This place is a popular one in SGV and I'm so glad I finally got to try it! I came here with a friend on a saturday around 1pm and there was a bit of a wait, but only about 10 minutes. We sat down and ordered, and the food came out pretty fast. I got the sausage rice and it was delicious! The plate includes sausage, cabbage, tomato and eggs, and rice. We've been going to Sinbala for decades now. From when the crowds were ridiculous to virtual ghost town during the pandemic. It's nice to see that the business is finally picking up lately. It was full on the weekday night we went and as much as I enjoyed just walking in and having available tables at all times, they wouldn't be able to survive that way. And we need places like Sinbala to endure. It's comfort food at its best. When you ask locals where to get pork chop or sausage rice, Sinbala will probably always be at the top of the list. They're simple dishes but even when you eat the complimentary accoutrements, you can see how much care they put into their foods. The cabbage looks bland but you can taste that it wasn't boiled in just water (or msg). The corn and tomato eggs are prepared with heart. It's just such a complete meal served by a friendly staff in a dining room reminiscent of the ambiance in Taipei. Vegetables were a tad overcooked, should have been sweet and crispy but didn't feel that way to me. Volume is very filling, but for the price it was definitely a stretch for the amount of meat. Sinbala has always been a comforting and nostalgic place for me. Been coming here since high school and the food is usually always consistent. If I don't know what to get, #1 Sinbala sausage rice always hits the spot. However, this time around I noticed some differences. The dish doesn't have pickled vegetables and the tomato egg is a bit different but overall still good. I haven't been in a while so I'm not sure when this change happened. And of course with times and rising costs, this dish is now ~$14 instead of the under $10 I used to pay. Still sort of reasonable considering the prices elsewhere. Milk teas are solid and get the shaved iced in the summer to share. Also, the minimum charge to use credit card is now $30. If you're eating alone, bring cash! read more

I ordered fried fish cake, A vegetables, spicy wontons, pork chop rice, and squid vermicelli. It's been awhile since I've had Sinbala's food and Sinbala has had a few owner changes so I wasn't surprised when the taste just wasn't the same. It felt like most of the orders were less savory/flavorful. Something was definitely missing. The A choy was lightly salty sweet which was actually quite nice. The fish cake felt plain. I wish it had some white pepper and a bit more salt. The spicy wonton was actually still quite good! I love how they add peanut crumbles, it really makes a difference! Came back a few weeks ago with a friend, during the previous heat wave when it was 100F in Sierra Madre It was mid afternoon and almost empty. We ordered the shaved ice with several toppings and dug in. Still delicious. Real old skool Taiwanese style not the fancy Korean or modern Taiwanese. I have liked Sinbala for many years. They used to have one in Rowland Heights, which is closer to me. This one is in Arcadia and we often went there when we lived in Temple City. My mom and I went there on Saturday night at around 7 p.m. and were seated immediately. The place was still crowded and it was small but cozy inside. We ordered the fried pork chop with noodle soup, pumpkin rice noodles, and Tainan rice cake in a bowl. They first served us the noodle soup then fried pork chop came afterwards. The noodle soup was healthy but tasted a little bland; the fried pork chop was very flavorful and a little crispy outside and the meat was soft and tender. The pumpkin rice noodles tasted not bad but my mom didn't like them very much. My favorite dish was the appetizer Tainan rice cake in a bowl. It was so authentic and yummy with the sauce. I was really looking forward to Taiwanese food and came all the way to this Taiwanese restaurant, but we left feeling disappointed. As a Taiwanese person, I'm quite let down. The quality has remained high - it's one of the best spots to get authentic Taiwanese food outside of Taiwan. You can't really go wrong here. My only complaint is the prices have gone up a lot over recent years, and the new credit card minimum is $30... the economy is rough, but $6-7 for a tea drink or $7 for a taiwanese "meatball" or "tamale" is excessive. read more
