I can't believe I've passed this restaurant countless times and have never tried it! Guillermo's is easily one of the best Italian restaurants I've encountered so far. Guillermo's looks like an antique style home with a cozy, lived-in atmosphere that blends in with its surroundings. Which is probably why I never took a second look until a friend recommended it, and I'm so glad she did! The menu has a lot to offer with a variety of options from salads, sandwiches, pizzas and pasta. They even have chips and salsa because Puro San Antonio. I ordered the Jumbo Shrimp Alfredo, husby got the Shrimp Scampi, and my parents shared a custom pizza. All of the dishes we ordered were phenomenal, including the Caesar salads which were devoured too soon to take a picture. The Alfredo sauce was creamy and the shrimp was fresh, clean and delicious in both my entree and my husband's shrimp scampi. The pizza was perfectly cooked and the toppings were flavorful. Guillermo's is conveniently located right down the street from the Tobin Center and is close to other downtown attractions. This place was one of our go-to's whenever we were in San Antonio. The last visit was a bit problematic. Staff was a bit indifferent to pretty much everyone being seated. Drinks too a really long time and refills were non existent even when asked, we weren't the only ones. A couple of other customers and I exchanged annoyed faces at the service while others just shrugged. Ordered our food, Chicken Alfredo, Lasagna, and some artichoke dip as an appetizer. Received our food kinda quick. Still with no refills with the bread from the appetizer drying our mouthes out. Chicken Alfredo was average, not nearly as good as the few other times we had had it. The Lasagna had something spoiled in it. First taste was really good, it was mostly just sauce cheese and some lasagna noodle, the problem came when I really cut into it and started getting some of the meat. It smelled off and tasted really bad. Called the waitress to let her know, she simply picked up the plate without a word. A few minutes later, the manager on duty(I think) came out. He very loudly asked if there was a problem with the food, I explained what I had smelled and tasted, attempting to be discreet. He then began to explain that since I had already cut into the food and eaten some of it, he would not attempt to try or smell it. Fair enough. Then he began to speak in a somewhat condescending tone explaining that what I was tasting was goat cheese. I've had goat cheese. I like goat cheese. That was not goat cheese I was tasting. I didn't argue. I simply nodded. Then he asked if I wanted free food. Don't know if he was trying to shame us for bringing this to his attention, we declined. That's not what we were there for. Then he again loudly said we wouldn't be charged for the lasagna. I'm a bit sad writing this because we always liked the place, maybe just an off night for them. We enjoy dining at Guillermo's, food is always fresh and service excellent as well. However, tonight we decided to call in our order for pick up and that was not the case. For our meal, we decided to go with the pepperoni chicken ranch salads because we had it a while back and it was so good, the serving was hearty, worth the $15.99, but tonight we were disappointed that was not the case. Although everything was tasty, the to-go portion was obviously much smaller than when we dine-in with a small portion of chicken. We came during fiesta with our dog and it took a very long time to order and the seating was difficult because you were supposed to seat yourself and everything seemed unorganized. The staff was very stressed and it took us about 40 minutes to get our food and the worst part was that two plates came at the same time but the other two came 20 minutes later. Also the plates that got there first were a little cold. We spoke with several servers in attempt to get our food and they seemed to be having issues sorting out what needed to be prepared so I wasn't too annoyed or frustrated. However, to make it all worse we never got refills on our drinks because everyone was running around everywhere and we ended up just walking behind the staff station to get our own refills because we couldn't get anyone's attention. I stopped by for lunch today at Guillermo's to try several dishes. The King Guillermo's Nachos I found flavorful and full. There were a lot of ingredients that made for an interesting combination; lettuce, spinach, kale, cheese, beef, pico, sour cream, avocado all over a mountain of chips. It was delicious but I think a simplification of the items on these nachos would be ideal. I next got to try their Italian Sausage Pasta & WOW! Their sauce is delicious and flavorful and really made the dish. The sliced Italian Sausage coated in the sauce made for a wonderful taste and if their pasta is this good, I can only imagine what their Lasagna tastes like!
