Was there yesterday for a wonderful dinner, celebrating a birthday. Definitely 5 stars. When we first walked into the restaurant it seemed very dark and I was already planning to use the flashlight on my phone to be able to see the menu. However, once we sat down I realized there are focused lights above each table that made for a well-lit private table setting. The overall feel and decor of the restaurant was top notch. First, we ordered some drinks and the waiter, who did a great job, brough over some nicely warm bread, it was more like our own round loaf, with two kinds of butter. It was excellent. I got the fillet and shrimp combo, with nicely grilled asparagus and poblano au gratin potatoes. The steak was a perfect medium, tender and well-seasoned. There were 3 shrimp. They were very large and grilled perfectly. The asparagus was nice, however the poblano au gratin potatoes was outstanding. Nice blend of the right amount of cheese and poblano pepper. My partner got the fillet along with Yukon mashed potatoes and creamed corn with bacon. Everything was delicious. We finished up with a chocolate velvet cake. I've eaten here several times, and once again I'm underwhelmed. I'm a sucker for the whole hometown thing, but that'll only carry you so far. The reality is that every time that I go there it comes off as more pretentious. My grandfather was an associate of Joe Gilbert, and I have great memories of his restaurants, as I'm approaching the 60 year mark. It seems to be the way all of the great places are going: overpriced whiskey wall, assurances of the quality of wines I've never heard of, a waiter who seemed to think we were invading his space. I took a buddy there for his birthday and neither one of us drink. We ordered an appetizer, Oysters Rockefeller, which were O.K. ( Jefferson's in Olathe is far superior). The steaks were fine, as in decent. My friend hated the asparagus, but I'm like Mikey, I'll eat anything. My basic mashed potatoes run circles around theirs, maybe I'll send it to them. We split a piece of cake, and the bill was 145.00 +35.00 tip, I'm thinking that this'll be my last visit. In the end, if your date is easily impressed, it's a worth a shot. This restaurant is so beautiful with prices to match, but my sister and I were treated for a special occasion. I opted for one of their "Prix Fixe" combo dinner: a perfectly prepared filet mignon, soup or salad (I chose the scrumptious crab bisque!), and two sides (I chose cauliflower au gratin and broccolini citrus). I could have made a complete meal from the cauliflower au gratin, super cheesy and buttery. The broccolini was too light on the citrus and somewhat bland overall. The Prix Fixe included dessert, so I chose their coconut cake. It was very good but I would probably try something else next time. We landed at the restaurant during Happy Hour, and the "Golden Hour" cocktail is fabulous: Branson Cognac, pear purée, St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur, and lemon. We had friends in from out of town, and so we decided to take them to J Gilberts. We had a reservation, so when we arrived, we were immediately seated. Our waitress was incredible, and did a great job answering questions, and even taking pictures for us. Two of us had the lavender drop martini while we were waiting for food. They were amazing! For dinner, three of us had steak, and I had the seafood mixed grill. I'm pretty sure all four of us ate everything on our plates. It was just so good! We also share a great bottle of wine. J. Gilberts has been well known steakhouse for years and they still do it right. We had a reservation at 5:15 on Saturday and the place was already noticeably busy. That didn't matter because our waiter was on top of it. We were greeted shortly after sitting down. Our waiter brought us waters while we looked through the drink menu. We ordered wine that was suggested by our waiter. It was good and paired nicely with the food and ambiance. They give you delicious bread and whipped butter. Our waiter offered us more after we devoured the first loaf. It was great not having to ask if it was okay to have another. Food was delicious. Nicely seasoned throughout each component. Lobster was cooked perfect. It had a delicate texture and tasty seasoning on the outside. The steak was also cooked perfect to medium rare. The char on the outside was delicious and made for pleasant presentation. The sides were not the star of the show and I liked that. But they were still great. The mushrooms were tasty-- the truffle really showed up.I would like to try the lobster mac and cheese next time I come. Sweet corn and roasted carrots were amazing but the star of the show was the lobster Mac and cheese! For appetizers we did the cocktail shrimp and the Rockefeller oysters, both delicious! It surprised us pulling up to the restaurant as the parking lot look packed. We thought there would be a long wait but we got in right away upon entrance. Inside it was packed. I had been here a few other time and have not seen it this full like tonight. Waiter came to our table right away and ask for our drink order. Fireplace was lighted. Music playing lightly in the background, dimmed lighting and the sound of chatter filled the atmosphere of the room. I ordered their seafood mixer and my friend ordered their steak dinner. If you want to eat at a high quality steak house don't waste your time going to J Gilbert's. While they price their product at a Ruth's Chris, Eddie V's, and Fleming's, the product that they deliver is more along the lines of Texas Roadhouse. We started with a shrimp cocktail. Big mistake when you're over 1000 miles from the nearest ocean. We received 5 tiny over-cooked (yes, they were served cold), rubbery, bland tasting shrimp. We should have left after the appetizer. For main course, we had a small filet and a KC strip. The filet was average, shout out to the kitchen for cooking both the filet and the KC strip to the exact medium rare doneness we requested. The KC strip was supposed to be prime graded. If it was the the USDA inspector needs to go back to meat judging school because I'd be surprised if it even was select grade. It was tough and chewy. By now you get the gist. We were extremely disappointed with the quality of the food. The service wasn't awful, but certainly not at the level of a $200 meal for two. Needless to say, we will never return to this restaurant. read more

This restaurant has a great vibe. Service was excellent and so was our food! My husband had the 8 oz filet and it was so tender you could cut it with a fork. Perfectly medium rare and exceptional beef. I had the grilled sea bass special which had asparagus and grilled shrimp- fingerling potatoes- melted in my mouth. We started with a really interesting charcuterie board with three cheeses and three meats- a sweet mustard and a blend of golden raisins and cranberry that was amazing. Stopped in during restaurant week due to high praises/recommendations from a coworker. Was over all very pleased, not sure I would say I was blown away but will visit again for a date night. The environment has low lighting to give an intimate feel. The Caesar Salad was fresh and served with a Asiago cheese crisp. I would rate that 5/5 stars. The complimentary bread was fresh, however hard like a brick on the outside while soft inside. I would rate it 2/5, inside flavor good but it was so hard you could not bite through it. Really not enjoyable to eat. I ordered a pineapple martini, I would rate it 3/5. The flavor was overwhelming of vodka, you could barely taste the pineapple. It was way too strong IMO. The steak and crab cake were delicious. High praises for cooking the asparagus correctly! I would rate that dish a 4/5. I asked for the steak to be medium it was medium rare, all pink in the middle. The crab cake was delicious, but the texture was throwing me off. When eating any type of shellfish, I chew food thoroughly to make sure there is no extra shell/bones. Not sure where they get their crab meat from, but it seemed to have tiny shell remnants that were throwing me off while chewing and it had a slight fishy taste instead of freshness. Overall though, the flavors were great. The chocolate cake with raspberry I would rate that 5/5. The raspberry ice cream compliments so well with the vanilla and chocolate, it was for sure the highlight of dinner. Our service was wonderful.
