The service was great the hostess and servers were very friendly. The food on the other hand was not very good. I'm not sure if it was because they claim that it's homemade pasta but the pasta was too soft over cooked I had the shrimp scampi and it was very bland barely any flavor. We did have the garlic cheese bread which was pretty good but our other entrées lacked flavor and again the pasta was not very good it was too soft. We visited Island Pasta in Coronado Friday night. We sat outside and we ordered the CaesarSalad with chicken and the Spaghettini with Meat Sauce and a meatball and Italian sausage. I also ordered the Island salad for an appetizer. The island salad was fantastic. The dressing was little bit salty,little bit sweet which complemented the greens and olives perfectly. My wife's Caesar salad with chicken was pretty disappointing. The salad itself wasn't flavorful and the chicken pieces all still had their anemic skin on. Very unappetizing! Pictures to follow. My Spaghettini was cooked right but the sauce was bland and the sausage was overly spicy, which I can handle, but if others don't know it they would be shocked. Monday evening I decided to get some takeout at Island Pasta and from the looks of things it seemed I could not go wrong. I ordered an Iced Tea which came in a small cup and was charged $3 which on the surface was outrageous. I also ordered a cold shrimp salad and a chicken parm with spaghetti and a side order of meatballs. The wait was fairly long and the price was $46.66 which I thought was steep for takeout on two items. The salad was fine enough, but the spaghetti was awful as well as the chicken parm and they were without questions the worst meatballs I ever tasted that seemed to be made with hamburger meat, no taste at all and the whole meal seemed showered in salt which really makes me wonder about freshness of the entree. I'm Italian-American and my standards for Italian food are mildly high, but this was in fact the worst meal I have ever ordered from what appeared to be a reputable local establishment! The food was so bad I was going to ask for my money back the next day just out of principle, but since I was busy with work there was no time to do so. Island Pasta needs a real self examination of its cooking offerings and practices. You cannot sustain customers when your sauce is this awful and your meatballs are unedible! Oh where do I begin?! After eating at the Del the first few nights of our vacation we wanted to try a less elaborate meal off the resort property. Enter Island Pasta. No reservation, no worries. We scored immediate bar seating. Let's begin with ambiance. Our view was of dusty wine bottles, an adjacent male patron vigorously sawing at a whole lemon with a butterknife that he pulled from under his sunhat and a square "porthole" cutout with a view to the kitchen. The marinara smudged menu boasted homemade pasta amongst its other basic pizza parlor offerings. Playing it safe, I ordered the classic chicken marsala with rigatoni. I assumed our waiter had gotten the order wrong as he situated a plate containing what appeared to be dog vomit, in front of me. Intoxicated on the pungent vinous spirits wafting in the air, I hesitantly began deconstructing this "culinary masterpiece." Disheartened to observe what appeared to be a chicken breast covered in cold strings of onion. The underside of it looked like a skin graft with a charred flap of flesh covering the only mushroom on the plate. The rigatoni tasted like Playdoh and I deferred the bread in fear of cracking a tooth. Perplexed and looking for answers, I remembered the cut out with a direct view of the person responsible for this delight. It took one glance for me to solidify how this recipe had no chance of living up to anyone's expectations, however low they may be. He was unkempt at best, using his bare, catcher mitt sized hands to repeatedly blot the profuse sweat running down his face. Without pause, he grabbed handfuls of raw pasta and threw them into pots. The occasional order ticket drop onto the floor wasn't a deterrent to his cooking method. We quickly asked for the check only to have the waiter, all of 18, come over and ask if there was a problem with my untouched entree. Before given the chance to answer, he asked, "Was it too winey? We have a lot of this dish given back because of that. Sometimes we get too busy to cook the wine off." Astounded by his omission, I added that chicken marsala is known to have mushrooms and boneless, skinless chicken. "Probably. I have actually seen people fight over that skin because it's the best part! If you don't think so I will take if off the check." My daughter has multiple food allergies. We understand there is always a risk we are assuming when dining out... pasta and Italian type food is usually safe for her type of allergies. Island Pasta would not serve her stating they had too much cross contamination in their kitchen. In the many years we've been dealing with her allergies only a handful of times have we been declined service... most eating establishments work with us and our limitations and we are always grateful when they take that extra step.
