I was lured to this place because of the 4.95 lunch specials. Unfortunately, there was nothing I liked on the menu that was considered a lunch special. No big! I ordered the Mongolian Beef, Pot Stickers and a Dr Pepper. First, lets start off with the drink. They bring you a glass of ice and a can. I assume that if you want refills you have to pay for another can of soda. This is just my assumption since I didn't ask and I wasn't offered another refill. The only refill I got was for my water. If I would have know refills were limited for the soda, I would have saved myself the overcharge for the can of soda and just drank water. I asked the waitress if it was possible to get no vegetables for my mongolian beef. I've made this request at other Chinese places without a problem. She kind of beat around the bush and said that it didn't really come with a lot of vegetables. Just a couple of onions and peppers. Alright, I could tolerate picking those out! The pot stickers were supposed to be an appetizer but came out nearly the same time the course did. They were pretty delicious though! Probably some of the best pot stickers I've ever tasted, so props for that! My food was an extreme disappointment though. It was a heaping mound of onions and peppers. I dug around with my fork, asking myself that annoying tag-line, "Where is the beef?" I think there were maybe 10 small pieces of beef in the entree. The rest was just vegetables. The food was alright, but my boyfriend & I were very disappointed with the crab meat puffs. It is always our favorite thing to order at Chinese restaurants, but they were almost completely empty on the inside. The sweet & sour chicken was delicious, though. I love when the breading is crunchy, & it was fantastic. The rice & chow mein were alright. Definitely not the best Chinese I've had in Chico. I only ordered 1 item for take out (mu shu chicken). The order was ready when I arrived, which was great. The main part of the review is the food. The chicken portion was relatively good, a bit watery, but overall decent. The bad part was, that the rolls that you wrap the chicken in, were kind of hard. Many places I have been always serve very fresh and soft ones. The last disappointing part of my food was that normally mu shu chicken is served with plum sauce, which it said it came with. I got home, and they had given me soy sauce. Which really sucks when you were looking forward to something that tastes completely different and has a thicker texture. Overall, I think it is pretty decent Chinese food for Chico. I would give it another shot. read more

I love Chinese food. I have eaten a lot of it. Ginger's is the best Chinese food for the price above Sacramento. If you come to Ginger's expecting 4-star meals, you will be disappointed. If you come in expecting really good sub-$10 meals, you will love it! Note: You cannot judge a Chinese place by it's Sweet and Sour chicken/pork. It's candied meat. Try getting something with complexity and depth then write a review on it. My favorite (and usual) is the General Chicken, fried rice and Chow Mien combo with Hot and Sour soup (I also swap the fried Prawn for a crab cream cheese puff). It costs around $8 or so and is enough to take leftovers home for a full lunch the next day. For the combo's, I would also recommend the Chicken with vegetables, Cashew Chicken as well as the Kung Pao Chicken. I also tend to get the Mu Shu Pork. With or without the "pancakes", it is just awesome! The service is top notch as well. One of the waiters there, his name is Tim but I call him Timothy, is outstanding. He is very friendly, very attentive and always makes sure everything is perfect. He knows us by name and takes the time to come over and make conversation while making sure his other tables are taken care of. He is a hard worker. It wouldn't be Ginger's without him. Ann, who I believe is the owner, is always there. She is a great waiter as well and is right there when you need something. She too knows us and what we order. She has a beautiful smile and great personality. As for the decor, it could use a bit of a make-over. It looks a bit dated, but that does not affect the taste of the food. No matter what you get here, you will be happy with it. If you go there for the first time and something is off with your order, give them another chance a week or two later. It will be a lot better. Tradition to have lunch here with my son. Up til today we have always had decent food and a pleasant experience. After today, however, we will be starting a new lunch tradition SOMEWHERE ELSE. The waitress was beyond rude, hurried us to order drinks, hurried us to order our food, asked if we wanted to go boxes before we had even finished eating, (I literally was putting a bite of food into my mouth when she asked!) and brought the bill before we had half finished. The waitress did not ask if we needed anything else. They were NOT busy, it was about 12:20, and only ONE other table was occupied. Hmmmm, Friday afternoon at peak lunch time...guess that should have told us something... The food today was also mediocre. The fried rice was dry, and the chow mein was so runny it soaked into everything on the plate. The beef in the beef and broccoli was tough. Good news? The broccoli was fresh, and the crab cream cheese wonton was fresh and hot. As I said, we won't be returning. I suggest you spend your money at one of the other Chinese restaurants in Chico. I was there in 13 minutes and found my order waiting for me, this means my food sat there getting cold for probably a whole minute. I'm a VIP and my time is valuable to me. I like Ginger's, but I don't love love love it like a lot of people. The portions are huge and the lunch specials are cheap. The food is decent, definitely the best you will find in Chico (but Chico is not really known for good Chinese). I get the Sesame Chicken lunch. This is a typical Chinese joint with great options to choose from. The inside looks nice and clean, and the service is fast. I am happy that everything isn't drenched in a coat of grease. You don't feel like your heart is going to explode the minute you lay eyes on the chow mein. The fried rice is nice and simple, but with that it's also simple in flavor. All the tofu dishes are yummy and has great portions while the meat dishes tend to be smaller. Overall this is a place that won't disappoint. Ginger's is the best Chinese food I've found in Chico. We enjoyed the Mongolian Beef which had awesome flavor even though the meat could have been of better quality. The hot & sour soup and the general tso chicken was also very good. Great portion sizes and decent prices. The atmosphere was very outdated but overall great friendly service. After going to Peking, China Garden, and Tong Fong Low, I will be returning to Ginger's as my new favorite Chinese restaurant in Chico. This place was great! A friend and I were having a gal's night out and opted for something tasty and close after getting our nails done. Let me break down our experience. The service: Was good, and perfect for what we wanted. We must have walked in the back way (by the fish tanks) because it took a couple minutes for us to find the hostess/waitress. Once seated, she was attentive, but realized that we were pretty low maintenance and didn't hover. Everything came out quickly and hot. The ambiance: It's a Chinese restaurant in Chico, so I didn't have expectations. It was clean, comfortable, and there was music playing in the background. Everything I need/want to enjoy a meal. The food: I ordered the Garlic/Ginger Beef Combination plate. HOLY COW, it was a TON of food...and only cost $10. Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious, and I would have devoured the entire plate if there wasn't so much of it. Being Asian, I expect that "asianny" bold/spicy flavor in Szechuan cuisine. Ginger's Chinese food reminds me of my moms cooking. It takes me back to my childhood times. Comforting! And with a minimum of $20 you can get your food delivered to you. I ordered Mongolian Beef from the a la carte menu, shrimp lobster sauce and chow fun. All were really good. Mongolian beef was spicy and had a lot of red spicy peppers and onions. I'm really picky with my shrimp, if I see a shrimp that is NOT deveined, I won't eat it. I examined my shrimp dish and I was so happy every shrimp was deveined! Unlike some chinese restaurants I won't mention. The food is fantastic! Sincerely. Solid flavors and not too heavy. Then . . . there was last night's experience. I called multiple times when the food was late. Each time I was told it was on the way. The way started to feel very long because each time, it was not on the way. When the food arrived, it was cold, had the wrong soft drink and the order was incomplete. This was a shock because their service, quality of food and delivery had been exceptional in the past. When I called to tell them there was a problem, my name and number was taken. I was told the owner would return my call. That never happened. Super disappointed in this experience.
