We were craving and looking for a healthy, Mediterranean, salad-style early dinner place and remembered this spot. We have been here before, already knew the concept, and decided to eat healthy. We were starving and decided to go with the bowl option. There were lots of delicious items, starting with the carbs, veggies, and proteins, plus the sauces and hummus. Since we love falafel, and this place has one of the best falafels, we ordered falafel on the side and, of course, vine leaf-wrapped dolmas (2 pieces), which are vegan, with our shawarma bowl. The gentleman running the shop really took the time to explain our customizable options and even checked up on us when we were seated outside, which is above what I expect for a fast casual place. I love Hummus Republic! Located in beautiful DT Burbank, it is a convenient place to grab lunch during work or with a friend. There are several outdoor tables, which is always a plus. It is essentially a mom n pop Cava/Chipotle. The staff were incredibly nice. Ambience clean and comfortable. Portions were huge. The owner even came out to check on us, and offer us free falafels (I forgot why but it was very nice of him). The tahini sauces were awesome! When I told them I was a vegan, the server did a great job of walking me through and showing me which options were vegan as well as making recommendations for me. I ordered a bowl to go but highlighted that I have a gluten allergy. The owner went out of his way to let me know about cross contamination. The gyro has gluten and the proteins are cooked in the same pot hence cross contamination. The mushrooms and falafel however are separated so I ended up getting a falafel bowl which was incredible. I visited Hummus Republic in Burbank expecting a fresh, healthy Mediterranean bowl on 9/17/2025. What followed was anything but. What went wrong: Within 4-6 hours of eating their food, I started experiencing severe stomach cramps. By midnight, I had a high fever and uncontrollable runs. The symptoms persisted into the next day--and only got worse. It was clearly food poisoning (exactly what you dread). What makes it so frustrating is that the food tasted fine, looked fresh -- there was no obvious sign that anything was off. What I expected: A higher standard of food safety and care. Fresh ingredients are not enough if something in the preparation, storage, or cleaning is failing. Overall: This was a deeply unpleasant experience. What should have been a casual, healthy meal turned into an ordeal that impacted my health for more than a week.
