Today was the 'Holey Grail' donut restaurant on 2nd Street in Long Beach's grand opening. So, naturally, I'm getting me a donut!! When we arrived, the place was like a party. Lots of people, a great DJ, lots of staff and... some tasty 'made to order' donuts. We ordered a 'Lilikoi' and a 'Girll Swirl', which was a mix of fruit flavors. The donuts were served in a fancy box. We split the donuts and both had a really good flavor. The donuts were good, the menu selections offered a good variety of choices for donuts, coffee and other beverages. This is my second time trying this donut place. When I come in, they have very odd smell. It smells like chemical. So I even asked what oil that they are using. They said organic coconut oil. But It smells really bad and yuckyyyy... I couldn't even stay inside of the place while my donuts were prepared. Two donuts their light and just like a donut shop that we go to at Huntington Beach it's called duck donuts they're not as much as holy Grail is but they're the same concept and they taste just as good Holy Grail very minimal taste in donuts today I had a re-created I believe that's what it was called it was supposed to have salt coconut and all you could taste is the glaze I didn't taste any coconut and the guy that's making them he barely put like three chips of coconut on it so I give that a thumbs down . Overall for that donut 3/10 The other donut that we tried was the saffron donut there is nothing saffron in this donut whatsoever. I go to Italy and I bring the Real stuff home and I guarantee you they barely put a pinch of it in saffron for that one I got 1/10 tasteless. I will stick to our local donut shops here in Belmont Shores because they deserve our business as for this holy Grail we've seen so many restaurants come and go this one does not look like a keeper. I'm very sad that this wasn't a good experience this morning. Just wanted to start off by saying congratulations to how far this company has gone. I met them last year in the form of a food truck at a concert my team and I were vending at. The quality and execution of their donuts is far beyond that of a basic donut shop. I think where most people misunderstand the concept is that they use taro as a base as opposed to regular flour. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Not only that... but they make their milk in house and source really great brands for their cacao, matcha, and other niche items. Their staff is quite friendly and knowledgable, making you feel right at home. You can't find that kind of service elsewhere. I really hope this establishment brings new light to 2nd St. as there aren't many shops with that sort of environment. Some cafes in Belmont Shore charge an arm & a leg for non dairy upcharges, these guys don't! Don't like the prices fool you. One bite and you'll see why they are a cut above the rest.
