The sponge cakes here are the best! It's extremely affordable to load up on bakery items here and the atmosphere is very chill. This day I grabbed the original and it's so fluffy, eggy, and has such a nice spongy interior. If you want more of the different assorted flavors of cakes go earlier in the day and bring cash. read more

Very unassuming place. I thought I was in the wrong place when I first walked in because you go through 2 doors and when you look inside it doesn't look much of anything like a bakery. There is some seating and the counter area is filled with signs. The sponge cakes are not displayed so it's hard to see what they have unless you ask via the signage they have. read more

My favorite sponge cake spot in NYC. Love coming by here to see the variety of sponge cakes they have to offer and for a $1.25 each, these cakes simply do not miss. I first came by here for a yelp elite event, but I have found myself stopping by every time I find myself in chinatown or on canal street. Love to pick up a bag of 5-10 sponge cakes. They all are ready made in the morning, so its very easy to pick up. Within 10 seconds all the cakes are ready to go for you as you request. Each day has a new set of flavors (some base flavors). There is also a few milk tea drinks that are also solid, but slightly on the pricier end. There are a few tables to sit down and enjoy, and the vibes are nice, but its very easy to just pick up your cakes and head out within seconds. There is no outdoor seating. and I want to remind you to bring cash, there is an extra charge if you pay with card (but its still an option). The cakes are all great, and the subtlety in which the flavors are added is a really nice touch. If you are looking for a nice, cheap bakery item, sponge cakes from Kam Hing are on the top of my list. read more

I love this place!!! The buns are so light and perfectly fluffy! We got an original, a pandan, and an ube flavored bun and even though there were three of us, I ate most of all of them because they were so tasty! We also got a Vietnamese coffee which was perfect! This place is cash only and started getting crowded as we left but we were lucky enough to snag a table while eating our buns! read more

Found this place on yelp, and needed some souvenirs to bring back home. A bit hard to find, but once you find it--you can't miss it. Small bakery, super fast and easy to order. You look at the sign, pick the flavors you want, and go. Everything was super cheap and their pastries were delicious. Our friend who is from NY was so happy to receive this. read more

This Sponge Cake cafe is a bit out of the way from main Chinatown, but it's well worth the visit! Their fresh sponge cakes come in original ($1), or a variety of flavors ($1.25) such as Ube, Green Tea, Strawberry, Chocolate Chip, and Coconut. My personal favorites are the original, ube, and green tea (you can really taste the tea!). They also serve some drinks if you need something to wash down the cakes. There's some seating inside, but it's mostly a takeout spot. The people working there are really friendly. 100% worth stopping by! Bring cash! read more

This mom and pop shop in Chinatown specializes in spongecakes. They sell for $1 for original or $1.25 each for a flavored one. The flavors vary each day, but they have plenty of options to choose from. I opted for the original, green tea, pandan, and ube. We also got a medium iced coffee for $4.50, which was rather pricey though. The spongecakes are mini (about 4 inches long), but great for only $1.25. These are great on the go snacks, which are light and airy yet filling. My only fault is that I found that the flavors were lacking, so they all tasted the same to me. In such case, I'd just stick to the original since the flavors were undetectable. They store well for the week, so get a bunch to have for the rest of the week. read more

Perfect spot a block away from lafayette 260 sample sale to stop by before joining your spot in line Tried the pandan, chocolate chip and original sponge cakes! Simple, cheap, and the right homeland. There's nothing I love more than a hole in the wall spot that sticks to what it knows and isn't trying to be something else. Staff is friendly, you can see the kitchen from the counter and plenty of 2-4 tops for customers to sit and enjoy. No frills, a little Chinese drama on the TV and just a handful of cake delight! Dropped by for a quick morning pick me up at a little over $1 per sponge cake with standard home style flavors plus bonus ones like ube, coconut, black sesame etc. Enjoyed a hot milk tea and my sister had the iced, both perfection and paired harmonious with the fluffy treat of a sponge cake. Besides the original we got the black sesame and ube. Black sesame wasn't my favorite personally more just a preference thing of having seeds inside I think it ruins it for me- but tasted great. Always amazing sponge cakes. My favorite is the original and will always be because of the eggy goodness. Today, l've decided to expand my horizon and try another flavor, strawberry, pandan and ube. They're all great! All soft, tasty and fragrant! The flavors are different daily and sometimes they sell out early. The service was friendly and quick. The shop has seatings with air conditioning! A nice local bakery that sells Asian pastries especially with the sponge cakes that are a big hit! You have to find the right time to make sure the best selling flavors are not sold out. I got chocolate chip, sesame, and original and they tasted so fresh. Sesame has lots of sesame seeds making it crunchy. They also sell cheap drinks like chrysanthemum and Hong Kong milk tea for a decent price that you cannot beat anywhere else! Going to come here more often to get my flavored sponge cakes and drinks. My trip to Chinatown never ends without a visit to Kam Hing. The store, has a dingy appearance in the beginning but has a very vintage , retro touch to it! This place is super famous for their sponge cakes. My personal favorites are: Classic Ube Chocolate chip BEWARE: They run out of these cakes early. I would recommend you to call and ask them to hold them for you before visiting. The cakes are really spongy but does have a heavy hint of eggs to it. I loved the Ube and classic ones. Guess what, they're just a $ each! You also get rare drink like Horlicks sold over here. Wanna try the other dishes soon! read more

A surprise on Baxter Street... Chinatown can be overwhelming, and this small Sponge Cake cafe is on a quiet street that is easy to overlook. Luckily we were in the area for a separate yelp event and spotted a sign declaring itself to have the best sponge cake in town. The service was efficient and very friendly. You'll probably get a kick at the decorations, posters, drawings hung up on the wall, and the interior ambience has a lot of personality that I wouldn't have expected! We got their original sponge cake and thai coffee, which were both delightful and the total came out to ~$5. The sponge cake was very light and fluffy and not too sweet. The thai coffee had a fudgy quality and was also lightly sweetened and very refreshing. I'm really glad we found this spot! They have a surprisingly large drinks menu and everything felt super fairly priced. There were a decent number of people passing through as well, so this is a not so hidden gem it seems :) read more

Chinese bakery specializing in zhi bao dan ghao, aka Chinese sponge cakes. They cost just $1.25, come in a variety of flavors, and are incredibly delicious. Kam Hing Bakery is a Manhattan Chinatown icon, serving perfect sponge cakes for over 40 years now. They have been family owned for 3 generations. The interior is quirky and homey, with eclectic decor and harsh yet friendly vibes. I tried their Green Tea, Chocolate Chip, Ube, and Original sponge cakes, all of which were exceptional. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the Green Tea, which tasted like ceremonial grade matcha. The texture of the cakes reminded me of castella, but even softer. The woman working was polite, and suggested their Viet Coffee, which was sweet, creamy, and strong. 10/10. read more

Cannot beat the price point here. Got a sponge and a tea for $2. I'm used to Passover sponge cake but this one was more eggy, and very fluffy. I was in Chinatown last Saturday with my daughter in law in search of sponge cake. We had been to a very adorable sponge cake cafe across the street, but were tipped off through YELP to head to Kam Hing first this time. We found Kam Hing easily enough, it seemed like an older establishment. There were two disgruntled looking cops at one table eating sponge cakes, but otherwise, everyone else looked happy and to be really enjoying their snacks and beverages. Once we go to the counter, we found out that they were completely out of flavored sponge cakes, but had plenty of the plain/classic flavor. We were bummed, but flexible and ordered two plain and an iced tea. The very nice guy behind the counter asked if we wanted out sponge cakes hot and fresh out of the oven, we said sure and OMG, neither one of us had ever had sponge cake this good, it was like we were floating on the ceiling, it was that good. A complete revelation. I ended up buying two boxes of 12 to take back home to share. I've been passing them out the last few days and people CANNOT get over how fantastic these sponge cakes are. read more

Kam Hing is the OG sponge cake bakery in Manhattan Chinatown. There is cake, tea, coffee, and zero ambiance. Prices are affordable, service is counter only, and tables are sticky. But you're here for cake! They have developed a dozen flavors of cake in recent years, from coconut, green tea, chocolate, taro, and a bunch more. So while it's not pretty, I am still very fond of getting a little something sweet (but not too sweet!) when I'm done with my grocery shopping in the hood. read more

This place is known for their sponge cakes and totally worth the stop especially since it's so close to the subway stations. They have lots of flavors to choose from and their sponge cakes are really fluffy and very reasonably priced. The flavors come across well and are surprisingly not too sweet at all. I also ordered a vietnamese coffee, which was pretty cheap for how large the cup was. We ordered an original, ube, and pandan and they were all delicious! I've visited Kam Hing Bakery in Chinatown multiple times, and it's become a favorite of mine, thanks to Yelp. Their sponge cakes are amazing, with lots of flavors to choose from. However, they often sell out by the evening, so I usually end up with the original flavor, which is still delicious. On my last visit, I also enjoyed an Ovaltine. When we asked the owner about the best time to come for more flavor options, she kindly offered to hold specific flavors for us if we called ahead. Came here after seeing the signs of best sponge cake in town and decided to give a try. Walking in you have to go straight past the door and will see the shop (with another door). Sponge Cakes: The sponge cakes are $1.00 for the original and $1.25 for flavoured sponge cakes (such as pandan, ube, coconut and more). The sponge cakes are freshly made and a good snack size. This is a hole in the wall bakery in Chinatown that specializes in sponge cakes. Each pound cake is less than $2! We tried a few of the flavors, but our favorites were the original and the pandan. The original was fresh out of the oven, so it was warm and eggy. The pandan tasted like a light vanilla flavor. Don't be turned off by its bright green color! The service was really friendly. I ordered 4 different treats to go and they're packed in small box individually. Unfortunately, they didn't quite stay intact during my trek back to my hotel and were tumbled around in the boxes. Nonetheless, the taste and flavors held up well and even after a few days in the fridge. The yuzu daisy has this vivid pastel yellow-pink base and adorable gelatinous yellow gem atop a white flower. The yuzu gives a subtle infusion of tart that is balanced out by the light delicate skin texture of the rest. Sitting atop a thin round rice crispy. I loved the red mushroom one which is a creamy pink mousse inside the cap. The stalk is a thin porcelain-white chocolate light base also filled with a rich cream. Adjacent are two cute little tree nuts. The orange and mango have such vivid colors and are aesthetically pleasing too. Just like the previous ones, their delicate chocolate exterior houses a rich tarty mousse-y filling. I think the mushroom has a better balance and variety of flavors. Although I don't eat mousse treats often, I look forward to trying some of the other ones in the future, like the blueberry, banana and cloud.

Today I decided to make a special trip to go here to grab a few goodies. I forgot how small the place was and how low the ceilings were. That wasn't an issue though. The place was nice and cakes were stacked neatly. What was surprising to me is that they don't have any cookies laid in the front display. It's all placed in the back almost hidden. I was deeply disappointed with their cookie selection. It was deeply surprising that they don't sell the butter cookies that had jam in the middle and dipped with chocolate on one side with sprinkles. I did ask the clerk and even showed him a pic of what I was looking for and he said they never sold them. They only had the linzer cookies and they didn't look so good. They also did not have the lobster tail. They did have the sfogliatelle which they also called a lobster tail. I thought they were not the same? Some bakeries sell both and they are definitely not the same. I did end up buying one of their sfogliatelle with cream and some rugelachs. The sfogliatelle was good but the rugelachs tasted slightly underbaked. It did taste fresh though unlike many I've had in other bakeries. However, for $28 per pound, I wouldn't get it again. For those not having lobster tail and not having the Italian cookies, I will have to give Veniero's a low rating. I never thought an Italian bakery would not carry staples. Very disappointed. I need to find another Italian bakery now.

Coming from Vancouver, my expectations for Chinese food are high... but this 40+ year-old legacy spot completely stole my heart. First stop on the New York Chinatown crawl was Kam Hing. Family-owned since 1984, they are famous for their viral sponge cakes--but it's the family itself and their genuine warmth that makes this place so special. It was filled with lots of locals, and the space is surprisingly spacious, warm, and inviting. It honestly feels just like going over to your auntie's house for a cozy visit. I tried to tip on my card and they gently refused. Then, while sitting there enjoying my food, I overheard another customer who was short on cash, and the staff just smiled and said, "No worries." That kind of pure community heart is so rare these days. Original Sponge Cake ($1.25): Pure perfection. It was incredibly fluffy, cloud-like, and hit that ultimate Asian-dessert benchmark of being "not too sweet." At $1.25, it's an absolute steal. Thai Tea & Green Thai Tea: Rich, refreshing, and paired beautifully with the light texture of the cakes. Bottom line: Please support legacy businesses like Kam Hing! I read about this place on Yelp and knew I had to try it! And then of course I promptly forgot about it. Until today, when I was walking along Canal street and got that feeling that there was something Very Important I HAD To Remember. I couldn't recall the address so I just started looking around everywhere and then I saw that tiny sign that some Yelper kindly posted here. When I saw the line at the door I knew I was at the right place. There were even Japanese tourists because some Japanese magazine had reviewed it. Those Japanese reporters knew what they were doing because the sponge cake, given to me piping hot, was delicious! It reminds me of a sweet yorkshire pudding and of very fluffy pancake, but the texture is finer, quite moist at the very center, fluffy around that, and chewy and almost crispy on top. We walked across the street and ate them on the spot. I wish I got extra to take home. We got iced coffee, with milk and a little sugar as suggested, and it was also very good and only $1.25.
