Flavorful curry, light and flaky roti where the outer layer is crisp but the interior is soft and fluffy - perfectly done. Nasi Lemak with Curry Beef: Intensely aromatic beef over rice and peanuts. Though it appears like a simple rice dish from images, each component is treated in a way that elevates it to the next level. The coconut rice is fragrant and pairs wonderfully with the curry, the peanuts and eggs seem to be treated with a fish (?) based sauce that makes them so uniquely flavorful. Loved it! Hainan Chicken: Fragrant rice, incredibly tender deboned chicken - this is their best seller and tastes just as good as some of the best I've had, but I will caution that the portion of chicken is on the smaller side. Looking at other reviews, it seems others agree as well. A very light dish, which was a nice contrast from the other curried dishes we ordered. Wonton noodles with curried chicken: This is the first time I've had wonton noodles outside of wonton noodle soup, and I was very pleasantly surprised! This is a vegetarian review--- There were VERY limited items in the menu that were vegetarian and even less vegan items. I got the one entree that could be made vegetarian- stir fried flat noodles without the shrimp or fish cake which was essentially just bean sprouts, maybe 1 egg, and some pieces of chive. They wouldn't substitute anything (I had asked for tofu which they have) even knowing I didn't eat meat or seafood and yet still charged the premium price. The noodles had decent wok hei flavor, but I wouldn't come back for it again except my boyfriend wants to try the Hainan chicken. He really enjoyed the laksa soup noodles. Whenever I drive by Ipoh Kopitiam, a popular Malaysian restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley, there always seems to be a crowd waiting in line. Thankfully, during my visit on a Sunday night, my party was seated right away and we were able to place our order without much wait. Our party tried the Hokkien Prawn Mee Soup ,Char Kway Teow (stir-fried flat noodles), and Malaysian Milk tea. Starting with the Hokkien Prawn Mee Soup, the dish was nicely presented. It consisted of noodles, boiled eggs, prawns, and fish cake. Overall, the dish was just okay. The soup was refreshing and not overly salty, making it easy to sip throughout the meal. Aside from the broth, however, there wasn't anything particularly memorable about this dish. The Char Kway Teow stood out the most. The stir-fried flat noodles were flavorful, and the vegetables, shrimp, and fish cakes complemented the dish well. Between the two, this is the dish I would order again. Not pictured is the Malaysian Milk Tea. The first sip reminded me of chocolate milk, and initially I considered returning it. As I continued with my meal, the flavor became less distracting, but it's still not a drink I would reorder. Price to experience is 4*. I would recommend, if you come during busy times ~7PM there can be a line, so when you get close enough to the place put yourself on the waitlist on yelp. Parking isn't too bad since they have an underground garage too. If there's still a wait after you've checked in on yelp, there's a happy lemon next door and you can get a drink and sit in there while you wait (which is what we did because it was so cold outside). I've always loved Hainan chicken and have been going to Savoy for decades. One day, when Savoy was closed, I discovered Ipoh nearby and decided to give it a try. I have to say, their Hainan chicken and rice are absolutely delicious--so much so that I think I prefer them over Savoy now. The dish comes with all the classic sauces: chili, soy sauce, and ginger sauce. If you want extra sauces, there's a small charge of 50 cents or more, but it's totally worth it. The service is quick--I placed a pickup order, and it was ready in about 10 minutes. Parking can be tricky since there's limited space in both the front and back, and the interior is small, but the turnover is fast. If you dine in, the wait is typically around 10 to 30 minutes. I have had different types of roti before but they generally are very dense and greasy. These were very light and puffy and not too greasy at all. And the dipping sauce was very flavorful. Then we wanted to get a kaya toast and the waitress recommended the one with butter. It was also really good. Yes, basically a dessert but also a little salty. It basically was like a sweet "butter sandwich" but really good. The food trickled out and I was pleasantly surprised how good everything tasted. I can't say that I have eaten Malaysian food very much, but after this meal. I think I should do it more often. The roti was soft and crispy at the same time and the dipping sauce was a great flavor booster. The toast sounded like a random assortment of toppings, but it was a well rounded delicious appetizer. The nasi lemak was packed full of flavor and the beef was very tender. The singapore style hainan chicken is probably their most popular dish, but I am unsure what cut/type of chicken they are using. The amount of chicken you get is EXTREMELY small compared to other places, but it is pretty good (and something to write home about). I think my favorite dish was the Singapore curry laksa noodle. We ordered their top best sellers, the Singapore-style Hainan Chicken Rice and the Toast with homemade kaya and butter. The Hainan chicken was alright, not sure why this is a best-seller, to be honest. It wasn't that great and the portions are tiny for the price. Honestly wasn't worth it for me. I also tried the toast and it was a bit too much butter for me. Also, they're disorganized. We arrived at 2:00 p.m. and got the Hainan chicken right away. But we noticed that other parties who arrived AFTER us were getting their food and finishing their meals and we still didn't get our third order, which was the char kway teow (stir-fried flat noodles). It took 45 minutes to get. We checked in with the waitress at around 2:30 p.m. and she said there was only one chef at the moment. But the thing is, other tables were getting their food and we hadn't. So anyways, we finally received our third dish and it was just okay. It was a bit plain. Just overall, the food made me not have an appetite. I guess the only thing I enjoyed was the cucumber from the Hainan chicken and the water was good and maybe the ginger and garlic sauce that went with the Hainan chicken. Came by today for some lunch, and since there was a wait time, I decided to join the waitlist on Yelp. When I joined, it was about a 15 minute wait but it was good because by the time I got there it was just right before I return. Also note that everyone in your party needs to be present to be seated. Considering there were 22 to 23 parties ahead of us the way it wasn't too bad as the service is also very quick. Once it was our turn, we were called in and quickly seated for a table of seven. After glancing at the menu and briefly looking at it before we already knew what we wanted and meet our orders quickly. We ordered a variety of items from the menu which included the Hainan chicken plate, pineapple bun with butter, toast with kaya butter, chicken curry plate, also chow fun on top of a few drinks. The place was bustling, and by the time we left, a long line had formed outside. Despite the crowd, service was friendly and incredibly efficient--ordering was fast, and the food arrived quickly. We tried the Singapore Curry Laksa and the Hokkien Prawn Mee, opting to substitute egg noodles for gluten-free rice noodles. We also had the Malaysian Milk Tea. The mains came with prawns, eggs, bean sprouts, and delicious noodles. We ordered a few of their popular dishes including Hainan Chicken rice, stirred fried flat noodles, curry chicken dry noodles, curry beef with roti, and Laska. Tip - make an online reservation to get on the waitlist before you head over. It saved us a lot of time. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the service experience. Our table was given to another party who checked in after us, even though it was the same party size. I pointed this out to a staff member (who also seemed to be handling takeout orders). He appeared embarrassed, but unfortunately, there was no apology. It felt like the restaurant was understaffed on a very busy day, which likely contributed to the issue. During our first visit, our entire order was missed. While they did give us an extra order of toast for free, the wait time was very long, which was frustrating. That said, the food is good. Our favorite dish is the special BBQ pork rice--it's very tasty. However, if the pork were not as burned around the edges, it would be healthier and even better. Overall, we hope they can improve their organization and staffing. They have an outdoor patio, which is very nice and I think it is pet friendly. I came back to Ipoh Kopitiam and sampled a variety of dishes: the Kaya toast, nasi lemak, teh tarik, Hainan chicken rice, roti canai, and char kway teow. Out of everything, the Kaya toast, teh tarik, and nasi lemak absolutely stole the show. These three items hit the spot perfectly and are reason enough for me to return again and again. However, I requested the char kway teow without lard, and unfortunately, the flavor didn't hold up. For those who avoid pork or lard, I'd recommend skipping this dish as it doesn't quite deliver the same depth of flavor.
