Decided to stop in for a quick snack after my visit to CVS across the street. Hand sanitizer is provided as you walk in the door. And it's a small space so only 2 customers can easily fit inside. I appreciated that windows and doors were open to increase air circulation in the small area. I was deciding which loaf to get and finally decided on the seeded sour baguette and a small olive bread. The baker mentioned the olive one would be the more sour bread. He was also very kind to throw in a chocolate croissant and a morning bun since it was out first time in the shop. Score! I was eyeing the chocolate croissant but was hesitant in getting another bakery item. I was excited about the seeded sour baguette so I tore off a piece as I walked out of the shop. Finally! A place that advertises sour bread, and it was indeed sour! The olive bread wasn't as sour as the seeded baguette. The morning bun and chocolate croissant were also tasty. I heated them in my toaster over to get them warm. They're not as buttery and sugary as some more traditional french bakeries, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. Definitely bookmarked this bakery and I plan to return to try some of the other pastries, cookies, and pies. Cautious and quick, La Farine is till serving everything dessert despite the pandemic. Only one person at a time is allowed inside to avoid cross contamination, but there is barely a wait. I came here to buy a fruit tart for my friend's birthday. There was no line and the check out process was quick and easy. I chose this fruit tart for its beautiful design - the center looks like a yellow rose. It tasted delicious! The pastry cream was not too sweet; tons of fruit (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, mangos); and a thin pastry shell that was still crunchy but easy to cut through. 10 inch tart for $25 so I would say it's reasonably priced. Would highly recommend trying! I also tried the lemon cheesecake and I was pretty disappointed. It wasn't anything special - not fluffy and the lemon flavor had a weird aftertaste. A bit overpriced for $30. I also tried the chocolate croissants and morning buns, both of which were really yummy! Chocolate croissant had flaky layers of buttery goodness with lovely chocolate inside. My family doesn't get birthday cakes anymore, we get fruit tarts from here instead!! I'm not a huge fan of sweets but this is one of my favorite desserts EVER. The crust is crunchy and is a strong foundation for everything else on top. The cream has the right amount of sweetness to it while the fruits add tartness creating my ideal dessert that is well balanced. Honestly it's so good I could eat this all by myself. The fruit tart is $25 which is cheaper than most cakes you can get and they have other pastries available as well! All the fruit tarts have different fruits and are assembled differently so I would go earlier to be able to choose the prettiest one. After living nearby for 7 years I finally went in to the one on Fruitvale Avenue. Celebrating pastries as a consumer for a particular professional reason. I love them but I try to stay away from them. The actual pastry can't be beat, but whatever flavor they say is going on in them is so subtle, which I know is a groovy thing, but there's a fine line when the groove becomes a complete absence of flavor and a big disappointment. Such was the case for my favorite kind of croissant if I ever see them... raspberry. I had bought several different flavors of pastries and put my hand in the bag and broke a piece off without knowing what was what. I had no idea that it was a raspberry croissant and when I opened it up inside it had a very faint pale pink schmear of what I suppose was meant to be something raspberry inside. Basically no flavor. And a weird bunch of white sugary icing drizzled on top of it, not something I look for on a croissant. The same was true when I broke off a piece of the Almond croissant, another general favorite of mine. Usually almond croissants are overstuffed with too much almond goo but this had so little that I couldn't even tell it was an almond croissant. I thought perhaps they gave me a plain one by mistake, until I looked closely and saw that it did have little dots of smashed almonds inside and the traditional slivers of almonds on top. Wow...for a French pastry shop with that kind of reputation and excellent actual pastry it is a crime to skimp on the fillings like that. Total bummer. I preordered and paid over the phone around noon on a Friday to make sure I got everything I wanted, but literally all the baked goods were still available aside from the fruit tarts 15 mins before closing time. They offer French staples like Baguettes, Croissants, Pain Au Chocolat with bread options like Olive loafs, sourdough bread with a variety of cookies as well. I have bought cakes here that tend to be available in the display case with flavors like Pistachio with chocolate frosting and Moka flavor with vanilla cake. This place will certainly make you happy with a wide range of baked goods like Rugelach (a Jewish fruit filled pastry) to raisin cookies for a great breakfast treat with coffee. During the beginning of May, 2021, they only allow three people in the shop at a time. They have hand sanitizer to put on your hands as you enter, and everyone needs to wear a mask. This is a bakery--it takes dedicated people getting up long before the sun rises to bake the bread, and the pastries. It is not just a bakery, it is a French bakery. They make beautiful pastries, pies, cakes--and even wedding cakes. I purchased  a chocolate espresso chocolate chip cookie around 2 pm and immediately ate it. What was I thinking? I had already had some strong coffee in the morning. After I ate the cookie, I asked myself how smart I was--and I did have a hard time sleeping that night. There are people waiting in line outside the building for a reason...this bakery makes tasty breads and pastries. Just looking at the beautiful tortes with fresh fruit on top made my mouth water.  Like an old time bakery, the fresh bread is "naked" and sitting on a shelf. When it is purchased, they put it in a paper bag and that creates less landfill.  There are large glass jars filled with fresh cookies--yum, yum. Mini Eclairs are prettily arranged in glass cases.They also sell bags of coffee beans, and they actually sell a large coffee cup and saucer with their emblem on it. As I looked closely at the cup I saw that this business was established in 1977.  Wow!!! This place has history!!! If the walls could talk, I wonder what they would say? read more

This is a really good bakery. They have almost anything you can think of and need for any occasion or event. The only issue I have with this place is they allow a homeless man to panhandle in/ outside their bakery. The homeless man asked me to buy him something for his birthday and I did because it's his birthday so why not! But then after I finished paying for him, he proceeds to ask the next customers that just walked in of course not knowing I already bought him something for $10. So one of the workers tells me he does this all the time and they don't do anything about it. I tell the rest of the customers after me that I already bought him something and he proceeds to ask everyone in line to buy him things because it's his birthday. I thought I just went in a bad time but I went in a few days after and it's the same guy saying it's his birthday again! Didn't know you could be born on two different days on the same year like that. I straight up told him I'm not falling for his scam and he walked away and proceeded to ask my sister who was following behind me and so on. After this experience I have never returned. read more

I was pretty bummed out as they closed early into the pandemic and couldn't get a tart for my birthday. They've since opened back up and the line to go in can be a bit annoying, but most places are still like that nowadays. So go during off peak time as this area gets crowded during lunch and dinner time. For the weekends or any popular holidays, it's still better to preorder a fruit tart the day before as they can run out in store. La Farine was recommended by friends as one of the best bakeries in the East Bay, and the bakery did not disappoint! We brought several items to a friend's for dessert and almost all were a hit! The frangipane (almond pastry cream) fruit tarts, espresso tart, chocolate pound cake, chocolate macaroons, and shortbread were all delicious! I thought the Jezebel cookie was a bit overstuffed (i.e. too many mix-ins, not enough cookie) and that the coconut lime tart was not tart enough and weighed down by its filling. I was looking for mini treats for a farewell. Due to covid many aren't willing to share a whole dessert like a cake or pie. So this was the perfect alternative for everyone to get a piece. I placed my order one day in advance which I was happy they were able to do in such short notice. The mini fruit tarte are so delicious and not too sweet. I ordered 20 variety of apple, mixed berries, mixed berries with mango. Although my order only came with one apple tarte. The presentation and service was wonderful. It's a fulfilling item that has such a subtle sweet taste, but it so good! The presentation is so pretty no one wanted to eat them. Everyone was happy with the flavors. Came here after hearing it as a recommendation to me since I'm huge in sweets, baked goods, etc. First off, approaching the patisserie is not easy. It's located on a block with many other restaurants and shops so parking is a bit of a hassle. That said, I did manage to be lucky enough to find a spot right in front of the bakery. After approaching the entrance, I do appreciate their efforts to be save due to the covid situation so you do have to wear a mask (obviously), but you also have to use hand sanitizer before they serve/help you. I did go a bit later in the day so they didn't have as much as it seems like they would, but there is still quite a selection. To try it out, I did buy a morning bun as well as an almond tart. Tried the morning bun today and while it's sweet, it's not overly sweet at all. And I love the cinnamon taste to it. If this is any indication on their remaining sweets, I'm looking forward to trying the almond tart. read more

Always a great place. Whenever I go to my Eye doctor appt at, All eyes on me next door, I have to stop by the bakery. There is usually a line. Since COVID they only allow a few people in at a time. The line goes pretty quickly. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Today I got the buttery croissant, chocolate croissant, cheddar cheese roll and the fruit tart. I found this place because I happen to park right in front of it trying to go do work at a cafe (pre-covid times). It smelled so good passing by it, I had to go inside!! They have so many selections of sweet pastries, savory pastries, baguettes, bread, cakes, and fruit tarts. This morning I went to pick up a few things from them and it was the first time since COVID. The crust is the right consistency, not too hard or too crumbly. The custard cream is not too sweet and well-balanced. The fruit on top is always fresh and covered lightly with a glaze. For $25, it is a good price for the quality. Each of the fruit tarts is unique, with different fruit and designs on them. COVID precautions are in place. They limit the amount of people inside to one or two customers at a time. There is hand sanitizer at the door and masks are mandated.
