I was excited to take my friend from out of town to Hancook. The food and reviews seemed wonderful. The 3 of us get there around 8ish on 10/8. Put our name down on the list, 10-15 minute wait which was not a problem. A party of 3 came after us put their name down and were seated before us. Keep in mind we are the only ones waiting to be seated at this point. So we confront the person seating everyone and she said "i am clearing another table for you guys right now" We explained, We don't want another table. We wanted to be seated in the order we came in. So the waiter removes the 3 people sitting down before us. Seats us and the waiter loudly starts to clear the table that was meant for us (clanging pots n plates into her cart for used dishes) immediately seats the other 3 people that came in after us. Then we sit around for the next 10 minutes watching the other table get their order taken. A waitress even comes back multiple times to the other table to perhaps clear up questions about their order. Mean while we are sitting there without water and not even a hello. So we walked out after watching these events unfold and went across the street to Azit. Best decision of the night. Better staff and better environment at azit. I have no problem with waiting for restaurants and being on waiting lists. I have no problem if an order gets mixed up or something is wrong with the order. My problem with people/businesses is when they treat people unfairly. Disappointed in the waitress at this particular location. read more

As our group of 11 adults and 2 children took up the large table in the rear of the restaurant we were made welcome by the accommodating staff. With so many people of course we had to order a feast sampling what must have been most of the menu. The tofu soups were flavorful, the appetizers tasty and the bonchon in constant need of refilling as we gobbled them up. My favorite were the cheesy flavors in the tofu stews, being a fromagaphile myself how have I not had it in my stews before?! Yum! read more

The only reason why I have this place two stars is due to the fact we need to pay for forks and plates to eat cake on. WHO DOES THIS??? WHICH RESTAURANT CHANGES PEOPLE LIKE THAT??? But the only reason I gave it two stars was because they have a great flavor in whatever you are ordering along with a good service. The people are friendly and they seem to be very happy to get orders from you. I think that the best thing was the kimchi fried rice because of the amazing kimchi flavor and the rice was nice and soft. My friend and I stumbled across this restaurant and went as part of the soft opening. Goal was to grab a small bite to eat. Decor/Aesthetics: I really dug the vibe of place with it's wooden tables.There are lots of tables to fill so can feel a bit empty if there isn't a big group. Food/Drink: We ordered the dumplings. Cooked evenly, just slightly crispy so it retains that chew. Paired this with hot sake for a solid combo. Only issue is that the number of items on the menu might be a little overwhelming. Some standout, go-to dish would be helpful to make choices more obvious. Service: MJ was an awesome host and server. This place is amazing. Pleasantly surprised. Have pretty much everything you can imagine for Korean food. We had Youkejang, seafood pancake, bossam. Youkejang was Korean spicy, beef was tender and there were lots of fresh vegetables in it. Seafood Pancake was great with fresh ingredients. I had high hopes for this place. Unfortunately, I'm so disappointed with the overall experience and service. Upon walking in, no one greeted us. The staff was chilling in the back talking. We asked multiple times if we can be seated and no one came up to us. We were simply ignored. Keep in mind that at this time, there was only one other table in the restaurant. There were plenty of open seats. After waiting 10-15 minutes with no one approaching, we were told to seat ourselves. Unfortunately, that was the last straw for me and my family. We decided not to dine in with them. I was excited but could not even try the food. This review is solely for the experience and service only. Two employees working and not a single acknowledgement. We tried the Hancook Hansang (combo) with spicy chicken and it's pretty good. Worth the price. The waitresses were very nice, friendly and had good service. Poor service - or worse, discriminatory against specific kinds of people? After we were seated, we waited for 15 mins for anyone to acknowledge us / bring water. Even then it was after we loudly called a passing server. Then when we asked for the drinks menu, that took another 10 minutes to come. Then no one came to take the drinks order until we had to frantically wave down another server. This repeated any time we wanted something - I almost have a cramp in my arm from all the waving and trying to get servers' attention! Looking around - no one else seemed to be treated like this. People who were seated 20 mins after us got water, banchan and food before us. Food was ok - once we were able to get our hands on it. Nothing outstanding - have had better dolsot and kimchee hotpot. The worst part was when I tried to scrape the dolsot hot stone pot to get at the crispy rice (my fav bit!), the rice was not crisped properly (perhaps the bowl not hot enough?) and came off with blackened pieces from the bowl that tasted horrible (perhaps the bowl was not clean and old food remnants were getting burnt at the bottom / along the sides?) Came for a birthday lunch and I'm so glad we did! Food was delicious, service impeccable, and left with full/happy stomachs. Had 5 people and each ordered our own dishes but naturally shared family style. Surprisingly no one ordered a hot pot but the rice and soups were on pot. My husband and I started coming here since soft opening for all you can eat a year ago. The meat quality is definitely good and price is very reasonable. The staff are very kind, friendly and attentive. It's been a few months since we been here and we walked in to a completely remodeled restaurant. Very very different and nice interior design! The menu is different. We ordered the single serving rice paper wrap with pork belly (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) and the single serving hot pot with brisket! Both very delicious and flavorful. My husband and I went there last Friday and had a delicious dinner. We had the chicken wings with the hot & sweet sauce and the Kimchi Buchimgae (Korean pancake). Both of them were super good. The service was friendly and attentive. Next time we will definitely order the Sabu Shabu kit. Another table ordered it and it looked absolutely fabulous! Hancook was surprisingly a delicious new Korean option in oakland! I came with 4 other friends and we ordered dishes to share including seafood pancake, hot pot, & pork belly. Service was fast and prompt, and the food was delicious!! I liked the hot pot, except I tasted some sand in the broth since it had clams or mussels in it. But the rest of the food was so yummy and the banchan (side dishes) were delicious and we kept refilling them! Highly recommend. read more

This is probably the worst Korean food I have had in 40 years. We ordered bbq bulaogi, spicy pork and chicken. The pork was half way okay with spices and grilling. The chicken was basically two or three thighs with grill marks; no seasoning , no marinade, or spices that we associate with Korean food. Even a touch of soya sauce or go-chu jang would have helped. I did not even recognize bulaogi. It looked like pale browned ground beef with some chopped onions . All these dishes were $40 each for small portions. Avoid this place read more

Service was beyond horrendous. 3 hour for food and never once did the servers come by at the corner with a table of 9 to ask if we were okay. The galbi and pork belly sounded good so we ordered both with kimchi and tofu soup along with all the banchan. All were great as expected. An older lady checked up on us from the back. I felt like she was my Korean mother (although I'm not Korean) checking up to see if I ate everything and if the food was up to my satisfaction. It hit the spot and more.
