I have been here on two occasions. The first time I went, I would have given 4 stars- the bread was great (so soft) but there was too little meat (Mortadella). Went back, and this time I shared two sandwiches, and they were better than the 1st time I went: Gustosa- Proscuitto with cheese. It was great. Very moist...more meat than last time. Pastrami- had eggplant, tomato...sauces and cheeses...I really liked. Decent amount of meat, I was satisfied. This time the bread was a little harder/crusty...tiny bit more chewy. Not to an extreme degree, just 1st time it was much softer (ie better). Enjoyed both sandwiches, would get either one of those again. read more

Wow this place did not disappoint! It had been on my list for ages but I don't often make it to Walnut Creek, so when I was in town I finally had to try it. Walking in I felt transported to a casual pizzeria or "focacceria" in Rome, with pizza boxes stacked to the ceiling, glass cases displaying various focaccia and pastry options, counter service and clean, efficient decor. Here you can order thick focaccia pizza by the slice, a couple salads or go with their sandwiches served on fresh homemade focaccia. You can make your own or choose one of their mouthwatering options. My husband and I chose to try three of their sandwiches getting the Toscana, Pistacchio and Dante sandwiches. All of them were delicious!! The focaccia is perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. The Toscana had an amazing combination of flavors and textures with creamy burrata cheese, salty prosciutto, crisp arugula, and umami sweet truffle honey. The Pistacchio is a unique flavor combination I've only had in Italy, with somewhat sweet pistacchio cream, creamy stracciatella cheese and salty mortadella. Finally the Dante was also delicious but a little less unusual with prosciutto, tomato, mozerella and pesto. You pretty much make an order at the counter which is full of amazing and delicious things to eat, sandwiches, focaccia with toppings, drinks and deserts. The deserts are beautiful. Then you pay and they bring your food to the table and they help you navigate the interior of the shop. There are amazing pictures of the food and cute signage on the walls. We had salad, to die for. I had a salad with peaches. it doesn't get any better. I love arugula. We shared a Toscana sandwich. Mamma Mia, to die for. We loved everything. It was fresh with the light and fluffy focaccia making it absolutely mouthwatering. It likely needed a bit more bacon to make it fully sing, but the focaccia was the star of the show. I was looking for quick slice so I chose the spicy salami and tomato slicer. I had also gotten a shot of espresso. The pizza slice was 2 square slices and quite big for a single serving. The workers were super nice and explained to us their different types of Focaccia sandwiches and pizza. The small pizza had 4 slices, we were able to take some home and eat them for leftovers the next day. Gusto Mio is a great spot that has the potential to be one of my favorites. The meats, greens, and cheese are fresh and the focaccia is made very well. Their sandwiches hit the spot and it's great that they have meat and vegetarian options. We got the caprese, capocollo, and toscano sandwiches to try. The toscano and capocollo were my favorites, more on that later. The pizza is okay, and I like that the bread gets a bit crispy, but I think the sandwiches are the real winner. The shop can improve on timing. We called in an order just around 1 PM on Sunday and didn't get our order until close to 2 PM. The sandwiches were ready by the 25 mins that was said on the phone, but then had to wait for the pizzas. We ordered the margarita and sausage. They first said 5 more mins for the margarita which turned into closer to 30 minutes - then when that was ready the sausage pizza wasn't. We ended up getting the porchetta pizza instead and they threw in another slice of margarita which was nice. Unfortunately, I think because of the red bell pepper spread, the capocollo sandwich got extremely soggy since it was sitting for 30+ minutes. Fresh, I think it would be my favorite.
