Really enjoy the simplicity of this place. The food is really good and its always going to be on point. I really like their stinky tofu and they give a lot for it. Vermicelli soup has a really authentic Taiwanese taste to it and it really just melts as you eat it. The braised pork belly plate is really tender and mixes really well with the rice. Boiled duck plate is also a really good mix, but it depends on whether you like a less saucy taste. Because the menu isn't too large (one piece) I think every item is going to be a good decision here. read more

My parents have always been on the lookout for some good Taiwanese food. It is seemingly harder to find good Taiwanese food in the southern California area. They've eaten here a few times and wanted me to check it out, especially the boiled duck. *Pickled Cucumber* Good stuff. Nice and crunchy and garlicky. *Stinky Tofu* This was a bit disappointing because it wasn't stinky enough and too soft. I'm going to guess that if they were to make them stinkier, they would be violating various American health codes. :) *Che Zhi Noodle Soup* A very simple clean bowl of noodles in soup. This is pretty much what I think of and want to eat whenever I think of Taiwanese food. *Boiled Duck* I love duck. Most of the time, I'm having to eat Peking roasted duck for my duck fix and this was something that I'd much rather eat. It's not greasy or heavy, so you can actually just taste the meat. It tasted really good with baby ginger and pickled vegetables that they called Chinese sauerkraut on the menu. It reminded me of boiled goose meat that we used to get back in Taiwan. Parking is somewhat limited, but I'm sure you can find street parking if the lot is full. That was probably the best Taiwanese food that I've had eaten in a long time without having to go to Taiwan. Hubby and I have traveled to Taiwan in the past. Every now and then, we crave Taiwanese cuisine to take us back to that magical place. Golden Leaf is the real deal. All dishes we've ordered in the numerous times we've visited this resto are on point. Our staple items are the braised beef noodle soup, pork chop plate and the Taiwanese sausage plate. Proof of how much we enjoy the food is that we practically clean out our plates and bowls when eating. The lady owner is also thoughtful in providing a small bowl and plastic (smaller) utensils to make it easier for us to feed our baby girl. As a mom of 2, I am very particular about the cleanliness of an establishment's tables, chairs, dinnerware, etc. I am happy to state that this restaurant makes the grade for an OC mom like me. I did not notice if there is a restroom inside the restaurant. It is not a deal-breaker for me if there is none. Just remember to use the loo before coming so that you won't have to hold it in while waiting or eating. And if I needed to change my babies' diapers, I can do so in our van. I'm not going to knock off a star just because of the restroom or lack thereof. Golden Leaf has plenty of fans. On some days, the wait for a table could be 20 minutes or more but we the patrons don't mind queuing as long as we know that delicious food awaits us. Where to find authentic Taiwanese food? Are you craving Taiwanese turkey rice bowl, simple noodle dishes, or pork chop rice? Golden Leaf is recommended to me by a friend who definitely knows the good stuff. We visited here during pandemic time so they offered takeouts only. This did not deter us from getting authentic Taiwanese food fix. Although their menu is somewhat limited, there are still enough choices that we just wanted to order everything. We ended up having their pork chop, dried noodle, turkey rice bowl, boiled squid appetizer. All of the dishes we ordered were absolute fantastic and authentic Taiwanese flavors. Our favorite dish was their boiled fresh squid appetizer with 5-flavor sauce! As soon as we opened the bag and saw this dish, we were brought back to Taiwan and couldn't believe how well this dish was done. The squid was fresh and simply boiled. All the flavor came from their 5-flavor sauce with fresh ginger. It was absolutely fantastic! We probably will come here again just for this dish. Other dishes such as turkey rice bowl or dried noodle were also very very good. Turkey rice bowl definitely hit the craving of authentic Taiwanese food. Hello My Yelpies, First thing first, if you want super authentic Taiwanese food this is the place to go. I can't believe I didn't discover this place till now. If it wasn't for me getting my haircut next door I would have never known of this hole in the wall. Parking here is pretty convenient, it's located in a plaza so you can pretty much park right in front. Of course, I order the minced pork with rice because how can you have authentic Taiwanese food without minced pork. I was so happy with the quality of the meat. They clearly cut their own pork because you can see the fat still on the meat, which is what makes this dish extra tasteful. I love how they're not stingy with their meat sauce, I've gone to many places before where the rice ratio is 2 times more than the meat sauce. When I took the first bite I felt like I flew back home to Taiwan and was eating exactly what my mum used to make. It definitely brought me back home. I also got the mixture of fermented tofu with veggies. That was also delicious, I love how there's a hint of spicy (I love spicy food) which adds that kick to the tofu. You can tell that they put their heart and soul into cooking their food which is why I'm not surprised that they always have a line outside. I can't wait to go back and try their other dishes. This place hidden gem and is a small mom and pop restaurant. It's probably the most authentic place I've been to so far! Ordered the Oyster Vermicelli ($5.25), Oyster Omelet ($6.50), and the Minced Pork Bowl ($5). The Oyster Vermicelli was average; it was lacking in flavor and the soup was supposed to be a little thicker. Ive been searching for a while for this dish and is probably the only place I've found it at so far. The Minced Pork Bowl was on point. The meat was perfectly marinated ans juicy. The Oyster Omelet was probably the most authentic I've had here in the States. The texture was how it was supposed to be. The green wasn't cooked with the omelet and was put on the bottom but I didn't mind it. My only critique would be the sauce was average, wished it made better because it would've probably been a 10/10 for me. We've been coming here for a long time now and have had almost everything on the menu, and I'll admit many of the dishes bring back memories for me personally. All the rice and noodle dishes I've had were simple and satisfying. The meats were tender and flavorful, but nothing was too overpowering. Flavors were subtle and coming from various ingredients instead of typical Chinese food that gets a lot of flavors from a mixture of sauces. I love this place. In all the years I've been coming here, the food has been consistently homey, clean, and delicious. True comfort food of the Taiwanese variety. They have many of the classics like vermicelli soup with intestines and oysters, minced pork rice, pork chop rice, etc. I will say that the price is a tiny bit higher than some people may be used to paying for Taiwanese comfort cuisine, but I feel that Golden Leaf is worth it. You don't taste any of the gross sweetness Chinese restaurant food tends to have. Flavors are spicy, savory, sour... You name it. Never pointlessly sweet. My only gripe is the parking. Small mom and pop Taiwanese restaurant next to Share Tea. Park in the lot or When we went, there was no wait on a Friday night but there was about a 45 minute wait on Saturday night. If you don't like the smell of stinky tofu, BE WARNED!!! Even if you don't order it, another table most likely will and you'll have to smell it because it is VERY pungent. I like it sometimes but their order of stinky tofu is very generous and I don't think we would be able to finish it. It must be good though, because every other table had an order of it and the room was full of the smell of stinky tofu. You might also leave smelling a little like stinky tofu. We tried to order the garlic cucumbers on two separate occasions but they were always out, so we had to get the A cai or spinach. I recommend the minced pork rice bowl or the braised pork belly. The minced pork rice bowl is on the smaller side and does not come with sides. It is pretty oily, so I tried to drain most of the oil out before I ate it. The braised pork belly is pretty fatty too so I usually take off most of the fat. It comes with bamboo shoots and two daily vegetable sides. If you are opting for a less fatty dish, the pork chop is pretty good and not dry like most places. It also comes with two daily sides. Their beef noodle soup comes a little spicy and they don't ask you how spicy you want it. The noodles are good and most of the beef is really tender. There might be a few chewy pieces though. Got to try the vermicelli soup on a second visit and really liked it. It relies a little too much on garlic for flavor (slightly overpowering) but it's a really great alternative to hopping on a jet and flying to Taipei to get Ay-Chung's. You can add oysters for $3. ** Requisite intro about how I'm Taiwanese and can never find any decent Taiwanese food in LA like the stuff I can find "back home", like OMG what's up with that, yadda yadda, boo hoo, blah blah. ** With that said, Golden Leaf actually serves up some pretty excellent Taiwanese cuisine. In fact, some of the best I've ever had in the states. As soon as I approached the entrance and caught a whiff of that classic stank, I knew I was in for a real treat. This place is run by a husband-and-wife team, and they offer a well-rounded selection of Taiwanese classics. There are the perusual staples, such as braised pork over rice, beef noodle soup, pork chop and sausage, and fried stinky tofu. However, I also noted a few items that are a bit more difficult to find around here, i.e. vermicelli noodle soup with intestine (! - only served at night though) and che zhi noodle soup. Also, boiled duck! Presumably meant to simulate goose meat, something more commonly served on the sweet potato island. As usual, we ordered way too much food. The smashed garlic cucumbers were delicious and exactly what I was looking for. Fried stinky tofu was served with pickled cabbage and the correct chili/garlic dipping sauce. I could have used a bit more stank, but it retained lots of flavor and was reasonably delicious. We also couldn't resist the boiled A菜 (Taiwanese spinach), and the braised pork belly over rice was a surprise winner. The rice plate cost only a cool $7.25 and came with huge chunks of fatty pork belly and a generous helping of 3 vegetable sides. Okay, so the pork was a bit tough in certain places but the flavor was totally on point. Plain noodle soup and che zai rice noodle: Both of which were up to our standards (not too oily or salty while still retaining the taste I expected). Stinky tofu: It was pretty good, but could have been stinkier. With the kimchi, it tastes similar to the ones in Taiwan. Also, the portion was fairly big. Oyster pancake: This oyster pancake was PACKED with goodness: oysters, vegetable, & egg and drizzled with delicious sauce. I like how there was no excess cornstarch (?) and the oysters tasted fairly fresh (no grittiness or dirt) Con (-1 star): Menu was limited, but the owner said it will be expanded. Hopefully soon! What?! I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place!! The restaurant serves authentic homestyle Taiwanese food and everything seems to be on the more healthier side (less oil, less salt, less preserved junk..). So far I've tried: *Stinky tofu: very crispy and authentic! We always ask for a little more sauce since we gobble up so much of it... *Scalded veggies: they have a-choi, spinach, cabbage for you to choose from and are basically either stir fried or quick boiled I believe. *Triangular rice cake aka zong zi: for some reason the rice in theirs is perfectly sticky and salty. I sometimes pair this with their soup and voila..perfect lunch! *Salmon tofu miso soup: so healthy with lots of salmon and tofu chunks! They don't skimp and the flavor is there. LOVE!! *Ginger fish soup: a tad strong on the ginger taste so my kiddo doesn't like it, but they use some type of white fish. Tasty, but my salmon miso is better. *Che zai noodle: small bowl of bland noodles for one person. Its the typical noodle you'll find on the streets of taiwan. Goes perfectly with some simples sides. *Dry noodles: looks tiny but it felt like a lot!!
