Having been on my list for awhile and finally trying it! To my surprise it's full house as early as 530pm but line moved quick and it's easy to get seated. Even when we're still in line, the staff already let us know where to sit. I really appreciated the warm gesture and attentiveness of all the servers for sure!! It's a huge space that gave more industrial vibe to me than traditional Taiwanese theme, but it's totally a very convenient dining spot for both small and big group. We tried some from the menu and were pleased by all of them. They might look small but very filling actually since all the bowls were filled to top. The Dan Dan noodles have flavorful peanut sauce with it perfect noodles texture. Would recommend add extra sides for proteins, which we opted for pork belly and minced pork. The belly was extremely tender with thick juicy slices. The minced pork was equally palatable. They're generous in portion for being sides, we even packed some home. We obviously didn't skip their Hakka Mochi for dessert, which were still warm chewy yet moist when served and covered in overflowing black sesame and peanut powder. I wasn't usually a fan of black sesame but decided to give this one a try anyway and ending up no regrets at all! The powder was such spoiling mix of sweet and salty in one bite.
The dan dan noodles and braised pork rice were both excellent and tasted very authentic. The hot and sour soup had a really strong pepper flavor--I can't handle spicy food very well, so I could only manage a few sips! My stomach wasn't big enough today, so I'll have to come back and try more dishes next time. I arrived around 3 PM, and there were still seats available, but people kept coming in nonstop. Business was incredibly good! I can only imagine that during normal meal hours, finding a seat would be nearly impossible.
Highland Park is a gentrified L.A. neighborhood, you can tell from its narrow streets and tiny cramped lots, not to mention horrendous parking, that attract young people of the tik-tock social media type like in Silverlake and Echo Park. I would never live in such places but only go there to eat. "Joy" is a great find in a sea of gentrified chaos. Given its location, the food at "Joy" is surprisingly good and authentic, even by the standards of the predominantly-Chinese SGV. The minced pork rice is as good as "Golden Leaf" in San Gabriel, and the traditoinal shaved ice is better, bigger and cheaper than "Meet Fresh", a SGV favorite. The Taiwanese-themed decor also adds to its exotic appeal. Chill, happy staff.
Met up with my sister and her brother here for lunch. The wife found this place from a tiktok video and we decided to try it since we didn't get to try a lot of Taiwanese food on our trip to Taipei. When you come in, there is a sign that tells you to order before being seated. My sister and her bf had yet to arrive so I placed a sizeable order for the 4 of us. Luckily, they were there (waiting in the car) so I told them to walk over so we can be seated. I ordered 2 orders of chiayi chicken (1with white rice and 1 with brown rice), 2 orders of thousand layer pancake (1 with egg and 1 with egg and cheese), shrimp wonton, dance dan noodles, wonton noodle soup, hakka mochi and forbidden rice pudding. For drinks we had a few of the shaken iced green teas and 1 taro milk tea (my sister said it didnt taste like taro) Everything was great. I was surprised my sister's bf liked the food. The chiayi chicken was good with a bit of the chili sauce (sambal). The thousand layer pancake was good if you dip it in the black vinegar (mixed with chili oil and a little soy sauce). The shrimp wonton were surprisingly light and tasty. The dan dan noodles was balanced my medium thin sliced cucumber. Everything was portioned very small so you can try everything.we didnt get additional sides because were getting full. The desserts was what I was looking forward to and it did not disappoint. The hakka mochi reminded me of the soy pudding stalls in singapore that had mochi balls filled with a black sesame paste and peanut paste inside. This is what the hakka mochi was but in dry soft chewy form with black sesame and peanut grains to top it off. For my sister, it reminded her of the filipino dessert pichi pichi. The forbidden rice pudding reminded me of a soupy version of the filipino dessert biko. It had chunks of sweet potatoes and tapioca. Also very good but my bias is the hakka mochi. The ambiance was bright, bustling and inviting. Very small tables perfect for a quick bite. Highly recommend if you want a tapas style lunch that doesn't break the bank.
Joy has given us so much... JOY! This place is super cute to begin with. We had such a great experience, and being our first time, we ordered items that were highly recommended by their staff and enjoyed every single item. From the Dan Dan noodles to the pancake with eggs & cheese, pork belly bun and rice pudding for dessert, everything was delicious! Their food is also reasonably priced so you can pretty much try everything without breaking the bank. We will definitely be back for more! Quick tip: there's street parking and a public parking lot about a block away. Happy eating!
I LOVE SOUP!!! so this place can get very crowded very fast . luckily the employees have a good system of getting people in and out smoothly. go in and order at the counter and get your number, they will call your number once a table has opened up. i ordered the pork bun and wonton noodle soup and they were both sooooo good. bun nice and chewy and pork had a good flavor. the soup was delicious and the wontons are enormous lol. fyi all the wontons here are shrimp so be careful if u are allergic. i had the milk tea to drink too and it was good, not too sweet. overall very happy!!! i definitely want to come again
Big fan of Taiwanese food growing up, and this place did not disappoint. From the merch to the wooden Chinese menu, the atmosphere feels intentional and distinct. We went early on a Friday evening and it was already filling up. The line moved quickly, and so did the food. A friendly cashier and kind staff made the whole experience seamless. We got the Pork Belly Bun to start. Great mix of flavors: sweet and savory pork, with herbs and pickled greens adding a refreshing contrast. The Slack Season Noodles had a rich broth. This would be the pick for savory and hearty broth lovers. If you love peanut flavors then look no further from the Dan Dan Noodles, a nutty, sweet, and thick sauce with herbs and cucumbers to cut through the richness. The Passion Fruit Tea was nice, a little sweet for my taste but that is probably the right way to drink it. I'd love to see a slightly broader menu, but what they do, they do well. Prices feel fair, especially in this economy, and while portions aren't huge, they don't feel skimpy either. A solid spot for a quick, comforting bite.
Joy is one of those neighborhood gems of LA servicing such delicious Taiwanese comfort food. We came on a Sunday evening and the restaurant was pretty busy - the line to order moved quickly, but we ended up waiting outside for a little before a table opened up for us. The space itself is casual and cozy yet trendy. We loved all the dishes we got - everything tasted so yummy, comforting, and clean. - Woodear mushroom appetizer - perfectly seasoned and paired really well with the warm dishes - Hot and sour soup - so hearty and reminded me of my childhood! - Chiayi chicken rice - a comforting chicken over rice dish - Slack season noodles - a simple yet delicious and nostalgic noodle dish with minced pork, garlic, and shrimp - Scallion bread sandwich - their scallion bread is so yummy and fresh! The pork belly was so flavorful too Street parking only. They also have a walk up window on the side of the building for to-go orders.
The food was delicious, which was ordered via UberEats. The Minced pork on rice was delicious, though I wouldn't quite recommend the slack season noodles. I liked the pork used in it(Same as on the first dish), but the noodles and the ramen were pretty bland. All the food was luke warm too. I may have had a better experienced if I had dined in and if I had used some of the available sauces to make this dish more spicy. If in the area, I would probably have the Minced pork or one of their other non-broth dishes again. Upon checking reviews, a lot of reviews stated that parking was a challenge, which is why we had initially decided to have the food delivered to our hotel.
When I'm in need of comfort food, Joy is my go to. My favorites are their wonton noodle soup, beef noodle soup, beef roll, and mapo tofu. Their milk teas and fruit tea are also very very good. Parking can be tough in this neighborhood, and it can also get crowded. But it's worth it. It's lively and vibrant inside, and I've never had issues with service. Their sister restaurant Pine & Crane in DTLA is amazing as well.
Never thought I would actually try this restaurant. I remember my first attempt to try this restaurant (years ago), I got frustrated trying to find a parking. The restaurant itself was also super busy back in the days. I left and never returned. Recently, couldnt decide on where to eat. A suggestion for this place came up. It was on a weekday and the line didnt seem so bad. We were able to find a meter parking close to the restaurant. Ordering process was simple. We ordered the layered pancakes with cheese & eggs, DanDan noodles, hot & sour soup (sm), and a shaken green tea. We then waited for tables to be cleared. The staff guided us to a table. Wait wasn't that long. The egg & cheese layered pancake was yummy. It had some chilies and greens (basils) inside. Looked very simple, but was packed with flavors. I also added a little vinegar to enhance the taste. The DanDan noodles were ok. I think the noodles were a bit too soft. The flavors were good. The amount of sauces were good. A good ratio of everything. It wasnt super creamy like most places. So that was a plus. The hot & sour soup was way too salty. It would have been very good if it wasn't so salty. The shaken tea was surprisingly not bad for the price. RR avail Meter parking Service was alright.
The thousand layer pancake with egg and cheese is a 10/10, full stop. Flaky on the outside, doughy in the middle, with melty cheese throughout -- make sure to get it with chili oil and basil. The pork on rice is another must. Seasoned ground pork over rice -- simple, deeply flavorful and comes with soft boiled eggs. The pork and five spice beef are consistently great across the board -- always tender, always well-seasoned. One caveat: the scallion sandwiches can disappoint because of the dry bread. Ask for the bun instead.

To order TAKEOUT, either order online, call in, or walk around the right corner to order from their little window. You can pick your takeout order up from there too! We didn't know this and waited 20 minutes in line to order at the register because there was a group of 6 and a group of 4 in front of us who all paid separately. I think they shouldn't allow that because it severely slows down the line but I guess college students like paying separately... The pork belly sandwich, wood ear mushroom appetizer, wonton soup and milk tea (Joy Combo) were really good! My noodle soup was pretty good but it only had one shrimp and just a few tiny meat balls. I think the Joy Combo is the best value plus best tasting! read more

Really impressed with this spot! It came highly recommended by one of my friends for its mapo tofu and it lives up to the hype. The Mapo tofu is incredible and not many other places can live up to it! There will likely be a line, but it moves quickly and then you order at the counter and grab a number. It may seem like it's impossible to get a seat, but something always manages to open up! We shared the mapo tofu, the sesame scallion bread, beef roll the pork belly clamshell bao, and the fruit shaved ice. Everything was so good and we all had a great time! Cute little joint in a hipster spot of Silverlake. Pro tip: parking lot just north is cheap! Street parking is all limited to 30 min which is annoying. Joys is counter order and then sit to eat. We had a larger party so we waited (20 deep took about 15 min) outside til they could seat us. Once we got sat the food came rolling out. I did a hot and sour soup which was hot and delicious and spicier than I thought it was going to be but no complaints. Everything had a nice texture. I also got the Dan Dan noodles with chicken. I thought for the upsell price the about of chicken was meh as was the flavor. But the noodle bowl was great. Chewy noods, nice sauce and cold, crispy cucumbers. I also got (I know I know) the shrimp wontons and they came 6 to the bowl. Excellent size with a nice shrimp flavor. The chili oil was hot but not too bad. I did add some soy sauce. My kids got the thousand fold pancake - which in my head was a scallion pancake- but it wasn't. Just a many layered crispy dough but it was good. I thought some salt was needed but I'm a salt over eater. My little one got his with egg and devoured the whole thing. Also got a bowl of the greens and they ended up being boo choy which was cooked nicely and tasted good. In addition we all got drinks and a bottle of wine. It was called Love You Bunches and it was a nice red blend table wine. $36 for a bottle and I think $25 on stores so not bad. Plus it was cold which I love. Over all very good, hot and fresh and would go again. Oh! Pro tip 2- get a bib. The slurpy noods get all over. read more

Nice quick spot that reminds me of a small street side market from Asia. Food was good. Ordered the dandan but wasn't wowed, though noodles were cooked perfectly. It was just a little too wet and not flavorful enough. But the true star, I think, were the sides. We got lotus roots and the woodear mushroom salad. Those were so good. Perfect texture, perfect crunch and nice level of heat for the lotus roots. Meanwhile the mushrooms were nice and soft and chewy and just so flavorful. Service was attentive and kind. Also ordered one of the wraps. Not too bad but nothing special either. Anyway, I'd definitely come back. read more

Loved the ambiance of Joy. Is it the best Asian food I've had? No (I live in Rowland heights) but i love how lively and hip this place is. And the food is good, don't get me wrong! We got the dan dan noodles, thousand layer pancake w egg, pork belly bun, and veggies. Loved all but the thousand layer pancake was a bit too thick and hard to chew for my liking. Everything else was spot on & id order again in a heartbeat! I also loved their sesame/peanut mochi dessert! And also loved that they had sake! read more

Best if eating early! Came in before 6pm and beat a huge crowd that came in after I ordered and sat down. Love the hip vibe and delicious food. I feel less stressed out eating here than at Pine & Crane for some reason. Dan Dan noodles, minced pork rice and crushed cucumber salad were my favorites! Must try items for sure. The plain thousand layer pancake has no flavor at all so I dipped it in a 2/3 vinegar + 1/3 soy sauce mixture. I kinda hoped I could eat the pancake as is but it needs some butter, salt or green onions even. Chiayi chicken dish is quite plain too so you may need to mix other sauces in or order this for kids who don't like heavy flavors. Might also be good for a hangover since it tastes like a plain chicken porridge. Awesome pickled radish on the side for that dish though. Classic and fun Asian drinks in the fridge cooler located by the cashier. Choose from apple sidra, hey song sarsaparilla, calpico etc. water and additional plates, bowls are self serve. I've eaten here once and gotten delivery several times... it's sooo good!! The food is absolutely delicious. Love to order any/all of the thousand layer pancakes (especially the egg and cheese)! The Dan Dan noodles are also a must have... so perfectly saucy and savory!! Their cold salad appetizers are great... love the smashed cucumbers, woodear mushrooms, and black pepper edamame. Also highly recommend the simple greens... they're perfectly cooked and are just so garlicky and delicious. I don't think you can go wrong ordering anything really! The space is super cute. It can get pretty busy, you order at the counter and then find seating. It's nice though as there's bar seating that can fit quite a few. Parking on York is always a challenge, but eventually you'll find a spot somewhere in the surrounding neighborhood. It's a great place for a walk to the restaurant as everything is pretty cute. read more

Overall joy is a very chill spot with good quality Chinese food! It's right by occidental college as most of their customers are on the younger size. It seems like a very typical cafe-like place you would see in a movie setting haha. As for their food, it's pretty decent considering there aren't too many Chinese food options in the area. I got the minced pork over rice and it was delicious! They also are known for their thousand layer pancake which tastes really good with the sauce from the Dan Dan noodles. The prices at joy are pretty reasonable as well and they give you decent portion sizes. read more
Honestly I was coming in here expecting it to be just Americanized Chinese Food that catered to the white people that never had good chinese food before... Upon walking in I really liked the layout of the restaurant. It gave me a hip, cozy, relaxing feeling as it was so spacious too. The lighting in here is just right, the tables are made of wood with small metal sheet pans holding sauces. The design was straight forward and simple which is great since a lot of restaurants are trying to be flashy nowadays. As a ABC(American born chinese) I was so shocked because the food here is amazing! The service was fast, friendly and my gosh all the workers here are attractive! I got the Joy Combo for $16 which comes with -cold appetizer -cup of soup -scallion bread sandwich -shaken ice tea (I was told by a friend you can upgrade your drink to something else and you just pay the difference but I'm not sure?) Smashed Cucumber 3/5 I prefer the more traditional cucumber salad which is on the sweeter side with more sesame oil. This was more on the sour side. It was still good but it just needed to be sweeter in my opinion. Hot & Sour Soup 5/5 Honestly this is probably one of the best hot and sour soups I had portion wise. They hooked it up fat and stacked that hot and sour soup with hella toppings! It isn't the best one I've had but the portions definitely gave it a +1. Scallion Bread With Five Spice Beef 4/5 That bread and sesame was pretty on point. It's not as greasy as the traditional Taiwanese ones but I think it tastes better personally. The beef to me was a little on the dry side but it was flavorful. Man.. they were so generous with the portions here.. they gave so much beef I couldn't even bite into it without the meat falling out. It was f*cking great! I normally don't curse in reviews but god dam!! I don't think this restaurant strives to make food as authentic as possible but that's what makes it great. I'd say it's really close to authentic but what really is "authentic" when you have a lot of fusion food pushing the culinary boundaries with food pairings you don't expect to taste good but it somehow does. Review is for takeout only Joy is ALWAYS packed every time I'm in the area so I had to check it out. Ordered the Chiayi chicken rice and minced pork on rice for $9 each. Both rice dishes are filling. The chicken rice is subtle and the pork rice is savory and flavorful. If I had to pick one, I'd order the pork rice again. Can't wait to try the other dishes like the noodles and desserts. read more

I was very pleasantly surprised with my experience at Joy. As someone from the 626 area which has lots of authentic, hole in the wall Chinese/Taiwanese spots, I at first did not know how I would feel about Joy. However, the authenticity of the Taiwanese food was immediately tasted upon first bite. My favorite dishes were the scallion pancake dish and the dan dan noodles. The quality and the flavors were so evident and the flavors fused beautifully to create a delicious dish. I highly recommend getting all the toppings in the scallion dish as it all paired so well together! Tucked in a corner in Highland Park, Joy adds so much character into a bustling LA city that adds a great spot for Taiwanese food with a twist. Great spot to come with friends or family, and love the interior vibe of the restaurant. Definitely will come back! read more

I had my doubts when it came to Joy. There's no denying that San Gabriel Valley (SGV) is where you want to go for authentic Asian food. So when I saw there was a highly rated Taiwanese restaurant NOT in SGV, I was hesitant. I had bookmarked Joy for awhile now due to all the rave reviews from another social media networking site. I am a huge (Hakka) mochi fan. Yes, you can get them from Chinese markets. But having it freshly made is (taste bud) life-changing. And seeing that I had just finished some amazing tacos just a mile away and was Yelping for dessert, it was time to see if Joy lived up to the hype. Upon arrival, seeing the furnishing, staff, and clientele definitely did not ease my skepticism. Typically an authentic Taiwanese place can be found in some strip mall plaza with some average décor. Joy had a very contemporary feel. It even had bar seating. The line was to the door even though it was past the lunch time rush. However, the line moved quickly. We placed our order and then was shown to table. HAKKA MOCHI - A must get. The plate looks small but do not let it fool you. Underneath the peanut and black sesame awaits some of the most perfect, fresh mochi I have ever tasted. One thing I love about the toppings is that it's not only sweet, but the slight saltiness that surprisingly enhances its counterpart. Do note that this needs to be consumed ASAP; not good for the next day. It was also very nice of the staff to serve us complementary Chrysanthemum tea to go with our mochi. TRADITIONAL SHAVED ICE - A must get. But do no attempt to eat this by yourself. There was 3 of us and we struggle to finish it. The grass jelly is made in house and it is so soft! (I am also a big grass jelly fan.) Their sweet potato / taro balls are so fresh as well. Honestly the toppings here are better than Meet Fresh. The only thing I wish was the ice was a bit finer. Please note this dessert is very sweet so perfect for those hot summer days and/or those with a sweet tooth. It is very rare for me to give out 5-stars when it comes to Yelp reviews but this place does live up to all its stars. The prices were shockingly affordable; some items even cheaper than in SGV. Looking forward to coming back and trying some of their other menu items if I am ever in the neighborhood! read more

Joy was such a vibe! Came here with friends around 5pm on a Wednesday. It wasn't busy initially but became busy as the sun set! During the night time, they dimmed the lights and I really enjoyed the dimmer but vibrant ambience. You order and pay first and then sit down! The worker who took our order made sure we knew where to get our water/utensils/plates as those are self-serve. The three of us shared the dan-dan noodles, shrimp wontons, and minced pork on rice. If you prefer ordering family-style and sharing, this was enough food for the three of us because we weren't super hungry. My personal favorite was the dan-dan noodles. The noodles were chewy and soft, better than Pine and Crane's in my opinion! The shrimp wontons were a good dupe for the infamous Din Tai Fung shrimp wontons as they were soaked in a chili oil sauce. I wasn't a huge fan of the minced pork on rice because I don't love five spice powder however, Joy made a simple dish so flavorful! I was surprised how good Joy was! We had tons of food and the price wasn't terrible for LA. Would recommend for those around the area. What we ordered: - Dan Dan Noodles: This was the best thing I ate here. It was insanely tasty, the noodles were the perfect texture, and the cucumbers were a great, fresh touch. It had the perfect amount of garlic too. Highly recommend ordering. - Minced Pork Over Rice: Also yummy. It was on the sweeter side for me, but overall tasty. - Mapo Tofu: Surprisingly had a kick to it, which I enjoyed. Paired well with everything. - Traditional Shaved Ice: Worth getting as a dessert! It's huge so just be aware. So it was so worth the price. Not overly sweet and had the right amount of everything. Service was great! What a great find! We accidentally found this place while were disappointed from another nearby spot. It was close to 10pm on a Friday night, even though it was almost their closing time we decided to give it a try. The lady taking orders welcomed us with a warm and smily face and said they are still able to serve us. We ordered a couple of items to share and enjoyed every single one of them. Joy is a modern eatery in Highland Park that brings a new twist to Taiwanese food that's surprising suited for both traditional Asian and American palates. I ordered the minced pork rice, which was delicious -- especially the marinated egg that came with it -- and just a touch salty. I love that the unsweetened green tea and seasonal mochi soup were a little lighter, balancing the punchier flavors of the entree. My absolute favorite dish was the wood ear mushroom salad. It's a great combination of fun texture, great flavor, and refreshing. This alone would deserve 5 stars -- and I would love to try the lotus root salad too! The scallion bread sandwich was also good, but while the bread was excellent, the bean curd was quite salty. Overall, Joy is a unique spot with homey vibes (I love the jelly cans holding the chopsticks!) and super friendly service. Definitely worth checking out. read more

Joy is one of my favorite restaurants in Eagle Rock. The thousand layer pancake is by far my favorite item on their menu. I usually get it with everything and all of the flavors compliment each other so well. I also am a fan of the dan dan noodles (which are peanut noodles but they are always more garlicky than I expect--which is a good thing). Most of the dishes here are excellent, you can't go wrong. The service--despite how crowded it gets--is very friendly and efficient. You order your food before you sit down, and there is often not a table when it is crowded but I've never had to wait too long. The ambiance is very nice. A perfect mix between casual and a more restaurant-y place! read more

Where can park our car?
Street parking is relatively easy. There are also a couple of city lots in the area.
Is this place ESA/Dog friendly? I know outdoor seating is not available
There are no animals allowed inside except for registered service animals.
Is there outside seating?
There is no outside table seating or service. A little bench/planter, but no real tables. if you want to sit outside, get your food to go - it's more comfortable walking a block to York Park (Avenue 50)
Is the rice pudding supposed to taste like bacon (smoky)?
There was an item missing from our order and we tried to call and can't get a hold of anyone, how do I get this aside from going all the way back?

Do you use MSG? Have an allergy and feeling a little dizzy (have migraines + msg allergy) but the food was delicious so no complaints here, just wondering what, if anything, should be avoided next time while ordering. Thanks
Most if not all Chinese restaurants use MSG
Do the shrimp wontons have pork in them?
The wonton soup=yes, the spicy shimp wontons=no.
Where could you park?
You can probably park at the post office parking lot after they close for the day
What are the Christmas and Christmas Eve hours?
Closed Christmas Eve 12/24 and Christmas Day 12/25; and New Year's Eve.
Does Joy use MSG? (I read one Yelp Review mentioning that they noticed MSG, and I was wondering if anyone else could comment on whether it's used here.) Thanks!
I don't know. I don't think so. MSG IS AWESOME
Is this place dog friendly?
I didn't see any dogs there and there is no outdoor eating area, so I'm gonna say no to dog friendly.
How well would someone gluten free do here?
My Mom is gluten free and she totally enjoyed all the many gluten free dishes. The menu is online check it out for yourself. Enjoy your meal if you end up going!!
Good Morning! Any specials for someone's birthday?
I don't think so. Since it's such an informal/casual dining experience I don't think they would do anything special. But, it doesn't hurt to ask; maybe they'll give you some of those amazing polvorones.
Does Joy have brown rice as an option?
Yes Joy gives you a choice of white or brown rice
Are any of the vegetarian options not spicy?
Braised bean curd & mushroom sandwich!
