I've been going here since I was a kid. The chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy are excellent.

First of all, we have been going to Jack's since forever! We have always went for breakfast, never anything else. And, second, we should have kept it that way...we decided to eat dinner there yesterday, Sun June 1st - it was around 530p-6p when we arrived. I ordered the baked meatloaf and what a mistake that was!!!! OMG...it was absolutely horrible - dry, an appealing texture, hard and it had a foul smell; it was smothered in gravy, the gravy was good I have to say. I ate the vegetable, a salad and the garlic toast. I finally HAD to tell the waitress about the inedible meatloaf...she was very apologetic. She asked if I would like to get something else...at that point I was so disappointed that I really could not think of eating anything else, she suggested a few things - I finally decided on fried shrimp. Ten shrimp were given to me, I ate 3 and then noticed on the 4th one, that it was NOT cleaned (the shrimp); my husband tried one and it was also not cleaned!!! So, now I have to assume that the other 3 were not cleaned either. I left the remaining ones on the plate; I did not tell the waitress about this, we were both just very disgusted in what had happened with both meals that I received. Now, there is another issue - the Hostess/Manager did walk by a few times and gave my husband dirty looks, I told him "Nah...she wouldn't be doing that!" Well...when I went to pay the bill she (Rae) was at the register, she saw me and walked-away, then a few min's later noticed that no one else was going to take my payment; she returned and DID give me a dirty look and shook her head twice while looking straight at me. I said nothing, just received my change and walked-out. The next time we go there for breakfast, I will let the Manager know about this abhorrent treatment we received from Rae. read more

I got as breakfast burrito which was decent. Typical burrito, but my husband got the chicken and waffles that was delicious lol The waffle has a hint of vanilla flavoring it seems and it was nice and crunchy. The chicken was also crunchy and cooked perfectly. When we go back I think this meal will be my go to moving forward! read more

This diner was so homey. A close friend of mine that lives in Whittier said she had always heard good things about it and that lots of elderly folks visit there for good portions at a good price. Parking at the plaza was very busy, but we were able to easily find parking one street over in the residential area. When we approached the restaurant, it smelled like chicken... yum :). I thought it was just a breakfast and lunch place but they have full on dinner meals here as well. Our waitress was super friendly and quick to offer recommendations. The soups of the day was split pea and vegetable. I don't really like peas but the waitress insisted that the split pea soup was wonderful so I risked it and gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised that a soup made of peas could be so tasty. My partner ordered a steak and eggs plate and oh my goodness the steak was SO TENDER. Like this steak was better than a steak I've ordered at a restaurant that served mainly steak. We also ordered the chicken dinner meal with the chicken gravy, corn, and cornbread. The fried chicken was the star of the show- the breading was perfectly crispy and the chicken was juicy and flavorful. I seriously can't wait to visit this place next time I come to Whittier. My family love Jacks! When cousins come visiting from Kansas and New Mexico, Jacks is always on their list to eat at. We've being coming here for over 30+ years. Even going their sister restaurant down the street "Jacks Salad Bowl". We miss some of the waitresses that have retired, like Becky. My youngest says "mom is want fried chicken, let's go to Jacks." Nah, no more. They have an attitude that is off-putting. We went there with my mom one day and were seated right next to the restroom with the odor to go with it. My mom saw another table open up that was a couple booths away so we went to let the host know we'd like to move. We were told someone else was sitting there. We asked if we would be next on the list for the next table and they said we would have to wait until he sat everyone else on the list. BS! We went ahead and sat at a table that opened up. The place oozes nostalgia w/ it's mid- century everything, including the menu which includes some of the very best pies I've ever had the pleasure of trying: made daily in house w/a rotating schedule much like Marie callenders. Great fried chicken as well, the breakfast burrito ain't shabby either. Just an all around solid diner frozen in time; also, prices remain reasonable - you can walk into Jack's w a $10 bill and treat yourself to something special. We sat outside on the back patio, which is screened in, to take advantage of the fresh air. They turned on the fan because it was a very hot summer day. I had the burger. It was a standard diner burger - no complaints. They are very good about refilling your water glass. The service was excellent - I don't think they could have been friendlier. The parking lot was a bit crowded because there a many businesses around so plan ahead for your visit, even on a weekday. read more

It is a neat neighborhood diner and I really do like the old school decor, but the food is very average. I got the eggs benedict and the hollandaise sauce was a bit too thick and the hash browns could definitely be more toasty. Free parking, open late and clean restrooms always a plus. You can pay with tap card or cash. They have lotto and scratchers but I think I saw a keno machine! I had a breakfast meal, 2 hot cakes with two eggs and two crispy bacon with fresh coffee. My son had a kids burger and he wasn't able to finish it. I haven't been to Jacks in a few years and I went yesterday because my sisters and I were really craving a good American breakfast! Service- we ordered our food fast and we also received our food very quickly. Very friendly staff and they were helpful with questions we had about the menu. Food- I got the mushroom omelet and hash browns which also came with biscuits and gravy. I really enjoyed my meal the biscuits were a little hard but overall everyone in my party really enjoyed their food. Living and growing up in the area for years and years and ... well you get it. I have passed this sign so many times and we just have never stopped. Usually and only because it is always busy busy busy. Our little family finally decided to stop in for the chicken. We had to have the chicken. I believe we order a bucket so that was about 15 juicy, healthy fresh pieces of chicken. No anorexic cluck's here and the chicken gravy and potatoes are delish. That gravy mmm. Too bad we had no leftover to bring home. My two young boys ate the all that chicken. I think I had a breast and a wing. Pretty darn good! How this place stays in business is beyond me. The service is terrible, the food is awful, the coffee was not even warm, and the place is filthy. If you look around you can see the build up of filth everywhere. If that's what the front kitchen looks like, I'd hate to see what the back kitchen looks like. To top it off I watched as a waitress handled toast and biscuits with her bare hands. I watched in horror as she held the toast with her hands to slice it and she checked the temperature of the biscuits by laying her land across them. Jack's touts a strong 90-year legacy, having opened its doors in 1933. Unfortunately, they take this to heart by serving Depression-era food. I'm not sure how this place is so busy on weekends, but I will say that most of the servers handle the rush very well, with grace and friendly conversation. Except for one host, who looked my husband dead in the eyes as he asked a question and just... turned and walked away. Due to the heavy flow of customers, the booths and floor have visible crumbs. The utensils have what I'm hoping is just hard water residue. I've been given a coffee cup with lipstick on it. I've tried this place three times, but each meal was bland and had an off cook. I've been served under-done hashbrowns, and was twice served runny, over-easy eggs when I had ordered over-medium. Denny's is more consistent than this. Corned beef hash had the texture and appearance of cat food. The menu states that pancakes are served with maple syrup, but the bottle at the table is clearly slightly-maple-flavored corn syrup. You deserve better food than this. read more

Breakfast is best -- while I ordered country-fried steak, I received sausage patties, which I accepted. The sausage was accompanied by two eggs over easy and delicious biscuits & gravy and good, not greasy, hash browns. I also ordered one large pancake with maple syrup & iced tea. They had generous portions, and I enjoyed them. My companion said she liked her California omelet. I been a customer for over 20 years now and this is the 3 rd time service is not there. Looks like the service people been to long and don't care most seniors ("Oh Well I try tomorrow ") I ask management what going here answered (" Sorry about that ") Do something about it and don't answer I'm Sorry. Came for a birthday lunch for my cousins birthday and not only did we all enjoy our food but also our waitress Pilar who was an excellent server, with great customer service and personality. The menudo here is terrible. The kitchen does a poor job cleaning the menudo correctly. I don't recommend anyone to try the menudo. You will be throwing your money away on this oily dirty menudo and probably get sick. read more
