Up in the Oakland area, this is definitely my recommendation to get some kbbq. Meats are so juicy and flavorful, and at a comparable price point when you compare other kbbqs places in the area. They can get busy, but they're busy for a reason. Aside from the meats, they have lots of veggie additives you can ask for like lettuce wraps, rice wraps, garlic, onions, etc. which I appreciated! 4.5 stars, and my favorite of the KBBQ AYCE options in Oakland. They're a less shiny environment than Ohgane, but I love the no-frills mom and pop operations here. The bathroom could use an update, but otherwise I wasn't at all worried about covid or other issues of cleanliness to dining. I was so grateful to get a reservation for our large group of 10 for dinner on Friday - and surprised considering I called the day before. I definitely recommend a reservation on Yelp or by calling, because even so we had a tiny bit of a wait while they cleared tables for us and the front area was packed with groups that were on the Yelp waiting list (I think it was 10 parties on the iPad when we walked in around 7.30 pm). Food was fast, and we never had to flag down a server or wait long for drinks and other things to come out. They were even so attentive they noticed when someone dropped a napkin and their chopsticks, immediately appearing to replace with fresh ones. They won't come around and check how you are doing and help with grilling. I like doing my own cooking, but if you are expecting that service from other KBBQ experiences, you won't get it here and understandably so, as they are very busy getting orders out. The array of banchan is the best I've found. The quality and selection of meats are also excellent, while the seafood can be skipped. I have also dined here with my nephew outside of AYCE. Best KBBQ that I have had in the bay. Great quality food and flavors on the marinated options. The service is pretty quick ( can sometimes miss things as expected in kbbq but be persistent and they'll bring it!) and there are some unique sides like kimchi pancakes and kimchi fried rice that I haven't seen before. My favorites are always the brisket and bulgogi beef. I liked the LA Short Ribs this time too, but they have bones so it's more work. The price os $32.95 for 90 min AYCE and we definitely enjoyed ourselves this last weekend! This is my go to place for AYCE KBBQ and favorite place to get naengmyun, or the cold chewy Korean noodles in radish broth. Service is fast, effective, and staff is friendly. I really liked the fried rice and the buckwheat noodles. The corn cheese was lacking a little favor though. Overall really good price for the food. The service was great, food came out relatively fast. Everything went well except we had a bit of an issue with the birthday discount. Our friend has a leap year birthday (02/29) and they didn't believe the ID was real at first. Tried this place for the first time last weekend. Hubby was craving Korean food. So, for starters, we decided to try their family lunch deal. The Family luncheon comes with a choice of soup & choice of meat, and four big servings of rice, and a whole bunch of side dishes. I love spicy food so we choose the spicy tofu soup and spicy pork dish. For those who will be trying it for the first time, I wanted to let you know that it's really not not that spicy at all. While they give you large portions of everything and pretty descent tasty meal, this place is not my favorite. We will however come back and try out other items on their menu. It's been a full month since my last review (and last visit here) but not a day has passed that I haven't thought about their Bulgogi lol. Today, I could no longer fight the craving and came in for the "lunch special." Quotation on lunch special because certain meats don't qualify for that meaning you have to pay the dinner price (Bulgogi and LA beef ribs being the speciality meats) The service is 10/10 we came on a rainy day so we were actually the only ones in the entire restaurant meaning service was pretty attentive. (It was a bit awkward at some moments because the waitress stood 3 feet away watching us eat most of the time; I assume to offer new meat and change our grill - which she did constantly, just wish we had more space.) We went through 3 rounds of meat and had our grill changed each round as well. Food: 8/10: Bulgogi is obviously my favorite however every other meat lacks flavor/seasoning (even the spicy options.) I know most are unseasoned but the options they provide for "seasoning/marinade" are not enough, the reason I deducted 2 stars. Sides: we got the white rice, kimchi fried rice, cheese corn & extra caramelized potatoes. All 10/10, my bf loved the kimchi rice and I probably had 2-3 rounds of the potatoes (small portions, ofc.) OVERALL, highly recommend! Don't rush to get here during lunch if you plan on eating beef or pork as it won't be considered the special but service and food is worth the price and it's a great experience. read more

Food tasted great. Meat was well marinated and had a good variety. Typically at ayce kbbq places, the sides are there for filler, but that was not the case at Jong Ga. All their sides and non-meat dishes were excellent, which complemented the meat well. Pricing is also very fair. However, service was absolutely terrible. My group came at about 3 hours before closing, and the staff rarely came to our table and was very passive aggressive. When we finally got their attention, we ordered a lot because we had eaten all our meat and sides. Proceeded to get side-eyes and continuous inattention. At one point, the waitress came and turned off our grill, I guess to signal that we're done? We still wanted to order more and had to keep asking them to turn our grill on. Service kept getting slower and fewer, and it got to the point where we had to forego things to ask for because we knew we weren't getting them. Didn't get any refills or more napkins and things like that. Many of the dishes we order never came, and we barely were able to get their attention. The restaurant wasn't very busy at the time, so not really sure what the issue was. Won't be coming back. read more

Great KBBQ spot in Oakland! We were debating between a few different AYCE KBBQ restaurants in the area for a friend's birthday, and we decided to go to Jong Ga house on a whim. We called a day ahead to make our reservation. Our group of 10 was split into 2 groups of 5, but the staff did a great job in accommodating us by seating our tables right next to each other. The banchan was already on the table when we got there, which is always appreciated especially if you're like me, and you prepare for KBBQ by eating as little as possible throughout the day. My favorites were the potato, fish cakes, kimchi, and japchae. We ordered a few rounds of meat, and all of them were very tasty! The standouts were definitely the bulgogi and the pork belly. We also had some spicy rice cakes on the side, which were delicious as well. The servers were so attentive; they made sure to change our grills often without us even asking. Since it was my friend's birthday, they gave him a special birthday surprise, complete with free dessert! What I loved most of all other than the amazing food and service were the prices. Wow, I haven't been to Jong Ga House since my college days! My husband and I were were looking to have AYCE Korean BBQ for dinner and decided to make a reservation at Jong Ga House. I highly encourage you to make a reservation, especially for a large party. The restaurant got pretty packed on a Saturday evening. The table was all set up for us when we sat down - we had yummy ban chan on the table! We enjoyed all the meat - we liked the galbi and brisket the most. The spicy soft tofu soup was good as well! The restaurant was well ventilated. Service was quick and they helped us change the grill when needed. The only trouble you may find is when looking for parking. This was one of my best experiences at a Korean barbecue joint. $32 all you can eat Korean barbecue 17 for kids I think if you have a party of six or more it's only $10 to add hot pot. Each and every staff member was so helpful we didn't have to ask for anything they came to replace the stove top they came to fill more waters constantly coming around to ask if we needed anything else I've never had such an amazing experience anywhere you have to ask press a button but these people kept an eye out to make sure you had a great experience. First time visit this weekend! Full disclosure, I'm a huge fan of the old Palace BBQ in Santa Clara that sadly closed some time ago. But they set a high bar for KBBQ that was delicious, served up AYCE without frills. Jong Ga House is by Lake Merritt in Oakland, just down the street from where my tattoo parlor used to be (Old Crow Tattoo, since moved to another location). The restaurant was PACKED and servers were understandably hair on fire for most of the evening. Which means it's asking a lot for some rudimentary guidance and explanation for first-timers - first time for my wife and I at this restaurant, and the other couple's first time to KBBQ ever! Note that while they offer a bar, it's not stocked with top shelf. They major on soju, sake, those kinds of drinks, which we enjoyed. Time to order food. Lots of different meat options - because we went AYCE, they will bring a maximum of 4 type of meat at a time, and when you finish that, they'll bring another 4, etc. You get the idea. other options like noodles, rice, vegetables, sides...unlimited just ask. We filled up the table quickly with short ribs, rib eye, spicy pork, chicken, all of it was delicious. Sides are also plentiful. There are more than a few AYCE KBBQ options if you're willing to drive these days, and I can recommend Jong Ga House to your short list of options. I'll be back, as I slowly make my way through my Bay Area list still to try. My heart still goes back to Palace BBQ, as this is where so many good memories reside sharing KBBQ with my sons. I've been here twice so far. The first time with my parents for dine-in before COVID and the second time for takeout after COVID. I have to say both my experiences were average and left a lot to be desired. I have had better quality Korean food I must say. For my most recent visit, I ordered the family meal which had TONS of food. I got spicy pork, sautéed squid, grilled mackerel, tofu soup, a variety of ban chan, side lettuce, and 4 rice for only $50. I also had a third party $15 coupon so I only paid $40 including tax. That's an incredible deal for the amount of food but not so much for the quality. The grilled mackerel and the ban chan were okay, nothing memorable. The spicy pork tasted a bit dry and old. The tofu soup was very tasty, however. And one thing that really stood out was the sautéed squid. It was super fresh and full of flavors. I enjoyed it a lot and would highly recommend it. Other than that, I wasn't too crazy about the meal I had. Sure I got tons of food I could eat for a few days but was the quality worth it? I don't think so. Overall, it's an okay Korean joint. TLDR: long wait, but good KBBQ -- First, parking can be very difficult in this area around dinner time on the weekend. We had reservations set for 7:00pm on Friday for 2 people and arrived right on time. However, the restaurant was extremely busy and hostess did not check in with us until 7:30pm. We didn't get seated until 7:45pm and tbh I'm not sure what order she went in when seating people. I watched her go through the yelp list and she definitely wasn't going in order. There was a large group of 7 people who got seated after only waiting ~5mins, whereas we had to wait ~45mins for 2 people... I assume because the larger table opened up before the small one. Once we were seated, we were able to order pretty quickly, got our food and started cooking. The food was pretty good, but it's pretty standard for any KBBQ. Nothing in particular stood out to me, but I did like the brisket, garlic pork belly, and the short ribs. The tofu soup and cheese corn were good sides to order and I have no complaints. Overall, the place feels pretty small and I wouldnt recommend parties of more than 6. I've been here many times through the years and never had a bad experience. The food and service are consistently good and the owners and staff are always friendly. With the pandemic raging on, they were forced to switch up their business model. Instead of AYCE, they now offer a $50 takeout family meal kit and raw marinated meats and banchans by the pound. I came here on 07/20/2020 to pick up some meats and banchans for my family's Independence Day celebration. The interior appeared to have gone through a thorough cleaning and some safety measures were implemented. I got a pound of bulgogi ($12.99), a pound of spicy pork ($8.99), a pound of spicy chicken ($8.99), and a 32 oz box of banchan. The total, with a small tip, was $45. While waiting for my order, I chatted with the owners' son. He's just as friendly as his folks. He told me they are doing okay business despite the pandemic. I was happy to hear that. Everything was nicely packaged. Thanks to Jong Ga House, we had a wonderful celebration with delicious food. Please go support them if you can. This place is still as good as I remember! Every time I go to Jong Ga House, the service is great and the food is delicious. I can here on a Saturday for lunch around when they opened and the restaurant was already packed. The restaurant uses a QR code system for the menu. Our waitress was prompt to come get our order. We started off with a complimentary bowl of cold noodles, which was lightly spicy and refreshing. What we ordered: -LA Galbi: The meat for this Galbi is so tender! I like that it was easy to remove the bones to eat. The marinade itself is sweet and salty. This is perfect with rice. -SoonDuBu Korean Soft Tofu Soup with Beef: I love that this soup is so warming and comforting. The Tofu is soft and pillowy. The Kimchi and Pork make a perfect pairing to rice. All side dishes were also great; I liked the fish cake and glazed potatoes the best. Overall, this is a great place to get some Korean Food!
