I've been here once before and when I did arrive I could see the potential of the place. A homegrown favorite of the Whittier community where young and old alike could come and enjoy a milkshake or some fried chicken. But overall the look of the place didn't really impress me. Came back recently and saw they did a great overhaul of the entire interior design from last I remembered. Deco - 4 stars The design for the inside had bold wallpaper that highlighted the feel of this being a classic diner. Filled with large signs behind the counter such as "Milkshakes", an old timey cash register, and pictures framed and placed on the walls the restaurant is a diner but with a face lift. Service - 3 stars Coming in during the lunch rush hour (11 AM - 1 PM) can feel like you might have to wait a while to get seated but generally they were very quick. Within 10 minutes we were able to get a booth for 3 people. Not slow or rushed the server came around a few times to get orders, deliver food, and overall be around if needed but hidden when not. Food - 4 stars The menu boasts classic American fare with a few exotic add ons. For example they have steak and eggs like any diner would but with their Jack's Special Steak it is marinated just like carne asada would be meaning flavorful, tasty bites of steak with each forkful. The fried chicken is also superb, one of the dishes they are well known for. But they also have things such as soju cocktails, something you wouldn't expect from a place like Jack's. Their milkshakes are thick and delicious. Although the base flavors are chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry you can always put an add on for $0.50 extra such as Oreos, Kit Kats, or Butterfingers. Price - 4 stars Generally speaking the food is ranged from the $9 - $16 price range. Not that bad at all and with the amount of food you get it's a great price. Conclusion Though it can seem diners might be back as archaic restaurants when you find a good one, especially a place where the locals love it, you will find something unique and special. Arrived around 4pm for dinner before concert at theatre a few blocks away, seated right away from hostess. Ordered water to drink. I decided this time to try the fried chicken, server let me sub wing for another leg - a potato salad instead of green beans with baked potato and salad with bleu cheese. Salad came first, good. Entree came in good timing, all were good especially their chicken. Couldn't finish everything so I boxed it. Server was friendly and attentive. Price isn't too bad $9.99 for my entree. Had breakfast here today with my fiancé and it was great. I've been living in Whittier close to 30 years never knew this place was so good. I had the strawberry and banana hot cakes and she had the meat lovers skillet. It absolutely was a knock out of the park. Okay, so I gave this place five stars. But one has to take the type of restaurant into consideration. Jack's obviously isn't trying to be super fancy or gourmet -- it's a diner. And it does diner incredibly well. The French toast is great, as is the fried chicken and fish and chips. Actually, I've never had anything I didn't like from here. I have to say I have been here for breakfast and lunch and never have I been disappointed. Their chicken by far is great! So crispy and juicy inside. I can't believe they give you a whole half chicken when you order them meal. I usually get the corn bread with mashed potatoes and the gravy on the side. I recommend you try this. Ask for the waitress Donna. She is amazing. Such a great personality that made us feel like family. Also very attentive. We had a situation with little flies on our cornbread and she immediately threw it away, gave us fresh pieces and even gave us our meal free!! We didn't ask for it just fresh piece if cornbread but she thought as if she was the customer and went above and beyond to rectify the situation. This was my second time coming here. My Last visit wasn't that great but I decided to give this place one last chance. I was told to try their Fried Chicken before I cross this place off. Every time I come here its never crowded and theres always plenty of seating. They also serve breakfast all day which is hard to find around this area. This visit we ordered the Meat Lover Skillet ($11.95) and the Jacks Fried Chicken ($9.95). The Meat Lovers Skillet came with bacon, sausage, 2 scrambled eggs, home fries, and cheddar cheese. They also give you a choice of biscuits and gravy or toast. We wanted an extra egg added and they ended up over charging us for this...It was extremely bland and unappetizing. The potatoes and were soggy and it felt like you were eating a huge pile of mush. The Jacks Fried Chicken came with a choice of soup and salad, mashed potatoes, slaw, cornbread, and four pieces of chicken. The chicken was average nothing special. I was surprised how crispy it was but the chicken was overcooked which made it extremely dry to eat. The cornbread was so dry it sucked all the moisture out of my mouth, I ended up spitting it out in my napkin. Do not come here unless you want to be disappointed with below average food that tastes like you are eating cardboard. Always passed by this place and finally gave it a couple tries within a month. The waiting area has a Lotto scratcher machine. Very tempting if you love scratchers. They even have the checker near the cashier. Haha. BREAKFAST: They were all standard. Nothing worth raving. It's available all day. The menudo was pretty good. I'm no expert at menudo, but I found it very tasty. I couldn't finish it at the restaurant, so I heated it up the next day with a little chicken broth and it was still yummy. LUNCH: My husband ordered a Monte Cristo. He wasn't happy about it. It was super dry and the turkey smelled kind of old. BUT he did enjoy the curly fries. I had a sourdough chicken sandwich. The chicken was very dry as well. DINNER: Ordered a Red Snapper dinner...never again. Or any other fish dish here. It was pretty bad. However, the fried chicken was bomb. It better be since it is what they are known for. The sides were all whatever. The soup options are decent. The vegetable was definitely the winner, but the cream of chicken wasn't bad. The lentil soup...I've had better. The Butterfinger shake was yummy, so I'm sure all the other shakes are good too. You can't really mess up a milkshake. We will most likely go here again to try more of the menu. It has a homey feel, and we enjoyed that. The workers all seem to be nice as well. There is something of a nostalgic feeling when you walk into an old sit at the counter dinners. Jack's in Whittier is evoked with old-school plates such as liver and onions, meatloaf, and old fashion shakes. This particular night we decided to try their fried chicken plate which they are particularly known for. The plate is served with three (3) pieces of fried chicken your choice of salad or soup and choices of baked or mashed or french fries. The servings are well portioned and good enough for left overs. The chicken was fried really crispy; not over fried, and the chicken was really moist. I will have to say that the season was not enough for either the blandest or saltiest connoisseur/s. The serves was especially pleasant with very attentive servers. Food comes out hot, and your libations are always filled. The two servers we had were pleasant, attentive and always smiling. I do have to say that the old sit down dinner feeling is well and alive here at Jack's. If you are ever in the Whittier area I would recommend talking a load off and sitting down at the counter for a dinner plate or just to have a shake. read more

I came here on a Saturday night, it was pretty busy but flowing nicely. The boyfriend and I decided to sit at the bar so we didn't have to wait for a table. We both opted for a sandwich. I went with the chicken panini which has grilled chicken, avocado, Swiss cheese and bacon, it also came with a side salad and fries. My hunny got a turkey club which had bacon, lettuce, tomato and turkey, he added avocado for $1.50, it came with fries, no salad. I obviously got the better deal lol the taste of everything was very fresh. We decided to go with a slice of banana cream pie& tapioca. Omg so delicious!! The tapioca was definitely homemade, the banana cream needed bananas in it but it was good. This place is rather decent. The outside and inside look old, but it's quaint. We went here on Saturday night and they're open late. Despite there not being a huge crowd (which is rare), the service was really slow. But I'm still giving them 4 stars because the food was worth it. I ordered some chicken in waffles, and I actually liked it. It took forever, but the portions were great, the food was hot, and everything was well seasoned and delicious. I had plenty of leftovers and even ordered a strawberry margarita, which was surprisingly strong. This place has been around for a long time for a reason: they know how to serve good food.
