I have always liked Krispy Kreme glazed raised donuts. I am really sad that the chain suffered so much because of fiscal mismanagement a few years ago. That's, I really get super excited when KK has it's free donut promotions. "Talk like a pirate" day is my favorite (12 donuts!) but national donut day is awesome because I can pick from a variety, other than just the excellent glazed. The KK in Clackamas is fast and efficient, even on NDD. It makes me happy (but fatter) and I don't get the negatives folks chuck at the place. Are the donuts good? Yes. I bought a dozen jelly filled, 8 raspberry and 4 lemon. For a dollar apiece I would have expected them to not be as skimpy on the amount of jelly filling. This review is for the one Krispy Kreme at SE 82nd St in SE Portland. My husband and I needed a treat and I said "Lets go to Krispy Kreme! We can eat the donut there with coffee...its been awhile since we've been there!" We ordered a dozen. Then asked for coffee and the reply is "we are having problems with the coffee machine and we have no coffee." Well, that was disappointing...but I was curious if he just didn't want to make another pot (he was young and I had to check)...so then I asked "How long has the coffee machine been broken?" and he said a month!!! I used the restroom before we left (after asking for a code to get in the door) and piss was on the floor surrounding the bowl, as well as wet toilet paper...it took awhile to get the wet paper off the bottom of my shoe. Really hit and miss on staff and product. They're a little over priced in my opinion for the end product size, but I enjoy one on the rare occasion I have a major sweet tooth. I have picked up doughnuts for Sunday morning treat after church for kids and had them be so dense you could hardly chew them, other times they're great, light and fluffy. They say you learn something new every day. Today, I learned about National Coffee Day via a thread. Well, I figured that there would be a National Coffee Day. I just didn't know it was today. Then, a friend had some comments on a check-in, whereby someone posted a link providing information as to who was participating, which was thoughtful of them to do so. It's not so much about schlepping somewhere to get a lousy free cup of coffee as it is about doing something "kinda fun" and definitely geeky. When I pulled into Krispy Kreme's (KK's) parking lot, it was obvious that this event was not pulling in the crowds that National Doughnut Day does. That said, there was no line. Then, the clusterfuck began. Since they were nice enough to provide coffee and the entry level KK glazed donut, I thought I would also purchase another one. They couldn't even tell me which one was of the double chocolate variety, and it sounds like they didn't even comprehend what I was asking (easy - read: chocolate frosting atop a chocolate cake base). Then, they informed me of a dozen donuts at half price, since it was within an hour of the store's closing. Now, while they couldn't possibly know if I needed a dozen donuts, which could be the case if part of a religious organization that lauds abundant procreation, I wanted to ask if they would foot the E.R. bill after I consumed those 12 donuts by myself! Yes, I know they're told to sell donuts and let people know of specials. Then, I asked if they had decaf, being later in the night. At first I was told yes ... and then I was told no. I attempted to pay for that additional donut costing $1.35, reaching into my pocket. I was told something about the till not being set up for that at this time and if I could pay with plastic, so I then tendered payment in a different form as requested. Lastly, they couldn't even run the credit card correctly but, eventually, they did. This led me to ask myself if it was worth it to step out into a cool autumn night in North Clackamas County to obtain a free cup of coffee along with a free donut. Sure, why not? If anything, it was a quirky experience. Also, I learned something else, that being that I could detach myself from Yelp Talk, come back, and still find the figurative "pulling of hair" going on.
