I'd like to say that I've been a fan of the Frolic since before it was cool, but it's been cool for way too long. As a bar goer/resident of Hollywood in the 80s/90s/00s, I can say that I've been drinking in the Frolic since before they went digital, since before they had a bathroom that worked (and accommodated handicapped peoples) and since before you could take the METRO to get there. This bar is one of the few remaining "dive" bars on the Hollywood strip that hasn't sold out, upscaled or replaced their Jiffy Pop machine with something that works all the time. Under the eaves of the Pantages Theater, the Frolic has seen it all, and then some, and just like the Hirschfeld caricatures covering the main wall, has stood the test of time, with just enough cracks to give it personality. It's a tiny bar, and even smaller on busy nights, but until you enjoy some drinks in the Frolic Room, you haven't really experienced a true Hollywood dive bar with all that that entails; strong, cheap drinks, a wide variety of bar dwellers, and the ability to walk out onto Hollywood Blvd, like so many movie stars before you, drunk. read more

Ah, this is a great dive bar right next to Pantages and I had no idea! We were on a hunt for just a beer and found this place on Yelp. They play all the NFL games and offer a variety of drinks. I love that this place kept its classic style and decor. Reasonably priced drinks and if I were in Hollywood, I would love to come here for a quick drink! After attending a 311 show at The Roxy (Sunset Strip), my friend and I were talking to some local fans who had suggested The Frolic Room for a nightcap. Being huge 311 fans and knowing the dive bar was a song of theirs, we HAD to go! The bonus was that the bar is only a 5 minute drive from the concert venue. The bar is small, but we had a great experience. The bartender served me the most delicious, spiciest Bloody Mary I have ever had. Although the cocktail was delicious and very reasonably priced for Hollywood, that came second to the great vibe I felt being in the bar. The bartender let me take ridiculous, tourist pictures, and we ended up meeting great people and continuing great conversations. This bar was Charles Bukowski's favorite and I can totally see why. I like this place so much. It's been my go-to place to get some drinks when I'm in LA. I met some cool regulars here who I had the pleasure of sharing some interesting conversations with. Had a really unforgettable experience here too. This place is a small dive bar that only occupies more or less 20 people. The drinks are great and really cheap plus the bartenders are really friendly. Great vibe in general as well, they have a jukebox here (so old school) and to be honest the first time I was here I felt like I was in some kind of movie, that feeling if you know what I mean. This is a great little dive bar with friendly staff, good drinks, and low prices. It's also right next door to the Pantages theater, so it's perfect for a drink before or after the show. The man out front on Sunday night 10/24. Total asshole. Asked for a masked after my vax card (which is fine) but scolded me on it. So as soon as I get inside he tells the bartender to not serve me for no reason. I'm assuming just because I'm in a dress and heels and I'm gays he's being a bigoted asshole. But who knows. Worth a review. Totals douche bar and don't even bother yourself going here not worth it. My wife and I were visiting Hollywood October 2022. We saw Frolic Room Bar on Hollywood Blvd and I remember hearing about this bar from YouTube videos so I was so pumped to try it out! We went in super excited to try some good drinks. We sat down and asked the bartender for a cocktail menu, he replied we don't have one. So I asked him to give us some options for cocktails that he could make so we could decide, he said "hey man this is a dive bar, we only do shots and beer so what do you want". Not sure why this place has 4 stars. The doorman, Issac, was disrespectful and completely out of line. He didn't accept my friends ID, claiming it was fake because it was an out of state ID. When she offered to show him another form of identification, he broke her ID and told her it was fake and wouldn't let her in. When I asked him why he would do that, he said we were belligerent drunk, and had fake IDs. Furious, I called the bar to ask for a manager, which the doorman claimed to be. The person on the phone told me they would be out in a minute to discuss the incident. After waiting a few minutes and no show from the person on the phone, I tried to call back but no one would pick up line. This place is completely unprofessional and disrespectful. I've been wanting to check out this bar for years and finally dropped in before a show at the Fonda. I got an old fashioned for $11, so price is reasonable, but it tasted awful. The bartender added soda? Totally ruined the drink. This bar is small and cozy, had a bit of an odor inside. There's a juke box but it was mostly country music playing when I was there on a Friday night around 8pm. It wasn't too crowded so seating was not an issue. So I asked, really confused, "Who?" He said "All of you." The back-story: Two friends (obviously gay guys) had just arrived in LA, actually their first trip here, from Tennessee. They checked into their hotel, and my wife and I met them for dinner (which did not include drinks). We picked up another friend, told them we would show them a few cool LA spots. And thus we began....ie THE FIRST STOP, pre-drinking, ie STONE-COLD-SOBER, was The Frolic Room. I grew up in Hollywood, and I have never been so ashamed of my city. This is not Oklahoma. This is Hollywood, and all I can figure out is the usually-kind bouncer did not like the looks of our friends. We left the Frolic Room and were treated beautifully at the Polo Lounge, not noted for serving out-of-control drunks. I am really perplexed, but more than that I am disgusted. So the first time I visited the Frolic Room was back in 2006 on my first ever visit to Los Angeles. (About the time I caught the California fever and decided I am going to do everything in my power to move here.) What brought us to the Frolic Room of all places. Well the 311 song by the same name of course. I am a HUGE un apologetic 311 super fan and my favorite album is Don't Tread on Me. We all went out to Holywood a group of friends who are also huge fans of the group 311. Like a tourist and the fan boy that I am I did the 'tourist' move of playing the song 'Frolic room' at the 'Frolic room' big no - no apparently. Well maybe not, maybe it was playing the song MULTIPLE times. The bartended pulled the plug in the juke box and then reset it. Frankly I don't blame him. I would do the same thing if idiot fans kept playing the Frolic Room at the Frolic room. We had a lot of fun that night. Now that I live here I do frequent the Frolic room. The place is awesome. It's a bare bones dive bar in Holywood with cheap drinks if I'm going out to see an Improv show at the Improv Olympic or something. Nick Hexum said it best in the song. "I like to mix with walks of life who live life on the other side." Lol He wasn't kidding you will see and probably meet, since the bar is in such close quarters people from all walks of life. Bikers, Porn Stars, Reality Show Producers, Grifters. If a sub-culture exists, you will find them there. I mean a casting director could find their 'type' here very easily. There are a lot of strange people who frequent a lot of strange sub-cultures. Now there is one bartender there who will continue to perpetuate the myth that 311 still hangs out there. This used to be S.A. Martinez's old stomp. But I guess they wrote a song to give this place a send off and send legions of fans to the Frolic Room. That okay I don't blame the dude. In reality its like the town in Scotland that keeps the 'Lockness' monster myth alive. If it brings the business I totally understand. I would not want to be swarmed by a number of 21 year old fan boys when I decide to get drunk either. Despite the fact that you wont see 311 there. THIS is a bar. Old hollywood feel, legendary not because of its prime location, but because of all the fun people have had in here. The ambience seems to encourage people to strike up conversations, which is great. Steps away from the Capitol building, and surrounded by awesome venues and theatres. Great to come before or after the Pantages for a drink (or during intermission). The original Hollywood mural is awesome. Best drink prices in Hollywood. NOTE though - this is a DIVE bar. You may be familiar with the Frolic Room as a result of it's face on the cover of 2010's "L.A.'s Best Dive Bars". I believe that the bar was given the cover on the basis of nostalgia. And I get it, the bar has served the good people of Hollywood for over 80 years, but should it be declared the poster child for all LA Dives? Heck, Wrigley Field is historically one of the most illustrious ballparks in all-America, but the venue is a [fill in the blank] hole. Although this may come across as being somewhat inimical, I mean no disrespect. I'm sure in it's heyday the Frolic Room was one of the places to be on Hollywood Blvd., but like Billy Crystal hosting this year's Oscars -- just way past it's prime As goes for the setup, the joint's narrow configuration makes it easy to venture from one end to the other. Behind the bar, a mural by Al Hirscheld (may he rest in peace) depicting his unique interpretation of Hollywood socialites that will instantly grab your attention. Electronic card games & a series of TV's (broadcasting major league fixtures, lotto results & yes...the Boondocks) provide entertainment for those wandering eyes. But don't blink, because at the corner of the bar sits a retro vending machine that sells...Cigarettes! Lighting fixtures are the problem here. The place is too lit for any dive setting. In addition, the men's restroom was out of commission -- which resulted in a long line of wait n' go to the lady's room (are we back in grade school here folks?). Before & after shows at the neighboring Pantages, the joint will get pack within a instant. But what saves the day is the staff behind the counter. One bartender taking multiple orders with no barback, all the while remembering what my associate & I had requested 30 minutes prior. I raise my glass sir Furthermore, drinks are generously priced (given the region) at $3.50 for brews & $6.50 for wells. Music overplaying consists of the Ramones, the Chili Peppers & B-52's (rather diverse). Clientele is mixture of die-hard regulars, Pantages patrons & Hollywood lovelies. With that being said... The joint is an ode to the former days of old school Hollywood. But something about this modern-day incarnation that I just can't put my finger on. To put it bluntly, the Frolic Room resembles the traits of another L.A. landmark.. Pink's on La Brea -- really more for the experience, but overrated read more

Stop #3 on our Charles Bukowski tour. Well sorta. We hit The Frolic after visiting Buk's bungalow over on De Longpre Ave where there is now an official Cultural Heritage Board Monument sign with the header: "Bukowski Court." Very impressive, and thanks to the people that fought for not only the designation but to forever preserve the bungalow its-self. So The Frolic is categorized as a Dive Bar on Yelp? Hmmm, shiniest, cleanest, and coolest Hollywood Dive Bar I have ever set foot in. We were there at 5:30 - 6:30 on a Saturday night so not sure if the later evening crowd makes it scream dive bar or not. Well, we did have one representative of that possible crew. I had the misfortune of siting next to "Rocky from Riverside" who was so drunk he could barely balance himself on his bar stool. That was fine until he insisted we play the "guess how old I am" game. I hit his age right on (29). He guessed me to be 17 years younger than I actually am (remember he was very drunk). When I told him my real age he grabbed my hand and sloppily kissed it. "You are my inspiration for living" he cried. Uh boy, bout time for stop #4 guys. Well this is one confirmed old Bukowski haunt and in the past they have even done Monday night readings of his work. Will have to check and see if that is still happening. Regardless, great vibe and service, and if you see Rocky ask him if his iPad still worked after he drowned it in Budweiser. Crowded, cramped, noisy, expensive, and full of hipsters... I can't say I enjoyed my brief experience at this place. The Frolic Room looks like it used to be the kind of relaxed dive that I would feel right at home in, and perhaps it still is at off-hours. When my party arrived on a Friday night, however, the place was packed to the gills, swelteringly hot, and incredibly loud. I felt a headache coming on almost immediately, so I figure I would just have one beer and use the restroom and then we'd be on our way elsewhere. Just going to take a leak here turned out to be a difficult task, though: I was brusquely informed by the restroom's door man that there was a lengthy queue ahead of me to use the can. A bouncer for the men's room; are you kidding me!? Also, how can such a popular and crowded watering hole get by with a one-holer?? We grabbed a couple of bar stools and I ordered my usual vodka tonic. It was really awful. The tonic was flat and I'm pretty sure even well vodka has some sort of taste to it.
