My new favorite spot in the South Bay! Not only is their café fare delicious, but the gift shop is sunny and full of unique gifts that are stylish and embrace our coastal culture. I love the "come as you are" vibe Gum Tree has, while other shops are currently lacking that feel in the beach cities. It's upscale and chill at the same time. Gum Tree is a must if you are in Hermosa or Manhattan Beach! Both locations are wonderful, I never walk out of there without a few things at least! I love going for home decor, gifts, and a cup of their tomato soup! The items for sale are well curated and fairly priced, cute and unique. Their coffee book selection and and shell trees around Christmas are a family favorite that we add to our collections every year! The girls are always nice but the owner, Lori, is an absolute doll. They even do a Christmas raffle for a $200 gift card (fingers crossed!), and their wish tree outside during the holidays is such a cute addition. The owner is very involved in the South Bay community and we love that about them. Consider buying small and local and support both Gum Tree locations! The service is excellent, the food is pretty good, the outside patio is dog friendly and the gift shop is adorable. Both the breakfast burrito and the BLT with avocado are solid choices. The fresh squeezed orange juice is delicious and so is their lemonade. We didn't love the pastries but the egg sandwich on a croissant was yummy. The outside patio is great if you can score a table under an umbrella. Just a few blocks up from the beach so it's a bit easier to find a seat. read more

Cute little shop and cafe about two blocks up from the waterfront. The shop sells jewelry, clothing, and other little Knick knacks. The cafe was only okay. I ordered the avocado toast with scrambled eggs, and a cappuccino. They give a good helping of avocado on the toast, but the flavor was lacking. People seated near me got beet salads and that looked quite good! Skip the toast and get something else. Outdoor patio was nice to sit and enjoy my coffee. read more

Arguably the best breakfast in Hermosa Beach. Staff here is so friendly. Avocado toast is no-nonsense delicious (although most often I get the BLT with extra avocado for breakfast instead. Outdoor seating is nice but can get crowded, as expected, on weekends. read more

This place is SUPER cute! Love the decor, the interior, everything. You go inside to order, and they bring out the food for you. I got me their chicken sandwich..and the sucky thing is that they don't really tell you what's inside. Only that it's free range. I got salad on the side. The sandwich was good..but not great. It seemed like it came with goat cheese (which I'm not a huge fan of)..and it was kind of a disappointment. I would come again, but probably order something different. read more

Reminds me of other cafes, so nothing too unique here. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, with pesto, goat cheese, and tomatoes, and was prepared to get the tortilla wrap to make the "healthy choice" but it came on buckwheat bread anyways, so bread me up! The sandwich was really yummy. I chose mixed greens with it, but I should have ordered the dressing on the side because I felt like i was doused in dressing (see my photo). As mentioned in my last review, the last time we were there, we saw a chicken curry pie on the menu that we wanted to try and that's exactly what we did. We went there on a Saturday around noon-ish. It was sunny and gorgeous out. All the windows and doors were open and there was a nice cool ocean breeze running through this place. It was, for lack of a better word, perfection. My boyfriend ordered the chicken curry pie and I ordered the BLT sandwich with chipotle aioli on grilled panini bread. The lunch gods were definitely smiling at us that day because we were basking in pleasure with every bite of food we ate, including the side salads (and the addictive dressing) that came with each meal. We also ordered a ginger lemonade (Holy YUM!) and a cappuccino which was pretty dang tasty too. We ended our lunch with a pecan bar and stared at all the old world maps in frames (in French) that were for sale. What a perfect day. :) read more

The Gum Tree is an organic Australia-inspired cozy little cafe and gift shop housed in a historic 1911 craftsman bungalow. A great lunch/breakfast spot if you are hanging around the Hermosa Pier for the day. You order at the counter and once your food is ready they will bring it to you. Whether you just want a cup of imported coffee, tea or cocoa, or you're in for a hearty, healthy breakfast or Lunch this charming little Aussie beach-inspired nook has something organic and appetizing on the menu for you. The food is tasty and very organic and fresh. I love their quinoa salad and chicken pesto sandwich. I also can't get enough of Avocado toast with egg whites. The outside tables give a great view of the garden and the ocean looking down Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach. Patio area is dog friendly even free treats for the little fur balls. :-) Over all Gum Tree has a relaxing, comfortable environment with fresh, simple food makes it a total hidden gem. read more

I think this is my new favorite spot in Hermosa Beach! I've always admired the design of the building and I appreciate that this business like the former business before it celebrates the building's unique beach house look and has preserved it. Gumtree is a great place to stop in for a beverage and sweet treat or a bite to eat. They have breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, soups and baked goods. I also love that they have Australian goodies like TIM TAMS!!! I love Tim Tams and only get to have them when friends from Australia come to visit. Now, I can get them within walking distance of my house! (or at Landmark theaters ha ha!) I love sitting outside on the patio and watching the action on Pier Avenue and enjoying the Ocean Views. The proprietors are very friendly and make every visitor feel welcome. Everything I've ordered here has been exceptional! I love their scrambled egg, tomato and aged cheddar sandwich that's served on a croissant. I'm also a fan of their chopped salad with it's finely choppedromaine, watercress, turkey, ham, gruyère, tomato, cucumber, bacon, hard boiled egg, but I substitute the 1000 island dressing for the garlic vinagerette. I literally think about this food when I'm at work and wish I worked closer to home so I could lunch here more often! There is also a shop next door where they have housewares, gift items, jewlery. Found this place by way of yelp, while on the hunt for a new breakfast spot near the house. When walking up its cute house that's been converted into a store and cafe. Staff was super friendly! Seating inside and out. The food was simple but good. Perfectly done. The hubby order coffee , ginger lemonade, & and avocado toast with egg and I ordered their pesto with chicken ( I'm not a big breakfast person) and orange juice. Everything was delicious. We will def be back. My only con was it was a little pricey. We paid ab $50 for breakfast inc tip. read more

I wanted to like this place so much and sadly, this is more a reflection of the clientele than the establishment, but it significantly colored our experience here. Monday morning 9am. Sat outside, hoping to enjoy a latte and some conversation. Instead, we were surrounded by some crazy, loud, obnoxious, horrible people. Some woman yelling her entire medical history for everyone on the patio, how she called several doctors demanding antibiotics for her cold. She was also confused by the free parking offered between 11a-2p. (Wtf.) A couple with their 3 kids who were YELLING with their outdoor voices the entire time - no attempt at parenting or teaching consideration of others. And a guy telling his buddy about "falling into his drinking vortex" for the last week. So for ambience/atmosphere, it gets 1 star. For their caramel latte and avocado toast with egg (total $11), 4 stars. Nice staff too. Despite good food and drinks, I don't think I'll subject myself to the type of people who come here. It was a clear demonstration of how Darwinism is not working. OH, and there is NO WIFI. read more

Finally had a chance to eat here with a friend from out of town. Perfect reason to try new places. Especially when said friend was staying only a walkable block away. I've walked by Gum Tree a million times while heading down to the pier, but never had a chance to try it. Caution, there is mad construction taking place on all of Pier Ave. Affects access to some parking and it doesn't make it very pleasant to sit outside. Anyway, lunchtime during the week proved to be an awesome time since we were basically the only ones there for a good hour. Enter left for the cafe, right for the shop. Order at the counter, and they'll bring your food out for you. I had the 1/2 sandwich and soup combo for around $8. My tomato basil soup was super tasty, but not creamy, which is a good thing. My 1/2 indian curry chicken salad was awesome, but could've been bigger. Then again, don't we all wish that. AH had the ahi tuna salad, which she said was really good. We both had a large ginger lemonade, but at some point, AH asked me, "Does your lemonade taste like ginger?" The answer was no. Oh well, at least it was good for about $3, even if it was sans ginger. There are a few seats inside, but we sat out on the patio, which had a couple of umbrellas and even a small kid-sized table for parents with rug rats. I If you can disregard the slow Australian surfer dude serving your food, taking your order, and blocking the menu with his 'fro, this is a great place. Since it's summer soon, I can't wait to flip flop back and try the other stuff next time I'm in Hermosa. Now I just have to see how many different people I can drag there before I start getting diminishing marginal returns. I adore this place for lunch on the weekends. I especially love the salad choices as they are large and full of flavor, and the iced coffee YUM! The Mister likes to get their sandwiches, and I sneak in a few tim-tams! The s'mores muffin is also SUPER yummy if you are s'mores person... its bite sized, maybe a two biter and so worth it. What I like the most about this place is that they keep things simple. For a small cafe space like this - its a must, and the table tops have limited surface area, so choose wisely! I always love to watch the south bay moms and dads stroll through here; grabbing their lattes, and pushing around strollers. It makes me giggle. They gravitate to the front outdoor patio mostly so their kids can run a muck. Oh! Don't forget to check out the cute boutique next door. I finally checked this place out after living nearby for years. Why did I wait so long!? I came with a large group. We found seating immediately in the small outdoor patio, but it was during non peak hours. If you're planning on getting food here at the breakfast or lunch hour, you may want to take your food to go and enjoy it at the beach instead. Like the seating area, the menu is small and straightforward. But not in a bad way. This place makes simple sandwiches and salads with just enough of a twist to make them stand out from other nearby eateries. They do what they do very well. I enjoyed the chicken breast sandwich. My lady enjoyed the BLT. Both were fantastic, as was the accompanying salad (you can substitute for fruit). I've also heard the breakfast here is outstanding, but have yet to experience it firsthand (soon though!). All in all, it's a very nice place to grab a quick bite to eat. This place is super cute. It's in a great location, has ample patio seating, and I love that it's a house that's half gift shop and half cafe. I got the curry chicken pie and ginger lemonade. The meat pie was pretty small, and while it was pretty tasty (the curry flavor is more subtle than you would expect), I was still hungry after. The ginger lemonade could have been a tad more gingery. The shop is a little pricey but fun to browse, and there's plenty of unique things that I either wish I could have gotten for myself or for someone else. You can shop online too! read more

Gum Tree is a cute cafe/gift store few blocks up from the beach. Half the store is filled with cute trinkets, cards and jewelry; the other half is a cafe. The cafe is very beach house feeling space with a seating area outside in the garden. Super dog friendly spot, there's a water dish and treats for your buddy as well. I tried the scrambled egg with tomato and aged cheddar sandwich which was a bit greasy but fresh and pretty good. Avocado toast was really just avocado and toast, I don't know what I was expecting, and a bite of the vegemite sandwich. If you've never had vegemite, it's an experience on it's own. Although the name suggests it's of some vegetable spread variation and it looks like nutella, it's no where near vegetable or nutella tasting. More like, death. It must be an Australian thing, given this place is an Australian cafe. The coffee here is quite tasty, as I had a latte and carried it with me throughout the day I realized it was really smooth and easy to enjoy. Utensils are self serve along with water on the far side of the patio. Parking is the typical beach insanity so don't expect much. Street parking. This easily is my favorite 'relax with a coffee' spot for weekends by the beach. read more

Cafe: Great food! Plus they have Tim Tams... Where else can you find real Tim Tams! They have them sent from Australia. (If you had the Tim Tams from Thailand they're not the same, these are much better. Similar packaging though) Aside from the yummy Tim Tams, the actual food and their entire menu is great. It's small but a hidden gem in Hermosa. Store: Awesome boutique. I love the jewelry. It's usually not cheap but right on point with what's on trend. There's so many great finds... It's easy to drive passed this place and realize right after when you see the sign behind you that you just passed it. It looks like a beach house converted into a small eatery outside and inside. The interior is small and cozy. Gum Tree has a homey vibe-- almost like a you're eating at a friends house for breakfast or lunch. You get your forks, knives, and spoons separately. I believe they are made from some more environmentally friendly material. The food is pretty good. I ordered a Brie and apricot preserve sandwich with fruit, while my friend ordered a half BLT half butternut squash soup with salad. I'm somewhat of a cheese fanatic so I loved my sandwich. Why hasn't anyone thought of combining those two ingredients before? I tried some of my friends soup, and it was fairly good too; it had that curry spice that butternut squash soup has and was nice and smooth. There are so many more items I want to try! Don't forget to clear your table yourself by putting your dishes and trash by the door. I will be back and bring my dog to sit on the outdoor patio. I'm a Melbourne girl and have lived in LA for 10 months. I had no idea this cafe existed and I like 5 mins down the road. First place that I've been too that does really good coffee and it's Lavazza of course. The avocado on toast or smashed avo as I call it is incredible. Tastes like home. Love this place, it's adorable with great food, drinks and service. My only issue is that 2 times in a row they've got my order wrong. The first time was in person on Mother's Day and they gave me egg whites on my avo toast instead of reg eggs. They were busy so I decided to just take the order and let it slide. This time I ordered online and put in the notes clearly what i wanted. They got the egg right but left the chili flakes off completely!! I even put "lots of chili flakes" in the notes. I was in the area for work and yelped around for a quick lunch spot. Parking is street. It was a small but cozy and cute cafe. It's like a house as you walk up the stairs, the left side is the cafe and the right a small boutique. The inside is pretty small and has a few seats but there is plenty of seats outside. The menu is simple. A few breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, savory pies and beverages. _BLT ($7.50) Chipotle aioli on sourdough (add avocado$1.50). This BLT had tomato which I was not a fan of. You can never go wrong with a BLT. I added avocado as well as egg whites. That made a simple BLT to a great morning sandwich. The bread was nicely toasted. And I like that they mashed the avocado instead of slicing it in chunks. I realize that always makes the avocado slip out or the whole sandwich hard to eat. Good amount of bacon and nicely cooked. I could not taste much of the aioli. I loved the dressing on the side salad. It was a sweet and citrus flavor that has a nice potent mustard flavor to it. I wanted to try their popular avocado toast, but I was pretty hungry and that sounded more of a snack to me. Maybe next time if I'm the area I will give it a try. White you wait for the food, I would recommend checking out the small shop to kill some time. They have some nice jewerly and other great items.. read more

This is my second time to this cafe, hoping for a redemption round. Having lived in Australia for a year I loved their flat whites and could never find any (until Starbucks made them)...so I was super excited to stumble across this Aussie cafe. The flat white, even the second time around was pretty bad. I ordered a soy flat white with 2 shots of espresso. The drink was more milk than coffee flavored and the foam was pitiful. No smooth silky micro foam, but instead large tasteless bubbles. The food on the other hand was tasty, I got a breakfast sandwich. The selection of Aussie fare was comforting and pretty spot on with veggiemite sandwiches, avo toast, and even Tim Tams. So overall I give this place 3 stars, 2 for their flat whites. Maybe their lattes are better but for an Aussie establishment my expectations were higher. If you're looking for a proper flat white, I suggest Two Guns on Sepulveda in Manhattan Beach. Insane to think I've been a South Bay local my entire life and I have only been to Gum Tree once! Called in a to-go order while in a rush to get to Del Mar. I placed two orders of the avocado toast and added scrambled eggs to both. Little did I know, these portions for the avocado toast are MASSIVE and we ended up having to throw a way half of the food on account of not being able to finish it (and I'm not one for wasting food, let me tell ya). It was a little on the pricey side for avocado toast, but you end up getting four big pieces of toast with the right amount of avocado on it so it ended up being totally worth it. If you're not in the mood for a big portion i'd suggest not adding the egg, but I would definitely come back. read more

This place is located on the main drag in Hermosa Beach with lots of shops and small eateries. Free street parking until 10am which makes it perfect for breakfast. Place your order inside and the food is brought to you Carl's Jr style. Dog friendly patio features water bowls and free dog biscuits. As such, pooches and their people seem to love this place. I had a croissant sandwich, which was nothing special. Just egg, tomato and cheese in a croissant seared by panini press. It came with fresh fruit. I loved that they are dog friendly. I love that there is a home goods boutique attached. I loved the open patio seating that looks down on Pier street. This is a great place to start the day or recover after a workout. read more

I hit this place up most mornings for a simple ice coffee. Solid EVERYTIME. The pesto grilled chicken sandwich with goat cheese is my fav. Thing to get. The chicken is fresh and juicy and I love the combo of grilled bread with Pesto. I crave this sandwich almost weekly. I've also gotten their curry meat pies and sausage rolls and I love them both! I am really pleased with the Gum tree the atmosphere is great. My living in Hermosa Beach is since 4/ years And I never went to the gum tree. But since 2 weeks I am every day there. I just like the great neutral colors and respect for the customers. My usual walk was to Java Coffee but the atmosphere is for hard grown people with only Mexican mix ground. I took the gum tree for the best of my heart and my peace of my morning start. After two months of Gumtree I got a talk probably with an employee. She said could I speak to you for a moment. She starts I should not talk to customers even their talked to me. She was only angry that's I try only to do a joke onetime with the tea and ding dong said. I am disappointed that way her inappropriate content and over doing last to the end I am a customer and not an employee. Who can say that to a customer? Anstate just to say she didn't liked it I come between the rush to get my refill. I am a human and I am good to everyone and adult enough 37 years. But I don't want split hair just forget about it.
