When you go to a restaurant -- and they can take a few basic ingredients and come up with distinctly different experiences, you should be impressed with the skill of the chef. This is what happened with me when I chose 3 apple dishes, prepared with cinnamon and could easily distinguish the differences between each one. One of the things that drew me to Katie's kitchen was the enormous menu. The restaurant itself isn't huge and parking can be somewhat difficult. Decor is simple, but sufficient for making me feel homey. Service is fast as well as the speed of the cooking. Prices are reasonable, considering how large portion sizes are -- though the presentation leaves something to be desired. Here are my thoughts on the items I tried: Apple cinnamon cobbler pancake: Giant portion -- Apples are hot but not overcooked. The pancakes are very fluffy with crisp edges and the filling is delicious. There is a nice crunch to the cinnamon sugar which is paired with delicious crispy nuts. Surprisingly, this dish managed to fit in 4 distinct textures at all once. Cinnamon swirl french toast: Nice fluffy french toast with a crisp exterior. The egg flavor was very pronounced in the french toast as well and created an excellent combination with the rich and smooth cream cheese. Fresh baked cinnamon apple waffle: This was a soft waffle, but very flavorful with great aroma and chewiness, almost like a soft fluffy cake. Overall, I enjoyed my visit. It was a nice change from the typical breakfast dishes offered by most of the local restaurants. I do wish though that there was better presentation and that the overall look of the restaurant was updated a bit. The look of the food and decor detract from the experience of well thought out and executed dishes. read more

For me, dining at Katie's Kitchen was long overdue. Years ago, my brother (an Oakton Community College student at the time) would stop by at Katie's Kitchen to eat breakfast or lunch in between classes. He would kindly bring home a sandwich for us to try - more specifically, the Fried Green Tomato Breakfast Sandwich. I distinctively remember biting into it and feeling like my legs went numb because it was phenomenal. Now, finally (after all these years) we finally decided to come in and sit down to have breakfast here. The very first thing I noticed walking in was that you didn't have to wait an absurd amount of time to eat here, unlike the other breakfast spots around the area. Obviously, I loved that but at the same time I believe Katie's Kitchen deserves a line outside that wraps around the block - that's how much I enjoyed the food here. We ordered the following: Brussels Sprout Country Scrambler (October Special) with a side of Sprouted Grain Toast, Santa Fe Chicken Nest, Spinach and Mushroom Feta Cheese Omelette, and a side of Pumpkin Pancakes. When I bit into the Brussel Sprout Country Scramble, I swear I heard colors and saw sounds. There were so many different flavors and textures happening all at once - the slight buttery flavor of the eggs, the saltiness of the pancetta, the sweetness of the potatoes, and the creamy yet perfectly mild Havarti cheese. Granted, I wish there were more Brussel Sprouts on the plate - but that didn't make me enjoy it any less. Now, I don't even know where to begin with the Santa Fe Chicken Nest. The hash browns surrounding the omelette were perfectly crispy - golden brown on the outside with wisps of white still showing on the exterior. The cheddar jack cheese supported the entire meal with a thick delicious, smooth, rich yet tangy taste. All around amazing - you just need to try it. Finally, it wouldn't have been a proper breakfast in October without ordering a side of Pumpkin Pancakes, and they didn't disappoint. I'll be raising my blood pressure like a father watching his 4 year old son play baseball, because I have a feeling I'll be coming here every single week. read more

We just came back from Katie's kitchen. The wait was only a couple minutes but the service was bad. The food was good but it took 20 minutes to get our order another 20 plus minutes to get our food. My husbands order and my pancakes came out. My omelet came 10 minutes later. The weird thing is everyone else around us got their food before us and we were there first. I went to the owners Mom and told her we love your restaurant but the service was bad. Her response was it's not my fault. We are low staffed in the kitchen. I've been here twice for brunch and it was tasty! This time my boyfriend ordered the tuna melt and it was amazing!! I loved it, I wish I ordered it for myself. I came with two guests, and they enjoyed their meals very much. Mine was just okay, so it's important you choose well: The fries- these are VERY good. I would fully recommend trying a dish with fries because they are very very good. My brother described them as five guys fries without as much grease. Very light and crunchy- yum! Reuben- my guest enjoyed their Reuben, it was packed with meat that was described as very tender and moist. Chorizo skillet- 3/5. I was not too crazy about this skillet. The chorizo was very finely ground so it didn't pack as much of a flavor punch as I was hoping. The eggs were well prepared though. Pancakes- the basics were delish. I loved the pancakes and syrup, they were very well prepared and a welcome supplement to my meal. "Pillows"- these are 3 cinnamon puffs served with sauces. These were a slightly small portion for $5 the puffs were also a little more well done than I would've expected, but the sauces were fun and tasty to try. I'm always on the hunt for new delicious breakfast spots. Last night Chicago's Best TV featured just that, Chicagoland's Best Breakfast. After looking at Katie's menu last night online, I knew I had to pay a visit, after checking out the sunrise at the beach in Winnetka, on the 1st day of Autumn. They featured her Huevos Racheros last night. Toasted English muffin, marinated skirt steak, avocado, two poached eggs, ranchero sauce, baked with Cheddar cheese. I'll have to try it my next visit. I went for her Southwest Egg White Scrambler "On The Healthy Side" of her menu. Spicy chicken sausage, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, Mozzarella cheese. Served with choice of toast and fruit or tomato. I asked for the whole egg with sliced tomatoes and dumped the side of black bean and corn salsa atop the tomatoes. The sausage did have a nice little kick. My server Mary is awesome and has been here for 10 of their 11 years they've been open. Definitely a hidden gem in this corner strip mall. Typical breakfast spot. They provide complimentary mini muffins for the table. I ordered an egg white scrambler and they provided a black bean salsa. I thought they confused my order with the Southwestern scrambler but someone else who ordered a different egg white scrambler got it as well. If you like real Mexican food, DO NOT order their Spanish named items or you'll just be disappointed. Their Hispanic food taste like something from Taco Bell. It's very Americanized which is a disgrace to our culture/food. The "enchiladas" are nothing like our real enchiladas. This resto is a to go to brunch haven if you want a delish, healthy food options for brunch. It deserves the 5 stars for the homey, cozy ambience and for being the spotlessly clean place that it is. My husband and I ordered oatmeal with fruits and nuts which is delish. It have a hint of some muscovado sugar like tastiness to it. For drinks we ordered tea ( nicely placed inside the small steel kettle) which is excellently executed with a slice of lemon and honey in a miniature bottle. If you are trying to find a good place to have breakfast/brunch in the Des Plaines area, this is the best place to eat at. Their dishes average about $11-13 and their portions are pretty large so you will almost likely bring some leftovers home! I got the special skillet from the special menu. They put apples in it which is very interesting and also with Brie cheese which was different. I got scrambled eggs on top of my skillet but it's best to get a sunny side up egg to get more of the creamy texture for your skillet. It comes with the choice of pancakes and toast too if you want something sweet to eat. If you want to go for something healthier and sweet, my friend got the oatmeal blackberry Apple pancakes and the texture is similar to a regular pancake but it's a little drier. read more

Oh wow, I had a great experience with this impromptu stop. I was in a hurry so I just asked at the counter for the persons favorites. I didn't take time to decide, just went with the first thing that sounded good in the section she pointed out. It was a steak and portobello dish - I think! The steak here was delicious, cut so easy with the plastic knife, and I would love to know what the marinade is. So very good. The rest of the dish was layered with mushrooms and onions on the bottom, scrambled eggs, and hash-browns on top. So good.
