I use to come here all the time w/ my coworkers around 2004-2006, but I think they changed owners a few years back. The food is still good, but the prices went up and the service is a lot slower. It's definitely a place to try out (get the Hanamuru Carpaccio). read more

WORST SERVICE EVER!!! the server was very rude and unprofessional. we had walked in around 9:20pm which was 40 mins before they close, and they rushed us throughout the whole dinner. we had a poki salad which tasted okay but i wish i had the chance to finish before the waitress taking the plate without asking if i was done. we also had the crunchy roll which was good but very poorly cut, there were six pieces but each pieces was a different size. i dont think i would ever go back this place just lack customer service. read more

Just called to try to place an order since we wanted to make sure that they have the items that we want (after reading some yelp reviews of availability issues). Someone picked up the phone, said "hold on" after I stated that I wanted to put an order for pickup, and then he proceeded to set the handset down. After being put "on hold" that way and patiently listening to the restaurant noises for 10 minutes, I gave up and hung up. Decided not to give a restaurant that would bother to pick up the phone, but find it too much of a hassle to actually take an order, our business. Too bad. Went last night for dinner. Had to wait for half hour to be seated, even though their was an empty table. I guess maybe it was reserved? Any how's, we finally got seated and I ordered the combination dinner bento. Chicken teriyaki tempura,sashimi. Chicken was good, but the tempura had me confused. The shrimp was breaded like ebi -fry, but the vegetables were breaded tempura style. I was not a happy camper. The sashimi on the bento was slimy and room temperature. Not good for sashimi. I've been in this restaurant a few times and my experience has been always excellent. There is friendly staff, the place is nicely decorated and clean, food is superb! I usually go for bento box and the quality is great. This is one of the best Japanese in the area, I used to go to Sushi Tomi in Mountain view but lately the food quality dropped so I'm happy I found Hanamaru :) read more

The interior was not impressive (my boyfriend said it was the most depressing sushi place he can remember being in) and we got seated right away at a sushi boat arena with maybe four lonely boats floating on it. I ordered: - a hamachi nigiri, which was of mediocre quality and strangely cut into a perfect rectangle (makes me think it wasn't freshly cut there). In case you don't know, nigiri is the type of sushi with the fish on top of a nugget of rice - california rolls, which were average except my bf bit into a pointy piece of crab shell (at least it proves it was really crab!) - salmon nigiri, which was bland except for one bite which had a hint of non-freshness (not quite rotten, but a strange, hard-to-describe taste). I also ordered spicy scallop rolls, and one bite had the same hint of non-freshness in its taste - dynamite roll, which is the deep fried spicy tuna roll. This one was actually good. We also ordered steam gyoza but 40 minutes into dinner it hadn't arrived and we were full. I asked our waittress to remove it from our bill and she rudely said that it was coming and walked away before I could say another word. Another waitress (or maybe the manager) came over when she saw I was upset and removed it from the menu. So overall, the food was of ok quality and except for the one rude waitress, every one was nice. But I definitely would not go there again read more

My friends and I always dine here. They have changed to new owner and chef. The food and service had gone down quite a bit. I ordered "Crazy Monkey" and it should be Hamachi inside, but it is Tuna instead. It is not like they ran out of Hamachi, because I also ordered Hamachi sashimi. I ordered the two rolls and 1 toro sashimi. the rolls are just ok and toro is not fresh and not tasty at all, even worst than the good quality regular tuna sashimi. What happened to Hanamaru? For many years, this was my "go to" secret sushi place. Our most recent meal was like a bad dream... tea had no taste, soup was cold, no rice with the dinner entre, undercooked tempura shrimp. The sushi was good but not great. The waitresses were well meaning, maybe just not paying attention or didn't care(?). We got ice cream on the house for all the trouble, then found we were billed for the comp ice cream! My hand is tired from all the hand waving it took to get our meal right. Sigh. This is not the same Hanamaru that we used to know and love. read more

This place is ok. We used to go there a lot but it has kind of gone down. The last time we were there, they had run out of the halibut (this has happened every time lately) and the sushi rice was hard. They have a boat, which can be fun, but it has very few things on it, and each is wrapped in cellophane, which is disconcerting. The servers and sushi chefs are nice. read more

I am a die-hard sushi fan..and Hanamaru has been one of the best sushi places I have ever been too. Being a veggie,I knew my Sushi options were limited,but Lo-Behold..Hanamaru by far has the largest veggie sushi options than any other sushi place I have been to!!I had the asparagus roll,avocado roll and cucumber roll with Hot Green Tea. Service was poor. It took me 1.5 hours to get my two rolls while my girlfriend chowed down on her bento box that came out in minutes. Everyone around me was getting served and I had to remind them twice to check my order. Each time just to get one menu item. They didn't comp anything, or apologize and it wasn't that busy. Really the lousiest service I've had in a while. But everyone around me seemed to be getting better service than me. As for the food, it was slightly above average. I'd give it three stars and hesitate to give it more. My experience during service probably effected my perception of the food quality, but I'm pretty big into sushi and I've had great sushi, and terrible. This definitely fell right into the middle for me. It would be a good place to go back to if I felt that the service was worth it. But given that there's a sushi place every few blocks on this town I'm going to try the rest out before I wind up here again. read more

The service is horrendous and the items are overpriced. It seems like they take care of the to go orders rather than the dine in patrons. It took over a hour to get the food when there were only 3 other tables being served. When the food did come out it was stone cold and the wrong orders. Overall, 1 hour 45 minutes for overpriced, mediocre food. The unagi was overly sweet and like I mentioned before, the food came out cold over 1 hour of waiting. They had two waitstaff for 4 tables total and still couldn't get it right. $20 for a bento box. To try to make things right, they gave us ice cream, big deal. $1 (if that) worth of ice cream for a $70 bill for 3 people. The sashimi is of low quality (they didn't even cut it properly, it was chewy with gristle!!!!). This isn't a real sushi restaurant, too americanized. Never coming back again, ever! There are better choices in the area. Btw, look at the other one star ratings for this "restaurant", they are all correct. read more

I love this place, my boyfriend and i just started going here about 3 monthes ago and go once a week if not more. They are so sweet there! My favorite thing is the fire cracker roll! sweet yet hot. and they have sake maritinis and jello shots! it is a smal but fun place to go, i just had my birthday dinner there, family owned and runned. Just came back from having supper at Hanamaru for the first time. It was a very pleasant experience. We sat at the sushi bar and had a few dishes from the boats while they fixed a combo plate of shashimi for us. There were 5 different types of fish (yellow tail, tuna, salmon, red snapper, and I forget the last one). There were 3 good sized pieces of each type of fish. It was good. I'm not an sushi aficinado, maybe eat it 3 times a year, but it tasted fresh and had good texture. We also had the Awsome Hanamaru Roll which was good and a smoked squid and bamboo salad which great. The staff was friendly and the two sushi chefs were really nice. Nice place, I'll be back. read more

The Awesome Hanamaru (deep fried california roll) is pretty good but the shrimp tempura had too much batter and not all the batter was cooked completely. OK sushi place. We've lived around the corner for about 10 years and started coming here with the prior management. It was more authentic then. The new owners are Korean, and they do more Korean-style sushi and dishes. Lots of strange combinations, throwing all sort of fish and sauces. We still come here occasionally since it's so close, but now we tend to go to Nijiya deli down the street for more Japanese-style sushi. read more

The food here is okay; we always order the combination dinner with chicken teriyaki and tempura, the katsune soba, and the lion king roll which are all good. There are plenty of better Japanese restaurants in the area, especially if you're looking for good sushi. But the kid-friendliness and service makes this restaurant one of our regular stops. The sushi boats each have a toy on it which you are allowed to take and entertain your little ones with making it a great once-in-a-while visit for tired parents looking for a good meal with little fuss; our pre-schooler particularly loves pulling the tamago off the boats as they pass by and devouring them. read more
