Stumbled upon Hancook while browsing for a hot pot place and this place did not disappoint! They have happy hour every day from 5-7pm with half off appetizer and drinks as well when we came in so we made sure to order a kimchi pancake to share. The place was packed for a Monday dinner and though there were only two servers, they gave the best service they could while bouncing from table to table and were always curt and friendly. Be warned: hot pot is prepared for you in the bowl and brought out to you, so if you're looking for traditional Shabu Shabu, look elsewhere. For the price as well as service and speed of food coming out would definitely come back and recommend! Portions are also big so great for sharing! read more

I just got here in Bay area from Nyc on last Thursday and the first thing I ever ate here was your food!. My friend told me your place was one of the best Korean places in town so I tried it and it turned out really good just like I expected but one thing that kinda bothered me was the tofu soup. I don't know if it was actual taste of authentic tofu soup but it was pretty bitter so I was little confused but the rest was pretty good and I really appreciated the service. It was my first time trying the restaurant here and the guy in front really made me feel welcomed. He was very kind, gentle. He kept asking If I needed anything else so I got extra chili sauce for my bibimpop which I definitely needed cuz a cup of sauce wasn't enough. Anyways I think Hancook is one of the most casual delicious Korean places! I'd loved to come and visit here again whenever I come across to Oakland! read more

Think this place actually serves korean food closest to real korean food on the Temescal strip of Korean restaurants. We got a hot pot (with the fried rice made in the stone pot with some of the left over soup seasoning, just like they do in korea), some appetizers (BOMB wings - also the closest thing I've found to Korean friend chicken in Oakland - they nailed the flavor and the crunch), the Yukgaejang (which is traditionally made of beef broth) and Soybean Paste Stew. Everything was prepared very nicely - the soups, in particular, were bursting with flavor. I tasted ox broth/plenty of good beef fat and really nice flavor balances in the Soybean Stew (which also contained fresh clams and mushrooms and lightly cooked beef), and the Yukgaejang. The banchan, although few in variety compared to say, Ohgane, were very tasty and presented nicely (and for a comparable restaurant in Korea the 6-7 variety presentation is just fine). We didn't feel that it's overpriced for Oakland. I guess this place may not be popular with everyone, but for people who are used to food they ate in Korea, it may be the best choice around here. Also, we did get incredible service. The servers were not only attentive but personable, and really treated us like friends. My roommates and I want to go back again ASAP. read more

Stumbled on this place on Yelp because we originally wanted to go to Ohgane's in Alameda but as we got there they wouldn't seat us because you needed to show proof of vax card. In 2 years of the "pandemic" I never felt so discriminated. So in search of the next AYCE KBBQ spot, we found this place and I tell you it did not dissapoint! The table was already set as we had a reservation when we got there. Got seated right away and the Banchan was ready for us to start nibbling on. All the ingredients tasted fresh and then they do not skimp on portions. We enjoyed every minute of our meal. We will be back for all our KBBQ cravings! read more

I am super eager to try all new places, especially if they fall in the realm of my favorite cuisines, so when I saw Hancook open up, I was eager to give it a try. My first attempt was a huge shit show. My party of 4 waited for 30 minutes behind 4 other larger parties with the restaurant nearly empty and no one was seated in that time. Sure, it was the soft opening but I feel like on a Saturday night when you've been open for a few weeks, you should have an idea of what type of staffing you need. After 45 minutes of waiting to no avail, we left for Daol. The second time I came here, the wait was minimal and they were no longer in their soft opening. I was surprised by the sheer amount of options available at Hancook but stuck with my tofu stew because I wanted to gauge it. My dining companion ordered the beef tartare and then we ordered the sausage skewers for an appetizer. Honestly, my favorite part of the dinner was the sausage skewer, and you're paying like $8 for 2 sticks. The rest of the meal was just...sad. It wasn't spicy nor flavorful. My tofu stew was rather watered down, which I wouldn't get at the likes of Daol or Pyeongchang. Everything was just way too sweet. Banchan, too. The banchan was ridiculously sweet with no difference in flavor except for sweet. It was awful. Maybe it's because Hancook is so new or something, but they just didn't get the hang of the Korean food at all. I don't think I'd want to return unless someone else wanted to eat here. There are just better options out there, and one being Bowl'd, and that's saying something. read more

I was looking forward to coming here for a looong time but sadly I was disappointed by my experience. First off, the process of getting seated was really confusing and frustrating. The staff was unwelcoming + uncommunicative when I came in and I ended up waiting outside for probably 45 minutes, super confused about whether or not I was actually in line or not. I tried coming in to ask about the situation a couple times but was brushed off and not paid attention to. Finally I did get seated and was led to the dark outdoor dining area. I got the shabu shabu kit for 2 people and was seriously unimpressed with what I got. They don't give you any sauces for your food and I didn't find the broth flavorful enough, so all of the food ended up tasting plain and bland to me. The ingredients they offered were really basic (bok choy, cabbage, tofu, 2 add-ons, and a meat) and I was most bothered by the fact that the udon noodles I requested came as a frozen block. Although the kit was pretty affordable, I left feeling hungry and ended up picking up a fast-food meal to eat at home. Next time I want shabu shabu, I would definitely rather make it myself at home. read more

Delicious! I adore japchae and theirs is great. It says it's an appetizer which is why I also ordered the kimchi pancake, but the size is actually quite large.
