We usually order Indian food from here or Badmaash downtown and they're actually both comparable when it comes to flavor in my opinion! Service is always fast and they're so friendly. Only things that can be iffy is the spiciness level. Sometimes mild can be a little too spicy and medium not spicy enough but i'm sure it's hard to gauge when you're adding spice to a large dish. You guys, WOW!!! I love this place. I cannot wait to order from here again! Not only was the food good, the portion sizes were good, and the spice level!! I'm a big spicy food person, so I love it when I ask for spicy and it gets delivered. And boy, was it spicy!!! But not uncomfortable, just right. The only thing I would note is you have to order rice separately, it doesn't come with your curry. And I would definitely order one rice per person because they are single serving sizes. This is my new go-to for lunch with my family before Exposition Park museums and Angel City games! We ordered everything mild spice for our elementary aged kids and used the hot sauce for us grown ups. We got the steamed chicken momo, lentil soup, dal, chicken tikka masala, lamb korma and garlic naan. We loved the lentil soup so much we had one more bowl after we finished our meal! I'm lucky to live less than a block away from here because Himalayan House has some awesome Indian food. Try the Chicken Tiki Masala, it's some of the creamiest I've ever had. Next time you come, get some of their other entrees, you won't be disappointed. It doesn't hurt to get some garlic naan in addition to your meal since Himalayan House makes some bomb garlic naan. Do be aware that their food is spicy so if you can't handle spicy, let them know; don't forget to check in for a free lemonade with a hint of ginger in it! Himalayan House isn't the cheapest Indian food you can find but it's definitely one of the better places. All the staff are very friendly but can be a little slow at times so be patient with them or try extra hard to get their attention when you want something. 3.75 stars. I haven't had good experiences picking out Indian/Nepalese food in the past, but Himalayan House defied my expectations with both quantity and quality for the most part. I ordered the Chicken Thali ($14.49) which came with 4 pieces of Naan, a platter of rice, yogurt sauce, a dessert, curried chicken, lentil soup, and some sort of potato curry. The flavors were unique enough that I never got bored. I wasn't really sure how to eat everything so I just kind of mixed everything in with the rice and just chowed down. You can order the Thali with a spice level from 0-10. Since I love spicy, I ordered a 10, and be cautioned: it comes with quite a kick. The potato curry wasn't nearly as flavorful but it still was good with the rice. I particularly loved dipping the Naan in the yogurt sauce. The lentils were just okay. Although the waiter was nice, the service was quite slow. Took a while to get water and for the waiter to notice that we were ready to order despite us being one of the few people there. In the past ten days I've ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Naan, and Chicken Biriyani from three different Indian/Nepali/Deshi restaurants in DTLA. Biriyani Kabob House impressed (four stars), India's Clay Pit fell short (two stars), and Himalayan House, despite their top tier reviews, fell right smack dab in the middle of the pack. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? I ordered my food from Himalayan House via UberEats, so I'll confess that I was unable to experience the service or atmosphere, but I'll note that the delivery and notably the time between when my order was placed and when it was put in the Uber was exceptionally fast. Additionally, everything was packaged nicely and secured. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? My generous portion of Chicken Biriyani was $15.00, which wasn't out of line with what I paid at Biriyani Kabob House. Having said that, $15.00 really is a hard cap for what even a generous portion of Chicken Biriyani should cost. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? So everything was just okay. I enjoyed the Garlic Naan although the portion was small and the quality not nearly as good as Biriyani Kabob House's massive fluffy pieces. The Chicken Tikka Masala had decent flavor but the curry itself was too watery and the chunks of chicken a bit bland. Finally, the Biriyani was good with some diverse flavors, but again it fell short of Biriyani Kabob House in terms of complexity. Single Star. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? This restaurant is located very close to USC in a strip mall, and they offer Indian and Nepali food. What attracted me to this place was that they offered Kothey Momos (partly boiled, then fried). We tried the chicken and vegetarian Kothey Momos and loved them. Wishes they also served spicy sauce with the momos. We also ordered a chicken biryani, a paneer dish and beef chilli, with garlic naan. Also a mango lassi and sweet and salty lassi. Everything tasted good. The prices are reasonable. I don't even like okra. But they have an okra dish that is delish. (And not slime-y, well, not very slime-y). This is a hidden gem. In a small mini mall. Blink, and you'd drive right past it, very nondescript and a little worn. BUT don't let the mini-mall or the neighborhood scare you off. A foodie friend found this place, and introduced us to it. This is a quality dining experience in the shadow of USC -- a hybrid Indian and Himalayan/Chinese cooking ...so quite a few vegetarian and gluten free options. The tables all have white tablecloths and large photos of scenes from Tibet, so it feels a bit upscale, but the prices are reasonable. But it's a casual YAY!!! LOVE the CHOW CHOW veggie appetizer. It's enough to share. It's like spaghetti, but with a twist. So good. There's a meat option too. LOVE the MOMO appetizer. It's like a deep-fried juicy dumpling. Again veggie, but there's a meat option. The SAMOSA, only two, it was fine. LOVED the tamarind sauce it came with. I poured it on everything. My other friends ordered the OKRA. I tried it, very very good! And a chicken dish, my friends enjoyed that. The white rice is Indian, also light and fluffy. Also ordered the SPINACH NAAN, also very good. I want to try the other naan now. They also have THALI and TANDORI...cool. Must try the Thali next time. AND for the adventurous, they serve YAK and GOAT. The service was fine, and checked with us twice. With one water refill. They don't hover, which is great because it's a small restaurant. Large parties can be accommodated, but you probably need a reservation. Free parking lot and street parking, but I suggest the lot or park on Jefferson right in front. The restroom was genderless, but I couldn't open the door without smacking into something (turned out to be a big bucket with mop)...so the bathroom wasn't so pleasant as the front of the house. Until I discovered this gem a few years ago, I was disappointed by the scarcity of Indian food options in the DTLA area. To my surprise, Himalayan House provided exactly what I was looking for and more. An unassuming hole in the wall, it is located in a small shopping complex near USC. What's unique about this place is that it has both Indian and Nepalese food, the latter of which I had not tried before. After sampling a variety of dishes on the menu, I can confidently say that I find their selection quite tasty and affordable! The chow chow is my favorite appetizer- thin chewy noodles covered with a sweet tomato-y sauce. I've also enjoyed their samosas and momos. Their curries are great- I recommend the paneer butter masala and aloo gobi with garlic naan. Spicy food lovers will love this place! Those who are more sensitive (like me), beware. I always have to give a 1/5 or 2/5 rating for my spice level because "mild"= burning for me! Parking is readily available in the lot or on the neighboring streets (but may be full in peak hours). It's located in a neighborhood where you wouldn't expect to find Nepalese/Indian food. I ordered a chicken jalfrezi and shared an order of garlic naan with my friend. The jalfrezi was a bit on the watery side for me, which made it kind of awkward to eat with naan. The naan was a bit plain-tasting, even though it was garlic naan. My friend had a thali, and I had a few bites of the food off her plate, and it seemed those curries were better than what I ordered. Service was great, our waiter was friendly and attentive. The inside of the restaurant is well-kept, but there's a loud air-conditioning unit that was blowing air at me the entire time. In retrospect, I should've asked to be reseated lol. The food and the survive is extravagant. The yogurt sauce in the chicken tikka masala and the curry in Pokhereli chicken was just so flavorful and luscious. We've had Himalayan House for quite sometime now. Our kid loves it. Easy stuff, Tiki Masala, Saag Paneer, Naan...it's one of those places that we can go-to for dinner with him. I have had a lot of Indian food in my life and man this is pretty high up in the ranks. My favorite is there paneer tikka masala. Let me tell you when I say this place makes it spicy if you ask they make it SPICY. I love spicy food and I keep it at a 6/7. Will always keep coming back here. Truly a great hole-in-the-wall find! Pretty small interior so it can be cramped, but it has a nice cozy feel. Staff is super friendly, and the menu has a nice variety. Naan is always a great choice. Paneer was spot-on. The curry was ok but not my favorite. The place was pretty busy during dinner time, and a lot of local college students came in and out to grab takeout. Not sure how I managed to miss this place after going to USC for 4 years - in fact, a friend of mine used to live a block away. Himalayan House wasn't crowded at all at 6pm on a Monday. We were seated immediately and experienced prompt service from the one female server on duty. They had a sign up indicating that they required a minimum $20 spend to use a credit card. We weren't super hungry after a heavy lunch, so we ended up getting the Chicken Makhani and three different types of naan (garlic, onion, and cheese). The chicken wasn't as tender as I would've liked, but it still worked for the dish. The plate was definitely carried by its curry, and we found ourselves fighting over curry access. Out of the three types of naan, my favorite was the garlic as it offered more depth to the already flavorful makhani curry. My friend and I shared the plate of garlic tofu, daal, and this bamboo vegetable curry? Also with a side of roti and of course samosas. Everything tasted awesome- although the garlic tofu was my favorite. They ask for your spice level on a scale of 1-10 and we chose 5 and it felt like a 7 (we're Asian too so we can handle our spice) that being said, be careful haha The rice dessert on the plate tasted like horchata according to my friend (it wasn't vegan) but that sounds good! I'm so disappointed. I was really looking forward to having this meal and being able to get something I wanted and something my husband wanted. We went with the Fish Thali and the Goat Thali and man do I regret it. First, the delivery: I don't know if it's because of the way things were packed or the delivery drivers handling but two of the items were basically destroyed and leaking all over the bag. Also, instead of Goat, I got Lamb. Which isn't what I wanted but I mean mistakes happen, I get it. Next: Mango Lassi was just not that good. I feel like because of the accessibility to authentic foods like this, it isn't enough to be mediocre and that's what this was. Third: The food just wasn't very good. We got mild but this was just... tasteless. Everything. Fourth and worst for me: The rice pudding was ROTTEN. I took one bite and almost threw up, which is not like me. I smelled it but I didn't want to believe it was off... thought maybe it was a spice I wasn't familiar with. No. It was putrid. I'm not even sure why I'm giving even 2-stars... but this was not good.
