB. read more

2.5 stars The food was good. We had the calamari and Brussels sprouts for appetizers and I had the scallops which were delicious. Our server also made some pleasing wine choices for us. However, the before and after part of the meal is where the review starts losing stars. Word to the wise, if you make a reservation using OpenTable as I did, make sure to indicate whether you want to sit inside or outside. When we arrived for our reservation, the hostess asked us what we preferred. Since it was chilly, we chose inside and she said, oh, we don't have anything available. I told her I had a reservation and she said that I didn't indicate which I wanted. There isn't a choice to do that! She said, yeah, the website isn't too clear about that. We sat outside at a fire pit which turned out ok except she also let someone wait at our fire pit with us while he waited for his table. Um, what is that? Our first server was fantastic. She left for the night and the server who took her place was not. Also, in my OpenTable notes I requested the check be brought to me since we were entertaining friends. The hostess acknowledged this and yet, our request was not granted and it turned into an awkward moment when all we wanted was to have the check taken care of for our friends without arguing over who was going to pay. My husband and I were guests at the hotel for a few days. We had been eating meals off property this particular day wanted an early dinner. We walked in and no one greeted us. There were two people sitting at the bar and 4 employees working. We stood at the bar in front of one of the employees who didn't even acknowledge us and quite frankly seemed to go out of his way to ignore us. After a few minutes one guy asked what we needed. When we asked about dinner he had a bit of a snearing laugh and said they were in the middle of happy hour. He was very condescending and talked down to us as if we were idiots for not knowing that. We are locals, but, needed to stay at the Dana Hotel for over a week while some home repairs were completed. Boy, were we surprised when the hotel restaurant was so much better than expected. We actually continued to dine here regularly during our stay as the food and service were excellent! The breakfast buffet really has some delicious options - we especially enjoyed the yummy granola and sliced fruit to top yogurt and the housemade gravlax served with capers, chopped eggs, tomatoes, fresh chopped dill and/or chives. Also, the made to order omelet bar was great. Everything was so fresh. We found that they also have a great Happy Hour with aweome firepits that are blazing at night. We just might have tried all offerings, but, the standout is something that's not actually on the HH menu, but, really stood out and is reasonably priced. It's the Baked Humbolt Fog - a killer deal for $12. It's a warm cheese plate served with fried grapes, sliced apples, marcona almonds, honeycomb and crostini. This tasted like CA on a hot plate. I can be a tough critic, but, was very impressed by everything I tasted. This is a great spot to take guests or friends to soak up their awesome firepits. The Dana was a beautiful hotel, situated right in the middle of everything. My boyfriend and I checked out The Firefly for their happy hour which had great prices, but food was just ok. We both had a house red wine (which over the phone we were told were $5... happened to be around $8.50, no big deal - just didn't know). Wine was fine. We also ordered a $13 cheese plate and $5 brussel sprouts, but both of those weren't up to my standards. The cheese plate was cute, had 3 cheeses (two of which were really old tasting cheeses, so if you're not a fan of those, warning!) with some jam and nuts/dried fruit/fresh fruit. The bread wasn't anything special, just some sliced baguette. It would have been nice if the bread was toasted or something. The brussel sprouts were really REALLY oily. I saw some images that other people posted and they looked super crispy and dry (how I usually like my sprouts), but when we ordered them, they were just drenched in oil and mushy-ish. The outer leaves weren't very crispy, just kinda looked like they were slightly pan fried. Service was great and the atmosphere was very nice too. They gave us 50% off breakfast but after the happy hour tasting, we decided against it. I was hoping to eat dinner after the happy hour (we had it around 3-4pm) but the food just didn't digest due to all the oil and garlic so unfortunately we missed out on a dinner while visiting San Diego for only two days. Beautiful restaurant with lovely ambiance. The tables aren't crammed into every spare inch which is a very nice surprise. I went with a date for restaurant week and was very happy with my choice. The food was delicious, perfect portion sizes and the service was very good. I had the brie for my first course, sea bass for the main course and butterscotch pudding for dessert. My date had the butternut squash soup, lobster crusted fillet and cheesecake for dessert. All of it was worthy of compliments. One of the big pluses of this dining experience is that we didn't feel rushed at all. Often restaurants churn the tables quickly, making the meal one of speed eating and heartburn. Came to Firefly for lunch during restaurant week with my coworkers, and I was generally displeased. The service was slow, the food was blah, and I will probably never come back again. The only saving grace was the view of the harbor but even that wouldn't entice me back here. I had the garlic edamame for an appetizer and boyyyyy was it SALTY. It seemed like they boiled the edamame and then doused it in 1/2 cup of soy sauce. My grilled cheese and tomato soup entree was disappointing as well. For ~$10, I expected something at least semi tasty, but alas... that was not the case. The sandwich looked like it had been pressed too hard/long and was less than a centimeter thick, and the soup tasted worse than canned tomato soup... not sure how they could mess up a classic. Overall, spend your money elsewhere... I hate to crowd up Tom Ham's Lighthouse with great reviews, but if you want a view and similarly priced food, go there! It's infinitely better! read more

Had a great afternoon at Sunset Park and stumbled upon The Firefly. Terrace seating and we had a great view of the cooking demo. The hostess invited us to look in but we were ready to eat. We had Ceasar salad, calamari and wings...all starters and all delicious and ample portions, good sauces. Our waiter, Enrique, was such a nice guy. Serving us with professionalism and friendly chat. What makes him stand apart? He's genuinely interested in his customers and he listens. I couldn't remember the last time I enjoyed myself. Mellow crowd and atmosphere. We left just as the singer was setting up. What impressed me about her was the ease in which she did her set up and the casual way she interacted. I'm sure she's got a beautiful voice. My husband and I had three meals from here and all of which were terrible. Our first meal was Friday happy hour and we waited at least an hour for one round of drinks and an appetizer. We ordered the Duck tacos which were dry and the hummus. The carrots on the hummus plate were slimy and disgusting. The service was awful as we had to wait long again for a second drink and long to get our check. The second meal was Friday night dinner delivered to our room. We ordered a bottle of wine, a Hendricks martini, the Sea Bass and the Linguini Sausage and two orders of the Creme Brûlée. When we got the martini it was a well vodka martini, the sea bass was as dry as can be and the linguini barely had any sausage and the pasta was all stuck to its self. The "Creme Brûlée" had no custard texture like it should, it was more of a bread pudding and the flavor was awful. The third meal was Saturday night which we had in the restaurant and again the service was as slow as can be. We ordered the Chicken with gnocchi and the Beef Spare Ribs. The chicken was so dry and the gnocchi was some how dry yet oily. The Spare Ribs were cooked well but the sauce was way too salty and the mashed potatoes had some sort of green oil in them that made them taste awful. We spent hundreds of dollars on food that was not finished because of one reason or another and the worst service I have ever experienced. I have included pictures of all the food we got. There was no reason for the slow service either as the restaurant was not busy and they had plenty of staff walking around. I gave one star because I had to. read more

We LOVE this place! The staff and chefs are amazing. This is our hidden gem! They've done some great birthday dinners and special occasions. Finding nice resturaunts that cater to us can be difficult because we don't eat meat and we are pretty much vegan. We give chef Mariana, Justin & Eric advance notice and they customize a four course meal for us. They bring out dishes explain them to us and we really feel like food network critics. The steak was just average. The fish tacos amazing. Two reasons for the four stars (and not five) were: 1) they brought us a pouch of Kraft blue cheese salad dressing for the garden salad. I ordered the sea bass and my boyfriend ordered the 5oz filet mignon. The sea bass was undercooked, and the cooked parts came out dry and tasteless and probably needed more salt. The rice that came with the sea bass was good though. My boyfriend's filet came out medium well (he ordered medium-rare). He liked the potatoes and sting beans that came with filet. The service was sub-par. Our waiter didn't come by to see how our meal was and when he did, it was only to fill up our water once after our meal was finished. He was also slow to give us our bill and when he did, he forgot to include the coupon we gave him. Overall, we do not recommend this restaurant--we've had better. read more

Came here for restaurant week and got the cheese platter and the beef sandwich. cheese platter went beyond my expectations! garnished generously with fruits, jam, garlic, dried fruit, and tomatoes. i love cheese! and the meat in the sandwich was so tender and flavorful! the view was also amazing: beautiful SD bay right outside the tall glass windows! the only reason why i give it four stars instead of five was because there was only one server in there, and it was difficult to get a hold of her. Also, I get that I look young for my age, but she never offered us the wine/alcohol menu and automatically took away the wine glasses at our table. We were staying across the street at a large hotel resort so the intimacy of The Dana boutique hotel and its Firefly Restaurant on mission bay was a calm in the storm. Lovely spot, nice ambience the menu choices were limited but had promise. Unfortunately my love of meatloaf set me up for tragic disappointment. The meatloaf had little flavor and was slathered in a sweet tomato paste, and the mashed potatoes were odd. My fault ordering an unknown not vetted meatloaf. My friend had the Shrimp & Grits Special which was ok. Potentially Much going for the place but not quite what it should or could have been. Crank it up a notch, I'd like to have a reason to give the place another try. read more

The place and ambiance looked nice but the food and service was awful. We ordered chicken tortilla soup and it was a chicken chili with tortilla strips, avocado and cheese on top. Flavor was ok, but we expected a tortilla soup... not chili. We ordered our entrees, wild mushroom fettuccine ($22) and the waitress recommended adding shrimp, so i did. When it came, there were 5 shrimp on top but there was no flavor in the dish. Turns out they charge $3 per shrimp. So my tasteless meal cost $37! The only good thing was that it was big enough to feed my husband and I because his meal was inedible. He ordered the poke entree. When it came the presentation looks nice until we saw the raw fish was brown and gray. He is far from squeamish and not a picky eater but he refused to eat any of it. After waiting forever for everything, we decided let's get desert since you cannot mess up a cookie and ice cream... boy we're we wrong! I think the cookies in the plastic box at the grocery store are softer than what we got. The cookie wasn't warm, soft, or anything. Only credit it gets was for size. Needless to say, our bill was almost $100 for eating 1 entree and a desert since we didn't want food poisoning from the gray fish. read more

My stay at the Dana included a $30 a day breakfast credit at any of the two in site restaurants. My friends and I picked the Firefly for breakfast located steps away from my room in the 1100 building. I ordered coffee with the Eggs Benedict while my friends ordered the gravlux and breakfast burrito. My meal was delicious! My friend enjoyed her gravlux, but my other friend claimed his burrito was "just alright". The other items on the menu sounded tasty but I would def recommend the Benedict and the gravlux. read more

But, since I'm rounding up and also the overall ambience was a 5.... here we are at rating of 5 stars. The breakfast/brunch buffet is a great deal. 18.95/adult, free for kids 6 and under. The selection is generous- potatoes, bacon, sausages (not your normal sausage links), pancakes, French toast, assortment of breads, Gravalax (salmon with choices of toppings capers, chives, tomatoes, eggs), customize your own omelette or eggs. Choice of drinks included: latte, mocha, cappuccino, chai tea latte, juices, milk. Cereal, oatmeal, delicious granola (I had this for 3 days straight and it was so good). Assortment of fresh fruit. The food was warm and tasted freshly prepared. Seasoning was great. On Saturday and Sunday- in addition to the breakfast option- there were lunch options- Rosemary chicken, fish, beef, rice pilaf, salad... There was a slight difference between Saturday and Sunday's lunch options. There is an assortment of desserts as well. The presentation is very nice of all the food. For dinner we tried the Thai wraps, Caesar's salad, seabass, prosciutto wrapped albacore. Everything was very tasty except the albacore- it was very dry. The Seabass with the mushroom risotto was amazing. I loved the way the salad was made in its whole lettuce leaf and so fresh. The seasoning was perfect. Service was great... Bianca and Kelly were great. The chefs were awesome- especially those making the omelettes. There were 2 servers who were kind but a little less attentive to detail than others we have had. But, this wouldn't deter us from returning. I would so return here. I would check the actual menu as I think someone's they must change up the items from time to time.
