Down and dirty... One of the classic dive bars in this part of Hollywood Boulevard. Has not changed and I don't know 25-30 years that I've been going there. Good drinks. Strong pours. This is great bar to enjoy a few drinks while enjoying a night on the town. It's conveniently located next to the pantages which makes this a great spot for cocktails before the show. It's been painted black inside but there's a gorgeous art deco mural on the back wall and the bathrooms are surprisingly large and very clean. WOW, does the bouncer here have a terrible attitude. I've never seen anything like it. When we arrived last night around 7pm, he immediately started picking a fight with us for no reason at all and then tried to make it seem like we were in the wrong, and kept going on about how we had to "listen to his rules." Eventually he wouldn't even let us in -- again, for NO REASON. This was all completely unprovoked, and this is apparently a known issue with this particular employee, so why on earth is he still working there? He also mentioned their close business ties with the Pantages - why is the Pantages employing people who are openly hostile to their customers? Strange business strategy. Old school since 1930. I've been passing this dive bar for decades and this was my first time in here. The Pantages next door was crowded with patrons heading to see Hamilton, I'm glad they didn't clog this bar or I would've never gotten in. I was frolicking alone with a Guinness Draught in a frosted glass... I stopped by just the other day prior to a show at The Pantages next door. Despite its history of murder and intrigue, I felt totally safe here with the big, friendly bouncer and the weirdly mixed crowd of regulars (professional drinkers), a couple of French Canadian girls in their 20's, the old guy drinking water in the corner- playing with his smart phone and the Asian man and his little black/white dog. Soundtrack that day, "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo, "Peg" by Steely Dan, "Hooked on a Feeling" by B.J. Thomas and "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty...perfect for drinking two icy glasses of Guinness ($7 each). The oldest bar in Hollywood began as a private lounge / speakeasy in 1930. Howard Hughes later owned both the adjoining Pantages Theater and The Frolic Room. We can thank Mr. Hughes for that iconic neon sign! The famous and the infamous have frequented this bar...Sinatra, Garland, Charles Bukowski and the Black Dahlia was last seen here before her gruesome murder. A modern day murder occurred here in 2010 when a bouncer was killed by a patron. Despite its checkered past, the locals claim there are no ghosts here! I just moved to the neighborhood and this little hidden gym is in my neighborhood. Surprisingly a lot of locals go there even though it in a tourist area. I love a good hole in the wall bar . The bartender seemed very chill and nice . Older guy that's been working there a while had some good conversations. The drinks are reasonably priced and I got a drink pretty quickly. Not sure if the serve food but I would just eat before I go to a bar like that . They have closed at random different times during the week so I missed the last call the last time I went, just be more consistent with the closing times . read more

Reading all these reviews about the security whipping a man in Hollywood is crazy. You watch the video and it's a prank video that was edited to show that exact moment. That man was asking people for money as a social experiment, why do you think he was being filmed? My friends were the patrons that the "homeless" guy was asking money for drugs and they said the bars security had asked him previously to stop asking for money from patrons smoking outside. Slapping The Frolic Room a big high-five for putting its MySpace page/link as its web-site, on its FB page. Ha I have much affection for MySpazz. Bartenders? Great. Drinks? Strong, and a good deal. CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD DIVE BAR! It's a great cross-section of Hollywood life... Locals, tourists, Pantages intermissionists, "entertainment" types, union grips, an occasional hoodlum, and several aspiring actor/writer/musicians. The drinks are stiff. The restrooms aren't clean. But... the service is genuine and friendly. (Bartender Joel is AWESOME!) Hey, this is the first bar I went to in Hollywood when I moved out for Nick Hexum. I went there and liked it with my gf Susan. It became the band hangout and we went there a lot. Girls would dance on the bar as the bartenders repeatedly chanted, "No, dancing." If it's a hot night, ask the bartenders to flame the bar. They put lighter fluid all down the bar shelf and light it. The idea is to throw as much cash over the flames till it goes out. Totally illegal and highly dangerous but a lot of fun!
