33 of us enjoyed a nine course (mostly) seafood dinner here. Service was efficient and you gotta love how nicer Chinese restaurants serve every course. Just stay hungry because you're in for a full serving every round. We started with a seafood and fish maw soup. The broth was flavorful and the the fish maw adds a bit of crunchy texture. Definitely better to have it in your soup than in the bedroom, which was another use for it back in the day. Second course was an assorted appetizer. The cold jellyfish and sea cucumber had nice texture. The lobster fritter was a tasty, fried treat. Peking duck was the only non-seafood course. The steamed buns were house made and the skin was perfectly crisp. Garlicky Dungeness crab came next. Then lobster in a buttery sauce. The crab meat was sweeter and more delicate, but also a lot more work. Probably my favorite dish was the spinach and mushrooms flavored with generous amounts of dried scallops. The veggies were fresh and the scallops were a real treat. The seventh course was a steam whole fish seasoned with ginger and green onion. The tender white meat easily pulled away from any bones. Then came a stir fry of scallops, shrimp, snow peas and other veggies. The veggies were crisp-tender and the seafood was plump and tender. Last course is always a starch. In our case, a dried scallop and shrimp fried rice. Complementary dessert was a choice of warm tapioca or red bean soup. For all of those courses, it was only $50 per person. My absolute favorite dim sum place. It's a bit chaotic, but it's just how it is in China town... and it's part of the experience!!! Take your seat and keep an eye out for the carts you want to flag down. I've been coming here as a kid, so my fam and I know exactly what to do, but as a first timer it might be a bit overwhelming. Legends used to have a vegetarian restaurant next to the main restaurant that was absolutely amazing. I am sad it's no longer around. Since I've developed Shellfish allergies, it makes eating dim sum really limiting. Parking is great - park in the Chinese Cultural Center and validate. The congee is really good. It comes around on a cart so you need to flag them down and don't feel bad about being aggressive about knowing what you want. I wouldn't suggest sitting down without knowing what you want. The Look Funn with beef is not good. We tasted several other dim sum items and the dishes are okay but nothing to rave about. Been here from day one when it first opened ages ago and just stopped by yesterday with my Mom for some late morning dim sum. Ok, so if you are local and know what dim sum is about around town, you know when the sweet spot is for eating here. Yup, 10am or earlier. So when we got there at almost 12 noon, I already knew what we were up against. There was a crowd of people waiting out front and a crowd still waiting when we finally left at 1pm. And the crowd is there for a reason. The food is pretty good. There are a lot of reviews here and the food speaks for itself. It tastes fresh and delicious. Plus I don't believe there is MSG because I don't get the symptoms I normally get when I eat at other places. The food is piping hot for the ones coming off the steamer carts and not like some other places where you get something and you know it's been sitting around for some time. With the amount of people they serve, food turnover is plentiful so you know you are getting dim sum right as soon as it leaves the kitchen. Fried food is no exception. Case in point, the deep fried seafood wrapped in nori. It was hot, fresh and crispy. Did I mention delicious? Same goes for the deep fried shrimp served with mayo. (Sorry, scarfed that down before any pics could be taken). So if you want good dim sum, get here early and be alert as the servers walk past your table. My usual dim sum order usually consists of seafood bundle, shrimp dumplings, chicken feet, custard buns, shumai, Choy sum, Peking dum and look fun. The best thing I had here was the seafood bundle and the custard buns. Everything else was ok. The Choy sum was more like Choy stems. There was barely any leaves on it. Mostly hard stems. The Peking duck was a huge disappointment. The meat was old and dry and the skin was brown and stale. Service was also just ok. We had to keep waving down the server with the dim sum cart because she didn't come to our table as often as we liked. In fact, if we didn't wave her down, she only came once without us gesturing to her. For a bill costing $120+ for 3 of us, the quality of the food wasn't worth it. read more

Get out of the tourist trap and take a trip to Legend Seafood. I'd you go be sure to go with a big group. It's way more fun to share a variety of dishes. If you're used to kung Paolo chicken you can get that but they also have more things to try that you won't find on the panda Express menu like - jellyfish, sea cucumber, and abalone. We also and the duck which was excellent, and udon noodles in a sauce that was delicious. Service was excellent. The only down side is that it's really bright - like department store lighting. A little more ambiance would help the experience overall, but don't let that stop you from going. read more

Legend Seafood Restaurant is truly a legend. I know they've been here in Hawaii for years and for good reason. We came here for Easter dinner and I still can taste their delicious dishes. Parking is in the Chinese Cultural Plaza and it costed us $2 or $3 for about 2 hours, I think. It's not bad and it beats parking on the street at night, in Chinatown! We got an array of dishes - Roast Duck, Ginger Chicken, Minute Chicken Cake Noodle, Garlic Pork Chops, Ong Choy, Sizzling Beef, Sizzling Black Bean Chicken. Roast Duck: very moist, tasty, and tender. Excellent! Ginger Chicken: typical Ginger Chicken. Nothing special and the pieces were the kind that did not have that much meat Minute Chicken Cake: saucey (delicious) and plentiful of toppings. The noodles were not hard and were fresh. You know how some places the noodles are like bricks? No, these were perfectly crunchy and went so well with the gravy. Garlic Pork Chops: another classic that was done right. Cooked-well and perfectly seasoned Ong Choy: Very saucey but also tasty. The ong choy was not overcooked, providing just enough crunch as well as tenderness Sizzling Beef: This might be the winning dish. The beef was so tender and the taste was just amazing. It was not salty, as much other beef suffers. On the sizzling plate makes it even more fresh and tender. Sizzling Black Bean Chicken: Basically the same sauce as the beef, and it was good. But the beef is my preference. Still very delicious! I don't know the exact price since I (obviously) didn't pay. BUT I do believe that for what we got, which included next day lunch and dinner leftovers, it was worth it! They got here before me and ordered their food. Their food had some of my favorites that included ha gau shrimp and hoi sin jaat fish & imitation crab wrapped with bean curd. It's that place that has pretty wall paper of koi. Called legends to double check that we could park there and they assured us. So on with the food.... SOOOO GOOD!!! we got 1. Half roast duck 2. Shrimp egg foo young 3. Shrimp fried rice 4. Garlic Choi sum 5. Salt and pepper shrimp ...we were hungry... lol. THE DUCK was super meaty, skin was nice and crispy, great flavor. So good! The egg foo young was probably the best I've had and I've eaten egg foo young in a lot of places because my husband loves it.. it was packed with shrimp, nice and hot, onions nice and crunchy but not raw, had light gravy but not drenched so u could still appreciate the crispness of the egg. So good! It wasn't oily either and that's rare!! The fried rice was bomb and so was the Choi sum. Salt and pepper shrimp was head-on and it was delicious!!! Good enough to eat whole and that's what we did!! We have half eaten pictures, but the portions here are well worth the cost and quality. We will be back!! Came in with family at 10:45 a.m. for dim sum brunch (yum cha), after a Ching Ming outing at Manoa Cemetery this April morning. The place was hopping with people! We put ourselves on the wait list. The group before us was called twice, no show, and we were seated promptly at what would have been their table. "Better you come in than you wait," said the hostess, who I was later told is the owner. Legend has been around for a long time and gone through ups and downs in terms of food quality. Right now, it seems that having survived the pandemic, it's on a very big upswing. There are many servers with their rolling carts, and sometimes some with trays "selling" their wares when new dishes appear from the kitchen. Call a server over, and ask them what they have or point at what you like. You're given a paper upon seating and they will mark or stamp the dishes that you order on it. When you are done, pay at the cashier in the back corner. The place is seemingly chaotic but if you can get past that, the food is well worth it. Try anything. Phoenix Claw (chicken feet), or Beef White Leaves (beef tripe). Try everything, even old favorites like the pork hash (siu mai). You'll find with the current kitchen crew, that the pork hash is steps above most local places: well-formed, full of juicy pork and chunks of shrimp and aromatic mushroom. Some of my favorites today were the flavorful "sieun jook gyuen" (steamed bamboo rolls), ultra-crunchy fried shrimp wontons (served with mayonnaise), and the Shanghai fried rice noodles. Unfortunately, the grill cart never got near us and I didn't even see it until near the end of our meal, so I couldn't order one of my usuals, the daikon turnip cake, or sample their scallion and chive dumplings. Our auntie Ling was on a mission to get us the food that we enjoy. My sister is a big fan of egg custard tarts, and while the restaurant was out of the regular whole egg type, they had just made some with egg whites. Auntie also got us an off-menu item, "fu pi gyuen." It's a flat seafood cake with shrimp, fish cake, and scallops, in a tofu skin wrapper, deep fried. We saw a few people stop in who looked like touristing visitors. One Caucasian couple had strangely uncomfortable looks on their faces. Be prepared, this place is like visiting a bustling Hong Kong dim sum restaurant. The speed of service and efficiency amazes me. The kitchen must be full of expert Iron Chefs and their minions, all working like clockwork. There is plentiful, though relatively cramped, parking inside Cultural Plaza structure. Ask for a secondary parking validation ticket at the restaurant. You can also park at metered street parking in the area, free on Sundays if you can find a stall. Bon appetit! read more

Legends offers a large variety of dim sum during lunch hour, its no wonder they are always busy. To be honest, Legends was not the first choice of dining this day. BUT, compared to the place I wanted to dine at whose line was a 40 minute wait, Legends seems like a good second choice mainly because there were tables available. And their food is decent (I've been told the chef has changed) but then, who am I to know? I used to say "dim sum IS dim sum". That statement is not entirely true and in the case of Legends, I'd say the food is as decent as I remember it to be from my last visit some time back. Dim sum for lunch is a great and fast way to go. Food already steamed and prepared. Make your choice off the carts, eat and leave. Simple! Parking in the Cultural Center can be a problem when leaving that is, if you are there during peak dining hours. But parking fees are validated. Myself personally? I'd look for street parking or park on the south side of Beretania at the municipal lot because I just don't like waiting in a parking structure while we exit (all 7 floors!) They are located inside of the Chinatown Cultural Plaza harbor side on the ground floor. If you come for dim sum on the weekends or holidays, come early or expect a wait. After you put your name down on the wait list, you will be given a number. Make sure to stick around and listen for your number to be called. They will first call the number in Chinese followed by English. The dim sum here is fresh because they sell a lot of it since it is normally busy. I prefer ordering a few items first. The reason being is when the dim sum gets cold, it does not taste as good. Parking is not expensive if you park in the Cultural Plaza. They validate and with validation you pay $1/hour. This place is okay. We decided to try out their dim sum for lunch around 12 on a Sunday. There were so much people waiting! We waited about 30/45 minutes for a table for 4. We didn't experience mean ladies pushing the carts, they were all pretty nice actually. While it was loud inside it wasn't too bad, as we were seated in the back corner. The dim sum itself was just ok. I've have better at other places. My favorites were the look fun - the chair siu and shrimp variety. Omg the char siu look fun was so DELICIOUS! But it's pretty hard to mess that up anyways. The BBQ pork (char siu) pastry was yummy too. I didn't care much for the shumai, chicken feet, and other things we got. I was really disappointed the cart with the roast duck and chicken didn't come by until we were almost done eating. I wanted to try it so bad but we were full already. Many of the same carts came by multiple times while others none or only once, and almost skipped us completely. The veggie cart (with Choi sum) passed us even though we were calling for some. They have a lot of different Dim Sum for me I like the steamed and Baked char sui buns I'm not really a big dim sum eater but everybody else is they like the chicken feet, shrimp pork hash, look fun with shrimp and others I don't even know the name of the dishes. Very busy & crowded for dim sum on Sundays for lunch. Servers are very efficient bringing dim sum carts around. Everyone at the table (all 8 of us) were stuffed full in under 30 minutes. The shrimp dim sum are stuffed full & very good. The fried gyoza were large and excellent. The pork dumplings were also really flavorful. We ordered bone/in char siu pork ribs which were great, as well as a bok choy dish flavored with garlic that was great. We also had a shrimp & bok choy dish that was good. The cha siu bao buns were more bun & had very little filling. The deep fried sesame seed buns were really greasy this time (unusual for Legends). We had a couple other dim sum baskets - for larger items, ask the server to cut them in half. Easier to get a taste of everything w/o eating way too much. I cannot recall the last time I came to Legend Seafood Restaurant (LSR)......maybe about 5 years ago or so? But this was my first time here under new ownership as next door neighbor Won Kee Seafood Restaurant recently purchased LSR within the last year. Last night I came here to celebrate my cousin's recent wedding with the whole extended family. It was an informal wedding reception that had 5 tables with a set menu. My foodie cousin most likely selected the menu and we had: 1) Scallop Soup (4.5/5) The soup came out piping hot. Very generous with their ingredients inside. Soup was tasty but perhaps too much "fillers" than scallops. 2) Deep Fried Squab (4.5/5) The squad also came out piping hot and I just loved the crispy skin. Nicely fried and not greasy at all. Meat was succulent and resembles duck but not as fatty. 3) Dungeness Crabs w/ Ginger and Onion Sauce (4/5) The flavor of the crab was spot on but you could tell the crab was deep fried previously and sat out for a bit because of the tepid temperature. If freshly cooked, the center would be hot but not this case. Ginger slices were very tender and tasty. 4) Steamed Whole Sea Bass (4.5/5) A nice sized, whole sea bass was steamed until perfection and topped with ginger and onion soy sauce. Very fresh and tasty but because I am still scarred by a fishbone stuck in my throat from last year's trip to China, I didn't have seconds. In the past I would chomp on the fish head and fins but not this time. 5) Braised Sea Cucumber w/ Black Mushrooms (4.5/5) Sea cucumber, another Chinese delicacy that requires much prep work, was executed well. It was paired with large Chinese black mushrooms. They were braised in a deep oyster sauce and served over boiled lettuce. Very solid dish. 6) Shrimp w/ Broccoli and Straw Mushrooms (3/5) I appreciated the fact that the broccoli was cooked separate for quality control. Broccoli is a vegetable that can be easily overcooked and hence, unappetizing. I sure don't like mushy or discolored broccoli. It was stir fried separate and plated. Then shrimp with straw mushrooms were cooked together and was placed over the broccoli. However, there clearly was a temperature difference between the shrimp and broccoli. Also, the shrimp texture was off - - perhaps it was over marinated and semi-mushy. The shrimp lacked the bouncy texture that determines the quality. 7) Cold Ginger Chicken (3/5) It was your standard cold chicken chopped up with the ginger sauce on the side. However, I found the sauce undesirable as it was processed too long where the end product had a semi-slimy texture. 8) Seafood Garlic Fried Rice (1/5) Hands down the most disappointing dish of the night. The rice was mushy and served to us at room temperature. It was obviously premade and scooped in a Pyrex pie plate. Despite having golden pieces of minced garlic inside, the fried rice lacked flavor. 9) Hot Red Bean Dessert Soup Your typical Chinese dessert that is served at the end of a meal. Cooked with rock sugar, tangerine peel and ginger. I'm NOT a fan of this so I'm not going to rate it. Service was above average for a Chinese restaurant. They were not full house on a Monday night but still busy. The wait staff have been trained well as they took notice of our water glasses and repeatedly changed our plates. They served the soup, fried rice and dessert as well as deboned our whole steamed fish at the table for easier consumption. As more dishes came, the wait staff consolidated entrees to make space on the lazy susan. Overall, a decent dinner with some issues on quality control. Not bad for duplicating this menu for 5 tables. For a nice change, this was a joyous occasion that brought the extended family together. Despite some flaws here and there, a solid 4-star rating from me. read more

Legend seafood restaurant in the Chinese Cultural Plaza just mountain of Chinatown is my tried-and-true number one favorite dim sum restaurant to go to. Whether it's a weekend or weekday, they always seem to be busy. I like to go early to miss the rush. It's even more fun when you go with someone who speaks Cantonese and they can order for you. It always seems to be better service that way. In addition to their dim sum, I love the House Seafood noodle but I think it's only available after 10 a.m. The only major drawback is the parking structure. It's not expensive, only a dollar or two with a validation from the restaurant but friends have had bad experiences. I always try to park on a lower level where there are more customers and foot traffic because I have heard nightmare stories when people park on the upper levels and have had smash and grabs over virtually nothing. Enjoy the restaurant and it's wonderful busy atmosphere but just be careful of the parking lot. Can't wait to go back! Absolutely love the food! read more

One of like 6 dim sum spots in the cultural center area of Chinatown, legend seafood is... well... legendary. It's been here for a hot minute, and it's maintained delicious food for as long as I can remember. It has a dim sum period, typically breakfast or brunch, and a dinner menu. Honestly, I've never tried the dinner, but why spoil a good thing when you have solid brunch. The ladies will come around VERY frequently and ask if you'd like things. If you've never tried it, ask and they will tell you. I think I surprised them that I actually ate the chicken feet, but it's all good. I just told them it helps me run faster. And the look fun is legit... easily in my top 3 choices. They stamp a card to identify what you have ordered, and they always have tea and water for you at the table. It can be very noisy, depending on the crowd, so just be prepared. Also, if you go early, there's less of a wait so just keep it in mind. This large and flashy Hong Kong style dim sum restaurant is a Honolulu Chinatown institution that has been around for a long time. Conveniently located in the Chinese Cultural Plaza that has its own private parking lot, you can enjoy a good meal in Chinatown without having to deal with the not so pleasant side of the surrounding area. The dim sum is hot and fresh. Well made and flavorful. The carts are loaded with lots of selections and assortments. You will find all your dim sum classics there. If the dim sum carts aren't enough, they have a menu with lots of great dishes to order from the kitchen. Despite the flash and style of the place, it is busy and very popular. Service is meant for speed and to get people in and out, so don't expect any personalized attention. This place is all about the food, so that is what you should focus on. I was very impressed with the spareribs, tripe, and the egg custard dessert. The spareribs were very meaty and full of flavor as was the tripe perfectly cooked and tasty. The egg custards were fresh, still warm, and pastry perfectly flaky. There are lots of dim sum places in Chinatown and everyone has their favorite place they brag about and insist on, but if you want the experience, I think this is a good place to go to entertain. It is a bit more expense than some of the whole in the wall places in Chinatown, but the quality is well worth it. read more
