Listen up, folks, 'cause I'm gonna school ya. It's listed as a Russian restaurant, and according to our dining companion, that's right on the money, not just for the food, but the service. Like no other restaurant I've been to, this place has a protocol. The listing says it closes at 9pm. Ignore that. If you walk in off the street after 6pm you will be turned away, so get there EARLY. Yelp has a photo of the menu online, so use that to figure out what you want to eat before you get there because - get ready for this - they only have one menu. We had five people in our group and needed another chair and place setting, but they didn't seem particularly interested in getting one for us. No problem, we just pulled them from a nearby table. About a third of the menu items we ordered weren't available, so we made alternate choices. They might not have your favorite beverage in stock, so be ready to choose another one. In short - BE FLEXIBLE. The food? It was out of this world. Between us, we ordered the beef, lamb and chicken kabobs, and beef and chicken Lula (it's like a casing-less sausage) that was absolutely delicious. The portions? HUGE. The price? TINY. Like, fourteen bucks (I think) for two huge skewers of meat, plus some sort of pickled persian cucumber and tomato salad that was excellent, and seasoned fried potatoes. Two responsible people could share an entree and not walk away hungry. We started with hummus, Greek salad, cabbage salad and eggplant salad to share between us, and everything tasted fresh and authentic. We walked out of their door feeling as if we'd just come back from a trip to Russia. The language barrier and the all the little caveats make this is a challenging place to eat, but it is SO worth it! If I didn't live halfway around the country I'd tell all my friends about this place, and eat here at least once a month. HIGHLY recommended! read more

The food at this Russian-Armenian-Georgian place is quite good. We had an excellent salad of excellent tomatoes, Persian cucumbers and thinly sliced onions, and a "vinegret", the vibrant purple Russian salad of beets, potatoes and celery mixed with vinaigrette. The khinkali are good but not excellent, and the plate of chicken lula kabob was outstanding, as soft as butter with a little crust on the outside, served with a big helping of "noodle-fied" rice and a big scoop of roasted eggplant salad. The waiter does not speak English. A word here, a word there, but he will ask you if you speak Russian. It will be better if you say "choot-choot" (a little) rather than just saying no. He is a very kind man and wants you to eat well, and he is proud of the food he serves, but he is not confident in his English skills. As others have said, this is Eastern European-style service: you ask for what you want, call out when you need the waiter, and expect to pay for everything (no freebies except the bread on the table). The menu is Russian-style, meaning it's a list of everything they would serve if they had the kitchen space; I asked for mushrooms (grubny salat) and he said they didn't have any (listen for "nyet"). Still, I would come here often if I lived nearby. Two of us stuffed ourselves shamefully (two salads, a kabob plate, four khinkali, and sparkling tarragon lemonade) for $38. Here, then, are at least a few words for you to get past the language barrier. Up to you if you want to try them. The food's worth it. HORRIBLE SERVICE! Came in and asked for the manager because we set up an interview appt and the manager was NO WHERE TO BE FOUND! Some old guy told us the manager was not there and to get out! He was SO rude! And then to top it off he said he was too busy to talk to us so he walked away. Delicious. Came in during lunch while here in LA, as I was craving home food and also wanted to introduce a friend to the cuisine. We did not have too much time, so took most of it to go. In short, the food was delightful, fresh, and with an unmistakable home-made touch. Borsch -- simple, thick, dill-heavy; million ways to make this dish so most important is to NOT mess it up. They don't. Kebabs -- we had a variety -- were all fantastic, wonderfully balanced and melted in your mouth. The real gem, however, was Khinkali -- in total contrast to one review below. Absolutely superb; I wish there was a place in the Bay Area that made it this good. As far as service and how long it takes, etc. You have to have reasonable expectations. This is not a fast food place, and not one of the restaurants where everything is pre-made as much as possible. They actually COOK TO ORDER, if you can imagine that... As such, if you want to be in and out and enjoy hinkali and a kebab in 20 minutes flat, it's not going to happen -- that's not what this place (or cuisine -- or culture, for that matter) is about... Lastly, the owners do speak perfectly adequate English to understand and communicate with anyone ordering from their menu; never mind if you don't speak Russian -- just go in and enjoy the food. This is by far one of my favorite places! I drive from Torrance to LA just to have their amazingly tasty kebabs! First time I came in, I noticed the place was small and it looked like it was operated by 2 people, which accrues to me as married couple. The portions are huge, your choice of kebab plus either fries or rice, and a salad! I come from Russia and this food reminds me of home. About the service, both of them are not very young. The man doesn't really speak English but his lady does, so just be a little patient:) Also try their borsch and sparking lemonade from Russia called "Dushes", it tastes like candy:) anyways, I totally recommend this place, its inexpensive, yummy, and fast! read more

I could give this place a zero star if it were possible. Horrible service by the old guy with the attitude. He gave us a single worn out, oily menu to choose from (one menu for 15 people) but then it turned out that only 3 dishes were available. Why give a menu? Appetizers were very mediocre and they do not know how to cook meat. Lamb shops were greatly overcooked and were hard as a shoe sole and rice was not a nice basmati rice you would expect but a cheap commercial Rice & Roni from the box. Few people did not get their orders because the guy miscalculated the number of orders. Then after most people finished eating, he brought two portions that were missing. After we paid, the owner rudely insisted that he is owned a tip. This lunch was a total disaster! Stay away from this place or you will be as disappointed and frustrated as we all were. read more
