However, I phoned the restaurant before its opening at 10 AM on Sunday, September 24, 2023 and Sara answered the phone. I'm assuming she is the owner. She was very courteous, kind and very thorough and addressed all my questions. If Sara is any indication of the caliber of this restaurant, we are locals and look forward to dining here. This is a long overdue review, mostly to forewarn folks from having too high expectations who, based on some website ratings etc etc might be best going elsewhere. Gabi James is fine as a kind of upscale bar restaurant. We had a very weirdly rendered version of an anchovy appetizer (see photos) and the scallops tasted like they'd been cooked in the flattop directly after a burger- and infact tasted a lot like cheeseburger as if just next to it some processed cheese were spraying askance in the scallop. These mistakes aside it was ok as a kind of whatever gastropub, but don't go here expecting anything exceptional. It's not clear how they've received such rave reviews in the past, maybe we were there in a day where the kitchen had entirely turned over staff or otherwise suffered some catastrophic event that allowed them to serve us what they did without any sanity checks. Update after owner's response: To exemplify that this wasn't a question of taste, Boquerones Matrimonio photos attached. These anchovies were of the type that you would use to make a diner Caesar salad kind of tightly bound and rolled into a log with frozen shaved butter all over the top of it? It was actually the saltiest thing I've ever been presented to eat, and was inedibly salty by any standard. Extremely salty! These had nothing to do with what you'd get in Spain or what anyone with a tongue could find purpose in. read more

I came in for dinner on a Friday night and even though we didn't have a reservation the friendly hostess still helped us get in! Definitely will be making reservations moving forward. Despite the restaurant being packed, our server kept checking on us, which is especially important in tapas as you continually order. The food was amazing and rich. The shrimp (gambas Al ajillo) was seriously mind blowing SO GOOD! My one complaint would be that the roasted mushrooms were not roasted, but sautéed. I probably wouldn't have picked these if the menu reflected it. The tortilla España had caramelized onion between thin layers of potatoes and was also AMAZING but my favorite item we got was the salad (citrus quince). This has been our favorite restaurant in one form or another for over 25+ years! However, the last few experiences have been disappointing at best. On both occasions, our drinks and our food took an overly long time to come out. On one of the occasions, although we ordered drinks immediately, our appetizers, which took quite a while, showed up before our drinks. I had to get up from our table and go to the bar to retrieve our drinks. When I did so, one of the owners somewhat rudely stopped me and had the server deliver them. No apologies, just dropped the drinks and left. Dinner was taking a very long time to deliver and our server had disappeared so we had to ask another server where our meals were. When they were finally delivered, they were stone cold. Even though the owners were aware of the situation, they didn't make any effort to come over and make it right. We paid our bill, left and didn't come back for a few months. When we did come back, we brought a couple of friends. We sat at the end of the bar. Drinks were delivered promptly. However, it took forever to get our food again. This time, they delivered our food but, not our guests. Our food was cold when it was delivered. We mentioned it to the bartender but, finished it anyway. Our friends meals were not delivered until we had finished ours! How does that happen when we ordered at the same time? In essence, it was a messy and embarrassing evening for us. The bartender didn't offer anything as an accommodation. When we were paying the bill, I asked the bartender if they were going to do anything like comp us a drink or dessert for the inconvenience and we were told they didn't have the authority to do so. So, after 25+ years of this being our go-to restaurant, two very poor experiences in a row have put an end to our patronage. read more

I opted for a smoky, bold one, and it was awesome. Lots of tapas/small plates to share, something for everyone. The Roasted Mushrooms were alright - needed more seasoning. As did the Tortilla Espanola, but the tortilla itself is done well. The Jamon Wrapped Dates were great - what's not to like about gooey dates full of bleu cheese in Spanish bacon? All Day Oxtail Ragu has been braised to melt-in-your-mouth tenderness, and the contrasting texture of crispy pasta is genius. I got a bite of Paella from a friend, and it tastes as pretty as it looks! Enjoyable bites, wouldn't mind coming back to try more. read more

Came here on a Saturday for brunch with friends. It's located in the Redondo village. It was pretty packed and parking is either street or metered parking. No valet parking available. We made a reservation before but when we went at 1230 there wasn't to many people. The wait staff is exceptional! They also sparking water for free, and for someone who needs to be burped it's a really nice touch! Now to the food and drinks! 3.5/5 oxtail hash. The meat overall is okay and it is mixed with potatoes and topped with two eggs. The bread that was served on the side were really good! 5/5 for the Americano breakfast sandwich. My friend devoured it all before I could even taste it but he said he would definitely get it! 5/5 Genny on the Block. Really nice smoky and full tasting. Today was my first brunch experience here! I was torn on my reservations and where to go but SO glad I chose Gaby James. Tue service was spectacular and the wait staff was so lovely. The food was and is always amazing and a great experience. We did partake in the bottomless mimosas and loved the rose & grapefruit. Too many good and amazing choices! The avocado toast was amazing and what can I say, who doesn't love an avocado toast! This one does not disappoint. Added an egg over medium to incorporate a protein! The papas bravas is delicious and a great thing to share for the table. The French toast is some of the best we have ever had- crispy exterior and soft interior. Cinnamon/churro type of vibe in flavor. The green eggs & ham is a great low carb/healthy option that is done really well. Eggs were perfectly cooked & the brown butter almonds on top made the dish. Also, interior is beautifully done & just an overall comfy yet welcoming feeling. For cocktails they have a super impressive gin selection which is amazing to me as I love gin&tonics. Absolutely the most unpleasant customer service experience I have had in an extremely long time. Booked my reservation online for myself and two friends to have brunch. Requested an outside table as one of our party had a service animal, with his identification clearly on him. Small animal, less than 5lb, who she had wrapped in a small blanket. When we arrived, we were seated outside on the patio and very excited to begin our drink orders and get ready for what we anticipated to be a delicious meal. Unfortunately, the same gentleman seating host who had taken us outside, seen the service animal (by the way, over 1/2 all outside tables had animals, many of them very big dogs, with them), told one of our party that her service animal had to go on the ground. She uses her service animal in the mode to which she needs for her wellness, and it doesn't serve that purpose on the floor. She told him that she was not going to put her dog on the ground and that he was violating her rights by making this request. He then went away for a few minutes and then came back and made the request again. This whole absurd charade went on while, nearby, not only were there tables with dogs, yes large dogs so they were on the ground, but there were small children making all kinds of noise and fuss and no one was telling them to sit on the ground or to sit still and be quiet. After discussion amongst ourselves, we left. We had a delicious meal at another restaurant. We will never come back to this restaurant. Another member of our party was also a Yelp Elite. She was shocked, as well, at the whole experience. TL/dr: Not abiding by service animal parameters, so skip this place. read more

Until last night this was one of my favorite places. I got a gift card for my 50th birthday and saved it for the holiday stroll. We booked a table outside and were so excited! Until we got there. The hostess informed us the two tables outside were unavailable; no reason just a no. then a table on the patio was for 4 and we were only 2 so we couldn't sit there. So they sat us in a spot where I got shoved every time someone walked by. I moved to the side of the table and the manager threw shade at me warning I'd be bumping up against whoever was at the table next to me. There was no one. It was a non issue. So I tried to ask about switching several times nicely until I got a little frustrated; and then the manager; the server and the hostess all decided they didn't like me and gave me huge attitude. I asked for a straw for my drink and by the time it came my drink was done. The waiter called me mean for making a comment about it. Then the piece de resistance- they sat 2 people at that 4-top on the patio we asked for. It was by far the most unprofessionally handled evening. Clearly something was going on b/c everyone who worked there was on edge and so incredibly rude. Won't be going back. Such a shame. read more

Simply put, I like this place. I came here for brunch, since they're open at 10AM on the weekends. The decor is modern. Seating wise, they have a few booths, which are perfect. The owner, manager, and staff were all friendly and kept my coffee cup full the entire time I was dining. The food was both visually appetizing and tasted good. Truly some of the most mediocre food around. Went with the family, here's the rundown: Calamari: Deplorable pus to bread ratio. Bland, mostly eating fried nothingness. Garlic Shrimp: Dece, but small and way overcooked Tortilla Espanola: Probably the second best thing we had, but mostly by default Ragu: Oxtail actually very very good! But the rest was such garbage. The pasta was basically stale overfried penne, kale was not an enhancer. I understand the pasta piece is traditional, but traditions can very often suck and not be worth it. Paella: Fine. This is a great new addition to the Hollywood Riviera. This is a very well-designed new restaurant. It has a bar area as well as booths, tables, and an outdoor seating area. But, the main reason to go to any restaurant is the food. The food here is very good. They put their own unique take on some traditional and nontraditional dishes, in each case making them very good. Overall, the presentation of the food here is very good. The staff is very concerned about the customers. They are frequently coming to your table to make sure everything is going good. The prices are reasonable. And, they have a very nice selection of drinks; both alcohol-based or not. For those of you who may not know, they open early on Saturday and Sunday, and though I probably shouldn't give this away, it's a great place to grab a unique Sunday brunch. Gabi James now resides where Zazou Restaurant formerly was in business. I'm informed the same family owns the new restaurant. Some menu items were similar to the former restaurant but most are new. I have to say, from a personal perspective, some of the menu items now offered can be very spicy. I like spicy food, but I had tears running down my face when I ate the shishito peppers appetizer and the fideos with clams main course. The "clams" in the main course were so tiny I had to do a double-take to convince myself the shells weren't empty. Had I known the level of spice I would have asked for "mild please." There was no menu advisory concerning "really spicy." Otherwise the service was incredibly friendly and timely. The hostess at the door was amazing. Take out the heavy spice and I would give Gabi James 5 stars. The menu offers a large variety of meal choices and I hope to return. Next time I'll know what to tell the waitress when I order. My suggestion, which is my lesson learned, is to ask questions about seasoning when ordering an item you haven't tried before. read more

Had dinner at Gabi James this past week and here are my thoughts: Ambiance is great. The restaurant was busy and had a great energy at 6:30pm on a Wednesday. Service is friendly and food came out relatively quickly. Food was just okay for me. We ordered a variety of things including the oxtail, steak, shrimp, bread, and salad. The highlight was definitely the shrimp but the rest was nothing remarkable. Prices are very high, especially considering the small portion sizes. Overall it's unlikely I'll return but I seem to be in the minority here! read more

Had been very hesitant to try this place given the mixed reviews. However, my friend said she had a good experience there for brunch, so we gave it a shot last night. We were so pleasantly surprised! All the food we had was excellent we had the croquettes, the eggplant fries, citrus salad, turkey, meatballs, and bread with fig and it was all delicious.
