We had a shrimp curry dish that was delicious, as well as the crepe/pancake? with lettuce wrap, very messy to eat but good flavors. I would highly NOT recommend the weird sausage spring rolls - very disappointing, very rubbery and odd sausage flavor. Did mention to several staff and they must know they are because no one seemed surprised. The very strong drinks, beautiful atmosphere and other food definitely made up for them so glad we didn't just stop with that. I've been to Hai Hai before, but this experience made me realize how much I had forgotten just how great it is! This restaurant is extremely popular, so you will most definitely need a reservation, even on a weeknight. They have a small parking lot, but you'll likely need to park on a side street nearby (free parking). We were seated promptly and got some cocktails to start. All of them were super yummy, I'd highly recommend the Sangria cocktail! For food, we got the spring rolls, beef lettuce wraps, and Hanoi sticky rice. The food came out pretty speedy, and I like how they bring the food out as it's ready (rather than waiting for everything at once). All of the foods were super flavorful, and a good portion for the price. I definitely recommend getting a few dishes and splitting so you can try more! As a heads up, they really stick to the 90 min reservation. We lost track of time and had to wrap things up quickly at the end. Luckily they had some room at a standing bar area that we finished our drinks at, and eventually some of the indoor bar area opened up that we finished the night at. We are not from Minneapolis, but this place reminds me of Los Angeles, with its Southeast Asian cuisine. Here's a summary of what we tried here: -pork sausage spring rolls: the crunch of both cucumber and wafer, warmed sauce, salty and sweet was a sensory delicacy. -Balinese chicken thigh: savory, sweet, tender chicken balanced by coconut rice and greens that is all-around comfort in a bowl. It ends all too soon. -Vietnamese crepe: this reminds me of a bahn knot, which is designed to be eaten rolled with fresh herbs and lettuce. This felt more snacky, but equally filling. A lot of hype and buzz behind this addition to Minneapolis and some of it deserving and some of it not so much. It's tough to make Vietnamese food fancy and pricey these days and still attract crowds, as people like us frequent inexpensive Viet restaurants back home, but when it's done right, you definitely want more. Prior to our trip to Minneapolis, we had read quite a bit about Hai Hai being THE restaurant to visit. It was popping up on every "Best of..." list I could pull up, so it's no understatement that expectations were very high when we finally made it to the Northeast. We came by on a recent Friday evening for our 8pm reservation and were seated immediately upon checking in. The first big observation we had was that it was incredibly LOUD inside. The restaurant was pretty big and packed and all of the noise was really bouncing off of the walls. The restaurant had a ton of energy, but maybe a bit too much where it felt like the roof would blow. Service throughout the evening was good to great. Our waiter was very friendly and despite how loud and crazy it was inside, he took the time to greet us and ask if it was our first time there. We told him we had already done our homework from reading about the restaurant online, so he freely let us order without his interference: WATER FERN CAKES - To start, we ordered this dish and we were mixed about it. I kept on seeing pictures of this appetizer of little steamed rice cakes everywhere I looked online, so we couldn't help but order it. The rice cakes came topped with mung beans, ground pork and shallots and although they were tasty, they weren't any surprise to us. Being Chinese, we actually have had variations of these rice cakes before so to us it wasn't anything unique, however to the untrained pallet this would be. It was still good though and a nice way to start the meal. SPRING ROLLS - Basically, on our side of the coast, what we would define as summer rolls. These spring rolls contained a crunchy egg roll skin inside surrounding pork sausage, cucumbers and greens. By itself, it was quite plain-tasting, but when dipped in the Hai Hai Sauce, it was amazingly delicious. The Hai Hai sauce had a crab flavor to it, so when dipped, the spring rolls inherited that same flavor. The crunchiness of the spring roll + sauce was delicious, but without the sauce the spring rolls were quite ordinary. SALT & PEPPERED FRIED TOFU - Probably the least favorite of all of the dishes and not because it wasn't good, but because it was literally just fried tofu with some sauce below it. There was a slight kick to the sauce, but if there was no sauce this entrée would be pretty bland like the spring rolls. HANOI STICKY RICE - Basically, THE dish to get based on reviews of Hai Hai and it was pretty much as advertised. It was a bowl comprised of sticky rice on the bottom topped with ground pork, pork floss, chinese sausage, mung bean, shallots, veggies, cucumbers. Mixed together, it was really good. The ingredients weren't all that complex, but this simple bowl of sticky rice hit the spot. BALINESE CHICKEN THIGH - Another winner. To be fair, I love coconut anything and when there's coconut cream placed onto coconut rice, how can I give it anything other than a stellar review? The grilled chicken that lay on top of the coconut rice was pretty standard, but the coconut cream added so much flavor to the entrée. In addition, there was a piece of crispy chicken skin on top of everything that didn't do a whole lot for us, but we assumed it was more for aesthetic purposes. Everything here was solid, but I can't say we were overly impressed by anything we ordered. This is probably due to the fact that we have frequented many different Viet restaurants over the years, so we feel that we have seen quite a bit of variety in our time. The food was well-made and there were a lot of flavors incorporated into some, with some relying on the sauces that accompanied it though. The lively environment was fantastic, but the noise level can become a bit of a nuisance if you're trying to have a conversation. Word of advice, don't bring a 1st date here, but do bring a ton of friends for a group meal because this is the type of place to order a lot and share. 3.5 stars overall, but closer to 3 then 4. read more

Wandered over here per Nicole L's suggestion and it was a FANTASTIC one. When you walk in -- the fun decor almost leans tiki-like, but not as kitsch-y. The space is incredibly large for a restaurant with a back patio/outdoor seating and all! We weren't too hungry after the state fair, so we went with some small bites and they were DELIGHTFUL. *Tapioca Gnocchi (chewy clear gnocchi, shrimp, pork belly, cha lua, wood ear mushroom, nuoc cha, fried shallot & chili jam) - I've had this at my Vietnamese friends' parties. These are typically larger translucent dumplings wrapped in banana leaf. This interpretation is AMAZING and deserves an order! It maintains the integrity of the original dish without any of the downsides (sometimes the OG version is a bit too soggy for me). The chewy clear gnocchi's addictive QQ texture is like boba. So, if you don't like textures -- suck it up because the flavors are outstanding, haha. *Sugar Cane Shrimp - This one is pretty true to sugarcane shrimp's original form and it was tasty! No complaints. The accoutrements it came with were all really fresh! I also tried the thai tea cocktail, which was not QUITE as I expected but really unique. This is one of the best places that I've tried, I really loved the creativity here and felt they nailed their attempts at creating something somewhat familiar, but a little bit different. Many places call themselves fusion, but they lived up to that description. This is a restaurant where you should go with others to sample each other's food or if you have the appetite go for it! I have to knock these guys down to 4 stars because they're too lazy to take cash. This is done purely for the convenience of the management but is inconsiderate to customers. I always, always, always pay cash and I resent it when I'm forced to pay with a stupid bank card. I'm not interested in fees and making Visa & Mastercard any richer. I guess if you're someone without a card, you're assed out of eating at this place. 2. When you arrive one of the first things they tell you is you have a 90 minute limit on sitting at the bar. Tacky. 3. It took 4 weeks to get reservations to sit at the bar. 4. Parking was a huge pain. This is an old residential neighborhood with lots of driveway entrances, the small lot and surrounding streets are packed. Cross your fingers and hope you don't have to walk far. 5. Minneapolis has re-introduced a stupid face mask mandate - not the fault of Hai Hai. Fortunately, I saw lots of customers and staff totally ignoring this. Still, I don't want to be told to wear a useless face diaper to make me safe while I walk to the bar (and then rub elbows with a stranger that's right next to me). Silly. I'd rather spend my money in a different city without people telling me what I need to do just to eat a meal...don't stay too long, wear a mask walking to the bar, pay the automatic 20% gratuity, don't give them green cash money! We ordered from their website all of the vegan labeled meals, sticky rice, cauliflower bowl and spring rolls. The cauliflower bowl came with rice and coconut sauce, so tasty! A little spicy for my liking but it was easy to pick out the pepper pieces. It also had a side of macerated kale and onions which was crunchy and flavorful. My husband partook in the sticky rice bowl first and commented on how savory and unbelievable the flavors were. Once I got to it I realized why, they gave us the traditional rice bowl with pork, not mock duck. I very clearly ordered the vegan meals which were stated on my order and their website. Extremely disappointed something so easy went so wrong. This place was buzzing on a Tuesday night. Super cute place with a breezy, plant filled interior. I started with the Window Seat slushy. It was very strong and delicious, only one was needed ;) For an app we ordered the spring rolls. They were different than any I've ever had. There was a pork sausage meat stick and a crunchy wonton wrapped in the roll. It was fresh and I liked the Hai Hai sauce "gravy" on the side as a dipping sauce. We also tried the chive cakes and I thought those were really good. The consistency was soft on the inside with some crunch on the exterior. Plus the pea purée was delish. For my main I tried the beef rendang. It was served with coconut rice and greens. It was full of flavor and if you like heat on your food, order this! It had a nice kick. Hai Hai is an acclaimed, fun, trendy Vietnamese spot in Northeast Minneapolis. It's good for a date or a drink with a friend. I wasn't blown away by the food, but it's still a respectable spot and labels all its vegan items. As always, 3 stars is not a bad review in my book. The MOT spirit-free drink ($5.50) is a delicious mix of strawberry, lime and soda. Take a pass on the salt and pepper fried tofu ($7.50), which features chewy tofu floating in a weird creamy sauce. I was expecting something crispier and more savory (with diced bell pepper and onions). The vegan mock duck spring rolls ($8) are tasty and interesting, featuring a crispy log of egg roll skin stuck inside the rice wrapper. It's a cool conceit and the dish comes together. The vegan Vietnamese crepe ($16.50) is the best vegan large plate they have and consists of a crispy crepe filled with peas and mushrooms. Although the staff was great and I liked the ambience, I came here for the food. I was not impressed with the raw sushi chicken. We started out with egg rolls and Brussel sprouts. Both were delicious but way too greasy. As a party of 4, we got 3 Balinese chicken thigh dishes and 1 Balinese cauliflower. The Balinese chicken was raw... as my friend said, I had chicken sushi. I was eating it and thinking how odd it tasted. Later, I realized that it was pink. The staff asked me if I wanted something else in exchange and took the meal off the bill. I have mixed feelings about this place. Since it opened I have heard quite the rave about HAI HAI. Thank goodness our group ate family style so I could make up for the disappointing dish I had, so here is my recap: Apps: 1. Bread pudding: looks good but very salty. The texture and flavor of the bread was decent. I wouldn't recommend it. 2. Taro hash browns: flaky and flavorful. Moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Main Dishes eaten family style: 1. Fried potato hash with pork belly (pictured). 2. Thai fried chicken with bisquit and honey butter and a side of fried egg: I got this because i was told the shrimp crepe I originally wanted is only on the dinner menu. I was very disappointed that all three of us who ordered this dish got what appeared to be the kitchen's decision to fry our chicken in the oldest oil from the bottom of the pan on top of selecting chicken with so much fat that the chicken that there was little meat, not to mention it was way too crispy to the point of burnt looking brown. I tore off so much fat and skin until I finally got to the meat which was not much. It was a mess! (look at the pic, I am not exaggerating). 3. Omelette Bahn Mi- I took a bite and this was very flavorful and the eggs were nice and fluffy. 4. Laska Shrimp and Grits- super wholesome and hearty. 5. Hanoi sticky rice- the sticky rice was done right. I didnt taste all the other stuff that came with it. Drinks: Viet Coffee with requested cream on the side. #3 Mocktail - refreshing and light. Some hits, some misses, but mostly great overall. We came on a double date with friends and ordered a bunch of dishes so we could try a whole variety. My favorite was the entree I ordered and we all agreed I won the menu game with Thai Grilled Tofu. Amazing! Loved the tangy ginger-garlic sauce which was perfect with the cucumber salad and coconut rice. I also really liked the pescatarian fried Brussels sprouts with an awesome green chile paste. The spring rolls were fresh and delicious, and I'm thankful my friends were willing to entertain my request to have them vegan style with mock duck. I'd come back for all three of these items. I personally was not a fan of the water fern cakes which had an overwhelming fish sauce flavor, and I'm still not totally sure what shrimp floss is. I didn't eat the pork ribs adobo, but my friends thought they were great! Same with the Balinese chicken thigh, Asian cajun noodles, and Vietnamese crepe, although my friend did wish she could get them with just shrimp and not pork belly. When you walk in it's VERY jungle feel. Honestly, it's a perfect 1st date spot... more lively than romantic, loud music, great food, but not too pricey. The spring rolls might have been the best I've ever had. They were simple, fresh, and even had a crunch (something fried in there). The main dishes were ok. Crepe is greater than Sticky Rice. Both dishes we ordered required you to 'build it yourself' somehow, whether that being putting the crepe in a lettuce wrap and then dipping into sauces or just mixing together disparate ingredients with the rice. I came back to Hai Hai with a friend recently around 4pm and I can't say that our experience was better than our last one. We got seated at a high top table and when asked if we could switch to a lower table, they sat us out in the sun and said that was the only table available (even though there were 8 other empty tables around at 4pm). When another party arrived and the sun was in their eyes, the staff adjusted the umbrellas for them to block the sun. Not sure why we weren't offered that gesture. We ordered the Pork Ribs Adobo, the Crispy Rice Salad, & the Vietnamese Crepe. We both ordered cocktails as well. The Pork Ribs were on the dry side with no flavor and the Vietnamese Crepe was very oily. The Crispy Rice Salad was decent. The host & our waitress wasn't that great either. On top of that, they don't have happy hour either. I really wanted to love Hai Hai this time around but I can't say that they've done anything great to make me want to come back. Someone described this place to me as "vietnamese" which it certainly is, but don't imagine a pho restaurant (which is what my naiive past self thought was the only kind of vietnamese food). In reality Hai Hai serves up an exciting and diverse menu of various meats, veggies, and flavors ranging from spicy and savory to tropical and bright. If at some asian restaurants you think all the food tastes like the same sauce, Hai Hai is the OPPOSITE of those places! I came to celebrate my birthday here with friends and coworkers and we had a great time because it's a very sharing-friendly menu and a fun space. There's bright decor and lots of plants inside, which I appreciate as a millennial :). Hai Hai knocked the socks off my entire party. We all left full and more satisfied than we could have imagined! The service and atmosphere were also great :) Everything I ate I loved. The only thing I didn't get a picture of that I ate were the ribs, which were some of the best I've ever had. The squid kinlaw was perfectly spicy and sour, the pandan Negroni had the perfect amount of pandan flavor, and I keep thinking back on the racines cake's balance of sweet, tart, and salty. Ummm WHY DID I WAIT THIS LONG TO VISIT?! I had big, big expectations for Hai Hai after hearing so many good things and they lived up to every one! Hai Hai is a gluten free paradise, with the menu having more GF options than not, and very knowledgeable servers. I strongly recommend getting a reservation, because it is always packed. We got a patio seat and enjoyed the first days of MN summer while sipping on our drinks. Speaking of which, if you like a tasty and unique cocktail or mocktail, Hai Hai has a ton of options. I got two of the 3 non-alcoholic drinks and the strawberry hibiscus was my favorite. Perfectly fruity but not too sweet. For food, we got the spring rolls to start. They were good and made fresh to order. The dipping sauce was on point. For our meals, we shared the Vietnamese crepe and beef rendang. WOW. So so good. The Vietnamese crepe is a tasty gluten free crispy savory pastry and wrapped inside are juicy shrimp and pork belly with some rice noodles and sprouts. It's served with fresh herbs and lettuce wraps and a sugar fish sauce that is amazing. I haven't stopped thinking about this dish and plan to go back and have it again soon! The beef rendang is super spicy, but soo good. The beef is cooked perfectly to make it so tender it melts in your mouth and it's served with rice to cool things off. For dessert, we got the Vietnamese coffee pot de creme. It was like a delicious creamy pudding version of a cup of sweet coffee and honestly so good I am mad I had to share with the rest of my table, hah! We did a lot of restaurant tourism during our weeklong trip to Minnesota, and, as I prepare to fly out this morning, I declare Hai Hai the best restaurant in the state! Okay, that's not something I'm qualified to speak on, but it stood out among the many places we tried. Everything from the attentive and extremely accommodating staff (we did 9 checks on an 11 person table where half the table was sharing plates and the other half wasn't) to the cute decor and memorable bathroom to the food which was so delicious and so deliciously gluten free. I came to this restaurant tonight for dinner. I was able to be seated as soon as I walked in and decided to sit at two table. The set up of this place is very unique and allows for multiple parties to be in one area. The menu for this restaurant is very unique and creative. I decided to order a cocktail and I got one called the life aquatic. The cocktail was very refreshing and mezcal forward. As for my appetizer, I decided to go with the spring rolls. When the spring rolls arrive, I was very excited because they look very tasty and the sauce was very tangy. For my main dish, I decided to go with the Balinese chicken thigh. This dish was very unique and very delicious. The chicken was well cooked and the coconut rice was very seasoned. there's a part that comes on top of the chicken which is like a chip, but it's actually chicken skins which I loved. First I'd like to note my review is very biased, because I'm Vietnamese, my group is Vietnamese, and one of them just came back from a month in Vietnam. We heard quite the hype, but tried to be objective... tried. We were the only Asians when we were seated and were explained on how to order/eat our dishes. That rubbed my group the wrong way. Too bad, because the ambiance, service, and food were fine for the area and crowd it brought in. I think this place will continue to thrive and I hope it does, because I want any Asian ran business to thrive. But for me and my friends we're not as impressed with the reinvention of Vietnamese dining. I'd say for any Midwesterner newly exposed Vietnamese cuisine visit Hai Hai. It'll be an enjoying experience for them I'm sure. read more

I really want to love HAI HAI! I've heard such raves about it and I had pretty high expectations. In part that's my bad but I also think even if I came here without ever hearing about it, I would have the same thoughts. I came here with a couple of friends and we were all first timers. We decided to split the Pork Ribs Adobo $8.5 which came with 4 ribs. This came out pretty quickly but I would recommend to pass on this. It's about $2 a rib and although it was tasty, the ribs are pork so there's not a ton of meat on them and did I mention it's $2 per rib??? We each ordered the Hanoi Sticky Rice $12.50 aka the dish that everyone raves over. The portion was a pretty good size and I like that they give you the sauces on the side. But for me and my friends the flavor just kind of fell flat. It's a beautiful bowl but somehow didn't completely deliver in flavor. Aside from the food, the ambiance is super fun and cute. Maybe the most redeeming quality. Also luckily for us we didn't have to wait for a table on a Thursday night. The service was okay and when we got the check we received 2 candies when there were 3 of us. We asked to have one more and our waitress was apologetic which was nice. Hoping to update this review in the future with my experience of other dishes and some cocktails! Until then, HAI HAI is just way too over-hyped in my eyes. read more
