Chicken pad thai & chicken satays are my go to order every single time, & the Pad Thai dishes are big enough for 2 people (but I have eaten them in one sitting, or saved for leftovers since it tastes just as good the next day!) I have had quite a few people say they don't like this place. I don't know because I never stray from my staples and have never been disappointed. I will say that you need to set aside some time to eat here (or order takeout) because the service can be SLOOOOOOW. It's pleasant service, but they seem to move the speed of frozen molasses at times. Ok. Food. I went with my mom and brother to enjoy a little family meal. We decided to go with the spicy beef salad, chicken pad thai, and Karuna's fried rice. The spicy beef salad is always refreshing! Mint, cucumber, tomato, red onion, and thinly sliced beef. I was unsure of this the first time I ordered it some years ago, but have gotten it every single time since. It is a nice light start to the meal. The chicken pad thai is nothing monumental. It is pretty standard, but still delicious. Karuna's fried rice? My absolute favorite. I cannot speak to how traditionally Thai it is, but I don't think I care. It has bacon! Bacon! We ordered take out the other night, and the food was good, but the people running the place were slightly rude, and made me feel like I had to rush with questions and ordering. We ordered Green Curry (Mild) and I would say the spice was a 6 out of 10, so more on the Medium side of flavor. It was good, but chicken in it was poor quality. We also ordered Pad Thai and it was so,so. I probably wouldn't order that dish again. The curry was the better of the two. Prices are decent, food is decent, service is shit. So, I will not be going in to dine, but I would order take out again and try another curry or perhaps a different noodle dish. It is close to my residence and coming from Southern California the options for Thai are slim to none. . . read more

We were over joyed when Karuna's reopened after their building was damaged by a truck. Don't get me wrong, there are loads of places in Tucson where you can get Thai. We tried a few while Karuna's was closed and none compare. Karuna's is the only one we have found that REALLY makes your dish "Thai Hot". They use fresh ingredients and I am thinking they use fresh chilis or whatever chili they are using is crazy delicious. It isn't that dried chili pod or flake, that has no flavor you find thrown into quick dishes when you ask for it to be hot! You have to try their #43 Thai hot, you will not be disappointed, unless you can't stand the heat. If that is the case, go with mild you will still get heat. read more

Karuna's is a small comfy joint almost hidden from view on grant, with absurdly limited parking but decently flavorful Thai food. I'm not an expert at Thai food by any means, but I personally had no problems with how the food tasted. I ordered the green curry with tofu (very spicy spice level), and my friend ordered a red curry with chicken (mild spice level). They offer only a couple spice levels: mild or spicy. The green curry had a rich coconut flavor, along with the various vegetables and fried tofu to boast. I think the curry was a little thin to my liking. The main issue I had with Karuna's besides the parking was the extremely slow service. I understand it must be tough with one waitress working, but from watching how she handled our table as well as the other customers, it seemed like she was unable to multitask and manage multiple tables at the same time, leaving many customers waiting for 15+ minutes to just take their order. And keep in mind this was at 5pm, their opening time, on a Sunday... theoretically not their busiest customer rush. All in all, it's pretty decent Thai food, and probably one of the better spots you'll find in Tucson. Oh and tip: if you want more rice than what they give you, it is extra... $2.50 for another bowl. read more

The tom kha was amazing ~ generous amounts of mushrooms and other delicious veggies and great tofu floating in a rich coconut broth with bay leaves, galangal, and lemon grass. I also got a massaman curry and it was pretty good, nothing special. The peanuts were toasted though which is a nice touch. However they need to have more servers! The one lady working the front, tables, phone, and giving orders to the kitchen seemed super over worked both times I've been there. Just moved to Tucson and saw this place, the reviews made it seem good but was very disappointed with my experience. Got completely raw chicken and heard the waitress talking bad about me when I asked for it to be taken off the bill as I could not eat it after I bit into a completely pink piece of chicken. She refused to take it off and was very rude about it because I had eaten two pieces before that one. I had to speak to the owner in order to get it taken care of. Server was not attentive whatsoever, honestly was outright rude. I understand it was busy but as a server you don't take that out on the guests. Tables are so close together you're unable to hear yourself think with all the conversations around you and the AC was set to 80°, so I was sweating profusely as was everyone else until another guest went to turn it down because the waitress would not. I have looked for the last few years since I have been here, trying to find a place that made Pad Se Ew or Pineapple Fried Rice as good as I got in Portland, and finally! We were seated quickly, and the waitress was awesome and soo cute! She made us feel welcome and she was helpful with anything we needed. The Pad Se Ew was not lacking in any way. Plenty of the chicken I ordered for my protein and the flavors blended perfectly. I can say the same about the Pineapple Fried Rice. They had the raisins and cashews and it all worked together perfectly. We have found our new home for Thai food and it helps to ease the homesickness just a bit. read more

Yellow curry and stir fry vegetables with tofu were good; appreciated the spring roll being made when that worker came in. Medium for my curry spiciness was perfect. Thai iced tea. Delicious and hot tea was very hot. Unfortunately all gets lost in the continual wait for food, container to take food home and to pay the bill. Service: uhmmmmm this is me trying to justify the (1 star) service: this is a small Thai family-run business, there is only ONE woman running the cashier/ answering the phone/ taking orders. ONE PERSON! I feel bad for her because it is a cluster f**** running all that by herself... SO expect to wait close to an hour before you get your food (if you dine in for dinner) -during lunch, things run more smoothly because it's mostly self service and the buffet is actually a great deal for about $10. We had the #10 and #54, the duck stew and yellow curry with chicken, both extra spicy. Both were absolutely delicious. Prices were reasonable, portions were generous, and the service was excellent. I was really having a hard time deciding between giving this place a 2 or a 3. The food is actually a 3 to 4 star rating, but the service is a 1 at best. We were served by this elderly lady who was very curt with our party and only seemed to tolerate me. This was because other members of the party were trying to ask questions about what different items were and she refused to answer. I got to explain what a spring roll was. She also forgot about us constantly when it came to bringing plates, refilling drinks, so on and so forth. The food was pretty good. The spring roll was nice and the sauce complemented it well. I got the Gang Ped Phed Yang which was good. The duck wad cooked well and the broth was good. The only thing I would change is that it seemed they put pineapple juice in the broth. I would have just stayed with the chunks of pineapple so it would not change it to and overall inherent sweetness. I very much preferred by boyfriend's dish. He got the Guy Teaw with duck. The duck was roasted beautifully with crispy skin, and the noodles were flavored really well. I would like to come back here for the food, but the service is probably going to keep me from returning soon. read more

Based off the service alone, this place doesn't even deserve a star. Came here on a Tuesday night, and waited 15 min before our server appeared with water and took our order. After waiting 1 hour and seeing several tables seated after us get their food, the server told us our order ticket was lost and asked us to re-order. Having waited so long and seeing the time it took for other tables to get their order, we decided it to leave and not waste another 75 min. Best Papaya Salad I've ever had! Felt adventurous and decided to try the Laos version with salted crab and now I can't go back to the normal som tum.
