Gemma is approachable, sophisticated and intimate. They serve classics that are perfectly executed with some slight reimagining. The location is modest and the ambiance is not overdone - you can tell the focus is on food and service. My husband and I went for a birthday dinner but the atmosphere is also great for a friend/professional meetup, medium-sized group dinner, or solo meal at the bar. From the moment we entered, the staff was warmly welcoming and accommodated all our needs. It was hard to decide what to eat because the entire menu looked good. We started off with h the salmon tartar which was great, then ordered a pasta entree that features braised duck, and one of the chops - I don't remember the exact names of either, but both were absolutely delicious and the portioned allowed for leftovers. One of the most dissapointing date nights I have had in Dallas. I heard nothing but wonderful things about Gemma, but after trying their noteworthy dishes, I was left with a lingering question; why do people proclaim this spot as one of the best restaurants in Dallas? The stars were the oysters (could get anywhere, nothing special) and a free appetizer we were given. The Rabbit Pappardelle and the Duck Frites were exteremly underwhelming and the reason this review slumps down to being 2 stars. They were honestly just not good. It's rare that a restaurant really lives up to the hype but LAWD HAVE MERCY this place is amazing. The menu is innovative without being intimidating, and utterly delicious. The atmosphere is charming but not overly precious. Brilliant place for an intimate date night or a dinner with friends. But now lets talk about the service, cuz that's where places usually lose me... but NOT GEMMA. Our lovely server (Emma, what a rockstar) took incredible care of us. She was attentive but never hovered. She was warm and welcoming made great recommendations. But the best part was when a tiny snafu happened with our order (wrong entree was sent out), folks I have never SEEN a staff snap to attention so fast. Replacements were immediately offered. Dishes were comped. Management swooped in with apologies and solutions. I had high hopes for this restaurant knowing it won a James Beard award for hospitality. I'll be honest and felt a bit rushed when they said we had to order everything at one time. We tend to enjoy grazing the appetizer and shareable menu so this was a bit disappointing. It was also uncomfortably cold inside even though I had a jacket. I love Gemma. There is the quick review. Longer review. This place. Always outstanding. I'm welcome at the door and seated quickly. I almost immediately have my choice of water and a nibble. Cocktails come quickly, and they are delicious. I've never had a bad meal. Tonight we shared the tempura rock shrimp and mushroom toast. Those were fantastic. Cleaned the plates, my tagliatelle with shrimp was done to perfection. We shared three desserts. Couldn't beat the crème brûlée. Such a pretty space, the staff is wonderful. Great ambiance, and if you want to impress your date take him/her here. The standout is honestly the complimentary gouda fig scone. Heard really good reviews for this spot, happy to have finally tried it. The interior is not too big, feels cozy, they also have outdoor seating but it lines up along the driveway. When it's busy, it can get noisy. The menu was extensive, they also have lots of daily specials so definitely ask your server. We started with a half dozen oysters: very fresh and tasty. Then we ordered the duck fries, brodetto di pesce & blood orange marg. The fries were excellent, super crispy and flavorful. The duck was seasoned well, but slightly on the fatty side. My group was very disappointed in our first experience at Gemma. Our waiter was rude and inattentive to our table, yet had no problem servicing others in his section. We had to ask the floor manager to track him down several times just to get drinks. The saving grace was their ability to accommodate allergies and the appetizers we ordered were good. Everything else from the filet to the rigatoni was average. My steak was overcooked, which they comped, but left a poor taste in my mouth given the restaurant's reputation. A year ago I wrote that my wife and I had our best dinner ever in Dallas at Gemma. Last weekend we had a meal that was equally as good if not better. It's a beautiful, comfortable bistro, intimate and unpretentious. Our server, Jeremy, was an absolute joy: a former restaurant cook, he knew each dish and its ingredients so well that he was able to add an ingredient or two to make my wife's scallops truly special. Because of her IBS she was unable to have them as listed on the menu, instead had them seared in butter with capers and lemon, green beans as a side. She raved about these scallops, as did I, though I had mine with the chile carrot puree et al. as listed. We split a very nice green leaf lettuce salad. The third member of our party had the Saturday special, a Cajun rubbed ribeye with onion rings, perfectly prepared, nicely sliced in its presentation. She said it was exceptional. We had a very tasty Gigondas Rhone with our meal, then a wonderfully rich chocolate tart for the two of us who could go there, while my wife had some coconut sorbet. Our friend who joined us and lived in Dallas said that when she has touted Gemma to other locals they have said they had heard it was very expensive; we all agreed it is very reasonably priced, perhaps upper moderate, but certainly not what one would consider expensive in a city like Dallas. Honest to god, I've lived in Dallas my whole life and have never been so delightfully surprised by multiple dishes on the menu more than I was at Gemma. We basically tried everything on the menu. It was all fantastic. With a menu that large you are usually searching for the hits. Not here. It's a perfect album. I do however wish they would improve some other pieces of the experience. Because honestly this place could and should be THAT restaurant. - Wine selection and suggested pairings - A stronger POV on how food should be ordered - Wait staff almost comes across as unsure, which made me feel apprehensive in the beginning. Just be super confident in how you're guiding the guests. My husband and I had our anniversary reservations at Gemma. I was really looking forward to having a great meal and experience. Especially after seeing all the pics and being a Michelin 5 Star restaurant. Sadly that wasn't our experience. Upon sitting down the man who sat us said we wanted to find you a more intimate spot but the table we had is squatting. It is pretty packed inside with tables extremely close to each other and it's loud. If I extended my arm I would've hit the person next to me. Our waitress was nice and attentive no problem with her. We ordered the steak frites and Cajun ribeye. It was too rare for us and it had to be sent back to the kitchen. We asked for medium rare plus which we explained how we liked it to the waitress when ordering. Ruined it for us. I lost my appetite while waiting and ended up not finishing our meal. The steak frites had an awesome chimichuri sauce and came with fries. Nothing too special. It was a very nice cut of steak. The bathrooms are so disappointing. I'm one that believes a bathroom tells you about an establishment and this one told me a lot. Just tacky. For a restaurant with 5 star pricing I was highly disappointed. Too loud, too packed, the dish the food was served on was tacky, felt they were trying to get as many people as they can to fit in and the food undercooked. No intimate conversations here. My daughter and I dined at Gemma on a recent Saturday night. The service was very nice, numerous people tended to us. The restaurant appears very casual, but the food was quite elevated. They started us with some of the best scones that I have ever eaten (so I asked for more!) The rabbit rigatoni was superb, we loved it. I had the special of the evening, a pork chop, and it was prepared perfectly, and tasted even better. Our sides, cocktails and dessert were great as well. For starters they do offer valet and have limited parking if you decide not to valet. We made reservations for a Thursday night and I'm glad we did as this is a small establishment. Seats about 50. Loved our time at Gemma! We recently dined here for an intimate b-day celebration just my boyfriend and I! We were greeted warmly by the host staff and presented a sweet birthday card and complementary olives and pecans. The service was spot on and we received so many recommendations regarding food! We ordered the sticky ribs to start (yum!), pappardelle/steak frites for mains and tiramisu for dessert. Beet and endive salad was refreshing and flavorful. Gemma is also the only restaurant where I enjoy eating olives - the fried olives and roasted pecans are wonderful! After the recent Michelin write-up, we were one of the many Dallas folk to decide to visit. Although pretty crowded for a Tuesday night, service was courteous and prompt, and they didn't bat an eye about our group of 8 wanting to eat family style. I had to get the "Moules Frites" which were delicate, tender muscles in a luxurious white wine & créme fraîche sauce. Gemma's was on the list of best places to dine in Dallas so I wanted to give it a try. We were late for our reservation so ended up sitting at the bar area. This gave us the opportunity to mingle with other guests which was fun! The bartender was awesome and very knowledgeable! The drinks were good but the meal itself missed the mark for me. The petite endive pear was interesting, flavor wise I'm not sure it all the ingredients went well with each other. The burrata was good but the beef carpaccio was a little salty. The beef cheek was flavorful but also very salty. The shrimp and lobster was soft and mushy so didn't taste well at all. The almond cake was on the drier side was still good.
