My boyfriend insisted he take me to La Cabra for a cardamom bun. Normally, I don't go for pastries, so he ordered one and let me nibble at it. The cardamom bun is not something I'd personally go for, but I was impressed by the unique flavor profile. Sweet with a little savoriness from the cardamom. This was actually so good, in fact, that when I met a college friend the next day for breakfast at MUD, we walked just around the corner back to La Cabra, so I could buy her a cardamom bun to take on her subway ride home. Cardamom bun - chewy doughy texture and not overwhelming cardamom flavor. Absolutely loved the dough! Fluffy and chewy Bread and cheese - there's a spread that goes inside the bread, which seems like it wasn't butter or just mayo. The cheese is powerful and elevated the seed bread. As for the bread... very savory and the seeds on top elevates the savory notes. Love! Service was quite nice, they made the bread cheese after taking my order. Cashier was friendly. After having lunch at East village my friend and I decided to get a coffee nearby. We found La Cabra with lots of good reviews! when we got there, it had a long line which was unexpected for a coffee shop. However, the rotation was pretty quick so we didn't have to wait for like 30 minutes. We both got iced lattes and it was a AMAZING 10 out of 10. Definitely one of the best lattes out there. We did add a simple syrup to it to make it sweeter. One thing to mention is that bottles of simple syrup and hand sanitizer look the same so I almost put the sanitizer in my latte (make sure to see the label because they are right next to each other haha) Another thing I liked about La Cabra was their minimal aesthetic decor, plus the cups for dine-in coffee were so cute I really wanted to buy them. Finally made it to this Nordic coffee mecca this weekend. It was a bit of a madhouse on Sunday afternoon, but their coffee equipment is state of the art, and it's fun to watch the baristas make everything right if front of you. I ordered a cappuccino with oat milk and my coffee nerd hubbie ordered a pour over using unwashed beans from Guatemala. The pour over was delicious with a fruity and nuanced flavor, but the cappuccino was average. We also ordered a pomegranate caramel cookie and a chocolate croissant. The caramel in the cookie was amazing, and the croissant was the perfect level of flaky, but I would have liked a bit more chocolate. We spent almost $40 (including tip) on just two coffees and two pastries, so this is somewhere I would only go as a special treat. Also, I didn't love that they automatically included a 20% tip even though we were taking everything to go. The space is tiny with very minimal seating, so dining in wasn't an option. read more

I came to La Cabra this past Saturday after having it on my list for a while. I was excited to try the croissants, cardamom buns, and pick up a fresh load of sourdough bread. Unfortunately, my experience was marred due to the extremely rude service we received. We patronize a lot of different bakeries and restaurants all across the city, and it's rare that we encounter rude service ever. The decor of the place is very minimalist; there are no boards that show what's on the menu. They simply have two sets of menus at the front counter, one by the cashier and one on top of the glass pastry counter. I went to take one so my husband and I could decide what we wanted before we got to the front. A male worker came from behind the counter, snatched the menu right out of my hands as though I was a child, and simply said, "this menu is for customers at the front." He didn't apologize at all. My husband was angered by this rude service, but I didn't want to leave because we had already waited long enough in line, and I wasn't going to leave empty handed due to time already spent waiting. What made this worse: two customers behind me, both white women, did the exact same thing i did and took a menu from the front to view while in line. This male worker saw it both times yet didn't snatch the menu from either of them and let them be. It's extremely unfortunate and sad that in 2024, businesses cannot treat all customers equally and with respect. It doesn't matter what the quality of the food here is -- there are so many amazing food businesses in New York City that will get my hard earned dollars, and I'll never come back here or recommend this place to anyone given the awful service. I already spent $20+ on pastries and bread here, and frankly, that was $20 too much. read more

This bakery has been on my list for so long and I finally popped in here today after a workout. WOW, obsessed with the cardamom bun. I also snagged a ham and cheese croissant (bun?) last minute that was deliciously buttery, flakey, and full of melt-in-your-mouth flavor. I normally drink coffee but something today made me go with an Iced Chai latte and it did NOT disappoint! I must come back and also get some coffee here now. The baristas and counter person were so kind and had such lovely energy. You can tell they value locals coming in to grab their daily breakfast before heading to work. It was nice. I also love the minimalistic interior and the fact that they have a few seating options inside and some outdoor tables. This place was so good I immediately texted my friends that live in the neighborhood telling them they need to try this place if they haven't yet. You've already heard all about this place. It's perpetually busy with a line out the door, and there's never any seating left. I tried and failed to get baked goods here multiple times (I just don't have the patience to wait in line for an hour for baked goods) before I finally tried coming early on a weekday and was able to waltz right through a very short line (still failed to get a coveted seat). My first visit, I got the famous cardamom bun, which is a must-try here. It was the most perfect light, pillowy bun I've ever had. The cardamom flavor was forward but not too intense. It was lightly sweet and just perfect in every way. I also got the most incredible seasonal choux, which was flavored with milk chocolate, hazelnut, and espresso, and it was insanely good. Super flavorful filling, crispy choux, and perfectly balanced in every way. It was one of the best baked goods I had all year. On my return trip, however, the cardamom bun wasn't as good. It wasn't as soft or light, and it was missing some of that magic. Did something change when they opened their second location? I'm not sure but I've heard others claim the quality has dropped a little as well. Unfortunately, the seasonal choux had switched to an apple choux, which I'm just not interested in. The coconut calamansi tart I tried was very tart with no other flavor in it. I could hardly taste the coconut. The baked goods here are on the pricey side, so this visit was pretty disappointing. I'm not sure what happened. I do still recommend this place, despite the huge crowd, the lack of seating, and the drop in quality, but you may want to temper your expectations. And definitely try to come on a weekday. read more

Don't you hate it when the hype is real? Yes, the cardamom buns are really that good. And some of the best coffee I've had in the city. Business is brisk, but they handle it well. Person behind the counter was gracious despite the line, and the baristas are fast and precise. The location on Lafayette is small, but depending on the time of day you could probably linger for a little while. This location also has a large window behind the counter where you can see the patissier working, which I'm a sucker for. Not sure about other locations. Definitely pay a visit. read more

Wildly overrated, and small and expensive. The pastries here, in general, were actually good. If I was in the neighborhood and was very wealthy, I'd stop by again. If someone gave me a bunch of the pastries, in general I'd enjoy them. But this is billed as a destination-worthy bakery in NYC, and it certainly is not worth that. The rye tart is pretty and tastes "different" but relies on that prettiness and differentness for the attention it gets. But it's simply not that delicious and is just social media, overhyped food porn garbage. The cardamom bun is good but no better than elsewhere in NYC, and is more expensive and/or tinier than most. The ham and cheese croissant was pretty good, but overpriced. If you're looking for a great bakery, go to Bench Flour Bakery in Astoria or Mel (reopening soon, I hope). Stopped in on a random Thursday, around 11am to pick up some cardamom buns. I had read about the café on Eater and decided to stop in since I was in the area. They have a little covered seating area in the front and some small tables on the inside. Counter to order is in the back with all the pastries. I was heading home to JC so I didn't get a coffee, but I will definitely next time I visit. I got two cardamom buns to go and they were perfect. We had them roughly 10 hours later (midnight snack?) and they were still soft and gooey. These were the best cardamom buns that I've had in NYC outside of Sweden. It is so disheartening when you go into a shop, it's typically great with friendly staff, but there's one employee who can sour your entire experience. I go often and have always had these negative experiences from an employee there who is typically wearing really loose pants with rain boots. sometimes he wears a hat with little horns on the top. He never says hi, he never asks how are you. He always assumes your order (he'll ring you up for a large without asking the size, and rings you up for to go without asking if you're dining in), and is just not a very pleasant person to interact with. which is such a shame because the rest of the staff is genuinely great. you'll have a great experience there as long as this one person isn't taking your order on the register. read more
