Not sure how or why I've never done a review for Kona Grill?! I've been here a handful of times and have always enjoyed the food! There is a wide range of selection with the food. From pad Thai, sushi to sliders. Really, I've tried a lot of different things here and can't complain. The sushi is delicious, the pad Thai has lots of flavors, omg the macadamia nut chicken is to die for. Oh and let's not forget dessert! Disgusting. If I could give zero stars I would. Went in for the Fourth of July for drinks during happy hour. The initial bartender was kind but was replaced by a blonde bartender who was dressed festive for the holiday. She was rude. When it came time to order my last cocktail I asked for something specific and watched her add other mixtures that I didn't ask for. I've had things done to my drinks in the past so this made me uneasy. It didn't taste the same as the other bartender had made. Thankfully another bartender came on shift and I told him what happened and asked that he remake the drink, he did thankfully but I was charged for it. I was actually charged full price for my beverages during happy hour. I didn't feel comfortable raising the issue in person so I just left. Before leaving I used the restroom. It was disgusting. I called to speak to a manager to tell of my experience and ask to be properly reimbursed, I was transferred multiple times then hung up on. I will be going back to speak with a manager in person. How I was treated verses how I saw others treated is unacceptable. Dine here with caution. Service may not be the greatest. I can't speak for the food, I've only ever had cocktails here. I have always enjoyed Kona Grill. Tonight was first time I picked up Asian salad to go. I got a side salad without chicken (vegan) in addition to a roll I ordered. This is how I have always ordered the salad. This was always my favorite salad. I don't think I can ever order it again. Nothing tasted Asian. No crunchy things added. Only lettuce and cabbage.... and just like that my fav salad tastes like (not good) salad, sort of made me sick. Sadly, I can't ever try this again. We came in today for Happy Hour for my birthday. We were quickly seated. Drinks came fast, as did our food. The Moscow Mule was delicious, and seemed never ending!! The appetizers were so good. Kona has always been a favorite of ours! It's too bad they closed down the ones at North and Chandler, so we were happy when we came across one in Gilbert. The beers are a little lacking at this one. If you are a crafty you will have your choice between Blue moon and Laganitas. For food, on this particular night they didn't have the full sushi menu (which is what we get) but they did have a few of our favorites. Always go with the avocado veggie rolls (starter) and you will be happy! The peanut sauce is to die for. If you like sushi go with Vegas rolls and the Spicy Tuna. (Holy eel sauce! It doesn't get any better than this!) we followed it up with Pad Thai, which is about average here but does the job. Okay make sure you go to Happy Hour between 2-6. Their selection is great; especially when you have a party of eaters. My party ordered the chicken Saytay, meatballs, edamame, the sliders, chicken and shrimp lettuce wraps, spicy tuna roll, coconut shrimp roll (I think ), the avocado rolls, and the potstickers! They were all so delicious! When we were finally seated, we were given 3 separate booths. By this time, nearly 10:15, we were fine with anything, as many of us had not eaten since 9 am that morning, due to running around doing graduation stuff. We waited no less than 15 mins for our waitress to come to take our drink order and then another 15 to get our drinks- water and sodas- nothing that needed to be made, like alcoholic drinks. We hurriedly place our order, as to get it as quick as possible, given what we had already experienced with the drinks. A hour went by without any appetizers or anything coming out. We asked several times what was going on and explained that we were all very hungry. Our guests begged us to just leave and go to In and Out! The waitress assured us that they were working on it. By 11:30, we still had no food. Nob ody offered to bring us even bread . Our drinks were not refilled. By this time, the restaurant was thinning out and there was no reason why we still had ZERO food! The table next to us was on their 5th course and we couldn't even get our bowls of soup out!!!!! The waitress came to inform us that one of the cooks "just walked out". What?! OK, so no food? Slowly, food started to trickle out. One person at each table got a meal and the rest watched as they started and finished and still they had nothing. My husband had to wake up for work at 4 am the next day and he still hadn't received anything. My daughters (who were the graduates) had to leave without any food because they also had work in the morning. We explained to our waitress that they hadn't gotten their food and had to leave. I told her to take it off the bill. No apology, nothing! I also said it would be a nice gesture to give us a small discount for this debacle. At 12 pm, as the place was closing, my husband and my best friend from Maryland finally got their food. Everyone else left. We looked at the bill and not a dollar was taken off. No manager came to apologize. NOT A PEEP FROM ANYONE! Our bill was close to $400. We left exhausted, sad, disappointed. I understand that it was a busier night than they probably anticipated, but perhaps the best thing to do under the circumstances was to not seat anyone else, especially a party of 11. I have never encountered a worse experience at a restaurant in my entire life. My husband is a regional director for a huge company and he travels frequently for work and said the same. I have to say, if I'm looking for a cool and comfortable outside dining area, Kona Grill always seems to pop in my head right away! It's because of the outdoor area I always want to visit. This has been my third time at this location and although the service is nice and the atmosphere is inviting, the food is just okay. This most recent visit my family ordered a few different sushi rolls, grilled chicken sandwich and the pad thai. Overall the sushi and grilled chicken was okay and seemed a little bland. I also ordered a cucumber cocktail and unfortunately didn't finish it because it tasted more like plain club soda. Although this trip seems like we didn't enjoy it, we still enjoyed the outdoor area and surprisingly, the pad Thai! I probably would have never ordered this, unless we were in an authentic Thai restaurant, yet this happened to be the table favorite. I've been to a bunch of Kona Grills and my experience is always positive. For being a chain type of spot, I think their sushi is legitimately very good and while I can't say it's remotely close to authentic Japanese, the sushi roll creations are very tasty and creative with unique combinations that mix together very well. For example - I've been to Japan and I can't imagine they'd ever have a roll like their coconut shrimp roll, but I absolutely love it and think it tastes fabulous. I get it every time. I also like their Vegas roll, which again, not authentically Japanese, but delicious. I got their spicy tuna crunch roll most recently and it was great. But the number one MUST GET here is the angry edamame. It's spicy and wonderful - the kind where your mouth is positively on fire by the bottom of the bowl but you love it anyways. I can't say I've physically been inside this location (unlike Fashion Square) but I got it as takeout this week. They were great to do curb side pickup and drop the bag of food off in our trunk which is really helpful since my parents are high risk and we are being as careful as possible with the pandemic. As someone who generally picks hole in the wall more authentic sushi spots or fancy omakase style meals, I can definitely admit that I really like Kona grill, too. read more
