It's changed, but it's the same. It's the cycle of life. What's the same? The food, the service, the ambiance. It's still the consistently good food i tasted when I first visited in 2012 when I moved to Austin. Still the same blue walls and excellent service by servers who remember your order and don't bother asking because your order has been the same for 14 years. What's changed? The customer base. In an area which was once a place you went if you lived there or knew somebody there, there's a larger variety of people visiting and tasting the Austin tradition. There's nothing wrong with that and I'm glad, but before it was strictly people who lived in the area and had been there for a very long time. What else has changed? The prices. THE BIG: Austin staple and located in East Austin. No reservation, just show up and queue up. Old-Austin decor and private parking lot outside that is alwasy filled up. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I came here with a buddy to try this Austin relic and it did not disappoint. The place was packed! For food, we got their red cake, beans, bacon, five tacos, and coffee. The breakfast tacos are so bomb. I got a chorizo and bacon. Just go with the bacon breakfast tacos. They flour up the bacon so it has an ultra satisfying crunch. Top that with the eggs and flour tortilla and it has me drooling for one soon. Coffee is unlimited. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall the damage done here was around $60 for the amount of food we got. We had an early morning airport drop off and decided to try Joes Bakery and Coffee Shop. I read the reviews and saw a lot of comments that the food was very simple and lacked presentation. I like simple breakfasts and don't need presentation. I had sausage and egg tacos and a Taco Mexicano. My wife had the barbacoa breakfast. The tacos were simple and hearty, the star was the salsa which was great. My wife's plate was way too much food, there's a small plate option, next time she's trying that option. The meat was cooked perfectly, beans and potatoes were great too. The homemade flour tortillas tasted so fresh and are worth coming back for. Service, our waitress was very attentive and pleasant. Perfect! I visited during the icy conditions in Austin and I was greeted warmly as soon as I walked in the door. Thankfully, it wasn't too busy (probably due to the roads as I suspect it does get busy normally). I took a seat at the counter and had a lovely chat with the woman behind the counter who helped me. I had an egg/bacon taco and a bean/cheese taco. Both were delicious (I added hot sauce but you don't need it - however - I recommend it as it's delicious and looks homemade). Both tacos were great - flour tortillas were perfection (I'm visiting here but have had my fair share of homemade tortillas in Chicago and these were lovely). What was better than the food though, was the staff. From the moment I entered until I left, they were warm, welcoming and nothing but helpful. I could have stayed there to chat all day. Please go to this spot - it's tasty, has reasonable prices, but the best yet - the best staff! Also, a parking lot, which is helpful. The pork chop breakfast was tasty and excellent. As was the service. On the down side, a 'package fee' was added to the bill. The order was dine in, not to go. When questioned, the server indicated it covered the cost of utensils, salt, pepper, sugar, and other condiments. This is fraudulent and bogus. The last time I came here on a weekend, the wait was so long that we decided to go somewhere else, but this time I just came with one friend, and we were seated instantly. I came with my Mexican friend who was initially skeptical of a Mexican restaurant named Joe's, but she said it was solid and gave her seal of approval. I got the Huevos a la Mexicana plate, and my friend got the Huevos Rancheros. The food was good, even when the presentation was not very appealing, but it overall did not stand out to us. Their house-made flour tortillas, however, were great. We both liked our food, and it would have been a solid four-star review if it weren't for the random fee they charged us. They included a packaging fee on the bill, but we both finished our meals and didn't get anything to go, so we were both perplexed by this fee. Their website says that this fee is for takeout orders, so we probably should have inquired about it. From reading the other reviews, it seems like they often get away with charging other customers this same fee. read more

Five stars all around, reminding me of home- plenty of parking, great food, and speedy service. Lots of memories at each table/booth- whether you're looking for old sports memorabilia (Kobe featured by the POS) or legitimate Tejano history (see old Governor's proclamations about Joe or photos of officers that served). Old school diner-esque feel that has been around seemingly forever! Lots of souvenirs and memorabilia throughout. Service is amiable and expedient, they keep things flowing as they can get busy during peak times. On this trip, I tried a variety of tacos including Carne Guisada, Sausage & Egg, and Migas con Todo. The Migas con Todo taco was really solid. I added a little salsa for some extra spice to complete it. The Sausage & Egg was just alright - nothing I'd suggest is a must. The Carne Guisada was the real standout. It is one of the best tacos I've had anywhere even if it's just extremely simple great tortilla, great meat, great flavor. Popped into Joe's for breakfast on a Sunday morning and was prepared for a wait as there were many people standing outside. Luckily, since it was just my husband and I, we were able to grab a seat at the bar area. Staff throughout the meal were very attentive and friendly, refilling our coffee and water before we could even ask. Ordered the migas plate and the barbacoa plate and both were tasty! Had to get both the corn and flour tortillas to give equal love. You could tell they were freshly made and oh-so-delicious. We popped back in for breakfast this past weekend. I think we are almost always seated in the same booth, unless I go rouge and ask for counter seating (which my book doesn't care for). Anyway, it was about a five minute wait for a table this time or immediate counter seating. The service it's friendly and fast. We ordered coffee, breakfast tacos, and chicharron plate. Everything was fresh, hot, and delicious. The food is consistently good. I ordered potato and egg, bean and cheese, and bacon and egg breakfast tacos. I didn't think I was hungry enough for all three, but I proved myself wrong. Although, I could go for a fuller taco (so I wouldn't need three), the fillings are delicious and flavorful and the tortillas are perfect. My boyfriend's usual plate was on point. No frills spot with breakfast tacos served all day (well, until they close at 2pm). Came in around 10:45 on a Saturday and lucked out wi the getting seated right away (party of 2). We each got 2 breakfast tacos - eggs a la Mexicana and bean & egg for me, migas con todos with bacon and carne guisada with egg for my husband. We also got sides of guac, cheese, and salsa. The salsa had a nice kick. These tacos are huge. Must be 2x eggs per taco. Both were good, but preferred my eggs a la mexicana more as the egg & bean as the eggs and refried beans were cooked together. The tortillas are amazing and home made. We tried some pastries but I just don't think I'm a fan of bread-based pastries; our server was so kind and gave us one on the house because we couldn't decide. Also this whole feast was $25. This has got to be my fave Mexican Breakfast spot go to. I've been coming here for years so this is a legit statement. Granted, I've actually only ever ordered the Fried Porkchop Plate... ok ok and I've tasted some of my husband's Carne Guisada Plate. Obviously as you can see - these dishes are worth coming back for. Porkchop Breakfast Plate - fried porkchop for breakfast you ask? Let me tell you - it works. The thin porkchop has a perfectly super thin fried batter that adds a perfect crunch. Great flavor. Beans are your stereotypical Mexican restaurant style beans with good flavor and consistency. Potatoes are... let's say not my choice way to cook potatoes. They were just a bit on the softer and not crispy side. But this might be other people's jam. Sad to say I think the price has gone up quite a bit from when I first started coming here. Fried Bacon - this is a unique specialty and an amazing idea. I like crisp bacon and this moves this up a level. Chef's kiss on this one for sure. Oatmeal - this last visit my son decided to try the oatmeal. First off - he doesn't like oatmeal so not sure why this happened. Second off - it was cooked like a thin porridge soupy style. Again, maybe that's how some people like it? Being that it was the same price as my daughter's kids breakfast plate that came with an egg + protein + beans or potatoes + tortilla, not sure we'd let him order this again. The ambiance is fun, they've got music playing and it's always packed so you feel like "this is the spot". Careful, depending on timing there may be several people in line waiting for a table. I heard good things about this place so I decided to visit. I got there in the morning. There was no wait but I wanted to order something to go. I ordered two breakfast tacos with eggs and chorizo without the tortilla. I asked him to put it in a container. The worker said something about chorizo and I nodded my head thinking he just wanted to confirm. I waited a few minutes. It was expensive about $15. I thought OK these tacos must be really good. I take my food to go. I drive , I stopped and I opened my food to eat it and it was literally a container full of nothing but chorizo. They did give me salsa, which is nice. I don't understand how a place can get a Michelin star without providing accurate service. The Michelin star business I believe is a hoax. Yes there are some restaurants that definitely deserve it. FAST FACTS: * Reservations: no... expect a wait, especially on the weekends * Parking: free small lot on the side of the building with some additional street parking behind * 3% "packaging fee" added to the total bill (both dine in and take out) * 18% gratuity included for all parties larger than 5 * Incomplete parties won't be seated * Parties larger than 8 won't be seated * Apple Pay & other forms of contactless payment are NOT accepted * Breakfast is served all day (Tuesday - Sunday) * Closed on Mondays SERVICE - I visited on a Saturday at 9:40 am and was told it would be a 25 minute wait for a table for 2. Received a text after 30 minutes that my table was ready. The hostess was friendly and our server, Saul, was quiet but took great care of us! He took our order quickly, constantly refilled our coffee, and checked on us a few times to make sure we had what we needed. PRICING - The total was $34.28 after tax and the 3% packaging fee ($0.92) but before tip for a coffee ($2.75) and two Joey Rocha plates ($14 each). Overall, the pricing seemed fair for the portion sizes but the "packaging fee" is just kind of annoying. JOEY ROCHA PLATE (6/10) - There was nothing bad about this dish, but nothing stands out or blows you away in the flavor department. The highlight is the pair of tortillas that come on the side because they're homemade... they are on the thicker side but have a great texture. The bacon is probably the runner up for highlights... it's thick and crispy without being too greasy. The pork carne guisada is tender but the flavor is very average and the eggs, potatoes, and beans are pretty plain. It's a good amount of food so it fills you up but you aren't really excited as you're eating it. I'd get this again, but only because none of the other menu items seem to offer anything too different. You do get a side of salsa for the plates which is pretty good! The drip coffee was what you'd expect... nothing special. Joe's Bakery has been on my list to try for about 3 years now so I'm happy I finally tried it but I don't think I'll be back and wouldn't recommend it to others. First time visitor. We had friends in town from Houston and were looking for a good local restaurant and heard the Carne Guisada was top notch here. They close at 2p and we rolled in there after 1, which we felt kind of bad about but they were really nice and accommodated our table of 8... which is a pretty big ask as the restaurant was packed. The atmosphere is classic, old-school family owned Mexican Restaurant. Family photos on the wall and rancheros/Tejano music playing over the speakers. Protip: many of their plates are offered in "Small Portions" for under $8. The small portion is plenty enough for 3-4 tacos. The flour tortillas are handmade and top notch. I could make a meal of them alone. I had the Migas Con Todos and it was really tasty. My wife had the Carne Guisada and it was delicious. The barbacoa was great as well. Highly recommend. There's nothing fancy or flashy about this place. It's just a solid breakfast restaurant with an accommodating waitstaff in southeast Austin with a kitchen that makes delicious food. read more

I know, Joes is an East Austin fixture and it definitely owns up to its "old school" family owned Mexican vibe. I am Mexican American and have grown up eating homemade menudo from recipe past down from my great great grandmother, enjoyed menudo from other friends parents and grandparents as well as had great menudo from mom and pop Mexican restaurants in Chicago, Dallas, and San Antonio. I'm going to write about my own personal experience and perception of my Saturday morning after Halloween nursing a hangover visit to Joes. I went with a group of friends and we were seated at the counter in front of the kitchen where we could see all the action. Our waiter was busy and served us water right away but never brought us chips and salsa or straws when we ordered our fountain drinks. We didn't even realize we were missing out on chips and salsa until we noticed another patron seated to my right munching away, we didn't say anything though as we'd ordered a hefty ticket of items for breakfast. Myself, I ordered a barbracoa taco on corn and a pint of the menudo. When it arrived I started with the taco and that I can promise you I will never order again. The beef was like congealed strands of soft meat in one big clump and is flavorless. Not even kidding. I put salt and green salsa, onion and cilantro which made it palatable and ate about half because honestly the meat just wasn't happening. My menudo was cool enough to start prepping, lime and onion, I got two corn tortillas with it and this is my analysis. The broth is rich and flavorful, but the consistency is not like the menudo of my childhood. It's more "stew like" if that makes sense. Not thick as stew but almost like a bone broth. Not necessarily bad, just different. The other think I noticed, it's not as "red" as the menudo I'm used to, the broth has a very distinct adobo flavor and what I feel like it's lacking is the ancho or guajillo pepper. It misses that gleaming top layer of red oil you usually see floating on the top. The broth is not spicy at all, too. Literally no heat factor whatsoever. The thing I did enjoy however abour the soup, the tripa is tender and cooked to perfection. You can tell the cooks do their diligence in cleaning and preparing the tripe and they cook it for a very very long time. The longer you cook tripa the better. Because it is literally the stomach lining you have to cook it long enough to remove any trace of the actual contents of the animals stomach. Final note, not enough hominy in my opinion. You have the option to add extra hominy or extra meat, I did neither but would have added more hominy had I known there would literally only be a few pieces in mine. Overall, the experience was great, the waiter while busy was friendly and chatted it up with my bilingual friend in Spanish. We ordered a ton of pan dolce from the bakery to bring home and I could only eat a tiny bit of my soup, I took it to go. Today, I warmed it up and added more water to thin it out and put a bunch of tobasco in it, improving it somewhat. To finish off my review, not to say I would not visit Joe's again, I'll probably order carne asada next time as I heard it's amazing. read more

There weren't any straws...the cups had a weird taste on the rim. I ordered Joey Rocha Plate and the waiter interrupted me as I ordered and I didn't even get to choose my eggs as he talked over me. I had to fight for my sausage. The flavors were there but the texture of the pork carne guisada was not right. The potatoes were not crispy. My colleague's menudo was as she described, "it tasted like you make menudo the day before and add water to it. There was not enough hominy in it and it came without cilantro. The temperature of the menudo was lukewarm." Also, when she asked for her Coke to-go, we were charged $0.75 for a packaging fee. He placed it in a coffee cup. This place is an absolute gem in the heart of Austin. In the middle of the Tex mex capital of the world, Joes Bakery is a standout, and stand alone authentic experience that people should be lining up for. To be honest, I did wait for 30 minutes to get a table, as the dining area is small, but it's the clientele that gives it away. Not a bunch of college kids, or tech bros, but an older client base. People that have been going for years. The staff has been working there since before a lot of people in this city was born. The food is incredible, authentic, and delicious. Hands down the best tortillas in this town, as the old reigning champ of that title has gone under due to being dirtbags (sorry Valentina's). They are fresh, made in house, and phenomenal. The dishes are traditional, and they are incredible. This is authentic Mexican food at its best, and I am absolutely shocked I don't hear more about this establishment.
