This is a super cozy restaurant with close-quarters seating, beautiful paintings on the walls, mood lighting, and delicious food. The curry laksa was our favorite, and the bowl seemed bottomless. After we finished all the noodles and toppings, we ordered a side of jasmine rice for the remaining curry because we didn't want it to go to waste! It was so flavorful and perfect on a chilly day. I honestly liked the food here a lot. It wasn't the best Southeast Asian food I'd ever had but still very good. I discovered this place through BuzzFeed's Worth It episode on curry, and what I didn't like was how the prices have increased significantly within the past year/after that video was published. Not only that, the prices on their online menu are not accurate. In the restaurant, Roti Canai was $9 (instead of $8) and the seafood curry laksa with mix and match noodles was $21 instead of what the most expensive one would have been on the old menu ($18 for shrimp and mix and match noodles). Also when our check came, we were also charged more on the chili crab ($25) than the server told us it would cost before we ordered ($24). To go back to the food we ate, I loved the idea of the soft shell chili crab dish. I love eating crab, but it's always a huge hassle to have to peel it in restaurants. Making the dish with soft shell crab was a nice touch. The sauce in the dish was a little sweet for me, but still complimented the fried mantou that came with the dish well. We also ordered the "Ultimate Curry Laksa" which was delicious too. We got it with seafood and the mixed noodles and felt like that was a good choice, but it does tack on $4 to the price. The roti canai was surprisingly large and equally delicious. Again, I liked the food here a lot, I just felt sour from the feeling like they were trying to squeeze extra dollars by shady means. Even without that, I felt the restaurant was a little bit on the expensive side. I also don't know if the extra charge was intentional or not, but I have seen at least one other review mention the price charged was higher than the price listed in the menu. In the end, I will probably be willing to come back and give Laut another shot because I enjoyed the food. I hope next time is as good an experience with the check as with the food. read more

I came to Laut because I saw it featured on Buzzfeed Worth It. My verdict is that it was totally worth it. I ordered the Roti Cannai, the mixed seafood Laksa, and the Singaporean soft shell chili crab. All three dishes were super delicious. The roti cannai is a bit pricier than most other places that sell naan, prata, roti etc, but this roti cannai was definitely sizeable and had many folds it felt like a lot! The roti itself was super buttery and delicious and the curry was perfect with it. The Singaporean soft shell chili crab with the fried mantou was delicious! The most difficult part of Singaporean chili crab is having to eat around the shells but the soft shell crab took away all of the work and hassle. The flavor and sauce were good and the soft shell crab was crispy and well battered. The mixed seafood laksa was delicious. We got mixed noodles with it too and it was not cheap for a soup noodles but it was still extremely delicious. There is plenty of seafood, and the curry soup is perfectly seasoned. Came here after being told it was a two hour wait at Thai Villa, and I'm glad we stumbled upon this spot. As a party of two, we got seated immediately at around 7:15, although when we finished dinner there was a crowd of people waiting to get seated. Had the laksa with chicken (you can pick the meat) and the egg noodles (you also customize the noodles) (~$18). The soup was featured on Buzzfeed's worth it, which was cool to see. I wish the broth was a bit creamier but it was still hearty and filling. It's not spicy at all; there is another option of laksa that Anthony Bourdain likes and was described by the waitress as medium spicy. It doesn't have meat and incorporates fish sauce. They do take card. It's a small restaurant that's homey, so I wouldn't come in a big group. Overall it's a good spot and there's a good array of options of Southeastern cuisine to choose from. read more

We heard Laut was the first Malay restaurant to receive a Michelin star in NYC. We had to check it out for this reason. We were not disappointed. Our personal favorite was the Roti Canal, which is what the restaurant calls an "anytime-izer," which indicates you can eat it at any time as an appetizer or something else. It tasted like a very flat and lightly sweetened pancake that we ripped apart and let sit in the sauce that is pictured next to it (which is a mildly spicy curry). We ate it after about 60 seconds of absorbing the curry sauce and it was delicious. The other meals that were pictured do not compare the the roti canal, however, they were both really good. The Hainanese chicken is prepared to be somewhat dry, so if you like juicier chicken, this might not be for you. I didn't realize it was baked, and personally I like the steamed version more. The chicken wasn't cut well so it kind of sticks together, which is somewhat unpleasant.. The curry laksa soup was also very good. I kind of wish it could have been thicker, though. The interior was also very nice. The have high ceilings and art can be found in almost every part of the walls. If you go into the bathroom they have some comical signs about washing you hands an another about how to aim for both men and women. Overall I give the establishment 5/5. I had some things I did not enjoy but those are more personal preferences and had nothing to do with the establishment. read more

Walked 20+ blocks to get here and it was worth it. Roti prata a tad overdone but the curry was excellent. Nasi lemak tasty and well done (no bone in chicken so Americanized a bit, but sambal did have real shrimp), salad was fresh and coconut rice was pure. I recently got together for dinner with a dear friend who I used to see more often but their living out of state and infrequent visits to NYC for pleasure have slowed such times down quite a bit. Fortunately an opportunity arose to dine at long last and since she keeps to a more vegetarian dining regimen I suggested that she pick the place but to go easy on my carnivorous preferences. She opted for Laut which I had never been to before this visit. Our visit was not quite past a conventional suppertime but in NYC people can flock into a place at a moments notice and on entry there were a few tables available. I smiled and asked for one near an outlet as my phone had died from my recent wanderings and lucky me they had one for me. I never get around to purchasing the external battery that many friends suggest I do so anyway back to Laut. The waitstaff were very friendly and quick and while some of the beverages sounded tasty it was a non-drinking night for me so water was the mutual choice (my companion doesn't drink much if at all so this was fine). We did each agree on an appetizer which was their summer rolls but the veggie kind and with their sliced into "6" pieces we each had three. The flavor of mint in these really brought a refreshing notion to them. If I return I am getting them with shrimp like I usually do at Nha Trang to see if there is a difference. Main courses were a Chicken Pad Thai for me and a Spicy rice for my friend and to say they were wonderfully seasoned and tasting was an understatement. I hadn't eaten all day so there was nothing left of mine but my friend decided that bringing some home would be a good idea since she was full. When the bill came it was around $40 dollars which is fine considering there were two main courses and an appetizer and we were in NYC and not some small place outside of town. I'll definitely return and send a word of "kudos" to the staff of Laut for an enjoyable evening. read more

My friend and I had dinner here at 5PM on Sunday. We did make a reservation but it looked like it would be easy to get a table at that time. We did see more people walk in later in the evening, so plan accordingly! I thought everything we got was solid. The roti was thin, lightly crispy and served as a great app/side. The beef rendang was yummy, the beef tender and curry having nice flavor. We got the char kway teow noodles which I thought were great. I love broad flat noodles. Texture was perfectly chewy. I also appreciated that the sauce wasn't too salty. I find that sometimes these types of noodle dishes can taste too salty or overpowered by soy sauce taste, but I thought this had a good balance. Portion size is good too - my friend and I were FULL from this meal. And I'm a big eater. I'd say Laut is a solid spot if you are craving SE asian cuisine! read more

Came here on a Saturday evening during the summer with my friends when one of them told the group that this was one of the first Malaysian restaurants that received a Michelin Star in New York. I was super excited and was very hungry coming in from a long day of walking around. When we walked in they asked us if we had a reservation and when we said we didn't, we thought we likely won't be served or would have to wait for a long time. However the hostess checked and told us a table was indeed open and got seated and served with drinks really quickly. The interior decoration was beautiful but it's a small space inside with the seats very bunched together. I got the Singapore Hokkien Men and it was delicious. The broth was very flavorful and the seafood and noodles were cooked really well. I would definitely come back next time to try their other dishes and drinks! read more

Foodwise, some dishes were a hit and some were a miss. Thai Iced Tea- Not sweet or milky enough. Bandung drink- Not my favorite drink. It tasted very artificial and flowery. I would not get this again. Curry Puffs- Delicious! Flavorful and generous in size. Be sure to ask for a dipping sauce to pair with them. Chicken Satay- This is definitely the tastiest chicken stay I have ever had. Singaporea Chilean Soft Shell Crab- I really looked forward to trying this dish, but was disappointed at the amount of crab I was given. For $24, I felt ripped off. I came here a couple of Friday's ago for the first time with a friend for dinner around 8:30. We had a drink at the bar right next door, then went over for dinner. When we got there, they said it would be about a 30 minute wait, so we put our name in and then went back to the bar for another drink. They texted us a little bit later and we were then seated right away. Not a tiny restaurant but not huge, good amount of tables. Typical Thai menu. I had the classic Pad Thai with chicken which is one of my favorite dishes. It was really good and on par with some of my favorite thai places. It is also a HUGE portion, served in a massive bowl. I probably ended up taking more than half of it home. The guy I was with had a shrimp dish that wasn't as big but he said it was good. They just served it with the tails on, which is kinda annoying, but said it was still good. Quick, good service - nothing fancy of a place but still nice. If you love pineapples mixed with your rice, I recommend trying the fragrant pineapple dish. It is served with lemongrass, galangal, turmeric, onion, ginger coriander, bell pepper, tamarind and cashew nuts. On weekdays, they open from 11:30am-3:15pm and open again from 5pm- 9:45pm. Okay so I got really good recommendations for this place and there definitely was a line. I did like the roti canai and the seafood curry laksa. Not sure if I'm just not good at differentiating good and great curry, but the flavors were good not anything amazing. I did however really like the beef rendang. Growing up, I was a little chubbet that got bullied and made fun of all the time because I was chubby. I had a friend in middle school who was also chubby and we both just got teased for being a pair of cherubs. Thinking about it now, I think we both looked adorable! Anyways, she moved in middle school and I haven't seen her in almost two decades. She recently got married and almost right after they got married, he joined the military and got deployed. She decided to do a road trip and visit all her friends instead of moping around and missing her husband. Very inspirational! I was one of those friends she decided to meet up with. I chose this spot because I saw on Instagram all the adds, but I may have gotten the wrong one... Will have to confirm later. We decided to share our meal so we go the following: - Spicy laksa noodle dish: this tasted and smelt like high end dish soap. It tasted like someone forgot to rinse the bowl after washing it and poured the food in. We had to send it back, which they did not give us problems about. - Curry laksa noodle: replaced the one above, but my friend was not a fan because it was very sweet. Usually laksas have this deep curry taste, but this was missing a lot of something and very one flavor: sweet! I had to ask for limes to squeeze in and poured a bunch of hot sauce to make it doable - Fried okra: I was very reluctant to get this, but wow! This thing was super delicious! I would honestly go back here just to get this and nothing more. - Crab dish: came with steamed buns which were bouncy and good, but the fried softshell crab in a tomato egg like moment tasted like ketchup. It was not good at all. I normally do not like sharing soft shell crab because it is one of my faves, but this one I was very generous! Drinks here are just fine. Nothing extraordinary. Just like the food, very one tone and not all that impressive. I felt bad because I did not enjoy this place and my friend wanted to treat me here. The staff is very nice and sweet, but the food. The art on the walls and the decor is very Indo-Chinese, skinny Buddha, etc. We ordered the roti telur, dumpling and the night market dish, and fried rice. Everything was great except the dumplings which were a little soggy. I also ordered a martini which was a little too watery to taste good. We enjoyed our dinner, we got the roti which is quite sizeable and crab app (one crab cut up) which was delicious, buttery and crunchy. I got the curry laksa and my partner ordered the rendang and they ran out of beef so he got it with shrimp. The rendang was spicy but good. The laksa was ok. Very poppin spot.
