Great find. Mount Vernon isn't exactly the foodie capital of the Northwest....but this place is easily the best value we've found anywhere on the west coast. If you catch their 4-course meal before 6pm, you'll be eating some seriously good food for under $20/person. Can't say I've eaten at any Italian place for that price with this kind of quality! Not sure about the other reviews....but we had 4 adults and a 18mo. old each order something different, and ALL of our entrees were delicious. I thought this place was a tourist trap for sure. Living in Atown and driving past this place tons of times, it almost looks to cool to be good, sitting in this hip old granary building, but it is good! They have a fantastic sundown special, let's call it a happy hour dinner special, with several entrees and a semi-prixfix style menu. This is a great value if you make this serving window. The food is very good and the wait staff top notch. Big menu, nice selection of wines, tasty coffee and a very authentic European flavor to the venue. Sorry to detail the foods as it's been awhile. This place is one of the best Italian restaurants in Northwestern Washington! I recall hearing something about the owner/chef being from Sicily, the food is legit. The restaurant is located inside of an old granary, which is where it gets its name from. Every meal begins with fresh toasted bread and a mixture of vinegar and olive oil for dipping. This bread is very tasty! The four course meal is a very good deal, you will definitely get your moneys worth and be completely satisfied. I have tried multiple dishes at this restaurant and have always been more than satisfied. The service is good as well and the chef often offers a wave and a smile from the kitchen as he works his magic. If you are in the Mt. This is hands down the best Italian restaurant in the Skagit Co. area. There may not be that many Italian restaurants around but don't be fooled by my statement. All of their entrees are superb. I highly recommend the Cannelloni Portofino, seafood stuffed cannelloni in a cream sauce, melt in your mouth amazing! They have a wonderful wine selection and knowledgeable staff. The setting is an old abandon Grain silo and mill, fantastic decor and feel. The can accommodate very large groups. This restaurant is really-really good! Me and my wife first tried it in spring after visiting the tulip festival, and we got a chance to enjoy their sunset special (every day from 4 to 6 pm), when you get an appetizer, an entrée and a dessert for ~$15-20 (I don't remember exactly, it was half a year ago). We were fascinated by the quality of food there, and the fact that everything is cooked at order, and wanted to come back again. Recently we decided to stop by this restaurant on our way back home to Vancouver again, and had a very pleasant dinner (half of which be had to box, because entrées were huge, but too delicious to leave behind :)). I give this restaurant a solid 5 star rating, both for their food, and for the quality of service. Will definitely come back again if happen to drive by. read more

This lovely piece of Italy in Washington is located in a re-purposed warehouse/ former grainery. Lovely lighting, rough timber floors, walls in paisano colors with impressionistic paintings by local artists with local themes. It is entertaining that "Il Granaio," offers gluten-free beer (label "Omission") as well as gluten-free pasta! My meal was delicious, fresh and prompt. Good stop on the way to Firenze. The atmosphere is a bit more open than what I normally associate with Italian fine dining, but the menu has many of the right hallmarks. They have a children's menu with above average choices for the kiddies, including multiple fresh pasta choices. My kids had a fun time eating strozzapretti (literally, "strangle a priest" in Italian), and enjoyed the toasted bread that was served with the meal. The fresh ravioli that my wife and I ordered reminded me of how nice it is in my older half of life to have the money and wherewithal not to need to stop at Arby's on my route home, as I did in many years prior. read more

In all fairness, I gave 3 stars because the food is delicious, and I would have loved to give them more. However, I just can't get over the service. Every server that I have encountered here has been terrible!! They are cold, unfriendly,and to be quite frank just awkward. I feel that for the price of this place you'd be treated with a lot more warmth and hospitality! however that isn't the case. Sadly, as the review above stated this is the best "gourmet" Italian food that Skagit county has to offer. I just don't think that customers should have to choose between dealing with poor customer service or good food. Huge disappointment! The food was priced for fine dining but the quality wasn't even on par with Olive Garden and I'm not a fan of chain restaurants. The bread was greasy with oil and dry from being toasted in the oven. I was shocked the salad was iceberg with watered down dressing; not what I expect from fine Italian. I ordered the halibut with lemon cream sauce and it was barely edible. The fish was not fresh, over cooked and drowning in more of what I would describe as a gravy given the consistency. I visited this place for the first time last week, and was impressed. The 4 course dinner menu is a good deal and the food was great. The gnocchi gorgonzola was fabulous! It was so rich and cheesy that I couldn't even finish my plate. The other members of the party also bragged about their meals, which looked good. Everything was hot and well prepared. The service was pretty good for a Friday night. The layout of the restaurant is really unique, and we all commented on it. The desserts were good-- the creme brulee was made in house...wow! The food is good. I liked that they have a sunset special where for 15 dollars you get a four course meal. The salad provided is very fresh. I appreciated that the italian salad dressing was olive oil and vinegar. The garlic bread was delicious but it wasn't bottomless (we never got refills). I had spaghetti with meatballs. I thought the sauce was a little peppery but that's my own preference issue. The cheesecake I had for dessert was delicious! The reason for three stars is that I rate this place among other restaurants of its caliber. The service of the wait staff could have been better. If you want to compare this place against Olive Garden, it would get five stars. But I'm rating this place against some other higher end Italian restaurants. Food and service just ok. We usually go to Skagit River Brewery when we visit Mt. Vernon. Today we decided to try Il Granaio for the first time. The service was ok but not great. My husband asked very clearly for cheese on the side for our daughter's pasta but it came out covered with cheese. Our server said he didn't hear the no cheese part but he quickly replaced it. The garbanzo bean soup was watery and tasteless. My spinach ravioli was good but very rich and too creamy for my taste. There was a father and son at the next table who stomped out before ordering, I am not sure if they were unhappy with service or other issues. Overall I was not terribly impressed. Since I have small kids, I will stick with the brewery from now on. read more

I went here on Valentine day last year it was amazing food and service. So we decided to come again this Valentine day, Let's just start they wrote my reservation time wrong so we waited 20 minutes to be seated. Then waited another 30 minutes to order, After all of that are waiter got or order wrong and she took 20 more minutes to change it, when we got or food it was so grease it made me sick and the lady became very rude and would not help us after. We love this place. Often make special trips down here just to go to Il Granaio. Food is as authentic as it gets outside of Italy. The chef's recipes are amazing, and the homemade pasta melts in your mouth. We love to take advantage of the Sunset Special, where you get several courses for a very reasonable price. Four course meal? $16? Rustic granary with wood floors and a fun atmosphere? Sure! Having just moved to the area, I'd been searching for a place for dinner and stumbled across this gem of a restaurant. Their $16, four-course special is every day before 6 pm (don't judge me), and a quick glance at the menu suggested I should at least try it out. There is garlic bread with balsamic and olive oil, which is a classic throwback to me, and it was quite good. You never find places that do that anymore, and it was a nice way to set the tone. The first course is bruschetta (and thank heavens they pronounce it correctly), even if the pieces are a bit tiny. While the shrimp bisque was a bit thin, my salad was totally fine, and the main course was really impressive. The pasta is homemade - tastes similar to when I make it. The texture can be off-putting; it's definitely acquired, and the sauce is thin like in most traditional Italian households. The veal is a bit on the thin side, but there's enough of it to be filling. I do think the Marsala and picatta could use a bit more alcohol and a bit less mushroom/lemon respectively, but for $16, I'm certainly not going to complain. For dessert, I had creme brulee, on which the sugar was piping hot and the custard was decent and cool (though a lot more pudding than custard). There were also $3 Guinness draft bottles, of which I took advantage. Service was friendly and very accommodating, and when he made a slight error on the bill, was prompt to fix it. I've already been thinking of what I could get the next time I go back for another early bird special. Definitely worth a trip if you're in the area. read more

This was a little nicer of a restaurant than I anticipated based on the $$ but we stopped in for an early Sunday dinner we decided to stay and try it. Pleasantly surprised by the fresh, homemade taste of each dish we ordered. Did the sunset special which was a phenomenal deal. Brushetta and fresh baked bread was amazing. Fresh, crisp, cold ceasar salad starter. Had the ravioli special: chicken, ricotta, and sun dried tomato with a creamy tomato sauce. And a mini dessert option as well. Portions were healthy for the $16.95 price tag. Only recommendations: the rosemary sprinkled on top was in the way, had to keep picking the prickly herb out of my mouth, and there was no sign of chicken inside my raviolis, still the taste was outstanding. Also, they should add a mac-n-cheese dish to the kids menu. If you are going to put chicken nuggets on there, you may as well do a cheesy pasta dish. read more

The only reason that I'm not giving Il Granaio 5 stars is because the delays can sometimes get a bit long, particularly during dinner service. However, it is worth remembering that a) this is not fast-food, and b) my understanding is that they make their own pasta fresh every day. This is good food with fresh ingredients. Obviously, being an Italian restaurant, they specialize in great Italian food. However, I tend to think that one of their most delicious meals is their Gorgonzola steak.. really really delicious and cooked properly, as ordered. My office goes there frequently for lunch (probably once a week), and my daughter and I go there once in awhile for dinner. Good atmosphere, friendly people. We went on a prom night or something once and yes, it was quite busy and food did take extra long to come out.... but it was worth it to me. read more

Salad was crisp, food properly cooked, service spot on, wait staff collected plates properly (one of my pet peeves), and generous wine service! Food was fresh and flavorful, and price was very fair. A lifetime local recommended this place and we were really looking forward to some great Italian food after finishing our work. My wife and I had heard about this restaurant from another couple a while back They told us that that the food was great and the prices were pretty good pretty good. They were not wrong on either count. However, what they didn't tell us was that the wait service was exceptional. Our waiter was named Tony, don't know the last name. He was very personable and funny. He looked after all our needs. (I don't drink wine but I do drink a lot of water and he kept my glass full). Really authentic tasting Italian Food! My 6 year old daughter and I stopped here after seeing a movie and I was surprised it was such a fancy atmosphere, but had casual dressed people as well. We shared MELANZANE ALLA SICILIANA (Fried eggplant served chilled), INSALATA SAINT TROPEZ (spinach, shrimp, pine nut salad) CAMPANELLE AL SALMONE (salmon pasta in creamy tomato sauce). Finished it off with spumoni ice cream. All was delicious! Service was slightly slow and prices slightly high; but the food was so amazing and atmosphere was so lovely, we will be back. We celebrated my Mom's 80th birthday party in a private room at Il Granaio last Saturday and had a great experience! I communicated directly with the owner, Bill, several times before the event and he accommodated us in every way. We had a themed party and Bill allowed us to arrive two hours before the restaurant opened to decorate, and there was no rental fee - even though we occupied the room until almost closing! When we arrived, we were greeted by the manager, Gwyn, who offered her assistance and brought us drinks while we were busy setting up. She checked on us several times and offered her help before the party began. The staff worked extremely hard to keep everyone happy and the service flowed smoothly the entire night even though the restaurant was completely full. Our guests decided on their entree choices prior to the event and all of the portions were large and flavorful. I chose the Pollo Parmigiana which was great and so tender I was able to cut it with my fork! My husband chose the Shrimp Fettucine and thought it had a very good taste.
