We just moved to the area from the valley and we left behind our beloved Chinese restaurant. They knew us by name and order and they are hard to replace in our lives. But, one must move on with ones life and as it was cold out and I really wanted a noodle soup. Now, I struggle with most Chinese restaurants as they tend to be greasy and heavy and I'm not about that life. So I took to my trusty Yelp and found Kim's. The hospitality at this restaurant is so warm and inviting first and foremost! I ordered veggie fried rice and broccoli for pick up and it lacked in flavor! I had high hopes because the restaurant has been around for a while and the reviews are awesome but my experience wasn't what I wanted it to be... sadly! Stumbled upon this little jewel after being stood up by the Tax Doctor. Sitting in my car frustrated that I had wasted time coming to an appointment when the business was closed and noone bothered to follow up with me to tell me not to come. The trip wasn't all wasted! I was sitting in my car writing a Yelp review for the tax place, looked up and saw Kim's Chinese Restaurant. Not wanting to jump right back into traffic I decided to give them a try. I grew up eating Yee's although I wasn't surprised to see them closed, the following generations just didn't have the same passion for the food and community as the original owners. Kim's on the other hand takes me back to childhood. I went on a Monday and business was poppin! Most of the people were regulars and I knew that because they were addressed as such either by first name or small talk made the existing relationships obvious. I comfortably ate there the game was on. People stopped to watch while waiting for their food. I ordered the egg foo young and it was delicious!! I got a combo which came with an egg roll, friend shrimp and wontons. Not bad for $10. I look forward to trying other items on the menu. I've definitely found my new weekend Chinese spot!! read more

Been eating their food for a very long time, only place I can get the Cantonese food from my childhood. Unfortunately, my Mother's Day dinner was ruined. While indulging in my favorite Mah Tai Song, we found metal shavings in it. My son swallowed one of them before he realized what it was. I'll keep an eye on him in case he experiences any stomach or intestinal issues, the metal piece scratched the roof of his mouth though. Needless to say we didn't want to continue eating. Tried calling the restaurant back right away, we only live 5 minutes away, but although it was about 7:45 (they close at 8), no one answered the phone and we couldn't leave a message. They are closed on Monday so I won't be able to contact anyone until Tuesday. I spent over $80.00 for the meal. So, do I put all the food in my fridge until they re-open on Tuesday? read more

This place used to be a win-win, every time. Not so much anymore. I was recently warned that while the food was "okay", the service had gone down over the last several months. My family used to be regulars there, but have lately complained about their orders being consistently wrong. I decided to judge for myself and placed a relatively simple order tonight. I was very clear with my choices when selecting my entrees over the phone and the order was (correctly) repeated back to me. Yet to my disappointment, when I opened the containers, I discovered that half of my order was wrong. While some of the food I received was not what I ordered, as far as taste... the meal was not exactly terrible. (But full transparency: the egg rolls were really greasy.) What is really going on, Kim's?! Smh. I miss the really nice women who used to take the orders before. Not sure if this is new ownership, or if those women have moved on. The food was good but for the their prices???? I decided to try this place since it was closer to my home instead of going to my usual Chinese spot. Not only did I regret it, but they don't have many good portions for single people. When you get an order of fried rice, there's no choice to make it a small. The order can literally feed 3 plates so it just felt like a bucket of rice. The chicken wings were pretty good as well, but it would be about 20-30 per meal. I gave a three star review because the meal I had was not the best or worst of all time. It was a step up from a fast food version, but I had one problem with the meal, it was the rice. I'm not sure if it was their version of fried rice or not. I order a lunch special for my first meal. Other than that, everything else was good. The curry was a bit of a mystery. I'm not sure which region it was supposed to be from, but still good. The vegetables in the curry were perfect and the egg-roll/fried wonton were an added plus. Given the neighborhood I live in and my enjoyment of Asian food in general, I hope to visit again to give it another try. It was clean, friendly and more than worth the price. read more

A great hole in the wall and neighborhood establishment. I typically go here for takeout and order one of their numerous specials that are conveniently handwritten on the restaraunt walls. Unlike most Chinese restaraunts in Kim's price range, the food is cooked to order and all the chefs/ cooks are middle-aged Asian men who you can sometimes see exiting the kitchen for a smoke break. Recently I had a food mistake that caused me to have to drive all the way back to the restaurant from Hollywood on a really rough medical day. I just wanted my hood Chinese comfort food. I'm a strict life long vegetarian and ordered Plain Egg Foo Yung, Plain Fried rice and garlic green beans. The lady that took my order was new to me as I had never seen her before and I've been going to this the last of the good Cantonese spot after Ho Sai Kai and Yees closed. My family has been eating here for 4 generations since they opened. So getting my order right was important. Order my food said no meat, seafood , fish or oyster sauce atleast 20 times and the order receipt reflected that. Get all the way home, never in 55 plus years had an issue with an order. I open my fried rice shrimp all through it. I'm seething because I'm tired, hungry blood sugar dropping and I'm already in my PJs. I call let them know what happened, I want a full refund and free food since I now at 1:13 pm have to drive back from Hollywood literally to Crenshaw. I get dressed and head back hangry but still remembering I'm a daughter of the King. At first she said Wendy I thinks her name the manager, says I can give you a discount on the rice. I'm like no I have to drive waste gas because of your mistake. But I was resolved I'll just get my food all of it reordered because I wanted what I wanted my hood favorite Chinese food. I get there with my full order to return it. She says no you can keep it give it to family or whatever. I said ok cause I feed the homeless so I'll give it to them. I assume she's having my food re made when she walks outside and hands me my full refund in cash completely apologetic. And says I'm personally supervising your food being remade. Again super apologetic and explained the mistake was just busy and every fried rice order before mine and after was shrimp fried rice and they just got tunnel vision and made mine shrimp too . I completely understand human error and mistakes. just wrong day for me being hungry and starving after a medical procedure. But Wendy made it right!!! Her customer service and attitude was everything and will forever continue to be a customer of Kim's Kitchen carrying on The family tradition of eating here. My food was fresh, hot and hit that spot!!! Kind gave incredible perfect customer service and I give them 100 stars for taking care of me on a rough day. 55 plus year customer saved because of her kindness and customer service. Food is excellent and I highly recommend!!!!! My family owned two businesses on 54th and Western and Hyde park and Crensha for over 50 years so we along with Kim's were part of the business community. Last of a dying breed of real Cantonese Chinese cuisine. I know the difference between the Chinese food from the different regions of China. Cantonese is my ultimate favorite. Any flavor or mouth appeal was nonexistent from the meats OR the rice. It had NO detectable seasoning. The frozen peas and carrots in the dish were larger than the BBQ pork. Almost no egg. I think Kim's is ok when I don't want to drive far for better. However, though my Egg Foo Young taste ok...it was $17 for these little tiny shrimp literally dame size in diameter. So tiny I could not taste the shrimp. I'm annoyed...it's egg & tiny shrimp $17 was a rip off. I would not have a problem paying a little more for a decent size shrimp. To be honest, I've never seen a shrimp this tiny before, so I wonder was it was something manufactured to look like but, taste like nothing. read more
