Cool quick viet food option, but my Joju rice bowl (sausage + caramel pork) with mini spring rolls was just mediocre. The portion of meat was very generous. The sausage was okay, but the caramel pork was way too sweet, over powering the rest of the bowl. Though they do heat up the spring rolls when you order, I wouldn't pay extra for them again. They were dry and lacking flavor. I did like the selection of toppings on my bowl though. The store itself has kiosks where you can order without having to interact with anyone, which I thought was pretty cool. This is definitely a plus at lunch rush. However, unlike other places where you can ask for extras, here you can only ask to NOT have something in the bowl. I have been waiting to try Joju and am super happy to know that they have recently opened one in Midtown! As I entered, there is such a modern vibe with neon title and it's super welcoming especially with kiosks that help take orders. They have a lot of people to prepare the food too, especially during lunch rush hour. The JoJu bowl includes the caramel BBQ pork and sausages. You can have either brown rice, white or salad. And I also included the spring rolls which was delish! Ontop of that, there was the JoJu fries with the daikon radish and carrots and the spices really were a magnificent blend of flavors. Came here for the grand opening BOGO deal and tried the sweet (joju) and beef bulgogi sandwiches. Both sandwiches were packed with flavor, but the beef bulgogi was a little too sweet for my liking. The Sweet is slightly more traditional with the cold cuts and pate, but with a fusion twist! They are very generous with the pickled veggies which are my fav! I also tried the kimchi fries with a runny egg and was pretty disappointed. The fries were cold and very soggy from the toppings. The sandwiches were pretty good except the bread was a little dry, but not bad for a spot in midtown! I will definitely be back and would love the try the bowls next time. I was really torn between the banh mi and the rice bowl, opted for the bowl instead but heard the banh mi is reallllly good and the bread isnt too hard (which is a problem i have with most banh mis). I got the rice bowl with pork and the pork was great!! Sweet and savory and exactly what i was expecting. They give you an adequate amount of toppings. Also got the egg as an add-on and i wouldn't really recommend it unless youre having some intense egg craving bc is a single egg really worth 1.50?? I don't know why they have "kimchi" or "bulgogi" and that was honestly a little offputting. Didnt try the bulgogi but the kimchi that came in the bowl as one of the toppings was alright. Obviously lacked the depth and flavor that a real kimchi presents so my question still stands...why is that here...?? JoJu was on my list when I went to New York for the first time last summer. I had a huge list of restaurants to visit and I was very happy I made a trip to JoJu before leaving the state. But when I was able to get help from one of the employees, the ordering process was quick and easy. The food was so good. Their banh mi's are not traditional because they had bulgogi banh mi and other unique items but the flavors were beyond perfect. The banh mi I had was delicious and the baguette was crispy and not too chewy. I ordered a lot of food and ate everything I bought. I couldn't stop eating, LOL. Was in midtown for a conference at the Hilton, was glad to see a Joju there. Love the Queens location - a trek to get to but always worth the trip. Got the Beef Bulgolgi, loaded fries, and Viet coffee (got to write this all off since it was a business expense for being at the conference, so why not go all out!). As I mention in my Queens location review, this isn't your typical Viet sandwich; its kind of a Korean fusion. $10 a sandwich is a bit pricey and more expensive than it's Queens counterpart, but it's worth it. I don't mind paying for uniqueness and quality. The sandwich and fries were excellent, hit the spot. Definitely needed that coffee having come off an overnight shift and going straight into a whole day conference. I would probably still go back to the Queens location instead of here in Midtown just because it looks like you'll have some more options there. As a Vietnamese, I think I am qualified to judge this place. I came in expecting modern Vietnamese sandwiches, which is their slogan, but it turned out to be more of an Asian fusion place with inspiration from Vietnamese sandwiches. First of all, their bowls are interesting because traditional Vietnamese sandwich places don't usually sell things like this. Thinking about it, it's not traditional Vietnamese food at all. Normally the rice dishes are called "broken rice," and it's literally broken rice with a fish sauce based sauce that you pour over. For their sandwiches, the only thing actually close to a real Vietnamese sandwich is the "Sweet Joju" banh mi. That's what I got. Biting into it, the caramel pork almost overpowered everything else, which was disappointing because I usually enjoy the Vietnamese ham the most. Overall, the sandwich was good, but I wouldn't call it modern Vietnamese sandwiches. Bulgogi isn't even Vietnamese. It's Korean. I'm glad I tried this place, but I wouldn't go here again. So far any Vietnamese food I've tried here has been very disappointing, especially if you consider that many people say the food is amazing here. read more

I was so happy to see this place expand into Midtown from Elmhurst, especially since I've moved away from Elmhurst since, but one thing that really irks me about JoJu in Midtown is that it's really only there for the people who work around there to grab lunch. It's only open until 5 pm, and not open on the weekends, so I either have to get delivery or specifically take time out of my day to travel to JoJu, instead of being able to visit at my own leisure on weekends. That being said though, JoJu has really great food at reasonable prices. And their portion sizes are huge! You can't go wrong with their banh mis and their fries, and I usually get a Vietnamese coffee as well. Looking forward to my next visit/delivery order with them! read more

I can't believe JoJu opened a location in manhattan and I am so happy! I came in a little bit after 1PM and it was not crowded. There are 3 kiosks where you order your food. I only waited about 3 mins and I got my banh mi. I ordered The Sweet banh mi. The pate is super creamy. The Vietnamese ham had good flavors. The caramel pork is really delicious! I think all three were complemented really well with the pickled veggies. The banh mi also had a nice crunch to it. I think you get a great banh mi for a good price. If you are expecting a tradition banh mi from Viêt Nam, this is not the place for you. I think this place does a great modernization of the banh mi. This is the place to try it! read more

Came here with coworkers shortly after Joju opened. Service/Environment- There was a line out the door but it seemed the line was moving quite quickly. They had a few self kiosks that you could also put your order into, I think they're close to figuring out the flow of orders but it was still moving especially with the volume of people. The self kiosk was easy to use and we only waited about 10 min tops for our food Food- I had ordered the beef bulgogi bowl over white rice and cabbage salad, with a runny egg added on top. I got the spicy mayo, jalapeños, and spicy green sauce with it as well. The bowl itself was delicious, there's a handful of toppings that it comes with (kimchi, carrots, fried onions, etc) and options to add a bit more if of interest. Another gem in midtown! Very glad this is walking distance from grand central so I can get my banh mi fix during the work week. Apparently JoJu is also in Queens, and my friends are also in love. But since I don't live in Queens, I'm a late bloomer when it comes to JoJu. I ordered online for pick up because some of the reviews said the lunch lines are pretty long and I wasn't going to wait. I opted for the JoJu fries with runny egg as an add on and their specialty Sweet JoJu with runny egg, spicy mayo, and special green sauce. I must say, I have no idea what's in the green sauce - but it's SO good. The meats were well seasoned and flavorful. But I think I went a little over board with the runny egg. The sandwich itself is already a pretty big portion - I had to save the other half for dinner. One downside about my order was I thought the fries came with too much carrots. I didn't really like eating that with my fries. The sandwich was a little too saucy [mainly bc i had 3 sauces in there so that's my fault] but it was still delicious! The prices are a bit high, with the fries and sandwich my order came out to $20! That's a pretty expensive lunch in my book. JoJu has officially climbed up the ranks into my favorite banh mi place in the city. I will definitely be returning, but on a "treat yourself" basis because of the prices. read more

Review is for a pork banh mi. The sandwich was tasty, but I'm not sure the fast-casual price of $10 is justified. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Viet establishments in San Diego and the SF Bay area that offer better value. Asked for spicy mayo and jalapenos but didn't get the jalapenos, and the spicy mayo had very little kick. I dunno, I guess the sandwich was just too rounded. To me, the difference between a banh mi and say a chicken parm hero, is that while both are hearty and satisfying, the banh mi should have more "Zing!" A spicy kick, a crunchy-sour kick, or something pronounced. Standouts for the sandwich were the bread, which was sublime, and I liked the way the do chua (pickled carrot and daikon) were sliced thin. I am a big fan of Joju in Queens. We used to go to Joju a lot in Queens. We were very excited to go to Joju in Manhattan. There are some pros and cons of Joju in Manhattan when we compared to the one in Queens. First, price is a little higher. As expected, the sandwiches in Manhattan location are average $10 per sandwich which is about $2 or $3 dollars more than Queen's location but it comes with nice paper box in Manhattan. The sandwich is about the same size for both locations. Queens location offers a free egg when customers check in on yeIp and which Manhattan doesn't. It seems there are less choices for sandwiches and drinks in Manhattan. Second, the line is shorter in Manhattan so far. The The space is bigger in Manhattan. Also customers can order through iPad which is very convenient and efficient. For me, I am willing to go to Joju Manhattan again when I hangout near midtown and will recommend more people to go to Joju Manhattan! read more

I've tried the bowl a couple of times with a mix of cabbage and rice as the base, plus all the toppings. Fresh and light with a little heft and flavor from the sauce and veggie beef. I got the spring rolls added on top once, but they didn't add enough for me to order them again. A note to vegetarians (thought it's pretty well explained on the ordering kiosk or menu)--opt for "no pork sauce" to keep it truly veggie. Fast and organized. As a big fan of Vietnamese-style sandwiches I was very excited for this location to open. Overall it was very good. I ordered the bulgogi sandwich and the thai tea and they were solid. The ordering experience is interesting-they have one human cashier and two self-serve kiosks. I used a kiosk and it was a pretty smooth experience. I was slightly disappointed in the limited sandwich options. A friend of mine ordered the salad and was not thrilled with the small amount of meat that came with it, although the sandwich did have a decent amount of meat, so no complaints there. Worth trying out for sure, I will probably go back to taste something else in the future, but might not become one of my regular lunch haunts. read more

JoJu is ... okay. Just okay. Caveat: I came here during the soft opening. The restaurant is likely to improve, as they are want to do. I ordered a lemongrass chicken banh mi. (Normally, I would order the traditional, but I went with something different.) The bread wasn't quite up to banh mi snuff. The crust didn't have the crispy bite that banh mi bread should have, while the interior was too dense. The flavor of the chicken was fine--the lemongrass marinade definitely came through. The chicken itself, however, had a slimy texture, which detracted from the experience. They topped the banh mi with pickled carrots and daikon radish, and cilantro. Both typical. I don't recall any cucumbers, which would have added a lovely crunch and flavor. I'll probably be back--I work across the street--but, so far, JoJu isn't the pinnacle of banh mi. read more

Was SUPER excited to see a Joju opening up near my school. I've always loved the original location in Elmhurst but found it a bit of a hassle for me to commute to. I came for the BOGO event and waited for 1.5 hours. I generally don't like to wait too long for food, but this was WORTH. The menu here is smaller, but they do have some additions like rice bowls/salads. The interior is a lot bigger and much more modern with two floors, allowing for more seating. The system is also pretty efficient here with an assembly line style, which is most definitely necessary to survive the lunch rush in this area. They even have kiosks for future use. I shared a lemongrass chicken and The Sweet (Joju) with a friend and they were both delicious! However, we did both agree that the latter was better. A warning: the sandwiches are verrry filling. It may be perfect for a guy, but I regretted eating both halves because I was so full for the rest of the day and had to skip dinner. OMG I just finished my sandwich and spring roll and had to come here to write a review. Today is their grand opening and BOGO. Of course I had to go check it out. The line wasn't too bad. The people working were efficient. I had the bulgogi sandwich with spicy mayo and it was absolutely delicious! There was so much flavor in the bulgogi. It also had the perfect amount of crunch. One thing I'd possibly change is the spicy mayo. I could barely taste it. The bulgogi over powered it. It wasn't spicy at all. I judge a Vietnamese place by how good their spring rolls are. This is a legit spring roll. It's cute that it is a different shape - longer. It was really good! I just wish it wasn't so expensive. It was $4.55 for two long ones. I guess if you cut it to normal size, it would be 4? I won't get the spring rolls again bc of the cost, but it was good! I can't wait to come back to try their bowls and drinks.
