This place is always crowded after club hours on Friday and Saturday night. Driving up North Vermont and when you see a huge crowd on the corner in the middle of nowhere, you've found Fred 62. Place is what you would expect from a retro diner like the ones in the movies: laid back, chill and fun. If you get a chance to sit at the counter, try to read the back of the waiter's shirts. Some of them are quite hilarious. Now the food: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the lox sandwich. Lox, cream cheese, scramble egg, and hash brown. I never imagined all my favorite food coming as one would be such perfect harmony. If you don't get an idea how good this is, THIS, is how good it was: this was the one and ONLY thing I remember from the night I blacked out. THAT GOOD. I've also tried their standard breakfast dishes wish hash browns, eggs, toast and the alike. Nothing too special but when you're juuuust a little tipsy and having fun with your friends? It tastes amazing. Their strawberry/berry waffle is also BOMB (while tipsy AND sober). Ask them to kindly pile on lots of powder sugar for you, pour some syrup over them, spread a generous amount of butter. You have just invited yourself to a heart-attack feast, in a good way. Seriously, this is BOMB. Wide variety of choices on the menu. I even spotted Asian noodles but have yet to try it. Milkshakes are yum. I remember my friend ordered this brazilian bonanza-ish kind of thing (forgive me I can't remember the name but I remember it sounded like a carnival). There was ice cream, there was whip cream, there was caramel and waffle and a whole bunch of other things piled on; it looked like heaven to sweet-toothed peeps. Parking's generally easy except club nights, which may just require you to walk just a little. There's plenty of street parking. And the best part about this place beside the food; it's 24/7! Fun place with anything and everything your heart desires... Only, be forewarned that the food is kinda' average tasting to those who have NOT just spent an evening out drinking. Hubby tried the Eggs Benedict. I don't recommend it. The sauce was not delicious, the eggs were overcooked, and the hash browns were disappointing. I ordered the Dime special offering two eggs, two strips of bacon, two pancakes and hash browns. I specifically asked for my eggs to be cooked fully because I'm preggers, but I was served two runny sunny-side-up eggs. Hmm. Bacon was okay. Hash browns were the same ones my husband was served. Not seasoned. Not delicious. The only saving grace? The pancakes. The pancakes I had were nice and fluffy. What else? The Mac Daddy Mac n' Cheese balls. We saw them on the menu and couldn't resist. Perambulating the City of Angels searching for wonderful eating spots, I was very pleased with my first experience with Fred 62.The atmosphere was relaxing and the theme of the restaurant fitted perfectly with my expectations of a typical American Diner. The food choices were diverse and pretty straightforward, from typical American breakfast delicacies to Latino dishes and even East Asian savory food options such as the udon. After having numerous thoughts about what should I order, I decided to start off with the infamous mac and cheese balls as my appetizer, the New Amsterdam as the entree, and the Bossa Nova Waffle as the dessert. The mac and cheese balls were absolutely delightful to my taste buds. It's "crunchy on the outside, chewy in the inside." Together with its not-so-heavily made macaroni and cheese filling, this appetizer would definitely be a must-try. The New Amsterdam was a breakfast burger toppled with strips of crispy bacon and scrambled eggs. The buns' quality remind me of a lower-tier version of Umami's yum-yum hamburger buns. The burger was solid but I would prefer taking the bacon strips out because it was a bit too salty. The Bossa Nova Waffle, obviously, puts an amazing end note to Fred 62's perfectly-composed-late-night-food-symphony. The waffle was served scorching hot, toppled with a gargantuan scoop of vanilla bean ice-cream and whipped cream. This dessert was simply DELICIOUS! Overall, Fred 62 deserves 4 stars out of 5. The food was surprisingly good considering that this restaurant only deserves 3.5 stars average on Yelp. The waiters were attentive and friendly, with a big smile on their face. This place was OK. I thought the food was OK. It wasn't anything to write home about but it is definitely worth what you pay for it. I personally believe they need to clean their ice machine because our ice tea had little chunks of what looked to be mold in the ice. The server brought us new drinks and the probem was solved. I really like the atmosphere and I felt really comfortable. The staff was super friendly wearing T-Shirts that say slogans like "Once you go Barack you won't go back" and "We support married gay chickens". I thought it was adorable and it definitely makes a statement of the equal rights this business stands for and Fred 62 gets my vote. The only reason they get 3 stars instead of 5 is because of the dirty ice machine issue. I have seen the same thing on Gordon Ramsay's show so I knew what it was when I saw it in my glass but they did take care of it for us. We will be back here for sure without question. read more

Nice breakfast atmosphere. I love the quirkiness, as I am also. The combo of old school colors and pinstriping is an awesome touch throughout. The booths are comfy, the t-shirt saying are h-i-l-a-r-i-OUS. I would love one (hint). Food is pure, clean and fabulously combined with their ingredients. The menu is a fraction of what it used to be. Waiter said they're bringing back the old menu...in a month, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I got the impression that LACC students use this place as a study and breakfast cafe. I missed coming here, early in the morning after an all-nighter with work, and such a diverse crowd would fill the place. I'm try to be fair and acknowledge improvements. I've been 2x in the passed year and the wait staff were very nice. The only reason I've been back (more than once ) to a place I didn't even like anymore - is convenience. And maybe nostalgia from when it was pretty good and fun to go to. Anyway, I've been back for beers and recently a full dinner with the family. Food was good for all 4 of us. If it was any other place and it was my first time here I'd probably have put down 4 stars. The best place in town for a casual al fresco dinner for 20 at 2:15 am. Nothing beats the feeling of taking over a big stretch of Vermont Ave. sidewalk with a bunch of post-last call friends gathered around five shoved-together tables.... Okay, so a lot of things beat that feeling, but it's still quite satisfying. Simple diner food in a hip but friendly setting. Hard to go wrong with the Charles Bukowski (grilled ham & cheese sandwich) and fries, or perhaps a big plate of bacon & eggs (breakfast in the middle of the night!). If you are looking for a place after the clubs/bars to be where ITS still at, then this would be it; a hipster hangout. If you are just looking for some grub and not feel like waiting 30 min for a seat, go across the street to House of Pies. However, Fred 62 does have an awesome breakfast sandwich with sausage, hashbrown, egg, and cheese all between butter toasted buns. Note: Don't get the carne asada nachos, it is mediocre compared to Alberto's and other such establishments. But if you are drunk maybe it won't matter. Everything seems to taste good in that state. For breakfast I love the Alice's Egg Sandwich or the one with bacon & egg (New Amsterdam) The Pancakes Tatin (caramelized something) is also really really good. Best of all - EGGS FREDSTONE! Two poached eggs on thick tomato slices with bacon bits and hollandaise sauce. Unfortunately they stop serving this one at 12.30pm... For lunch I always order the SWS salad which comes with corn chips, black beans, corn, avocado, breaded chicken pieces. It's a massive salad. It's not that great but there's nothing else that I like on their menu. Fred 62 food is really like diner fare but for twice the price. I would rather go to an authentic old school diner. read more

Truthfully, my rating lies somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars. Fred 62 in a great location, it has great staff, great atmosphere, great hours (gotta love late night diners), and fabulous history that decorated in a quirky manner throughout. Now, is there great food? Hmm, not so much. First of all, the menu might as well have chapters included in it - it's so long with its American, Asian, and Mexican dishes. While some find this intriguing, this is always a warning sign for me - what's their specialty? After a few trips, I've learned that the do fairly well with breakfast options and the milkshakes are divine! The supper menu won't change your life, however. My fries were cold-ish, my sandwich, bleh. The onion rings were off-the-hook! Unfortunately for me, I didn't order them. I tossed my dish to the side and mooched off my companion's meal. I used to come here all the time at all times of day because I lived right around the corner and I have to say that the best thing about the place is people watching (as is true with most spots in Los Feliz). I remember sitting at the counter one night when a guy came in and ordered chicken soup with a side of avocado. I like avocado, but really? with soup? Sure enough, he chopped up the avocado and put it into the soup. I asked him about it and he said that, when he was growing up, his dad loved avocado but they could only get it once a year where he lived, so he would just order up tons and eat it with everything. I was looking for a place to have brunch with a friend I hadn't seen in a while and another friend turned me on to this place, noting that although it wasn't one of those places requiring an hour's wait on a weekend morning, it was still good. I can't believe it took me this long to write a review on Freds!! I have been coming to this place for years! Ever since I discovered that there was a place open 24 hours that wasn't Denny's. I have had pretty much everything on the menu and one of my favorites has to be a diner staple. The grilled cheese. Mmmmm. They also offer a decent amount of vegetarian stuff. I was in wonder when I pulled up to this place at around midnight and there was a line out the door. I was in even more wonder when I sat down and opened the menu to a plethora of items ranging from california omeletes to beer-battered tuna fish patty sandwhiches to even southern smoked briskets, all at somewhat reasonable prices. I had the beer-battered tuna fish patty sandwhich, which was different, but also how I imagined it to be. Others at my table tried the omeletes and waffles which looked delicious. I would come back for the breakfast but would definitely also come back for some good late night hit the spot just drank my ass off, diner food. The food was good and probably deserves 3 1/2 stars, BUT, the service is GREAT and pushes my overall experience to 4 1/2 stars (Yelp! when are you going to let me use 1/2 stars?). I love great service! Our server made sure we had everything we ordered and more and was just super friendly. If you go with a CROWD, you will get good service. If you go by yourself, be prepared to be ignored from the moment you walk in. The food's really pretty good. Sexy-Diner Food, I'd call it - and it's open late. The waiters can be good, friendly people, but for the most part are too busy not-serving you to serve you. The waitresses are usually "cool" in that cliched "edgy" punk-rock style. Oh, hey: Remember the 90s when that vintage decor, 50s throwback vaguely rockabilly look was cool? Yeah. So do they. These gripes aside, the food is good. It's a fun diner and a really neat neighborhood and I HAVE had good experiences there with service - TWICE even! This is a find. Comprehensive menu that serves breakfast all day, a solid and diverse sandwich section that doesn't skimp on the ingredients, a few dinner plates, some korean/japanese dishes, a south of the border section and some tasty desserts. As noted, it caters to the hipster/los feliz crowd. I am not into the scene but didn't really care. The decor and style gives nod to a 50's diner but with more of an updated feel. I had the BLT with avocado that hit the spot. Because of the size of the menu, I can imagine some dishes are hit or miss but this is a spot to come to when you know what to order. I also decided to try out the peanut butter milkshake and that sealed the deal. It was one of the better shakes I've had in LA. This is a definite go to if you are in the area. I would give Fred 62 3.5 stars, but because of the fun decor, our awesome server and tasty pancakes, I'll bump it up to 4 stars! I came here on a Saturday night and seated immediately! I love the classic diner decor and atmosphere. And because of our great server, it made my experience even more enjoyable! I was given the recommendation of trying one of the breakfast sandwiches, so I chose Alice's Egg Sandwich - avocado, goat cheese, tomatoes, scrambled eggs & hash browns served on a buttery bun. It's a great choice for someone that wants an entree that's both filling and slightly healthier than some other options! My only complaint would be that the bun is a bit dry. Otherwise, it was a tasty choice! We were also told to try the pancakes, which Gourmet Magazine named "Best Pancakes In the World!" I can't say they were "blow you out of this world" good, but they were definitely worth it and much better than most other pancakes I've tried! I've been here twice, most recently yesterday. I've ordered the same thing twice... The Wimpy Burger. I really like that burger! It is really, really good and the fries aren't bad. Mind you, I dislike 90% of the restaurant burgers I eat. I'm all about the hamburger stand type burger. The atmosphere is very "a la hipstrer" and is fine. I can appreciate the fact that restaurants in SoCal need to maximize whatever shaded outdoor seating they have, seeing as how the sun is shining 75% of the time around here. But if the shady seating comes at the price of the customers comfort, enjoyment and ability to breath freely while remaining dry, I say get rid of an outdoor table or two. It was a gorgeous Sunday when I came here for lunch, sun out in full force, so not surprisingly everyone wanted to sit outside, myself included. When we were sat, there was only a single two topper way at the end of the sidewalk. It only seemed a mild drawback at first....until the smell of the neighboring trashcan-on-wheels set in. The sun was roasting whatever was in the trash and dear god, it stunk. The lunch scenario got a little worse though. As we were scanning the menu, a faint mist hit the back of my neck, arms and the side of my face. What the....? Not only were we seated by the dump, the door to the dishwashers' room was propped open immediately behind me and we were getting sprayed (albeit lightly) with dirty dishwater!!! Ewww! Gross! The place has two stars instead of one star because the food was solid and our waitress was nice. I reiterate that it was only solid. I ordered the roast beef sandwich with roasted red peppers red onions and horseradish. The roast beef was mediocre. I actually think the Boar's Head brand at Ralph's is tastier but the toppings I mentioned were a nice touch. It's served on an onion roll and mine was somewhat stale. My bf ordered the fried mac-n-cheese balls with marinara. I didn't eat them but he gives them a thumbs up. I did sample his meatball sandwich and soup side. Both were tasty, but nothing so special that I would need to return. Stank trash + dirty dishwater shower = bad lunch. Maybe I would feel differently had I sat indoors or scored one of the nice tables facing Vermont Avenue and overlooking the Sunday farmers' market. read more

The place is interesting to say the least, had an old diner's feel to it, which I can appreciate from a designer standpoint, but on to more important matters: The Food. I ordered their chicken pot pie. I would have to say it was the fanciest looking chicken pot pie I had ever seen. Chicken was great and so were the veggies, and that green sauce on the plate definitely made it (I wonder what it was - pesto?) However, the only part I didn't enjoy of the chicken pot pie was the crust. It was so HARD (that's what she said - haha so juvenile). I mean chicken pot pie crust is supposed to be soft and fluffy, but it was so hard that I couldn't actually cut through it. I was able to snap off the top using my fingers, but I just couldn't bring myself to eat it; i was expecting it to be somewhat edible at least. Other than that, this place does get pretty busy, be prepared to wait a little bit. The holy grail of diners and when in doubt; it will never fail you! When really hungry then without hesitation devour a Juicy Lucy Burger. When craving a desert, then demand a punk tart with two scoops of vanilla bean ice cream. And always always always order Mac Daddy & Cheese Balls My fondest memory of this place was on two specific occasions. Won't bore you and tell you just one. My friend picked me up from the airport as I returned from my trip to Boston. I had only been gone for a week but the first thing I told him was i'm hungry. Moving recently to LA from New Jersey, diner capital of the USA, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find a decent 24-hour diner. Clearly, I was wrong. Not only is Fred62 open 24 hours (awesome), the place is really cute, and every time I've been there, the staff has been great. What's even better though is that the food is delicious, much better than the standard diner fare. The burgers are BIG and perfectly cooked, and although I was nervous to order a Mexican-style frittata at a diner, I'm glad I did because it was amazing. I took a star off because the prices are a little high compared to other diners, but in my opinion, the clean environment, happy waitstaff, and great food makes it worth the extra couple of bucks. read more

I unfortunately had a bad experience today eating at Fred 62. My food was rather bland and the service was very slow. It seemed the entire staff was more interested in playing with a over sized Halloween spider that drops down on unsuspecting patrons as they enter than the tables they should have been waiting on. I've had past experiences here that were not this bad and I've also have some tasty meals ( the Thai Cobb salad is pretty good) but this weekends experience has turned me off. It's important for customers to feel they are getting good service and this time I feel like we were more of after thought. read more

Fred 62 was introduced to me from a friend of mine that forced me to eat one of the "TOWERS". Since then i have been a fan of this place and come here whenever we want something different. The food and service here is great. I would highly recommend a "TOWER SANDWICH", IF you are an EPIC person and want a challenge. Ahaha i was actually able to take a bite of the WHOLE sandwich, even though it made the roof of my mouth hurt Xp. Another must, i say are the pancakes. The pancakes are to die for here. I have had many great pancakes but i can strongly say that FRED 62 has the best PANCAKES EVER!!! I had an order of omelette with pancakes and it was the BEST!!! I dont know if it was just that night or if they sprinkled crack on it but MmmMmmMM~ *Heart their pancakes were DE-LI-CI-OUS!!! So check THAT OUT! Of course they have many other delicious dishes like hamburger *grool, pasta, sandwiches, etc. But i would say go for a BREAKFAST DISH or one of the TOWER sandwich at FRED'S I know it may be weird but i LOVE the ice they give you when you order a drink. This place is cozy and fun, service was great. The food was good and had fun names. I've been once for dinner and once for breakfast, both were good experiences. But I found it was a little pricey for what you get... $8 for one chocolate chip, peanut butter, and banana pancake is a little high. Came here on a "Thursday night" -- technically, Friday at 4am, Dec 24, 2010 A friend and I used to frequent this place for late-night diner food. He had moved to Texas, but was visiting over the holidays, so we hit it up after a night of partying at Heat Ultralounge. And it was just like old times. Minus the wait, since we were here a little later than the clubgoers (usually 2-3:30a). We quickly chose 2 seats at the counter, in direct sight of some cuties at a booth. The liquid courage had pretty much left my system (I'd hope so, since I had driven us there from OC), so I didn't approach. But the night still ended on a high note with the familiar taste of a Juicy Lucy and Eggs in a Hole, and cup of hot chocolate. Not too shabby. Went here for the first time recently and can say I had the best mocha shake ever. As for the food, it was alright. Not the best I've had. Not the worst. Definitely worth checking out. read more
