We stopped by for a quick happy hour. Restaurant was almost empty, but it was almost impossible to get any service. Stood and waited at the bar for while only to be ignored, went back to my table and waited. Finally asked the hostess who seated us if we can get some help. Ordered the sliders and meatballs, both cold and chewy, I returned those. Sushi was ok no thrills. My side Asian salad was $14 dollars and the Sam Adams beer at $9 was flat and the glass was soapy. We love Kona Grill. When I have a taste for sushi, this is the first place I think to go. I had a birthday special which we wanted to take advantage of so we visited on my actual birthday. We finally managed to score a table on inside the bar area during Happy Hour (we usually arrive just as the last table has sat). I was happy to see that the bar area was child free (In IL under 21 cannot be in the bar area, not the case here in AZ). In celebration I ordered a sake flight. I've had a few great ones on prior visits but did not see the warm apple one on the menu this time. I should have had a margarita as the awa yuki sparkling sake was the only drinkable one. I did not care for the oto junmai ginjo or the hakutsuru sayuri nigori sakes. I came for sushi so that's what we ordered - 1) CA roll (crab mix, motoyaki sauce, cucumber, fresh avocado), 2) crunchy spicy tuna (spicy tuna, cucumber, tempura crunch, togarashi, spicy motoyaki sauce, eel sauce) which wound up being too spicy for me, 3) crab crunch (crab mix, motoyaki sauce, cucumber, tempura flakes, eel sauce) and 4) Las Vegas roll (salmon, crab mix, cream cheese, tempura fried, eel sauce) which was delicious. All of the rolls were delicious as always & featured on the Happy Hour menu at a reduced rate - score! The beau always orders the Macadamia crusted chicken (half an order) but took half home as we ordered one more roll than normal. He said it was delicious as always (and having dinner for the next night saves me having to cook!). Food quality and taste are always consistent here, which is why we keep going back. Service was prompt & friendly. I would have liked a little more direction with regard to the sakes but just as we sat, 3 other tables sat & all of us were in the same servers section so she was busy. From expired whipcream, missing food, and terrible service I will not be coming back anytime soon. We made reservations for an early dinner to enjoy the end of restaurant week. When we began ordering it was clear our waitress didn't know to much about the dishes and had no interest in serving our family of 4. We also.learned that the prime rib was out which is the exact reason we came for dinner. We asked the manager if anything could be substituted but that was not an option. We also learned they were out of carrot cake and only had cheesecake. Appetizers came out separately and it felt that it took forever as it really just took a long time to actually order a meal. For the entrees we got two salmons, cilantro chicken, and a burger. All were okay at best and the burger was quite bland, dry, and missing the special sauce. The waitress decided to bring us our chexk before desser even came out whixh felt quite rude and never checked in. For dessert the three cheesecakes came out looking rather plain and without any forks to enjoy them with. After asking a few times we were able to get some whipcream and forks. Immediately upon trying the odd thick looking whip cream it was apparent it had very much so spoiled and gone bad. We let a waitress know and she just nodded and left them there. It feels like a health hazard leaving spoiled food on the table. We also realized that the cheesecake was missing a chocolate covered strawberry that was advertised. We over the years often are here outside happy hour times, BUT the prices at this place now is a joke! Seriously $11 for edamame, $17 for potstickers and $18 for lettuce cups? The high end steak joint across the lot has a fresh shrimp cocktail for $13 and you are selling lettuce cups for $18? We always went for the potstickers usually had two orders but we started with one tonight. They were so much smaller and not good at all. We were visiting with friends in the area, and they suggested that we go here for dinner. So, we sat down last night (Saturday) at around 7:30 or so. It didn't seem too busy for a Saturday night. Amber was our waitress and had a good energy about her, and answered all our questions. The food was good, but nothing to really make anything pop out. I had the sushi and salad plate. The tuna sushi on it didn't seem to have been prepped properly. At first I thought it still has a bit of bone in it, but I realized that the edges were hard and sharp. Not sure if it had dried out or what. The salad was okay. I had asked for the Philly Roll, and to sub fresh salmon for the smoked salmon. I don't know if they had made the swap or if the Philly Roll just really wasn't that appetizing, but I couldn't finish it. Luckily my guy likes smoked salmon and didn't seem to mind it. Everyone else at the table seemed okay with their plates, but none of us got really excited about what we had ordered. In terms of dessert, just go with the butter cake. The brownie and the cheesecake come from an outside company, but the butter cake is made in house and it definitely shows! read more

Here is another restaurant I have been to numerous times but never checked in. The quality is always very good and service as well. Their Salmon is just delicious and cooked to perfection. Salads are fresh and wonderful. We do enjoy getting a side of fries, this is the only negative, it's the smallest order I have seen for the price. If not for that I would have rated them higher. Samantha was our waitress/bartender this time, she was awful. As we sat at the bar I watched as she started to pour the wine I asked for, the bottle was about empty so instead of opening a new bottle she pulled out another bottle, different cheaper wine and poured me a glass of that. Stopped in for some happy hour after golf. It was a pleasant and non eventful lunch which can be a good thing. The place was very busy so they must be doing something right or they just have a great location. Either way we had a decent meal and the happy hour prices were reasonable. Things I didn't like so much, the experience started out bumpy. The booth we were directed to had a wet table. Covid sprayed. But like really wet, like pools of sanitizer. I said this was not good so the hostess said she would wipe it which she did. But then I noticed the booth seats were also soaked so I suggested sitting at the sushi bar in front of the fish tank which was fine. The back corner of my chair was broken and sharp. A little scary looking from a scratching yourself point of view but I didn't so it was fine. The prices seem a little steep for what you actually get. The happy hour tacos were 3 dollars each and were pretty small. Really good, like the best thing we had, but I could probably eat 4 or 5 so maybe 15$ for tacos. The poke bowl 9$, was a little small and really is mostly rice for 9$, but also good. Spicy tuna roll was ok. 6$ for six pieces I think. Cucumber was a little uneven or lacking and the roll was pretty plain Jane. Also not really a deal but it was compared to the other sushi. Lots of rolls for almost 20$ and things like pad Thai for almost 20$. Things are pricy, but I'm sure they have steep overhead and you pay for it when you go here. Like I said, the meal went and flowed well. Food was good. And we left happy so it's a win. Nothing really stood out though as spectacular but still really nice overall. read more

So... I used a yelp check in coupon today, it was an awesome deal $14.00 towards a free sushi roll. Thanks for the great coupon. But when it came time to redeem this it was SO strange, my waiter asked for my phone to go show the manager and he didn't return for about 7 or 8 minutes. It was so strange. I told him I felt like it was tacky and he said we only have one manager and he wanted to make sure you aren't lying. I found that even more tacky than taking and disappearing with my phone. I'm writing this review in the hopes that management can find a better way to handle this. It would be much better for a manager to politely visit my table to verify the coupon. I hope for the sake of other customers this doesn't happen again, as it's very off putting and unprofessional. Although as always, our sushi was fantastic. read more

Ate with my wife and daghter on Thanksgiving. I had the surf and turf, my rating: The filet wasn't much bigger than a 50c piece by 1/2", and hard as a rock. I ordered it medium well, it came practically raw and barely warm. The shrimps had absolutely no taste and not cooked through out. My daughter's steak was also undercooked. Ordered a cup of coffee, was lukewarm. Ordered a slice of cheesecake which was frozen and had to wait for it to thaw. We had a waiter that practically stayed at our table talking our heads off (not much privacy). For all that l paid $215 !!! I would get rid of that "chef" in an instant!! Holy crap!! Soooooo good! I came with my two youngest daughters and got them bento boxes. The value for a bento box is incredible! $9 for this spread AND a kids sundae! You can't find that nowadays anywhere! And the fries were so crunchy crispy good and the macaroni was creamy and rich not weak and generic. This is the 3rd time giving this place a chance. We had reservations yesterday for our anniversary at 545pm. We get there on time and we're seated promptly. 14 minutes go by and our waiter finally comes to our table to take our drink order. We had one minute to order from the Happy Hour menu. Another 15-20 minutes go by and we finally get our drinks. So, 25-30 minutes after being seated to receive your drinks is customary? Fast forward to the food. The entrees came out before the "Happy Hour" ordered small sushi. What? I ordered the Asian Chicken Salad and my chicken was raw. Great, another 15-20 minutes go by to cook another piece throughly, because who wants to eat raw chicken and get sick?? The Asian salad itself just looked like shredded lettuce that I could shred at home and instead of wontons, they include ramen noodles. Yes, hard crunchy ramen noodles that you could get for .15. So, all of this and our meal came out to $90. I even had to take the entire $18 Asian salad home, because I just ended up eating the Happy Hour sushi by the time they re-cooked another piece of chicken for me, dinner was over. Who ever wants to take a $18 salad home for it to go in the fridge and ultimately just be soggy to attempt eat the next day?? Thanks for the worst anniversary dinner. Wow, just wow. Never a big fan of this chain, but at least once a year or so, can be a decent visit. Not anymore. I am not sure where to start as this was a visit, so poor in service, quality and value, that we will never visit a Kona Grill again. Food: I know getting decent sushi in the area is somewhat challenging, but charge $16-$18 for the most basic rolls is a crime. If at least they were good, I could somewhat execute the price: but they are not. For example, a simple spicy tuna and shrimp tempura is a $16 roll. Are you kidding? The 3 sushi rolls we ordered were mediocre and taken the price into consideration: would not recommend sushi here. My daughter ordered the filet. Which was presented beautifully, but was ice cold. So the entire entree, including the cold sides had to go back. Replacement arrived: undercooked and underseasoned. Maybe the cold filet was a better option. The ribs were a complete disaster, sticky sauce masking fatty barely no meat 4.5 rib bones. Most of it was left on the plate. Service: Decent, but too long for refills and absolutely no care from management that one dinner's was messed up. No apology, no cares. Overall: Noise was off the chart. I thought there was some massive private party in the back, but nope its just extremely loud bar music piped in from the bar. The loud music just causes every diner to talk louder; so way too loud for a pleasant dining experience. San Tan Vilage is a busy shopping area and placed like Keg and others fill up quickly. This is the only explanation I have for this place being busy. Sorry not for us, never again. read more

After a long day at Kid's Empire, we stopped to grab a bite for dinner with our tired and hungry clan of hellions. Our youngest was being especially cranky and embarrassingly loud. I am very disappointed in this restaurant. My food was hardly warm and the half cup of rice was super dry. This dish alone was $21 and I say the portion did not come $21 worth.
