Hancook offers an affordable AYCE KBBQ and Shabu Shabu menu all day long! They even have an AYCE drink menu! The servers are super friendly and the portions are so generous. Everything tasted great so your whole party will be satisfied. My favorites were the boneless short ribs and Korean fried chicken. Those are a must try!

I have this really bad obsessive personality about food and discovered this spot and Friday and just had to go back on Sunday! The service is really good, even on a Friday night. The staff came and checked on us repeatedly and it was nearly empty when we came around 6pm, but quickly got busier. We still felt all the food came out very timely and did not feel rushed. You can grab veggies and sauces as you want in a self serve bar. I enjoy that there is a good variety of a la carte items like appetizers as well! We loved this experience and want to keep coming back! I am not aware of many other all you can eat hot pot in Oakland so they will keep getting our business! My only complaint or recommendation would maybe be to update the cleaning because there are some parts of the restaurant that don't smell great.

I'm genuinely concerned why this place has such high reviews because I was left disappointed with my family. The bossam pieces were either cut too thick or they were too cooked that it felt like I was chewing on carnitas. They gave like 4 pieces of lettuce for the bossam so we had to ask more. The seafood pancake was so soggy that I wasn't expecting it. Usually you get a crunch. I think they also forgot the dipping sauce to go with it. The galbi jim meat wasn't tender enough like the fall off the bone tenderness. It was tough to chew. The corn cheese lacked mozzarella cheese and kewpie mayo to bring out the flavoring. The snow cheese chicken was the best but we thought it was gonna be a whole fried chicken and not just drums and flats. This is only best when it's hot and fresh so I recommend you finish this at the restaurant! When the bill came, we requested to spilt 3 cards but the server only charged 2 cards and said they don't accept discover. She should've came back and ask if there is another card we can use instead of charging it already. The service was a bit lacking and we came in on a Sunday at 12pm when they opened. Parking was also hard to find as they don't have a parking lot so it's all street parking.

Located in such a cute area! The restaurant itself was surprisingly spacious. I liked how the menu allowed you to do Shabu and "kbbq," but the kbbq were grilled meats they brought out. In all honesty, it was overcooked and hard to chew. Stick with the Shabu! I got the spicy miso / tonkotsu. Perfect combo! The meat quality was GREAT and their goma sauce was yummy. Make sure you throw in garlic and sesame oil in there too! Service was good also and waiters were nice.

This is in a busy part of Oakland so traffic and parking is a little hard, but there's always someone leaving so if you don't mind walking a bit, there are parking around. It's a nice walk with a lot to see. It was pretty empty on a Wednesday night so we were seated right away. There are 3 different QR codes to scan to look at the menu: lunch special, All you can eat, or a la cart. We opted for the a la cart menu this time around. Corncheese: I really enjoyed it. It's cheese. It's corn, you can't go wrong. I love the hint of sweetness you get. It was a small dish. Between 3 of us, we all had about 2 spoonfuls before it was done. Gyoza/potstickers/pan fried dumplings: these were ok. We've had better in other places, they were not as crispy as we had hoped. Texture was more steamed than pan fried. Garlic Bossam: I'm not sure what I was expecting from this dish but to me it was pretty good. It feeds 2-3 people. My friend didn't like it as much as a regular bossam. The garlic was a minced sauce that sat on top but it was sweet and not at all garlicky. We had to ask for cloves of garlic on the side that we thought it came with along with lettuce leaves to eat it with. Budae Stew: we all agreed on getting this and it's also a big dish that serves 2-3. Between the 3 of us, we still had leftovers to take home. It was a delicious soup with ramen noodles, spam, hotdogs and a bunch of tofu, different sorts of mushrooms, onions, and a slice of cheese on top. One of the better Budae's that I've had, it was a really comforting dish on a cold night. I recommend coming here if you like Korean food. They have a lot of options from all their menus and the dishes are good portion sizes. There are plenty to do around the area after or before dinner but be prepared to look for parking on side streets. It gets pretty busy.

This place was a bit of a miss, kind of on the mediocre side. This place is one where we used up the veggies for sure but the corn cheese was a bit sweet like as if they topped it with sugar. The other food we kind of felt like we"d rather leave it than finish it. The banchan was ok enough that we got refills on a few of them too. The one item I really enjoyed that I can't get at many restaurants like this was their noodles that were wide and chewy like sweet potato noodles. Service wasn't really existent, went on a weeknight so maybe that was part of it. It was pretty empty except for 1 or 2 other tables so pretty quiet night, no need for a wait.

We ended up here by accident after the place we had planned on going to was unexpectedly closed. This is a nice place though - they have AYCE shabu and even AYCE bbq for an extra $5. They also have a regular Korean ala carte menu available as well so we ordered from that. Everything sounded amazing but it was just two of us so we stuck to just 3 dishes. Turns out one dish would've probably been enough. We brought nearly everything home for leftovers! Braised beef short ribs - the dish looks gigantic so it seems like it would serve more than two for the $80 price point but it's actually not too big. It does have fish cake and thin rice noodles and rice cakes, as well as some carrots, so thats what makes it look like a lot, but there isn't a ton of actual meat. I thought it was delicious especially with cheese, but I'd actually rather just have AYCE KBBQ for that price. Rose spicy cream ttebokki - I'm so glad I asked about the rose part, I thought it meant it was rose flavored which I don't like. But she said it wasn't - the sauce is creamy and spicy and more like carbonara, yum!! I loved the flavor of the sauce a lot with the creaminess. We got the small size and it was still a LOT for $18. I wish they left the bacon out though and just leave it as an option for an add-on. If I came back I'd get this again and add ramen or udon and dumplings to make it a complete meal. Yukgehjang - this is my first time having this dish in general but flavors were familiar. It was a spicy hot noodle soup with glass noodles (like in japchae) and shredded beef (reminded me of carnitas). It was very yummy but I think I could skip on this next time. Overall great food but I would've just preferred to do the shabu and kbbq and spent way less! I'd get the rose ttekbokki again out of all 3 dishes, otherwise all three together really began to taste the same and we really needed the banchan for a pop of freshness. Service was good but took a while for us to get the check. Then I realized there's actually a call button on the table that they didn't tell us about until they told us it's there if we needed extra boxes haha. At the end of your meal you also get a Yakult drink and I liked that it was semi frozen so it was like a slush.

We came here with the family for Mother's Day and we split the adults and kids into 2 separate tables. The food and sauce bar was really good. I removed 1 star due to service. It was quite slow and we didn't get everything we orders. Possibly because they were busy (considering the occasion- it was Sunday and it was in fact Mother's Day) also, parking was quite shady. I'd probably come back and try them again on a regular weekend to try their a la carte dishes. Overall though food was good. Soup/broth was on the salty side not sure if by design since you're supposed to cook meat and seafood in it but for me it was on the salty side. Other than that, side dishes were delicious!!! A must come back to try again type thing and then final verdict! Lol

This was such a unique and delicious experience. My friend and I did the hot pot for two with prime rib and noodles. Basically they bring out two pots of broth of your choice, and you can also go to the veggie and sauce bar to get everything from salmon balls, dumplings, cabbage, and other assorted veggies and fish items. You put the meats and veggies etc into the pot and ladle them out as they cook. It's a fun activity while eating and the food was delicious. And don't forget to ask for banchaun for some pickled veggies as well!

This is seriously the best shabu place in the East Bay! My cousins and I came across this place on yelp while on a late night Target run. We decided to try it out. The restaurant is located right next to Kansai and is huge inside. There are many tables, good for large parties. Parking can be tricky as its street parking only. We got here at around 10:45pm on a Thursday night and did the AYCE Shabu Shabu. The waitress was super kind and told us that although we wont be able to enjoy the full 2 hour limit, they'll do their best to make up for it.. and they did! We loved it so much, we came back on Saturday with our whole family for our cousin's graduation. I've been here several times now and service is always good and the food is amazing! I also really appreciate the good R&B music they play.. I go to raves, but I don't want to hear the beat drop while I'm trying to eat. The AYCE Shabu Shabu option comes with choice of broth, you can choose 2 but spicy is the best!! They have a variety of meats, seafoods and hot pot proteins. We stick to the ribeye and brisket.. OMG SO GOOD!! the marbling and thin slicing makes for melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. I've been to some shabu places were the meat is thick and tough, it makes your jaw hurt.. not here!! Premium quality meat.. i hope it stays this way!! The veggies that come with the shabu are also very good! I appreciate the different kinds of mushrooms, greens and tofu available. Here's where it differs from other places.. at the end of all the meat, you get a choice of either rice porridge or noodles that they cook with your meaty broth in front of you! So far, I've only tried the rice porridge.. let it cook for a little longer and its just like kimchi fried rice.. SO GOOD but also SO FULL!!! If you have room, get the bingsu! Been here 3 times since it opened. My partner likes it. She's Korean. Good. Her mom (Korean...obviously) was in town from LA so we took her. Her mom is really hard to please since she's been cooking Korean food for over 40 yrs. To our surprise and delight, her umma liked it. Hancook is Korean mother-in-law approved! Really good. The flavors are more subtle than most Korean restaurants in town which appeals to my palate. Taste is subjective so I will not say what is tasty but we really like dining here. The young staff have been really polite and friendly every time so far. It could be that my partner and daughters speak Korean. Koreans do like each other but I don't know for sure this is why our service is really good. We've been to many Korean restaurants in Oakland but this is my favorite. I came with a group of four and we had the all you can eat shabu shabu. You can choose from a variety of beef brisket, shoulder steak, ribeye, tenderloin, pork belly, pork neck, various seafood. And a lot of sides. There's lots of sides are pretty high-quality. Price is expensive, However this is about the price you're going to pay for anywhere in the bay area. I used to consider Hancook the best restaurant in the Berkeley area. Pre-Covid, I had some good dining experiences there. After Covid hit, I've been getting delivery from Hancock quite often, usually ordering the Bossam. While the Bossam is good, every other dish I've ordered during quarantine has been lackluster at best. The beef brisket plate was decent if overpriced. The shabu noodles and beef brisket bowl were both pretty terrible. I consider myself to be a pretty big eater, but I could barely put a dent in either of these dishes simple because I could not stomach the taste any longer. Sorry, Hancook, but I've just had too many bad dishes to keep coming back. read more

The overall service was fine until we asked the for forks and paper plates for a birthday cake that we brought. We had a party of 21 people and they wanted to charge us for forks and plates. They also wanted to charge us $5 with discount just for forks and paper plates. We asked for the manager and they weren't here. Monday lunch. It wasn't busy at all. Service was fine. But the food was very disappointing! Rice seemed old. It was stuck together all mushed. Even my 8 year old said this rice was not good. Galbi had a good flavor except the meat was so fatty there was not much to eat. For $26, there was barely enough to eat for an 8-year old boy after cutting off fat. It's not like I don't understand Galbi meat has some fat, but this particular dish really had too much fat going on. Very disappointing for $26 dish. We also ordered galbitang. Again, this dish should had more meat on the bone. It was basically a bone soup. Just thin meat around the bone. Banchan was okay. So if you want to eat Galbi or Galbitang, look for another restaurant. read more

The staff was nice when I arrived and throughout the course of events. Unfortunately they screwed up my order and when I told them I had 2 orders beef Bulgogi and not pork, the cashier hesitated and questioned if it was my mistake. After I told her I don't eat pork she said she needed to talk to her manager. They told me they will correct the order but when I got home it was pork... very disappointing. Is pork cheaper or something? I am hoping it was an accident although the manager who the cashier asked, handed me the bag. They have the legit Korean food straight from South Korea and yet blend well with the current food trend. I best recommend tofu soup and seafood pancake. They are very generous with the amount of food. Various Korean food that you can never go wrong with. You get more that you pick. read more

Food is very yummy, but service is terrible. I've gone 2 times to give it a second chance just incase it was an off day or something. Nope, it was just bad service. We would have to ask for everything we needed, even water. Our food did not come out all at once, which is awkward when you have food and part of the party doesn't. So by the time all the food is out, someone's food is cold. Food is very tasty, but it would of been a better experience overall if the service was as good as the food. It was definitely lacking. After we were done eating, we had to wait for the check. It took FOREVER. After we got the check, it got messed up somehow during the charging of our cards. So overall it took us 30 minutes to leave after we were done eating. Wish I was exaggerating, but unfortunately, I am not. Maybe I'll go back in a year to see if it's better. read more

I got the pork cutlet, and it was great! It was two very big pieces of pork, breaded and fried. Nice and crispy on the inside, but not overcooked, and the portion was very generous. It had some sort of sauce on it, not sure what it was...seemed like a mix between curry and soy sauce. The sauce was ok, but honestly the pork was flavorful enough that I didn't need it. This was our first time here, and it did not disappoint! We ordered the meat and stew combo, which was the perfect portion size for two people. The galbi was well seasoned and meat quality was good, as well. It went well with the ssam that is provided for a refreshing and filling entree. The kimchi stew came out still boiling in the stone pot, and the flavor was bold. We also ordered the fried chicken appetizer and tried the soy and spicy sauces. Both were well prepared and the sauces were quite good. The fried chicken batter was crispy on the outside and the meat was still hot and fresh. We came incredibly hangry after a long hike out in Marin and came out incredibly full and satisfied. Honestly, not many restaurants can boast food that looks as appetizing when it comes out of the kitchen as it does in the menu. We ordered the Kong Sam and a stone hotpot and a few other things and, albeit on the pricier side, they were all delicious as filling. We almost settled for In n Out tonight, but honestly this holds up well too. I thought this place was pretty decent for what it was. I had their soon tofu which I found to be a little soupy for my taste and not what I've had before. It did taste good so I guess this is how this particular place makes their soon tofu. The banchan selection definitely left something to be desired and some of them just didn't taste right but then again, I'm not a big banchan person so that was okay. Service was mediocre at best as we only had our server bring us banchans, our meal, and then our check. Overall, a decent food establishment that didn't have a huge crowd (which I definitely appreciated). Parking was kind of a pain and we ended up parking in the residential area nearby and walked. read more

This was a wonderful food experience. It was very difficult choosing what to eat- we were looking around at everyone's food and wanted to try it all. We went with the chilli chicken with tofu soup- amazing. The seafood pancake was great. The Japchae was yummy; the japchae and pancake could be meals by themselves. One of the staff explained that each person first pick a broth type, then you can request side dishes or type of meat(different cuts of beef, pork and there is also lamb). For vegetables and seafood, they have a bar area for each and you can pick from the generous selections of fresh seafood and vegetables. I was really impressed with the variety. For seafood, they have whole small octopus, sliced calamari, fish fillets, clams, mussels, whole large prawns, as well as small crab. They also have a condiment bar for you to make you own dipping sauce. Each person get their own pot, and we enjoyed many helpings throughout the evening. Sometimes it may be difficult to flag down a server, but when you do they are friendly and eager to take your order. I think their operation can be improved by having customers scan a bar code and order online as I have experienced in other AYCE places. Everyone in our party enjoyed their own customized hot pot, and we walked away with a very full belly. Will be back again when I have the craving for AYCE hot pot!

It appeared that they served low quality meat and in order to tenderize the meat, they add baking soda and water into the meat then pour a large amount of oil to create a sealing layer. Enoki topping was just ... aight. The nice touch was that they didn't put it in the ramen and served it on the side to preserve its crunchiness because it definitely needed the texture! It was loud, busy, and nothing spectacular about the dining scene here. $55 dollars later (ramen, 2 additional toppings, one box of sake) ... I sadly don't think it was worth it.

Wife and I went for a quick Tuesday lunch and had Jook and Fun. For the Jook, we had Fish Filet Jook with Chinese Doughnut for dipping. It was nice, hot, and not runny with slice of fresh fish, although I prefer my fish skinless. For the Fun, we had Beef and Mushroom Cheong Fun that had smooth beef and shitake mushrooms that you can taste. Gum Kuo is the place to go for fresh, silky, rice wrapped rolls. Iconic for Oakland Cheong Fun. Overall, glad they're still around for quick comfort food. Service is multilingual so no need to worry about ordering. They get DT Oakland office peeps although the office crowd has dwindled post-COVID and the rose of remote work.

I ordered three porridges and the fried dough stick. Used my credit card. Then i waited maybe about 8-10 minutes. I love the hustling nature of the restaurant. It gave me nostalgia to see the uncles chopping poultry, the aunties making rice rolls! The porridge were delicious. Dough sticks were soooooo crispy and I loved dipping it into my porridge.

I first visited when my parents were in town visiting, and we were looking for some authentic korean comfort food. The food was decent, but nothing to call home about and service was lackluster at best. We had the Hancook specialty hotpot with veggied potstickers, but the potstickers in the soup were soggy and falling apart. The galbi tang was however really good, which is the only reason why I'm giving this 2 instead of 1 star. I still decided to visit again, this time with a friend because there aren't many good korean food places near Berkeley that I've discovered. Not this was a truly HORRIBLE experience. We ordered a pot of hot tea and poured out the first cup to discover a FLY, which is really disgusting. Service was also incredibly poor, so it took us approximately 10 minutes to flag down a waiter to replace the pot. He grabbed the pot without even apologizing, which I feel like waiters typically do when something like this happens. I ordered the galbi tang, which I will admit is really really good, but the Hancook specialty was again lackluster and came lukewarm. Everytime we needed something, it took us several minutes to get the attention of a waiter. Will not be coming back again and would not reccomend this place to anyone. read more

I recently dined at Hancook and was blown away by the delicious Korean hotpot experience. From the moment we walked in, the staff were warm and welcoming. The interior was stylish and modern, making it a perfect spot for a date night or special occasion. The menu had a wide variety of options to choose from, and we were thrilled to see that they had a vegetarian hotpot option as well. We decided to go with the mostly pork and beef, and the wagyu and pork belly especially did not disappoint. We chose the spicy and tonkatsu broths, but the spicy broth was my favorite. We also enjoyed the sides that came with the hotpot, including the kimchi and pickled vegetables. The corn cheese was one of the best bites of the year so far. Including appetizers in the AYCE shabu shabu menu is very generous. One thing that really stood out to me was the impeccable service. The waitstaff were attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, and they made sure to refill our broth and check in on us throughout the meal. Overall, Hancook exceeded all of my expectations. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a delicious and authentic Korean hotpot experience. Five stars! read more

Sunday evening, no line and reservations unnecessarily. We were really excited to try Hancook's hot pot based on good reviews. Sadly, we were disappointed. Ordered the AYCE dinners, tried pork belly, brisket, shrimp, clams, muscles, shrimp, octopus and quail eggs. Arrived with spinach, tofu, cabbage and mushrooms. Veggies were fresh but the beef and pork slices were lower quality, pretty tasteless. The octopus became rubbery with the briefest dip and the clams were rancid (I told the waitress who just shrugged.) I wouldn't recommend the "traditional" cooking base (tasteless) but the "spicy base was good- nice flavor, not too spicy.) We asked for 5 more muscles (which were good) but after waiting 10 minutes, just paid and left. At $30PP, the proteins should have been fresher and better tasting. Overall, the shrimp, muscles and quail eggs were good but there are probably better places for hot pot in this price range. read more

I stopped by Hancook Restaurant this past weekend for lunch, and overall, it was a pretty solid experience! I was excited to try their braised beef short ribs and the soft tofu stew, and I have to say, the ribs definitely lived up to the hype. They were incredibly tender and practically melted in my mouth--so good! The soft tofu stew was comforting and packed with flavor, though I wish it had a bit more spice to kick things up a notch. The atmosphere was casual and welcoming, making it a nice spot to enjoy a laid-back meal. The service was friendly, but our food took a little longer to arrive than expected, which was a minor downside. Prices were reasonable for the quality of the food, and I left feeling satisfied. I'll definitely be back to try more of their menu options. If you're in the area and looking for a hearty meal, Hancock is worth checking out! read more

My visit to Hancook left a bad taste. Inside did not seem very clean and pretty much empty on a Saturday night. Service was standoffish and cold, did not feel welcoming. Our server was sitting down most of the service. She came off annoyed, would gruffly drop off items, and would go back to her seat. We ordered the garlic bossam - came with a lot of meat but was tough and chewy. Drenched on top was the garlic sauce - a sweet, low key sour tasting jam? Would not recommend. I'm used to other restaurants providing a number of veggie wrap options with this dish (lettuce, cabbage, perilla leaves) - - - this dish only came with 4 pieces of lettuce. They charge extra for more. We only ate 1/4 of the portion and couldn't continue. Won't be coming back, plenty of better Korean places in the area. read more

Their food is indescribable and it tastes exactly the same as the ones I've had when I was traveling around Korea (perhaps, even more delicious!). One of my friends once had a birthday party and ordered a large amount of particular food that she usually enjoys eating in everyday life and I have to say......... OMG.... Every single piece of Kal Bi Jjim and Gam Ja Tang was exquisite! I think what makes this restaurant special includes friendly and professional servers, a variety of side dishes which are also truly to die for (Well, I personally like all kinds of Korean side dishes but theirs are the most delicious ones ever), not to mention their main dishes. I love this restaurant so much!! I was there with my fiance, and the couple we have known for a while. I tried their chicken wings with soy garlic and sweet spicy flavors, cold noodle soup, BBQ ribs, and soft tofu soup. Basically there chicken wings the best among all and cold noodle soup. well balanced sauce for wings and full of flavors in the soup were impressive. sometimes sauce for wings at Korean restaurants would be too strong and cold noodle soup is extremely hard to make it good for some reason. Foods are good, service was good and the couple that have visited here few times said it has gotten better than the last time, which worked out for me at least. read more

The outdoor seating is SO CUTE and spacious! The chicken wings with the hot and sweet sauce option. Wings are pretty juicy and tender. The Japchae which taste amazing with the bulgogi style sauce and finally the Budae Jjigae which came with its usual sides it also had spam, sausage and several other toppings. It was a bit spicy but no exaggerated but still enjoyable. Everything we ordered can feed four to five people. Big potions too. I ended up taking the leftovers. We were here on a Saturday. I tried the rose tteokbokki, chicken katsu, and individual shabu-shabu, and everything was absolutely delicious! The rose tteokbokki + chicken katsu combo is a must-try--dipping the crispy katsu in the rich, creamy tteokbokki sauce was unreal. Highly recommend! The individual shabu-shabu was also impressive. It came with generous portions and great ingredients, making it an amazing value--better than most malatang places in terms of quality and price. All three dishes I ordered were super affordable and beyond satisfying. On top of that, the service was excellent! Definitely coming back! read more

We came with a party of 10 on a Thursday night. Everyone really enjoyed their food. Would highly recommend the shabu shabu pot for 2 -- extremely filling and has a bonus fried rice at the end! The Japchae was great too. Wait staff were very accommodating and offered extra side dishes throughout our meal. Would prefer metal chopsticks over wooden chopsticks but that's a nitpick. Side dishes were pretty okay as well! There are also a lot of vegetarian options and accommodate to different allergies. Tldr: Great food! Excellent plates to share. They took over one of my old favorites. But can happily say it exceeded my expectations. Service was excellent even with our special requests with two toddlers. The galbi portion was generous and the meat very tender. We also had the seafood pancake that was well regarded by the table. My two favorites though were the soy garlic kfc and the kimchi jigae. Came here for dinner and got the beef hot pot for 2. The serving size was good and the food was well flavored and tasty.
