Came on Valentine's Day for dinner with our family. Ended up getting here a bit late, so we missed chicken, rib tips, potato salad and cornbread. Had a $50 Groupon, which meant we had to eat in or pay a $5 fee. It wasn't a huge problem except it took awhile for us to get two tables so all 4 of us could sit. Super small place - just 4 tiny tables that seat 2-3 each. Tough to get to coming from the WSeattle side due to no left turn signs, but fine if you come over the bridge. The person who took our order suggested the 4-way, except we had to sub in more ribs for chicken. Weird thing was that we only got 8 ribs total... Does that mean 4 ribs replaced a whole chicken?! Not a good deal, then. Had a groupon for takeout last night, but was pretty disappointed. I have had bbq from here before, and felt it was much better several years ago than whatever we had last night. We had a variety of meat including brisket, rib tips, and pulled pork (no chicken, as they were out). The meats had nearly no smoke on them, but it was hard to taste because they were SMOTHERED in sauce, which was good, but totally hid any flavor of the meat. The meat itself was very tough, VERY tough. Out of it all, I would suggest the brisket if you pick any. However, as a southerner from just outside of Memphis....this is not what traditional bbq is. I went here with my husband super excited to try some barbecue as we are from the Midwest and have some pretty bomb barbecue!! It was kind of a let down honestly (not because of taste). So I bought a groupon to try this place out. 1st off, parking is a little tough. My first impression upon walking into this place wasnt very good. Kind of a whole in the wall and no visual BBQ. This is the worst barbecue I've ever had. I think there's one in Ballard, too, and I hear that one is good. But this place is terrible. I think any of the positive reviews for this location are mistakes. The rib tips were pretty much inedible. We seriously couldn't chew them. It should have been a red flag when the people after us were told there was a "half hour wait" on rib tips. They should have been cooking all day... When you're out, you're out! These tasted like they were cooked hastily in a microwave after sitting out on a counter for half a day. I had the brisket and the ribs, both of which were very tender, almost too much so. I was warned it was "pulled brisket" because they couldn't slice the brisket properly. That also implies there's a fair amount of fat, so beware. Didn't like the coleslaw or the fries, and they were out of pretty much everything else at 7pm on a Saturday. After reading about Jones' BBQ name change and reopening after the founder passed away, I decided to stop in and see how their BBQ was. It's a small place, with four 2-tops for seating but most of their business appears to be take out so that's not a big deal. They have all the expected BBQ staples and sides and I ordered some brisket and ends with mild sauce on both. The order was up in about 10 minutes (there were a few folks ahead of me) and I was on my way home. After unwrapping the meaty bounty, I realize I probably should have gotten the sauce on the side since they were pretty generous with it. The sauce was a nice sweet sauce, if anything, it was a touch too sweet but not bad overall. The brisket was pretty standard fare, perhaps a hair on the dry side but it had good flavor. The ends were pretty good too. I like my ends a little more burnt than others but these were still good. I didn't get any sides this time but I'll likely go back to try their ribs, chicken and hot links and sample a few of the sides as well. Was it the best BBQ I've ever had? No, but I've been spoiled when visiting Texas and the Carolinas where BBQ is a religion. I was a fan of Jones' when they were in Columbia City (locations on MLK and on Edmunds) and was sad to learn that they moved when I left the area. When I moved back, I was sad to see that there was no Jones's BBQ awaiting me in my hometown. I guess they've been here for a little bit. But I stumbled across their West Seattle location today when looking for a place to eat lunch on my break. And I'm glad I found them. I like that they post a giant version of their menu outside. Inside, the dining area is very hole in the wall/divey. And that's how you know you're in for a ride. My rib tip platter with mild sauce came out quickly. Sadly as I get older, I can't handle the hot stuff anymore... But my order was smoked and sauced to perfection. I felt bad about having some sauce left on my plate. That's not the type of sauce you just toss. If it weren't for the other people there, I'd have licked the plate clean. Spotty at best. Went in there today (Labor Day) trying to use a $50 Groupon voucher. In line behind three dudes. Piping hot in there (no fan/AC.) The tourist in front took forever to choose the sides for his 'Small Platter.' The cashier was super slow and filled all the call-in orders (screwing up each and every one) before taking food orders from the people waiting in line. I stood there sweating in the ants and flies and stifling heat for a half hour only to be told 'no brisket.' Stormed out in a huff and went to Pecos Pit across the street. Not the first time. Hugely disappointed! Usually the best BBQ in a town is in a quiet location or a hole in the wall so I was so excited to find that Jones was 2 blocks away from my new house! Coming from California, I know how hard you have to work to find a good rib and macaroni salad and sadly, I'm still looking in Seattle. We were surprised to find a sign next to the register stating CASH ONLY - maybe the owners should update their Yelp listing. Fortunately we did have cash, but we're then surprised to see that many of the items we were interested in were sold out. Ok...we ordered a couple of meals to go: the rib tips and a quarter chicken, both with sides. The rib tips were flavorful but chewy (the overall flavor gets this review a second star over the last one), the chicken tasted good as well, but there was so little actual meat that I didn't get to enjoy it very much. The sides were ok, but came in small containers not much larger than dixie cups. Over all a very disappointing meal; we paid $22 for less actual food than a single meal at any other restaurant. The sides are delicious - potato salad, okra, corn bread... very yummy. The first time we ordered, the meat was so dry that I didn't have more than a couple bites. The second time, we ordered brisket and it was very, very good. The third time, the meat was dry, but edible. The sauce is very good. They really need some assistance/guidance in the desert department; it is made cheaply and you don't get much so I'd steer clear on that. The collard greens that we ordered last time were too salty - we threw them out. For what we've spent at this place, we don't feel that we got our money's worth, but there's a lot of potential for it to be outstanding, if they just put the time and effort into making sure their food is consistent and meat tender. highly do not recommend. i ordered food at the end of July on a Sunday, they close at 8 so we ordered at around 6:30ish. After ordering DIRECTLY THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE, i was informed that my order wouldn't be ready until 7:50. Because we didn't want to show up right before they close, we decided to pop in a little early at 7:45. They were CLOSED. Before going, we had walked to the store across the street and they had been open. Meaning in a matter of 5 mins they closed knowing our order was placed. After going home confused, I got an email at 7:55 saying my order was ready for pickup. We went back and they were still closed. because they're closed on Mon and Tue i had to wait until Wednesday to call. I called about a refund, being extremely nice and understanding, as i too work in customer service. the lady on the phone had such extreme attitude and had me on hold for 20 mins. she said she processed the refund and that was that. after waiting over 2 weeks for my $60 refund, I decided to stop in to ask because i had still not received it. The lady at the counter was extremely hostile, looked up my name and told me it basically wasn't her problem. They pulled my name up with the dates and price and everything!! I have pictures with dates of the store being closed, I have emails they've sent confirming the order and telling me the order was ready. they scammed me of $60, and never once offered to compensate in any way. I am just so baffled and irritated. Then, after a bad experience, I called the owner AND wrote this (below) on their website. I received no response from either, despite their website's message stating generally that there would be one. We should support restaurants knocking themselves out in this pandemic, fighting to stay in business. I guess Jones is not one of them. Here's what I wrote Jones: If you searched your #1 fans, you would find our names. We've been enjoying your barbeque meals regularly and often since you were on Lander in Seattle for as long as we can remember. Today (4-27-20, 3:45pm) we had a very unfortunate experience you might want to know about. We were the only ones in your West Seattle restaurant. The young woman who gave her name as Shaliyah took our order. Her demeanor was dour and surly. Your menu choices are many and varied. We said we wanted to maximize our $50 Groupon, and we wanted a whole chicken, 1/2 slab of ribs and sides of mostly beans and a little coleslaw. She suggested the "5-way." It totalled about $55. I told her the lovely woman who often waited on us in the past figured a combination of what we wanted for just under $50. Shaliyah reconfigured our order and charged us $52.25. We gave her the overage. She handed us our order, and we left for home, 15 minutes away. When I opened the bag there was only 1/4 chicken, a slab of ribs and 2 eight ounce containers of beans. So I drove the order back to your restaurant to show her. She was immediately defensive and angrily told me that I should know what to order without her assistance, that she made the order total to $50. I asked her to look at what she gave me. She said she knew what she gave me, that there was a whole chicken and she gave me what I wanted. After checking the order she saw it was not a whole chicken, and the sides were too small and too few, and there was no coleslaw! She said it was her brother's fault. The gentleman who originally packed our order was not there when I went back. Shaliyah was alone. She huffed to the back of the restaurant, muttering under her breath, chopped a chicken and kept arguing when she returned to pack the chicken and a small container of coleslaw. I told her there weren't enough sides, and I politely asked her to pack 2 large containers of beans. I paid an extra $8+ for the beans which should have been included in the order, and I left fuming for having driven there and back because of her incompetence and paid extra for the privilege. I asked Shaliya for the owner's contact information, and she wrote: William Jones (206) ***-****, but I've chosen to put my complaint in writing should I choose to give it wider circulation. Wed i attempted to call in order no answer. I get there man on phone ignored the family before me and myself for awhile then while on phone attempted to take persons order then asked ladie to do it. BEST BBQ I have ever had. My boyfriend and I were on a road trip from San Diego, California and have experienced a lot of excellent BBQ in our lives. We both agree that this is the all time best bbq we have ever had the pleasure of putting in our mouths. We ordered a two meat plate with ribs and brisket with a hot link added on as a side smothered in their hottest sauce, mac and cheese + collard greens on the side. Everything was to die for and I have already recommended it to everyone I have talked to since we ate there. The service was extremely friendly and easy to work with.
