I know there aren't any rules on how to make tostilocos but these seemed a little dry and I felt like there wasn't enough chips. The fruit chunks were pretty big and annoying to deal with (The tostilocos I'm used to have smaller pieces of fruit) and I was kind of disappointed that they didn't have a Chaca Chaca (the Mexican tamarind candy) in it. I tried the first two tortas on the menu for breakfast this weekend (Cuban and Hawaiian) and it made for a great rest of the day. Sandwiches, man...what could be better? A little toasted heat, a few condiments, some crispy shreds of lettuce, juicy tomato slices, the Hawaiian had some slices of ham in it and pineapple! The Cuban had some hotdog spears and melted cheese in it, made me want to smack a pigs rump. Now I'm aware that Hawaii is steeped in beautiful Polynesian culture, seafaring and worship of the deep, and I was expecting at least a bit of seared Spam or something, but don't go looking for connotations of Treasure Island here, it's just a sandwich. I've been here twice so far. I love the service. Even though I speak no Spanish, I have felt so welcomed here. Everyone is so nice. No worries if you don't speak Spanish though, because the cashiers speak fluent English. So ordering is a breeze. The first time I came (a month ago), I had a torta and a juice. Their menu is so extensive that I didn't quite know what juice to order. The helpful cashier asked me what I felt like. I said something tropical. He said ok and I I just left it up to the powers that be. When I got the order, I thought the torta was quite good but was a little underwhelmed by the juice. It wasn't as flavorful as I expected. I heard great things about their super green juice and so I went there a few days ago to give that a shot. I bought one for the hubby too to get his opinion. We were both sort of put off by the flavor. It tasted like celery. Too much celery. We help drinking it, hoping the flavor would somehow get better. It didn't. Either I'm picking the wrong juices or my palate just isn't well-suited for the juices here. I must be missing something? I have my usual resources for discovering great little restaurants, as I'm sure many of you guys do, but sometimes great little spots get overlooked. For example, I only found one of my favorite Chinese restaurant because it is next door to a super popular restaurant with an insane line that I had no interest in waiting in. I found Jugos Aztecas in a similar fashion. Two friends and I were craving huaraches but the wait there was too long. We scanned the block and upon learning this place served food in addition to juice, ended up here. We ordered two tortas (pollo y milanesa), one super green juice, and two tropical fruit salads with chili and lime. The tortas are an INSANE value. They were under $4 each and would have made a filling lunch by themselves. They came with a plate of jalapenos (grilled and pickled), lime, and a red salsa, which was divine. The bread they use for the tortas is fresh and of a higher quality than I was expecting. I prefered the chicken to the milanesa, but both were quite good. The super green juice comes with a long list of fruits and vegetables. I think the list includes either broccoli or spinach, both of which I usually avoid in juices (especially broccoli) because the flavors are too strong, but this juice was actually really mild and refreshing. It tasted mostly like cucumber but was surprisingly filling. The mixed fruit salads were good, although they had run out of mango so we had to substitute in pineapple. When we left, one of my friends (who takes issue whenever I give restaurants a lower rating) turned to me and pointedly asked, "So you're going to give them 5 stars right?" Me and the goons come here on days like today ... when it's 95 degrees or hotter Jugos Azteca is the best spot to go and cool out. The drinks are all made with fresh fruit and never come from a can. They have sodas bottled in Mexico here which is a plus for some people (like me) the homemade cheesecake is amazing and the other homemade deserts they have there are also worth a try. The bionico is made with apples, starwberries, pears, bananas, cantelope, topped off with yogurt, granola, coconut, and raisins. The fruit was just right. Ripe and sweet. They are open later than the other fruit place so that's a plus.
