Have been going to this place for some time now, mostly for the weekend halwa puri chole combo. Used to be good! Recently, it's mostly been a miss in terms of flavors. Felt the need to come to Yelp and review it because we found a cockroach rolled into our paratha!! The management has just been off recently. The halwa was not warm in the halwa puri combo. When I pointed that out, the server said that some people like it not to be warm (weird). With the paratha, they gave nothing else - no raita, no pickle, no butter, which they used to earlier. If you ask for it, they'll get you those. And then of course, the cockroach episode was the final nail in the coffin. While the server was very apologetic saying that they do clean their kitchen every evening, I don't think I can ever eat their food again. read more

I'm giving this place a one-star rating because my friend and I showed up for lunch, and there was no one at the cashier's counter. There was a sign asking customers to press a bell when ready, which we did--three times over five minutes. During that time, a kitchen staff member even walked past us, but no one came to take our order. Frustrated, we ended up leaving and going to another restaurant. There are not very many Indian bakeries to be found around Bay Area, let alone something that has food and feel like this place. Essentially this place is an Indian style Café, more of a Chai Café if I may call it that, and a decent one at that. I loved sitting inside as place is clean, there is plenty of sunlight that comes in so it feels open. There is very limited sitting available outside as well, which actually is pretty good to soak up some sun along with your chai if the weather is right. This is the only place I know of that offers some of many varieties of Chai available in India, so if you are a chai lover, this place should be on your list to visit. I tried their cutting chai and Assam Spring Chai. Both were really good. Assam chai particularly was very aromatic and flavorful. As for food and bakery, they have items on their menu which go pretty well with Chai. In bakery, they have pastries, brownies, Indian cookies, cake slices. I had Sliced Bread Omelette, which has egg bhurji and cheese inside a French toast, and toasted coconut cookie, and both were good. Staff is friendly. Service was not perfect, but it wasn't bad either. Prices are good for what you are getting and everything I tried so far tasted good. The Keema and Paratha is wonderful. It's scrambled eggs with ground lamb, and a large plain paratha (flat bread fried with ghee butter) on the side. I also tried the egg bhujia, which is same as above but without the lamb. It's good but not as rich as the Keema, which I highly recommend. The plum cake is also delicious. It has a mild sweet flavor which I loved. The wait to get your food is long (30-40 min) though. read more

Food was good! We ordered a veggie burger, papri chaat, aloo and mooli parathas & fresh carrot juice. Only complaint is that it took a long time for them to get the order. This place was a nice place as it reminded some of home cooked food. However, Service went down, new I believe management or staff are totally new. We came in on a week day Tuesday on a slow time and yet while we waited for our food there were at least three disappointing customers. We just thought they were just having a bad day but when we got our food the stuffed roti was both cold. We ordered Moole paratha and sure enough the food has grated string in the food very bad place became dirty. They need to really step up there game as everything about the place that was good is now Very Bad. Good luck with ordering you food please double check it before eating. read more

Very modern, clean and earthy tones in the whole decoration. Just very pleasant from the outdoors already, it is cozy, airy (not like other Indian tea places or restaurants where you end up smelling too much curry aromas) and friendly service. Only that the young guy taking the orders was also serving and he had too many customers for himself. However he was very upbeat and nice. I loved my masala chai and the samosa. The sauces that came with my samosa were perfect, i wanted more! With my colleague we also had other more mild tea in a big teapot and was delicious. I also ordered another vegetarian pastry and was delish. I enjoyed my time there. I found the prices to be very decent and the cute factor of this place will make me come back more than once. I frequent this place so often, as I stay close to it. This place has a very good ambience. It has a good feel to it, wherein it gives you the cozy, warm feeling for a nice catch up with a friend. People crave for chai with the cookie here.. but I'm not a fan of chai so I've never tried it. What I've tried here - Puff - it's amazing. The best ever puff I've had in Bay Area so far. Tasted very much like what I've had in India Pastries - decent Chowmein - I loved it. Very authentic. But, but, very oily. Both the times I've tried it. Burger - comes with Indian style masala fries. Again, very much like what I've had in India Paratha - I didn't like it much. The stuffing was hardly there in the one I had. I'm writing this review just after a call I had with them. I called them to order choley bhature on a Sunday and the guy said they have Halwa puri choley today. Choley bhature is available only on weekdays. Since I was craving for 'only choley bhature' I replied saying okay then cancel it thanks. And to my surprise the guy just BANGED THE PHONE on me. We absolutely love Kettle'e! We have since moved out of California, but every time we come back, Kettle'e is on our "must eat from" list and always get the bun kabob - delicious! The presentation is perfect as well. The chef KNOWS his/her stuff! CUSTOMER SERVICE: Let's just put it this way, there isn't any. The guy at the counter (when not in the back) is a robot that wasn't programmed to smile or acknowledge your existence. EATING-IN EXPERIENCE: What can I say... so many things going wrong, let's break it up: 1. Tables The tables have the legs on the corners so it's very hard to get in/out. 2. Condiments The presentation of the food is so good that I am perplexed why they couldn't spend some money to get ketchup bottles, napkin holders, salt/pepper shakers for each table. This stuff is stocked on a side table with cheap ketchup packs like it was McDonald's or something. 3. Water You would never know that they actually DO have self-serve water stocked in the fridge, but there is. Guess where the cups are? On the other side of the counter behind a dessert display. Yup! Talk about terrible user-experience. 4. Ambiance There is NO TV and NO background music playing so everything else is amplified. From the couple next to you with their baby to the fridge(s). Besides that, the Edison lights, photo collage wall, and cafe vibes are a nice touch. 5. Menu Their digital menu is TERRIBLE. First of all, it's all the way on the back wall and written out in Comic Sans font with an intricate wood background makes it VERY hard to read. They also don't have a printed menu so if you don't have 20/20 vision, good luck! I've actually witnessed people come and go because they couldn't read the menu! Food's great here, however, often inconsistent. There are days when I've had some of the best dishes in the bay here ... and there are days when it didn't even meet my expectations. I'm a big fan of their malai chicken tikka roll.. usually it's served in an open paratha with lots of chicken. On my last visit, it was very dry and small. The parathas are good (little overpriced compared to Apna Bazaar) but good enough to satisfy a craving. I'd recommend this place for you to try it out. read more

While the parathas were soft and tasted good overall, they hardly had any filling - I could barely tell the Gobhi paratha from the paneer paratha :( The raita on the sidewas mild but tasty. Day 2: Paneer Paratha was the same. This time I got a picture of the filling. Raita was spoilt. It had bubbles brewing and did not taste right. Just OK! The place is nice and has a cool vibe but the management of this restaurant is as bad as it can get. The servers are in constant state of agitation and not able to provide a welcoming experience. The food tastes ok. The chai is what they excel at. Most of the food we ordered came out cold. It did taste decent but who would pay ~15$ for a plate of mutton-keema that feels cold. Another thing we noticed was the way the staff cleaned tables. I was pleasantly surprised with this place. I had the alu paratha and it was pretty great. I wish they served achaar with it too, but it tastes good by itself as well. The halwa puri chole was awesome. But my favourite was the Delhi cold coffee! Just like India!! I also tried the Oreo shake and the chocolate truffle pastry. They were okay. The only disappointment was the veg puff which was just a potato puff and didn't taste all that great. Over all a pretty good experience food-wise.
