We passed by here yesterday while running errands. Our waitress was very nice (thus the only reason for 3 stars, otherwise would be 2). DH had and omelet which he thought was pretty good and he thought the homemade bread was quite tasty. I had a waffle which was very tough and difficult to cut even with a knife! This place is still great! I haven't been here in years and decided to bring my kiddos in for pancakes and egg. We were not disappointed. We were greeted by every person working in the front. The kids wanted to sit at the counter so at the counter we sat and watching them throw down in the back while we waited for our food was a great experience. April was working the counter was sweet and punctual. Our order was taken with ease, food was brought to us with lightning speed and was just as delicious as I remember it. I had the bacon and eggs and the kids pancakes eggs and bacon. Their food was gone almost before I started mine. That's a good sign with my picky eaters. We WILL be back. Cinnamon roll! The review has to start and end here. These sweet treats are famous and it's easy to see why. They are both huge and delicious. I'm not sure why we ordered anything else - splitting a roll between two people should have been enough. The rest of the menu is standard diner fare with the pleasant exception of the home made bread. Service? Absolutely impeccable. The waitstaff are all seasoned pros and most other restaurants could learn a thing or two by watching this team work. read more

This is one of my all time favorite breakfast restaurants in all of Tucson. The food is really good, and the owners are great! I like that they keep the environment like a old diner-style interior. Middle of the road breakfast lunch place. I can think of several of these in town and seriously this one is not special. If you want better food just keep driving down 22nd to the bread and butter cafe. So After dropping off the rabbit at the VW dealership we go get some breakfast, its a monday morning between 8-9AM menus are on the table open it up and thump I get the feeling that the car dealership isnt going to be the worst value for money of the day. I LOVE CHICKEN FRIED STEAK, BUT, for a place that prides its self on no frills simple good home style food $11 is a bit too much for chicken fried steak. I also love french toast and they make their own bread there. however maybe you shouldn't just run the loaf through the slicer machine for the french toast the 3 slice portion was around $5 for just the toast and my 2 slice french toast 2 eggs and 2 pieces of bacon was $7 and an a la carte short stack of 2 pancakes was $4. so how were the overpriced breakfast items, The french toast was nice but too thin and had little flavor. The pancakes were good, but not $4 for 2 cakes good. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and the bacon was cheap bargain basement thin cut swill. I WILL NOT GO BACK, Not because It was horrific but It was over priced for what it is. If I left there tip included at $11 then yeah but $16 you are over the mark. The only reason that I went here is because I have heard for like forty years that this place rocks. I am here to tell you that it doesn't. Home fries suck. Over medium eggs are delivered barely cooked. "Homemade Toast" falls apart into 4 pieces as soon as you pick it up because it is under-toasted and very heavy. No one greets you at the door. You have to wait in a 6 x 10 area and depend on the kindness and honesty of strangers to be seated in a fair manner. I saw a woman seated at the counter who had a huge purse plopped on an empty seat for over 15 minutes. If she'd had the courtesy to place her giant purse somewhere else, I could have eaten 15 minutes sooner. No one even suggested to her that maybe she should move her stinking purse. Unless her purse ordered pancakes. There are about 50 places that are better than Gus Balon's. You'd be better off at Denny's or Waffle House. read more

I came here with my Dad when I was little and I swear the place has not changed which is a great thing. The family has kept the same recipes and high standard of cleanliness. Great homemade food. I had a mushroom swiss burger and the vegetables, cheese and meat were fresh and of high quality. No bun but instead burger was on awesome homemade bread. Fries were excellent--not brown or greasy at all. Service very friendly. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is the furniture and decor are probably the same as when they opened in the 1960's. I don't get it. At best this is bland, everyday breakfast food. The bacon was way over done and the cook must not have known how to baste an egg since they came to me over hard. The potatoes were good, but the rest was immanently forgettable. Apparently people love the cinnamon rolls but I'm not much for a sugar rush early in the morning. I tried the biscuit and gravy and again found it to be boring and bland. Watery iced tea kind of topped off the experience. I asked for the tea without lemon which is normally a waste of breath since most servers go into auto serve mode and stick it on the edge of the glass anyway. This time it came with three huge slices floating in the glass. Sigh... There are better bland overdone breakfasts out there. read more

The couple of times that I have been to Gus Balones haven't been very good. The first time I went my toast was burned. Bad. Like to the point where it was completely black on one side. The black side was facing downwards too, like the cook was hiding it. Then the waitress kind of disappeared until a half an hour later. I asked for a refill on my coffee and never got it. The food was okay though. We went back a second time and my wife's toast was burnt lol. The service was about the same as the last time too. read more

I use to go here once a week when I lived behind Mr. Click's dealership, always fantastic. This was way back in the day when they had tried to stay open for dinner. We stopped in yesterday because there was a huge line at Hungry Fox. I was surprised there was no line... now I know why. This place has really changed. Prices are up, which is fine but portions are not, quality is not. The cinnamon roll is $2.99 and still fantastic. My daughter had a #1, children's menu. Orange juice, 1 slice of bacon, a pancake, and a scrambled egg for $3.50. This is a pretty good deal. Other than that, I don't have anything positive to say. They don't have biscuits and gravy but on Tuesday. Coffee and/tea are included in the cost of your meal but if you'd rather have a soda it's $1.99 upcharge but you aren't told this, the cost is just added to your bill. Two watery eggs, a very small porton of American potatoes, two slices of cold, dry nasty toast, and three slices of bacon for $6.99. Just not the same food (taste) quality as before. My in-laws from Finland wanted a classic American diner for breakfast and Gus Barons did not disappoint. The service was great and it had a feel as if time was stopped at some point in the past. The food was great as well. If I have one area for them to improve then not to cook the bacon too long. All were over cooked and crispy. Everything else was cooked to perfection. There are lots of places in town that serve "home cooked "food, but the difference with Gus Balon's is that their food is not only great but the staff are soooo friendly too. Seems to really enhance the experience even more. I go there to eat and wind up leaving with a whole new outlook for the day. Really makes my day a great one. Oh and for those people whining about "price increases", in case you haven't noticed our economy in it's present state has caused a domino effect in everything that is produced, packaged, and shipped in this country including the whole sale prices for food. There's nothing better sometimes than eggs and toast with lots of butter served by a waitress that calls you 'Hon'. I don't think that you can go wrong with anything on the menu.
