Had been very hesitant to try this place given the mixed reviews. However, my friend said she had a good experience there for brunch, so we gave it a shot last night. We were so pleasantly surprised! All the food we had was excellent we had the croquettes, the eggplant fries, citrus salad, turkey, meatballs, and bread with fig and it was all delicious. I keep telling people that this is my new (new to me, but not so new) favorite restaurant so I guess I should write a review. You're welcome. Frankly, I don't know what I like better about this place, the amazing cocktails or the food. Fortunately, we live in a world of instant gratification and indulging so we are allowed both with little consequence. History Lesson: This isn't a new joint, just a revamped Zazou, which was great and has been around forever. I'm glad these guys continue to pass the test of time with top grades. But with the world ending, I'd suggest you order out immediately to ensure they continue to stick around. After three visits in a month, two of which were within a week (!!), I'd like to share with you WHAT YOU MUST ORDER but I'm shy, so I'll just suggest them. WAIT. You probably don't even need to read anything other than this: THEY HAVE JELLO SHOTS. I mean, come on! No, in a good way. I'm 47 years (ahem) young and like my millenial friends (and my friends 2 decades ago? I can't do math anymore so it could have been longer but I've had too many jello shots in my days so forgive me), I love jello shots. These guys have 'em and they're good. We came here for a family brunch to celebrate my niece's birthday. I reserved on open table and told them about the special occasion. It didn't seem to make a difference because nothing happened. I think the manager said happy birthday to her but that was it... We ordered the French toast, the Spanish sandwich, grilled cheese, papas verdes and morning yogurt. I think everything was good but nothing life changing except, the French toast. That is worth the trip. The service is super slow and not the nicest. They took forever to bring our food. Just look at the bleached wood, faded and feathered turquoise interior with the way cool randomly placed irregular shaped orange globes. Clean lines and as of right now, no lines. Press your forehead against the large kitchen windows and stare at what's cookin' until the line cooks get annoyed or your forehead begins to hurt. The Bar stools are so comfortable you may get sleepy before you get an assist from the mixologist. This is a Spanish themed place (Yelp pegs it as French...ce n'est pas. It ain't.) LA could use a true Spanish spot since Racion hit the clouds. Gabi James is Barcelona-esq. Think Tapas taps out and goes to dinner. Let's call this a restaurant in Barce-dondo. It's kept it's beachy feel as it's just a few blocks from the sand. Now, if only the food was what you get in Barcelona, we'd all be stylin and smilin'. You'll be greeted by the affable staff that's able and by the time you've made camp a mini-basket of house made Potato Chips shows up. Go ahead, ask me twice to eat chips. Chips and my lips are inseparable. Oops, I ate yours. The Vibe: Life's a beachers, regulars and neighbors who ate all the cheese or offer at Baron's 2239 (at least 30 choices per night) twice. The Booze Cruise: Wine to help dine. A fair collection of what's drinking right. Creative Craft Beers on pull. Spirits (yes, of course they have Pappy Van Winkle). Here's hoping your date appreciates you just dropped a car payment on two fingers of name droppin' braggin' rights whiskey. There are a lucky 13 signature cocktails for Chem majors. My My Sherry Amore had Oloroso Sherry, Orange and Pineapple Juices, and a splash of Angostura Bitters. Served tall, it went down like Kool-Aid and had a Gabi James Town kick. The G. J. G 'n T had Gin, La Guita Manzanita (Spanish Sherry), Grapefruit Tonic and a wadded up Cucumber lurking in the glass like a Sow Bug. Did I tell you vegetable matter does not belong in my cocktail. It's salad, a side dish, a Vegans' first choice. Fish it out of the glass and lay it on the plate like a beached Bass. The Food: Hmmm...Much of what is served here is outsourced. Morcilla (Blood Sausage) is from La Espanola (where I get mine and I keep 6 of those in the freezer because you never when someone will pop over and ask for some). These are wonderful but raises the question; If I can buy them easily, do I bother to order them? If I can make paint squiggles with a squirt gun do I really need a Jackson Pollack tantrum on canvas? This Morcilla came off the grill and kept some limp red onions company just like I make it at home (only with better crispy onions) along with a thick slice of olive oil grilled bread. Speaking of, the Bread here is actually from Larder Bakery in LA. Now, outsourcing does not make it bad but it takes the kitchen from cooking to assembly. The Gildas (An Anchovy, and an Olive in a stick) needed to be in a Dirty Martini or a Bloody and not on a plate. Period. Oh well, I ate it anyway and now declare it to be an Anchovy and an Olive on a stick. The Potato Croquettes were creamy inside and crunchy outside like a good Pomme Dauphine should be. (Frozen and bought from...?) These were Tater-Tots that became Tater Grown-ups. They were served with Harissa Aioli. Made from scratch? No matter, these were a good start and a nice follow up to the chips. Caveat: Only order a few things at a time otherwise it's a lumber dump on a construction site as everything shows up at once. Treat it like Sushi. Let's call this place a Spanushi joint, shall we? The Coastal Chickpea Fritter with Shrimp bits in the batter was a large Latke, the size of Andre the Giant's Beret. It had Smoked Paprika in it somewhere, Scallions buried in the pancake and a dainty dollup of Yogurt. It needed a side of Romesco Sauce ($4 for a rounded tablespoon to make an improvement). Over it went. Voila, the dish was elevated to something better. In it's normal format it was merely a large disk unsuitable for the High Holidays but perfectly suitable for a game of Ultimate Frisbee. The Spinach with Chickpeas Two Ways (neat and fried) was what Palak Paneer (the green stuff someone always orders when it's out for Indian) aspires to be. It was lovely. The Fideua was billed as Paella with Crispy Pasta served with little Clams, Squidlettes, and Musselitos and a swipe of Squid Ink. The baby Bucatini pasta was woefully undercooked, not remotely crisp, which rendered this dish a wash despite the nicely done seafood. Home, Gabi James, please. Found this place during quarantine on Insta and wanted to try it. I finally got down there today and it was a good dinner with service to match. Everything on the menu was perfectly seasoned and yummy. To add to this, they have an amazing gin menu, of all things, with craft tonics. I am a gin enthusiast and had no idea they had this before I went in. My favorite dishes were the Jamon Wrapped Local Dates and the Potato Croquettes with Harissa Aioli. Not sure how other people order here, but we shared a lot of small plates and it was perfect. I'll definitely be back. read more

Gabi James you Gem of a place! Look this place is one of the best hidden gems Redondo Beach has to offer. To start their oxtail Ragú is so tender and savory! When combined with the fried pasta it is the perfect combination. Very well seasoned meat and golden brown pasta. The papas verdes are a perfect brunch option th spice from the chorizo and salsa verde with the creaminess of the egg over it to die for!! Now the dessert man I have no complaints on any of the dessert! The bread pudding melts in your mouth and that pear in it provides the right amount of crunch! The churros are so go almost funnel cake like paired with such a great chocolate sauce. The crème Catalan I do not share that is my dish! No words for This dish! Must try all of them! My favorite part of this restaurant is the beer selection it's tons of small breweries and a nice variety of tarts stouts IPA lagers. I had the spiked egg nog recently and it was delicious. I had forgotten that I ordered it so it was a nice surprise when it arrived at our table haha! I haven't tried the specialty drinks but they look good and the golden hour specials are worth getting there early for. I will be there pretty frequently in the upcoming year! read more

Years ago we went to GJ and it was 'meh'. This past year GJ earned the Best of the Southbay recognition in both lunch and dinner categories so we felt we should try it again. We did last night for my birthday. My son raved about the filet steak, so I ordered that. We also had the pork belly, albondagas meatballs and a caesar salad. Results: The meatballs, while dry inside, were a hit. The ancho chili sauce should be patented! The roasted thick bread served with them was terrific. Caesar salad made with baby gems was also top notch. The pork belly while tasty, teamed with blue cheese, was real, real fatty (couldn't eat much to it at all). The steak was a colossal fail. The cut of meat when served was weird, with these wing-like pieces on both sides (why didn't they butcher this a bit... the presentation was terrible). I ordered it 'medium' it was served seared on the outside, but the inside was literally purple/raw! How can a chef miss this? Of course we complained and they put the same steak under the broiler which only burned the pepper corn sauce that I had put on it, making the steak extremely bitter and inedible. They took it back and didn't charge me. My wife felt terrible seeing as this was my birthday dinner, she said to the manager we'd be back. (likely not). GJ is better at small plates - they are NOT a steakhouse (which I knew) but the chef failed on this one, big time. BTW, it is extremely noisy inside this place - they need to invest in some sound deadening baffles and install them on the exposed ceiling beams. read more

In the heart of the hip and trendy Riviera section is an unassuming upscale gem, where the proud chef comes to your table to explain the excellent paella. A fusion of Spanish, French, and Mediterranean entrees, menu is full of good quality dishes-- skirt steak, scallops, sea bass, and a lamb burger. I also like their cocktails including a special section of gin concoctions. Appetizers include tasty dates. We sampled a yummy bread pudding for dessert. Great spot to people watch, too. Absolutely fab all around. Cute atmosphere, great service, excellent food and cocktails. Came on a Tuesday and there was live music on the patio and restaurant was hosting a gin night and giving free a gin cocktail to all customers. We stuck to mainly veg entrees- shishito peppers, pan con tomate, eggplant fries, and potato croquettes. All were delicious, especially the aioli that came with the potato croquettes. We ordered around 7 items on the menu, and only a few were OK. I really wanted to like this place, and generally pretty flexible with my reviews, however, this place I would not feel good recommending to folks. I have been here for bottomless brunch multiple times and always left very tipsy with a full belly. The tuna melt is incredible I dream about it and I don't even like tuna melts. I only ordered it in the first place because the person at the table next to us ordered it and it looked and smelled amazing. I came here for a girl's brunch and I plan to come back! My friends had the bottomless mimosas for $19, which you can mix and match with brut or OJ and grapefruit or orange juice. I had one of the gin and tonic cocktails , The Sun Also Rises, which I loved. They really have an extensive list of guns and tonics, which you can mix and match as you please, or can select from one of their gin and tonic cocktails. This place caught our eye because of Instagram posts of their French toast. It's really good! I'm not usually a sweet brunch person, but I'm glad we ordered it to share. Everything we ordered was amazing! We also had the avocado toast, Ugly Drum pastrami hash, and eggs benedict. The avocado spread on the toast was tasty. The bread in general is really good. The arugula salad is citrusy and fresh. The eggs benedict is pretty much the classic version, but it's still solid. I loved the hash. I tried Ugly Drum's pastrami before at Smorgasburg, so I was excited to find this on the menu! It's salty and smoky, and the perfect texture. I think it was my favorite dish. We came here on a Friday night to celebrate a birthday. The restaurant was packed and very lively. We had a table in the back where the noise level wasn't as bad. Our server recommended some dishes and we narrowed his suggestions down to 6 dishes and shared it (5 people) citrus-quince salad, pan con tomate +manchego, Albondigas Chimayo, Pomegranate Lamb Chops, Braised Chicken and Flank Steak. For dessert we had the Creme Catalan and Chocolate-Cherry Tartuffo cake. We liked the Citrus-Quince salad, Albondigas Chimayo (turkey meatballs), the Pan con Tomate, the braised chicken and flank steak. The lamb chops were ok, tiny portions so not much to share. The service was spot on; our server came back to check on us and refilled our water glasses frequently. He put a candle on our cherry cake for our birthday girl! This was my first visit. Just went down to Riviera village with two kiddos and a pup. I had a couple places in mind to head to. Luckily Gabi James had a spot (i was there at earlyish dinner time for most, if I were an hour later may have not had a table.) They have no problems with pups on the patio. They do have a children's pasta that is not on the menu. It is a bog portion, with a fun shaped triangle tube noodle. The girls also loved the little container of fresh potato chips they bring to the table initially. I got the seasonal Jalapeño pesto pasta... it is very good. Not overpowering in spice so you can taste all the flavors. And the shrimp in the pasta were large... not silly little bebe frozen shrimps that people try and trick you with an added bonus was, with the dog, I was not able to walk my girls to the restroom( this was our first time here, so they didnt know the lay of the land,) and I believe it was the owner, was so sweet and walked them to the restroom. I mean, it felt really like you were at a friends house. Well.... Until I had to pay... cause ya know capitalism and people need to get paid and what not read more

The food here is absolutely amazing. Spanish tapas style, with much of their own unique twists on classic dishes. The location is perfect. Two blocks from the beach on Catalina Ave. (a beautiful downtown drive) w/ gorgeous sunset views and perfect people watching. The craft beer is always rotating with new, fresh brews and breweries available. The cocktails are classic craft cocktails, with well balanced flavors. Some places these days try a bit too much with their cocktail menu, I feel like this place nailed it. The staff has always been so kind to me. And it's always nice to see familiar faces. The one thing I would give them a five star for is their drink called JALAPEÑO BUSINESS at $13.00 a drink. My issue with this place is they charge $4.00 for a extra 2 oz sauce that they tell u is an up charge but never state it's $4.00 extra each. So we paid $8.00 for two 2 oz sauces. I COULD HAVE BOUGHT A DRINK FOR THAT .... (almost.) The worst part is the waitress was the owner.... A 17 year old busser mentioned the up charge.... It's obvious when "the establishment" is too embarrassed to mention the up charge "they" institute yet not brave enough to tell you face to face.... We held a wedding rehearsal dinner for 20+ people in the private dining room upstairs and it was great. There was plenty of room to mingle before dinner and the bar was conveniently set up on the balcony. It was a pleasant but cool night so they had outdoor heaters and could leave the doors open. They had a nice little menu at everyone's place so we would know what was being served. They serve family style and tables could seat 8 people. We started with dates, calamari and the quince salad. For the second course we had pollo romesco, seafood paella and fingerling potatoes. Dessert was creme catalan. Everything was delicious. Everyone had plenty to eat. Never mind these other reviewers who complain that their dog can't eat at the table with them...... and or...... shouldn't even be in public in general. The last year had been a challenge and bringing your pretentious holier than thou attitude to a place that is more than accommodating is insulting to see. It's not a dog park..... it is in fact a restaurant..... you know.... Places that have health codes. The food. Everything I've had is great. I typically opt for the filet with peppercorn sauce. It's quite awesome. Adam loves his beer and does a great job in selecting local breweries to fill his tap lines. Sara does a fantastic job with the wine side as that's her forte. The other cool part is that they are both amazing mixologists. Gin being the backbone of many of their cocktails here, which they have absolutely perfected. I eat here on average weekly. Enjoyed a very nice light dinner last night. It's great that they have so many small, medium and large plate options. We started with their Jalapeño Business cocktail which was outstanding!! No wonder it's their most popular drink. The potato croquettes were delicious and surprisingly plentiful for a "small" dish. The citrus quince salad was a huge hit, another larger portion dish which is perfect to share. The chorizo burger was a hit with my husband. Where do I begin. One of my most favorite restaurants in the South Bay!!! I absolutely love Victor, Bianca, Sara, & Adam! I've been coming here for about 3.5yrs. The food is always consistent. I'm obsessed with the complimentary appetizer chips... way too good. The oxtail Ragu is my go to dish along with the chopped salad and meatball appetizer. Now... my most FAVORITE cocktails! Bugs in the kitchen!! I've been to Gabi James twice. The second time I went, I ordered the Butcher's Board. While waiting and enjoying the appealing decor, I was brought a small, complimentary basket of chips. They were salted and not very crispy. The service was fast enough. The Butcher's Board was tasty; I enjoyed its variety of offerings. However, I wish there was more bread included. At the end of my meal, I requested small plastic ramekins so I could take some leftover cheese cubes and jam home. A waiter brought two ramekins to me, and when I looked inside, I found a dead bug. It looked like a small beetle or a cricket. I told the waiter about the issue, and he brought me new takeout containers. I wish my meal had been comped because of this health and safety problem. Even though the food was flavorful, I'm concerned about the cleanliness of this place and won't be dining here again. I'll explore other Spanish restaurants in LA instead. read more

Excellent service, friendly helpful wait staff. Delicious fresh dishes. Really happy we wandered in today. Ordered a couple of the small plates for an afternoon snack. Potato croquettes with crab and lemon aioli, mixture tunisien, and crudo trio. Everything was a pleasure with the gorgeous Socal sun shining down on us. 10 out of 10. read more
